The highly-talented Inara George has collaborated with Dave Grohl and Van Dyke Parks, has had Jackson Browne write a song for her, and is one half of the duo The Bird and the Bee (along with nine-time Grammy-winning songwriter Greg Kurstin). The daughter of Little Feat's Lowell George, Inara is no stranger to the music world and specifically the sonic tapestry that makes up Los Angeles. It's no surprise, then, that components of her community arise in her work. “Ventura Blvd.” has a personal narrative from a rare native.
Welcome to the Merry Month of Debts-cember!Part 2 - 8 Lazy Nights IV - On this week's show, because I just didn't have it in me to pull off another extended show, we're dialing it back with one of our shortest episodes of the year! 8 songs (one for each night of Chanukah) plus a bonus track to represent the starter candle. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
This week on The Side Woo Sarah talks with musician and songwriter, Inara George. Inara shares her experience growing older as a cis woman and as an artist. About Inara George Inara George is an American singer-songwriter and musician, one half of The Bird and the Bee, a member of the band Merrick, with Bryony Atkinson, and a member of the trio The Living Sisters, with Eleni Mandell and Becky Stark. The robots are coming! The robots are coming! And they're after our jobs - as lounge singers. Skynet would not be amused. But we kind of are - at least, Mike says his first encounter with a vocaloid will be ever imprinted upon his brain. Don't worry - this episode isn't all about our electronic replacements qua masters. We look at music by flesh and blood performers too, one of which has a crush on Indianapolis native and renowned writer Kurt Vonnegut. Pop matters takes a quick walk on the wild side. Jason Yeager – UNSTUCK IN TIME: THE KURT VONNEGUT SUITE; Randy Paserntes Trio featuring Gabe Noel & Sam Gendel - NOW AT LAST; Lloyd McNeil – TORI; Glenn Dickson – WIDER THAN THE SKY.
Greg Kurstin and Inara George, a.k.a. the bird and the bee, were scheduled to meet up to write songs on the day Queen Elizabeth passed. Inspired by the significance of the monumental day, they came up with a holiday song that balances their admiration of the Queen with their more complicated feelings about the monarchy, as we can hear on “Christmas without The Queen.”

My guest today is Bryan Cook a Los Angeles based mixer working in the studio world for the past 20 years. Bryan grew up just outside of Philadelphia, playing the saxophone. A book of Charlie Parker solos became the initial inspiration to pursue music on a deeper level experiencing the studio for the first time in high school and he went on to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study music production and engineering, where his first studio job was interning at Blue Jay studios outside of Boston. Upon graduation, Bryan headed to Los Angeles, where he landed at the legendary A&M Studios, which has since been renamed Henson Recording Studios. He worked with artists like Rod Stewart, The Wallflowers, Korn and +Live+, and producers such as Brendan O'Brien, Roy Thomas Baker, Jerry Harrison, Richard Perry, and Trevor Horn. He then headed out on his own in 2002. He worked for many years recording and mixing for composer/producer Michael Andrews doing music projects including Inara George and Gary Jules, alongside film projects like Walk Hard and 40 year old virgin. He now mixes on his own full time with the rare tracking or production session sprinkled in. He enjoys all kinds of music, except klezmer and polka. Bryan is best known for his work as a mixer for artists like U2, One Republic, the tv show Songland, and Allie Sherlock produced by Ryan Tedder. He has recorded the Raconteurs, Fleet Foxes, Iggy Pop, Queens of the Stoneage, Cold War Kids, Damien Rice, The Eels, and Autolux for Nigel Godrich's well-received “From The Basement” series. His recent work includes producing, recording, and mixing Jeff Goldblum's latest album, “I Shouldn't Be Telling You This.” Thank you to Howard Willing for the introduction. You may know Kawan DeBose for his stint on Season 12 of “The Voice.” This time, he's teaming up with local folk hero Inara George to share his jazzy reggae inspired song, “Wait.”
Jackson Browne, The Dreamer. I'm ending 2020 with a bang on a number of fronts. First, I have four interviews for the nights before Christmas--"folk pianist" George Winston; singer Inara George of The Bird and The Bee; Jamie Hilsden, who performed this holiday season as The Myrrhderers; and Matt Munoz of the East Bakersfield ska band Mento Buru. The second big news is that there will more in the upcoming months from all of these artists and others I have interviewed this season including Steven Drozd, Grant-Lee Phillips, Joey Burns of Calexico, and Holly Foster-Wells, Peggy Lee's granddaughter. Twelve Songs will take December 30 off but will return January 6, 2021 and will continue year-around at that point. I've always thought that the show was more about musicians and their musical, commercial and personal lives, and that Christmas music was simply a unique lens to help us get that view. I've never thought the show was simply part of the soundtrack to the season. This episode's interviews need little explanation. Inara George's roofers decided the day and hour of our interview was the time that they needed to work over her room, but the hammering is only briefly noticeable.

