McGill University has announced a bursary to offset the Quebec government's tuition fee hikes for out-of-province students — but most of those students will have to commit to learning French. Mark Kelley talks to McGill's Deputy Provost Fabrice Labeau about the impact on enrollment; and asks Tthe Logic's Martin Patriquin what's behind the changes.

After we turn off our microphones, here at CANADALAND, it would be great to think we brought you the definitive version of the story. But what actually happens is that life keeps on rolling and stories continue to add new chapters. Three stories CANADALAND originally aired in 2021 demanded that we add another chapter to the story we told. First, the case of pretendians and how Indigenous identity has been co-opted by people who are not, in fact, Indigenous. Second, the story of MindGeek, Canada's largest tech company, that is known the world over for its porn platforms, like Porn Hub. When last we left the company, they were under a fair amount of scrutiny... And lastly, in October, we brought you the story of Madeline who was considering medically-assisted death once she ran out of money for the expensive treatments she needed to manage her life-long disease. What ever happened to her? The Desmarais family is by far the most influential Canadian dynasty of the last half-century. But if you don’t live in Quebec, chances are you haven’t even heard of them. Paul Desmarais had Prime Ministers and Premiers in his pocket and billions of dollars at his disposal. He wasn’t just a Laurentian elite; he was the Laurentian emperor. The Bloc Québécois was once a powerful federal political party, forming the official opposition in 1993 and holding around fifty seats in the House in the mid to late 2000's. But the last two elections have nearly wiped the Bloc from existence, and the party has had a revolving door of leaders. This year, Yves-François Blanchet took over the reins. Today on Front Burner, as part of our series on the federal party leaders, we take a look at who Blanchet is and what he stands for with Martin Patriquin, a freelance political journalist based in Montreal.
"For 40 years, sovereignty has been in elections by default because either the party in power or the party in opposition was a sovereigntist party ? that is no longer the case," says long-time Quebec journalist Martin Patriquin. While the question of sovereignty remains front of mind for many Quebecers, this year it wasn't an issue in a Quebec election for the first time in decades. Today on Front Burner, Patriquin sheds light on why the province's separatist movement is struggling, but why it will endure.

As white supremacy and neo-Nazis increase their activities, so too has the coverage of their actions. In this episode of Cable Street, I chat with reporter Martin Patriquin about his work covering neo-Nazis. We discuss how reporters research neo-Nazi networks, the pressure reporters face in response to their stories, the response from these groups, and how reporting on issues has a real-world impact on fighting hate. There was a time when political affiliation was passed down through generations, when families stood by political parties through thick and thin. Today, young people are turning their backs on partisanship labels that would have them waving Liberal, Conservative or NDP flags. Youth regularly refuse to devote themselves to a single camp (only 1% of Canadians are members of political parties) and make their decision on election day, perhaps casting a strategic or single-issue vote, if they vote at all. How are political parties responding to this new reality and working to garner the long-term support of Canadians? Is keeping options open good for democracy? Does partisanship increase with age? Can parties still win the allegiance of this youthful cohort, which will eventually make up the majority of voters? Spur brings together award winning journalists Susan Delacourt and Martin Patriquin, along with pollster Eric Grenier and moderator Jane Hilderman to hash out the details.
Pierre Karl Peladeau is an old-fashioned Media Baron, fully controlling much of the music, publishing, and news industries in Quebec. As journalist Martin Patriquin tells it, he is also a vindictive and powerful enemy of those who cross him or ask the wrong questions. Now, he is also a politician, with a sovereign Quebec as his goal. Support CANADALAND: https://canadaland.com/joinSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
