Michael was born in the wagon of a traveling show... At least that's what it says on his website. He is a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College and has been directing and producing in any and all mediums.  Some recent projects are Broadway's Caroline, or Change revival (co-producer), off-Broadway's long running A Musical About Star Wars (director), and the decadent new soap opera, Mélange, starring Morgan Fairchild (editor). During the pandemic he produced and directed several high profile streaming benefits to raise money for various neighborhood institutions in need of some help.  Save West Bank Cafe was a 10 hour Christmas Day telethon, followed by Save Birdland, The Musical of Musicals (the York Theatre) and a benefit for The Stonewall Inn to name  few. Ultimately, we raised 1.5M and were honored that so many stars collaborated on these projects with him from President Clinton (both of them) to Sting, Whoopi Goldberg, Pete Townshend, Sean Penn nee Ciccone, Patti LuPone, André De Shields, Ana Gastyre, Demi Lovato and so many more.

I am so excited to welcome Dr. Jody Carrington to today's episode of The Superwoman Code! Jody is a wealth of knowledge, a psychologist by training and is obsessed with understanding how we create a community. Jody focuses much of her work around reconnection – the key to healthy relationships and productive teams. Jody just launched her latest book (you can check it out on Amazon and Chapters Indigo) and she is gearing up to change the way we think about each other. And it starts with connection.  On that connection note, I'm getting pumped up to see Jody LIVE in person in Halifax during her book tour, and there's still a few spots left (you'll get a ticket AND a copy of her book!) and I'd love to see you there. If you're not in Halifax, you'll still get to see her at one of her tour dates. I'll report back later, but I don't think we're going to be disappointed.  I hope you enjoy today's episode, I know I laughed hard (and reflected hard) during this recording.  xo Tour Dates & Tickets: Toronto | January 28 | Glenn Gould Studio | 7 PM  SOLD OUT Halifax | February 1 | Bella Rose Arts Theatre | 7 PM Vancouver | February 4 | The Cultch's, York Theatre | 7 PM  SOLD OUT Saskatoon | February 11 | Broadway Theatre | 2 PM Saskatoon | February 11 | Broadway Theatre | 7 PM  SOLD OUT St. John's | February 20 | LSPU Hall | 7 PM  SOLD OUT NYC | March 14 | Manhattan | 7 PM Winnipeg | May 15 | Museum of Human Rights | 7 PM Calgary | May 24 | Martha Cohen Theatre | 7 PM  SOLD OUT   Let's Be Friends! THE SECRET GARDEN COMPOSER: Lucy Simon LYRICIST: Marsha Norman BOOK: Marsha Norman SOURCE: Frances Hodgson Burnett's book The Secret Garden (1911) DIRECTOR: Susan H. Schulman CHOREOGRAPHER: Michael Lichtefeld PRINCIPLE CAST: Daisy Egan (Mary), Alison Fraser (Martha), Mandy Patinkin (Archibald)  OPENING DATE: Apr 25, 1991 CLOSING DATE: Jan 03, 1993 PERFORMANCES: 709 SYNOPSIS: After her family dies of cholera, young Mary Lennox is sent to live with her austere, widowed Uncle Archibald. At night she is convinced that she hears the sounds of crying and discovers that Archibald's bed ridden son, Colin, has been locked up out of sight for many years. Determined to bring sunshine to the boy, Mary begins to discover the other secrets the house protects. Director Susan H. Schulman traces the development of The Secret Garden as the first collaboration between an all-female creative team in a Broadway musical. Amongst a female writing team (Marsha Norman/Lucy Simon), producer (Heidi Landesman), and design team (Florence Klotz/Tharon Musser), there are noted recurring instances of significant memories reading Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel about a little girl struggling with life in a new home. By broadly describing the educational and professional obstacles overcome by three women involved in the premiere of the musical in their studies at Yale School of Drama, a bleak case is outlined for gender parity within commercial American theatre. Despite mixed reviews, audience responses to The Secret Garden were collectively positive and led the show to international success. This chapter examines the ways later female-helmed Broadway productions, such as Waitress, have benefited from or even overshadowed The Secret Garden.  