In this episode, I spend time with New Perspectives on Henry Corbin, edited by Hadi Fakhoury, and reflect on why Corbin still feels so strangely alive right now.Corbin is difficult to place. He moves through Islamic philosophy, Suhrawardi, Shi'ism, Heidegger, Neoplatonism, angelology, psychoanalysis, esotericism, and the imaginal world, but what keeps pulling me in is his refusal to reduce spiritual reality to dogma, psychology, politics, or fantasy. He gives us a way to think about imagination not as escape, but as a form of perception.I also reflect on some of the chapters I'm most excited by, including Charles Stang on Corbin and Neoplatonism, Joan Copjec on Corbin, Lacan, and Kiarostami, Matthew Dillon on James Hillman's democratization of Corbin's imaginal thinking, and Wouter Hanegraaff's haunting portrait of Corbin's Freemasonry, neo-Templar spirituality, and personal longing for a hidden community of the spirit.This is less a summary of the whole book and more an invitation into Corbin as a provocation: What kind of world do we think we are living in? The Secret and the SaffronA history of the Druze people and their cuisine.The Druze are a unique and often misunderstood community in the Middle East. Their history is more than just religious debates and politics; it is a living story shaped by family, faith, and food. To understand the Druze, you have to imagine traveling from the secret meetings of 11th-century Cairo to the bright kitchens of the Galilean and Lebanese mountains, where the smell of spices tells a story of survival and identity.The Druze faith began during a time of great spiritual and political change. In the early 11th century, Cairo was the center of the Fatimid Caliphate, which supported Isma'ili Shi'ism. In 1007, a Persian mystic and scholar named Hamza ibn Ali ibn Ahmad began teaching a new belief. He said that the divine intellect had appeared in human form as the Fatimid Caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah.This belief led to a dramatic conflict. Caliph al-Hakim was a mysterious and controversial leader, and the idea of his divinity became central to the new faith. Another preacher, Muhammad bin Ismail al-Darazi, also supported the movement, but Hamza thought his ideas were too extreme. Al-Darazi called himself “the Sword of the Faith” and taught an incarnationist view that Hamza strongly opposed. In one thousand 18, al-Darazi was killed, and his name became linked to the community as a heretic. Strangely, outsiders began calling the group Druze after him, even though they have always called themselves al-Muwaidūn, or “the Unitarians.”The new faith quickly faced strong opposition from religious leaders in Cairo. Riots started, and the movement was forced underground. Things got worse when Caliph al-Hakim disappeared during a night ride in one thousand 21 and was thought to be assassinated. His successor, al-Zahir, began harshly persecuting the Druze. Hamza went into hiding, and leadership passed to al-Muqtanā Bahāʾ al-Dīn. To escape danger in Egypt, Druze missionaries fled to the remote mountains of Syria and Lebanon, where they built the communities that still exist today. In 1,043, al-Muqtanā decided that no new converts would be allowed, so from then on, only those born into the faith could be Druze.The Druze faith is private and closed to outsiders. Their holy texts, called the Rasa'il al-hikmah (Epistles of Wisdom), are fully known only to a spiritual group called the uqqāl, or “the wise.” Most Druze, known as the juhhāl, live regular lives centered on family and community, while still respecting the main beliefs of their faith.Druze beliefs come from many sources. Their faith started with Isma'ili Shi'ism but was also influenced by Greek philosophy, especially Neoplatonism and Pythagoreanism, and by Gnosticism. This mix has created beliefs that make them different from their neighbors. A key idea is reincarnation (taqammus), which holds that the soul is eternal and reborn as another Druze person after death. This continues until the soul reunites with the Cosmic Mind. The Druze honor many prophets from Abrahamic religions, such as Jethro (Shuʿayb), Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad, seeing them as different forms of the same divine truth. Over time, they have developed a unique ethnic identity. They speak Arabic and share a culture, but their roots are often traced to Arab tribes who settled in the Levant before and during the early Islamic period.To really understand the Druze, you need to share a meal with them. Their food reflects their history, shaped by the land, hospitality, and quiet pride. Mountain cooking uses simple, high-quality ingredients like bulgur wheat, olives, lamb, goat yogurt, and a careful mix of spices. These writings played a crucial role in his intellectual conversion: they revealed a transcendent, immaterial God as Being itself, the eternal Word/Logos, and the soul's capacity for contemplative ascent beyond the material world—ideas strikingly parallel to the prologue of John's Gospel.Yet St. Augustine recognized Platonism's crucial limitation: it allowed him to "catch the fragrance" of God but not to "feast" through union, because it lacked the Word made flesh—the incarnate Christ as the true mediator who bridges the gap between the divine and humanity, solving the problem of mediation and purification that Platonism itself raised but could not resolve.Ultimately, Pecknold presents Platonism as a providential praeparatio evangelica—a promise that raises the restless heart's longing for God, truth, beauty, and eternal happiness—but one fulfilled only in Christianity. St. Augustine adopts and transforms Platonic elements (such as the ideas/forms residing in the divine mind, now identified with the Logos/Christ, and the soul's ascent through purification) while critiquing its errors, especially its inadequate mediators and inability to address incarnation, bodily resurrection, and grace. In this way, St. Augustine shows that Plato comes closest among philosophers to Christianity, yet only the Word made flesh satisfies the hunger Plato so powerfully articulated.Plato on St. Boethius is up next week!

In this episode, my son Jack joins me to examine The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius, a Roman scholar living just after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 CE. A renaissance man before the Renaissance, Boethius translated Greek philosophers like Aristotle and Plato, served as a trusted aide to the Gothic king Theodoric in Ravenna, and was a mathematician, astronomer, and family man whose sons became consuls in their early 20s. Despite his Christian faith, tensions with the Arian Theodoric led to his imprisonment and brutal execution at 44. This tragedy tarnished Theodoric's rule, but Boethius' legacy shaped medieval thought, preserving Greek philosophy and influencing giants like Chaucer, Dante, Aquinas, and Shakespeare.Written in a cell awaiting death, The Consolation of Philosophy is a profound dialogue between Boethius and Lady Philosophy. Divided into five books, it blends prose (prosa) and poetry (metrea), offering wisdom through a narrative arc. Book One introduces Boethius' despair; Book Two explores Fortune's fickleness; Book Three seeks the highest Good; Book Four tackles the problem of evil; and Book Five reconciles divine foreknowledge with free will. The poems, rich with mythological and Biblical imagery, provide emotional breaks and reinforce the prose's insights. As C.S. Lewis noted, this work was beloved by educated Europeans for centuries.Boethius weaves Neoplatonism, Stoicism, and Aristotelian ideas into a Christian framework. Lady Philosophy echoes Plato's belief in innate knowledge, urging Boethius to “dream of your origin,” and champions philosopher-kings. Stoic themes emerge as she declares the mind free despite bodily exile, while Aristotle's Unmoved Mover aligns with Boethius' God. True faith requires more than verbal profession; it demands actively doing the will of the Father, implying that actions and heartfelt commitment are essential for salvation.The Eucharist as Central: The New Passover and Real Presence. Leon passionately explained the Eucharist as the new Passover, instituted by Christ. Referencing John 6, he stressed the Catholic belief in the Real Presence—that the bread and wine become the literal body and blood of Christ—which is essential for spiritual life and communion with God.Reconciliation and Purity: Restoring Communion.
