After the battle of Wolf 359, the team consisting of Commander Riker, Lieutenant Commanders Data and Shelby and Lieutenant Worf on board the U.S.S. Enterprise were doing all they could to protect the ship against the invading Borg, led by Locutus of Borg, formerly Captain Picard of the Federation. It was a strange situation. The alien drones seemed oblivious to the starship's crew as both sides went about completing their objectives and overall missions. Our training kicked in and it was as if we were on Star Trek: Away Missions by Andrew Haught, Mike Haught and Phil Yates from Gale Force Nine. For reasons unexplained, Tony & Johnny are gone. But filling in, from the 24th century, are everyone's favorite Federation stooges, Captain Picard and Lieutenant Worf! They're the podcast's biggest fans, and they're recording on the Holodeck and beaming it back through time or something…it all sort of gets explained. You'll be satisfied with the reasoning, don't worry. Even though it's the future, they still manage to encounter Zoom issues. They also get into Klingon cuisine, Picard's mysterious bathroom incident, and how exposed they feel in Cardassian space! Then, Will Hines beams in to talk about his uneventful breakfast, how much (or little) his death would affect the time stream, and how his tossed-off, comic book podcast with his brother is an unexpected success! Worf and Picard are jealous on Tony & Johnny's behalf. This episode has action, thrills, and yes, space-degradation! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, Chris and I dive into Season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The first and second seasons of the show were arguably the worst seasons of any Star Trek show. That being said, this particular episode is one of the high moments of an otherwise lackluster season. Join us as we examine the important character development this episode imparts to Commander Riker and Lieutenant Worf. Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast

"Birthright," Parts I and II.  In the sixth-season episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, "Birthright," Parts I and II, there are parallels between Lieutenant Worf and the Ancient Greek philosopher Socrates. Both Worf and Socrates were accused of corrupting the minds of the youth, both were protesting the perceived injustices and irrationality of the established state, and both were sentenced to death by execution (a fate escaped by Worf more successfully than by Socrates!).  In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison discuss the similarities and dissimilarities of Worf and Socrates. Had Worf been successfully executed, would Worf have been remembered in future Klingon history as a martyr and as the founder of a new Klingon philosophical movement, Worfism (and eventually neo-Worfism), emphasizing the ideal form of the Klingon Empire?  In addition, Zachary and Mike discuss ancestral and cultural identity, both in the galactic melting pot of the Star Trek universe and in our globalized society here in the real world. Finally, not forgetting the subplot of the emergence of Lt. Commander Data's newfound ability to dream, Zachary and Mike discuss the role and significance of dreams and mythology in a modern, progressive, scientific, and rationalistic society.   Chapters  Welcome to Episode 65 (00:01:06)  Worf and Socrates (00:03:08)  Worf the Martyr and Neo-Worfism (00:10:56)  Slavery, Melting Pots, and Cultural Identity (00:28:13)  Fatherless Data and Worf - Identity and Meaning (00:37:10)  Klingon Beatnik - "Hey, Mr. Bat'leth Man, Slay a Targ for Me" (00:48:48)  Modernity, Dreams, and Mythology (00:56:11)  Cosplay and Choosing Your Own Identity (01:07:44)  Final Thoughts (01:11:10)   Hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison   Production Mike Morrison (Editor) Zachary Fruhling (Producer) Matthew Rushing (Executive Producer) Ken Tripp (Executive Producer) C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer) Patrick Devlin (Associate Producer) Kay Shaw (Associate Producer) Kit Loffstadt (Associate Producer) Richard Marquez (Production Manager) Brandon-Shea Mutala (Patreon Manager)   Send us your feedback! Twitter: @trekfm  Facebook: http://facebook.com/trekfm  Voicemail: http://www.speakpipe.com/trekfm  Contact Form: http://www.trek.fm/contact  Visit the Trek.fm website at http://www.trek.fm/  Subscribe in iTunes: http://itunes.com/trekfm   Support the Network! Become a Trek.fm Patron on Patreon and help us keep Star Trek talk coming every week. The Bonding.   When Lieutenant Marla Aster is killed unexpectedly during an away mission under Lieutenant Worf's command, Worf takes young Jeremy Aster under his wing by participating in the Klingon ritual known as "R'uustai" ("The Bonding"). In this episode of Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling explore the philosophical themes of death and loss. Mike and Zachary discuss meaning and the existential absurdity of life and death, the sociological and cultural role of rituals, Jeremy Aster's escapism and the illusion of happiness, the finality of death, and the sense of powerlessness in the face of death. Worf with The Orb. The idea of a Klingon serving in Starfleet may have struck some fans as heresy when Worf debuted in the 1987 TNG pilot "Encounter at Farpoint." However, as the journey of this Klingon unfolded, he became a fan favorite. Over the seven seasons of The Next Generation, as well as the feature films, Lieutenant Worf took his place as tactical officer of the Enterprise-D and continued to struggle with his dual identities resulting from being a Klingon who was raised by humans. Whether discovering a long-lost brother, a long-lost son, or a long-lost Klingon homeworld (with its own political turmoil and machinations), Worf helped viewers explore Klingon culture and expanded on what knew about this "warrior race" during the Captain Kirk's time. In order to better understand this vital character, we're joined in this episode of Earl Grey by Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing, co-hosts of The Orb, to discuss the seeds of his story which continued on Deep Space Nine. So sharpen your teeth, grab your bat'leth, and join in the warrior fun.    Hosts Phillip Gilfus, Daniel Proulx, and Darren Moser   Guests Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing   Editor and Producer Darren Moser   Associate Producers Become one!