Susan H. Schulman: Broadway credits: the Tony Award-winning musical The Secret Garden as well as its highly-successful U.S./Canadian national tour (Drama Desk nomination), the revival of Sweeney Todd†at Circle in the Square (Tony Award, Drama Desk nomination), the revival of The Sound of Music (Tony nomination Outstanding Revival) and Little Women and its successful national tour. For her direction of the premiere of Violet at Playwrights Horizons (New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical), Susan received a Drama Desk nomination for Best Director. She received an Obie Award for directing Sondheim and Furth's musical Merrily We Roll Along at the York Theatre. Susan also directed the national tour of Sunset Boulevard with Petula Clarke as well as three productions for City Center Encores. She has directed for regional theatres throughout U.S.A., Canada and Australia, and most recently a new musical in Denmark. Susan is a graduate of Yale Drama School, Hofstra University and New York's famed High School of Performing Arts. Susan holds a full professorship at Penn State University where she heads the Graduate Program in Directing for the musical theater stage. In order to end the marriage, her parents and various citizens of the morally bankrupt town concoct a plan to have Mack The Knife arrested and executed.  A play with music by dramatist Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, The Threepenny Opera is significant as a German political satire which has since become popular in the United States. Brecht's theatrical theories have had huge significance on the way theatre is presented globally and Weill's cabaret score influenced later American composers such as Kander and Ebb. Several songs from the show have become popular standards since its premiere. Today, it is best known for kicking off “the off-Broadway” musical, a musical that performs in more intimate spaces and offers more experimental, as opposed to commercial, work. Lauren Mack traces how the musical made its way to the United States, the political and social climate that welcomed it, and how audiences were trained to expand their definition of what defines a theatrical space. Susan H. Schulman: In March of 1994, not long after the close of her hit Broadway production of The Secret Garden, Susan H. Schulman sat down with Director Melvin Bernhardt to discuss her life in the theatre. Ms. Schulman walks a captivated audience of early-career Directors and Choreographers through her career to date, spanning neighborhood shows on her family's Brooklyn stoop as a small girl through her most recent Broadway production. We learn that it all began for her in the garage studio of 'Miss Harriet's School of Ballet' in Brooklyn, leading her to matriculate as the (self-labeled) "worst dancer in the class" at New York's prestigious High School of the Performing Arts. Her directing career stemmed from years as a performer at Hofstra University as an undergraduate. After being told that women could not apply to the Yale School of Drama graduate directing program, Susan attended Yale as a playwright for her graduate studies and kept directing none the less. This yearn to direct at any costs won her productions first in Buffalo, then at the Equity Library Theatre in New York, and then a season of musicals at the Civic Light Opera house in Pittsburgh. Susan explains how she came to direct musical theatre so masterfully and on such a grand scale, while not initially being able to read music. Her method understanding the music: taking children's piano lessons. Equally impressive are the unlikely circumstances under which she moved her York Theatre company production of Sweeney Todd from a school gym to a Broadway home at Circle in the Square Theatre. This 90 minute interview continues with insights on the collaborative process, Susan's opinions on the American Musical, and advice to the young theatre makers in attendance. It is a conversation not to be missed by any artist interested in the work ethic necessary to make it to Broadway.Originally recorded - March 14, 1994. Running Time - 1:18:41 ©1994 SDCF

Helen Mark takes us on a journey to the real Never Never Land. Peter Pan first came to life on the glittering stage of London's Duke of York Theatre on 27th December 1904, but he began life far away from the hustle, bustle and glamour of the West End in the market town of Kirriemuir near Dundee. Helen Mark visits the birth place of J.M. Barrie who immortalised this "wee red toonie" as "Thrums" in his popular (pre-Pan) novels Auld Licht Idylls, A Window in Thrums, and The Little Minister. Helen also takes us out into the landscape that is believed to have inspired Never Never Land and the adventures of Peter Pan himself. Producer: Nicola Humphries.

