The Muslim world, despite its sprawling and complex history, is largely understood by outsiders to fall within the Shia or Sunni category, or among the conflict between. This is not just misleading, but also obscures a much more fascinating and colorful human history of the Middle East which continues to shape events today. In this episode of Departures with Robert Amsterdam, we're pleased to feature Barnaby Rogerson, the author of "The House Divided: Sunni, Shia and the Making of the Middle East." Rogerson, who is a seasoned British author, television presenter and publisher explores these complex themes and history, sharing stories dating back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632, the accidental coup against his son, and fast forwarding right up to the Iranian revolution to draw insights on the religious cleavages which have taken root in the region in modern times.

It's Casual Friday! Sam & Emma speak with Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to discuss the upcoming stories to watch in 2025. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the House vote over the GOP Speakership, Trump's transition team, Biden's blocking of the Nippon Steel's takeover of US Steel, GOP judges killing Net Neutrality, the identities behind the attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas, California captive audience ban, Bird Flu, SEIU action, and Social Security retirement age requirements, before expanding on today's big Speakership vote as Mike Johnson begins to feel the heat. Jeet Heer then joins, diving right into today's ongoing fight over the Speakership, unpacking why, despite all the groveling, the GOP is likely to stand firm in line, just as they do with Trump. Next, Heer, Sam, and Emma parse thoroughly through the OTHER ongoing fight amid the GOP over the validity of H-1B Visas, a work visa for immigrants that puts their rights and wellbeing entirely in the hands of the corporation that employs them, unpacking the pro-H-1B (let's exploit immigrants) and anti-H-1B (no, we hate immigrants!) arguments on the right, before diving deeper into a genuine leftist critique of how these visa's work to lower rights for both workers and immigrants writ large, and the right's desire to use them as a part of their Social Darwinist vision. Jeet also expands on the failing tactic among progressive Democrats to work within the DNC power structure, tackling the potential for a new progressive movement to build up power in the House and Senate outside of the party infrastructure, and the growing possibility of said movement as we enter an era of seemingly anti-system electorate, also responding to some pushback about the mutual-exclusion of being a party outsider while still working with the party, before wrapping up with a brief conversation on Jordan Peterson, Pierre Poilievre, and the state of Canadian politics. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the ongoing discourse from the GOP over H-B1 visas, as the embrace of the exploitation of immigrants comes in conflict with the rejection of those immigrants themselves, with Charlie Kirk's crew helping to add some “DEI” dog-whistling into the mix. They also watch Mike Johnson sulk his way out of Congress until his ultimate victory in the speakership vote, and Sam walks the audience through the absurdities of Social Security's income cap, plus, your calls and IMs! POETRY IN COMMOTION. Data's Ode to Spot is about as lighthearted as it gets in an episode inspired by the alien abduction pop culture phenomenon. It's a terrific episode to watch ahead of Halloween, but is it a TREK, MARRY, or KILL? The grades begin at (18:19).