I’ll Eat It Here”. This episode, we share the Hello Uncle Foreigner origin story and talk in depth about how we defined ourselves and created our different series. Going from an idea that "Hey, we could do this vlogging thing just as well as anyone else. Better, even!" to a fully functional channel with several different shows ... this took some work. Here, we talk about that process, as well as why it was important to us to be able to create a framework for what we were doing overall, as well as a sort of "elevator pitch." See where it all started at HelloUncleForeigner.com. Of course, there's also some behind the scenes anecdotes from our latest video, "Mega-Shorts": https://youtu.be/KHTiX3yUNCI And some recommendations: * GLOBIK Cool, fun China content: https://www.youtube.com/user/GLOBIKvi... * Bird and the Bee, or all of Inara George's music, but specifically her Hall and Oates cover album: https://youtu.be/KHTiX3yUNCI * Author Peter Hessler, writes incisive non-fiction about living abroad. No Vomit Report this week. But we all feel good about that. And, In Chinese, the phrase I was struggling to find was 噼里啪啦 (pili pala) and it's the sound of fireworks. (Which, I guess this is my tacit recommendation for ChineseClass101.com -- They're the rare online Chinese learning outfit that has decent lessons and the intermediate level.) Live, from Luzhou, Sichuan, China ... we're talking about China vlogging.

On today's episode I talk to musician Inara George. The daughter of Lowell George, who was a member of Frank Zappa's band and the founder of rock group Little Feat, Inara grew up in Topanga Canyon, in the outskirts of Los Angeles. Since the 1990s, she has been a member of a number of bands herself including Lode, Merrick, and starting in the early 2000s, the indie pop duo The Bird and The Bee with Greg Kurstin. The duo have released a number of amazing albums and EPs, including an self-titled record, Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future, and their latest, Recreational Love, which was released in 2015. Inara has also recorded a number of albums under her own name: All Rise in 2005, An Invitation in 2008, which she recorded with Brian Wilson collaborator Van Dyke Parks, Accidental Experimental in 2009, and her latest Dearest Everybody, which will come out early next year. Almanac Mountain, beyond being an obscure peak in Penobscot County, Maine just shy of 1000 feet, also moonlights as a one man/one computer psych-folk / folktronica outfit from Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The outcast of a classical music and musical theatre upbringing, and the love child of his high school's epic electronic music room, Almanac Mountain (aka musician/producer Christopher Cote) found shelter and TLC in the sympathetic tones of pop artisans like Badly Drawn Boy, Magnetic Fields, The Divine Comedy, Inara George, Laura Veirs, Midlake, of Montreal, and numerous 60s psychedelic acts. These influences, combined with reverential nods to his concert hall past and the Arp blips and Korg bleeps emanating with generous tape echo from that distant school room, all contribute to the sundry sound of Almanac Mountain. http://www.reverbnation.com/almanacmountain www.wscafm.org fantalkwscafm@gmail.com