Month Upon a Time, Episode #11 (April): Remember last month when I said I wanted to do something special to celebrate my 50th podcast episode? Well, I'd say I hit the jackpot with a visit from the very special Dee Hoty!I've been a big Dee Hoty fan since seeing her as Alaura in City of Angels, and she has never disappointed, giving standout performances in every show she graces. And she has seemingly graced them all! Between her work on Broadway and in national tours, regional theatre, and summer stock, I'm pretty sure Dee has played every leading lady role ever written, and then some. Dee is one of those actors' actors: she'll camp out on Broadway for years in big shows (did I mention she's received three Tony Award nominations?), but then she'll also pursue those labors of love, like The Transport Group's The Audience (which happens to be the only time Dee and I have appeared in the same playbill). After years of saying "We should do something together," what a treat for me to get to hear her sing my little April song. This month's idea comes from an old friend and fellow Plaid, Richard Roland, once actor, now director, whose one-word suggestion was simply "Taxes." (For the record, there were multiple people who suggested taxes, but Richard was officially the first. Thanks to everyone who sent ideas! One more month left... I'm going to miss that process, you guys!)FYI, my love affair with Dee Hoty continues into May, when she will be performing (along with Drew Gehling, Sarah Stiles, and recent podcast guest Dee Roscioli) in my upcoming concert, Trunk and Disorderly: Songs from the Deep, Dark Trunk of Jeff Blumenkrantz. Did I mention that I won the Fred Ebb Award this year? Well, as part of my prize, they're sponsoring a concert of my songs on May 14 at 6:30 at the York Theatre. Seating is limited, so I can't offer you seats outright, but if you want to come, please put yourself on the waiting list by filling out the form on the other side of this link, and I'll let you know ASAP if we can accommodate. (FYI, there is no charge.) This episode was recorded on April 27, 2012.

Special Episode #1: When I decided I wanted to use "Man in the Moon" for a *special* podcast episode, it came to me in about a millisecond who HAD to sing it: Nancy Anderson. Not only because she's an amazing talent and friend, but also because no one captures the sound of the 20's and 30's like Nancy. Check out her wonderful new solo CD, Ten Cents a Dance, for conclusive proof.Nancy and I met in 2001, performing together in the Broadway production of A Class Act, where she was my "show girlfriend." Nancy created the role of "Mona" in the Manhattan Theatre Club production and subsequently made her Broadway debut in that role when the show moved to the Ambassador. She had already created a sensation Off-Broadway in Jolson & Company, which earned her her first Drama Desk nomination.Since then, she has been dazzling audiences with her many stellar performances, most notably as Lois/Bianca in the revival of Kiss Me, Kate, first on the US Tour and then in the West End production, which was later filmed for PBS. (Does she nail the period or what?) Don't forget her wonderful performance in the 2003 revival of Wonderful Town! (Period!!) This past season, at the York Theatre, she won over critics and audiences alike in the title role of Fanny Hill. (She even nailed the 18th Century, as well as a second Drama Desk Nom!)If you're wondering whether she can pull off a contemporary role (yes!), then you must have missed her hot, hot performance in this year's Off-Broadway play, Burleigh Grime$.In this episode, Nancy sings "Man in the Moon", an audition spec song I wrote this summer. (What this means is, when producers are considering several different people or teams to write their new show, sometimes they'll ask them all to write songs for that project as part of the audition process.) The project in question takes place around 1930, and that's about as specific as I can be right now. (Recorded 11/3/06.)Luckily, you'll have some opportunities to see and hear Nancy coming up! Foremost among her many November appearances is her engagement at The Metropolitan Room, two Tuesday night shows, November 14 and November 28, at 9:30 PM. Not to be missed! And speaking of other things not to miss, I'd also like to remind you about the Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook Concert at Birdland on Monday, November 20th at 7PM, featuring Liz Callaway, Victoria Clark, Michael McElroy, Mary Testa, and Alysha Umphress!