For more than a hundred years the Holy Roman Empire was a mess of constant infighting between and within the great princely families. But by the 1360s the consistent policies and elaborate diplomacy of emperor Karl IV had produced a degree of stability not seen by anyone alive. With the home front calm, the emperor can again assume a role on the European stage, setting in train seminal events that will reverberate across the centuries…The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comFacebook: @HOTGPod Twitter: @germanshistoryInstagram: history_of_the_germansReddit: u/historyofthegermansPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/HistoryofthegermansTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. Renegade Supply Store: https://renegade-supply-shop.printify.me/products Sometimes as people when we encounter a problem, we tend to look forward to try to get perspective on the issue we are facing. Now that's not a bad thing, sometimeshowever the perspective we desire is found behind us. Now let's look at Mormonism. Could it be that perhaps other religious traditions have gone through something similar that Mormonism has with splits from the mainstream that has led to different groups and churches? Well today I have Justin Francom on to talk about the split that happened in early Christianity that led to the development of what is today known as Eastern Orthodox Christianity. In our conversation we cover the history of the early Christian church, then move on to discuss the reasons and doctrinal disagreements that precipitated the split, we then draw some very interesting connections between the split that happened almost 2,000 years ago to what has happened to Mormonism today that should give us the perspective we need to move forward. Finaly we wrap up by talking about opportunities moving forward that just might help the various groups and independents find common ground while allowing us to disagree more agreeably. That and more on this episode of the MRP. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. In these episodes, Kite brings Gon and Killua deeper into the NGL, as the ants rapidly construct a very familiar kind of society. Schisms within the officer class of ants leave Colt, the senior Squadron Leader, to try and pick up the pieces. After one of Kite's worst case scenarios come true, and the Ants have taken and eaten the NGL's underworld society led by King Gyro, another (unexpected) worst case scenario hits when Gon lands a nearly fatal blow on Rammot, one of the Ants' most bloodthirsty soldiers. In this episode, Alex focuses on why he thinks the dam may finally be breaking for Biden and his campaign future. Polls show that New York state may be closer than anyone hoped and fundraising for the re-election campaign may be drying up as more Democratic Senators are now coming out against Biden. Also, a piece by Tim Alberta in The Atlantic highlights why Trump's campaign team consider Biden an electoral gift. Of course, Alex rants about soccer a bit as well.

Data reads poetry, and Riker is sleepy as fuck! Clicking aliens, this episode is heavy on the horror side of genre. The fishmonks are assholes and have been stealing crewmembers of the Enterprise away from this dimension. We follow Riker's perspective, but it's happening to Geordi, Worf, and that other lady, too. To figure it all out, Troi takes them into the holodeck where they recreate from memory together where they've been abducted to. The climax is a bit of a disappointment, but the premise of Schisms is solid. Just make sure you stay awake for the end of the poetry reading. In addition to St. Justin Popovic's piercing theological clarity, this text offers us three significant examples: 1) The Serbian Hierarchs humbly asked a priest for his thoughts before making their decision 2) This priest, St. Justin, responded boldly and clearly 3) The Serbian Hierarchs followed his advice. All this is regarding a most tempting and powerful heresy attacking the Orthodox Church today: Ecumenism. -READ the text here: https://www.orthodoxethos.com/post/orthodoxy-and-ecumenism-an-orthodox-appraisal-and-testimony 0:00 Begin 0:11 Introduction and Historical Context by Bishop 7:17 Quote from Bishop Athanasius Yevtich on St. Justin not breaking communion with the local Churches 8:39 St. Justin's reply to the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church -BUY “The Orthodox Church and Ecumenism” by St. Justin: https://lazarica.co.uk/bookshop/ -BUY "Orthodox Faith and Life in Christ" by St. Justin: https://ibmgs.org/miscellaneous.html -LISTEN to more recordings by Orthodox Wisdom of St. Justin's teachings: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzFKi22k2KYgxvJMJchHwGAWGZebY0s2s -FIND an Orthodox parish and monastery near you: https://orthodoxyinamerica.org/ _______ St. Justin writes: The Church of Christ has defined her stand towards heretics— and all non-Orthodox are heretics—once and for all through the Holy Apostles and the Holy Fathers, namely, through the Holy Theanthropic Tradition, which is unique and immutable. In keeping with this stand, Orthodox are forbidden to engage in joint prayer or liturgical communion with heretics. Was it really necessary for the Orthodox Church, the all-immaculate Theanthropic Body and organism of the God-Man Christ, to be so monstrously humiliated that Her theological representatives, including even Hierarchs (among whom were also Serbs), should seek after “organic” participation and inclusion in the World Council of Churches, which thus becomes a new ecclesiastical “organism,” a “new Church” above the churches, of which the Orthodox Church and non-Orthodox churches are merely “members,” “organically” joined to each other? Alas, an unprecedented betrayal! Orthodox theologians should participate not in “ecumenical joint prayers,” but in theological dialogues in the Truth and about the Truth, as the Holy and God-bearing Fathers have done throughout the ages. _______ Bishop Athanasius Yevtich writes: “We were closely acquainted with the Blessed Father Justin and we know that he had never broke communion with any of the Orthodox Churches or a Bishop or a Patriarch, not even with the Serbian Patriarch Germans (1958-1990—as some "zealots "shamelessly lie—not even when the Patriarch Ger-manos was one of the "presidents of WCC" (a formal and honorary title without any binding conditions or duties as indeed was the participation of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the WCC). As a free and responsible member of the Church of Christ, Justin prophetically reproved and, when necessary, criticized in written form (having written a couple of criticism letters to Patriarch Germans and the Synod, inter alia, the letters pertaining to superficial western ecumenism). But on no account did he ever create a schism, but on the contrary used to say: “Schisms are easily made but they are enormously difficult to heal.” -Notes on Ecumenism, pp. 36-37 _______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. We need more development, Scotty! It's the return of Captain Montgomery Scott by way of James Doohan by way of a jury-rigged transporter buffer. The Enterprise encounters a Dyson sphere in the middle of space, and a Federation transport ship crashed on its massive surface. Geordi rescues Scotty from the transporter, but can't rescue him from feeling old. Like a relic from the past, if I may be so bold. The bridge of the Enterprise from the original series - NOT the movies - is visited in the holodeck, and the ambiguously engineer duo of Scotty and Geordi team up to get the ship out of the garage before the door closes. All in all, more was desired from this TOS incursion, but it was a good drink, nonetheless. Bright green, of course. Get in touch with us on BlueSky @ReEngageTNG.bsky.social! What's up you elevated egrets and activated asps! I'm back from a couple weeks of travel and feeling blessed, rejuvenated, re-calibrated and primed for creative renewal. This episode I riff about how allegiance to 'isms' has a tendency to create schisms in the human psyche, as well as rupture the integrity of any given collective will. Divide and conquer baby, that's always been the strategy of rulers. Rigid and inflexible adherence to modes of thought often betrays an emotional attachment to an idea, and that can get dicey quick, as ideas must be able to bend when the winds of change come, as they inevitably do. The ideal dance is an adaptive collaboration between individual beliefs, shared desires and cooperative, productive action. Papering over issues to avoid cognitive dissonance is a recipe for fragility. Also touched upon is the notion of safe space. It seems like everybody's constantly talking about ensuring that spaces are safe. The question is: safe for whom? And towards what end? Who is defining what 'safe' is? Does safety necessitate total emotional coziness? Who gets to enjoy this coziness and who does not? And what to do when safe emotional and verbal spaces come at the expense of real, physical safety of an invisibilized group? Rarely do the marginalized members of our society get to dictate parameters for perceived safety. Also: do safe spaces actually exist in nature? This ep's cold open Zany Audio is a re-make of an old classic: Wild Bucko's Raw & Fermented Meat Emporium. Tune in for all this and more. Big thank you to the Day Ones and all the new listeners. Last September, Eitan Hersh, a political science professor at Tufts University in Boston, tried something that hasn't been done before: he created a class teaching conservative ideas to students of his private liberal college. He felt there was a gap in the school's poli-sci curriculum, sensing that graduates were leaving without understanding the central ideas of the political right. He included articles from the National Review, videos of Tucker Carlson and essays by conservative Black intellectuals such as Glenn Loury and Thomas Sowell. The results, summarized in a recent longform feature in Boston Magazine, hint at the effectiveness of teaching politically diverse opinions on campus: most students (of this admittedly self-selecting group who are even willing to engage with the curriculum in the first place) did seem to positively grapple with the ideas, understand them better and have reasonable debates in an open academic forum. As pro-Palestinian tent protests continue dividing post-secondary institutions across North America, and political polarization feels more prevalent than ever before, we're joined by Hersh on Bonjour Chai to discuss what he learned by running this "conservative thought experiment" over an entire semester. Credits Bonjour Chai is hosted by Avi Finegold and Phoebe Maltz Bovy. Zachary Kauffman is the producer and editor. Michael Fraiman is the executive producer. Our theme music is by Socalled. Schisms! Does it make sense to have an alien abduction story when you're already in space and hanging out with aliens 24/7? Does it make sense to have an episode where there's not much else to it other than the thinly veiled mystery? Does it make sense for an android to compose and recite dank-ass poetry about his cat? The answer to one of these questions is an emphatic yes. The others? Uh... Uncover the deep-rooted connections and divisions that have sculpted Christianity into the diverse tapestry we see today. We navigate the historical and theological nuances that differentiate the Catholic Church from other Christian traditions. Unpacking the significance of the Second Vatican Council, we confront how Catholicism stands as the one holy and apostolic Church, distinct from the broader category of denominations. Diving into the contentious topics of scripture interpretation and the Sola Scriptura principle, we strive to foster a dialogue that stretches beyond mere labels, encouraging a broader perspective on what it means to identify as Christian within varying cultural contexts.Navigating the once inseparable realms of church and state, we traverse the historical landscape that saw the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church split amidst a whirlwind of politics and theology. We dissect the complex ecclesiastical relationships and the concept of schism, revealing how such religious rifts birthed modern sovereign states. As the discussion unfolds, we reflect on the resilience of faith through human imperfection and the transformative evolution that led to the current secularism. Join us on this enlightening episode as we examine the profound influence of Christendom on politics and the enduring legacy of the church in shaping nations.Have something you'd love to hear Fr. "I didn't get it at first, and was skeptical definitely. I could have lived without it for sure, but then they tied my hands." - Ryan the MedicWelcome to the BNP and thanks so much for joining. This episode I'm pleased and humbled to feature Ryan the Medic. Ryan served as a combat medic in the Army, and is now an inactive reservist. During his time serving as a medic, Ryan was forced to work 14 hour days (w/ one 30 min break) vaccinating people for Covid, one after another, including fellow soldiers. Many of these individuals did not want to be, or at least would have preferred not to be vaccinated. He talks about the mental and physical strain of discharging such a mission. We also talk about the recruiting crisis in the Army, and some of the factors that Ryan perceives to be responsible for it, including military leadership being more concerned with politics, political correctness and culture war issues rather than focusing solely on the well being, training and lethality of the troops. Ryan talks about the history of the Army pulling off some stunning military feats and how the current iteration of its leadership, as well as the greater societal zeitgeist, has seemingly become unmoored from this legacy. And in general we talk about the schism between the people actually serving in the Army vs. the officers and leadership corps that betray their own service people in order to further their careers. We also discuss the importance of closing the gap of understanding and empathy between U.S. civilians and the military personnel. This is a highly significant conversation, imperative to meeting this current moment we find ourselves in. We are in a battle to preserve what is left of our Republic. If we want to prevail against the shadowy forces arrayed against us, we the U.S. working stiffs must expand our ideological limits and dissolve the boundaries that keep us divided and bickering amongst ourselves. Part of what animates the two sides in Israel's current judicial-reform crisis has to do with the specific proposals that the Knesset is currently debating. But the crisis is not only about these concrete constitutional issues. It is also a proxy for a larger cultural and sociological conflict pitting different sectors of Israeli society against one another. Critics of the proposed reforms tend to be in the political center and the political left, to be more secular or at least critical of Israel's Orthodox rabbinic establishment, and to be comfortable in the vision of Israel passed down by its largely Ashkenazi founding generation. Supporters of the reforms, meanwhile, tend to be on the political right, to be more religious and more supportive of the rabbinate, and to belong to a coalition of Israelis with roots in the Arab Middle East, North Africa, and, in part, the former Soviet Union. Yehoshua Pfeffer is uniquely positioned to discuss all sides of the issue. A rabbi and the editor of Tzarich Iyun, a magazine of ḥaredi ideas, Pfeffer also clerked on Israel's Supreme Court. He recently wrote an essay in Tzarich Iyun called “No Longer a Minority: Behind the Veil of Israel's Public Unrest.” He joins Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver to discuss that essay and the broader schisms in Israeli society today. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.
