POPULARITY
Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman spearheaded the Chicago School, popularizing free-market ideas that reshaped American conservatism. But Canada has its own counterpart: the so-called “Calgary School,” a loose group of University of Calgary academics whose ideas helped shape this country's right-of-centre movement. Their influence can be seen in the policies and perspectives of conservative leaders ranging from Stephen Harper and Danielle Smith to Pierre Poilievre. In this episode of West of Centre Short, host Rob Brown speaks with Barry Cooper — the last active, original member of the Calgary School — about how this informal group challenged Canada's traditional, "Laurentian" political and cultural mindset.
Erin is joined by Darrell Bricker, one of Canada's most respected pollsters and thought leaders. Co-Author of The Big Shift, Darrell discusses the decline of the "Laurentian consensus" (a term coined in that book) and the shifting political and cultural landscape as Justin Trudeau leaves office. They also discuss the acute crisis of Canadian identity and how changing demographics and a decade of identity politics are reshaping debate and causing a major decline in Canadian pride at a time that the country needs to come together.

What do four-year-old boys and the electric vehicle (EV) market have in common? Both are obsessed with trucks. Bad business idea: Opening a meth and crack store that immediately gets shut down. Maybe a good business idea? Early investing in the potential decriminalization of hard drugs. Over the summer, analysts were pretty confident that major banks would be interested in buying Laurentian. But now, even the CEO doesn't want to work there. Celebrating something? A wonky constitutional debate has emerged online over who should get first crack at governing in the scenario in which the Conservatives win a minority — Pierre Poilievre as the victorious challenger or Justin Trudeau as the incumbent. While the debate technically hinges on constitutional convention, True North's Andrew Lawton says the Laurentian “experts” are missing the most important part of democracy, which is legitimacy in the eyes of the people supposedly being represented. Also, British Columbia is still clinging to its vaccine mandate for healthcare workers despite being in the receiving end of legal challenges. Lawyer Charlene Le Beau from the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms joins to discuss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This is a segment of episode 342 of Last Born In The Wilderness, “Jumping The Gap: Green Transphobia & Where It Leads w/ John Halstead.” Listen to the full episode: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/john-halstead-3 Read ‘Jumping the Gap: Where Green Transphobia Leads': http://bit.ly/40cdXxU Writer John Halstead returns to the podcast to discuss his widely read article, Jumping the Gap: Where Green Transphobia Leads, published at A Beautiful Resistance. John Halstead's article uses the ideological trajectory of Paul Kingnorth, co-founder of the Dark Mountain Project and a fierce critic of “Big Green environmentalism,” to examine trans-exclusionary politics and rhetoric in certain leftist ecoactivist movements and spaces. John has remarked Kingsnorth was an “intellectual idol” of his, helping him form many of his own ideas about humanity's severed relationship with the earth, with poignant ruminations on the roots of anthropogenic climate change, the dead end of techno-optimism, and industrial civilization's inevitable collapse. But, as Halstead began to more closely examine Kingnorth's writings since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, he, like many others who admired his perspective, was disturbed by his “benevolent green nationalism,” defense of the British monarchy, and openly derisive characterizations of “wokeness” and trans identity. John Halstead is the author of Another End of the World is Possible, in which he explores what it would really mean for our relationship with the natural world if we were to admit that we are doomed. John is a native of the southern Laurentian bioregion and lives in Northwest Indiana, near Chicago. He is a co-founder of 350 Indiana-Calumet, which worked to organize resistance to the fossil fuel industry in the Region. John was the principal facilitator of “A Pagan Community Statement on the Environment.” He strives to live up to the challenge posed by the Statement through his writing and activism. We sat down with retiring Director of Music Ensembles, Barry Torres P'09, '11, to discuss his 25+ year career at St. Lawrence University, what music means to the Laurentian experience, and his upcoming final tour with the Laurentian Singers during spring break in March 2023.
This episode analyzes the extraordinary reading room of Michelangelo's Laurentian Library in Florence, Italy. Faced with having to reduce the weight of the building, Michelangelo designed a type of structural cage into which he inserted layered walls, elegant architectural elements, and handsome furniture. His creative wood ceiling and terracotta floor designs also are part of the overall decorative scheme of this beautiful building.
This episode analyzes Michelangelo's visionary architectural design for the vestibule - better known as the “Ricetto” – of the Laurentian Library. Dominated by the famous staircase which Michelangelo claimed appeared to him in a dream, the space perfectly expresses Michelangelo's radical new vision for Renaissance architecture.
In 1524, the Medici Pope Clement VII asked Michelangelo to design and build a new library to house the extraordinary collection of manuscripts and books owned by the family. The logical location was the Medici-sponsored complex of San Lorenzo. This episode analyzes the construction history of the library and how Michelangelo once again applied his innovative ideas to architecture.

The pickup truck is the symbol of rural conservative masculinity. So, it often takes centre stage in the tired culture wars between reactionary neo-populists and liberal moralists. Like today, with Canada's right crudely embracing the truck–and tweeting furiously about those ‘Laurentian elites,‘ and ‘Toronto columnists‘ who thumb their nose at it. But, if you really want to piss off the libs: don't just post about it. Why not hang some big veiny nuts from your truck? The oil patch is a life-changing industry. It gives people a way out of generational poverty without the burden of enormous student loans and the lag time between entry into the industry and earning potential. You can earn a fair income for your family with a strong work ethic and a desire to learn. I think that's one of the reasons the Laurentian elites hate it so much. In the West, there is no such thing as “old money” and people in the path can earn as much as doctor, depending on what they do and how much they work. There are no social caste gatekeepers in the patch, as there are in liberal academic circles. It's true equality. There is no totem pole of oppression, just one of work experience. And it's not just the people working in the patch that benefit from the jobs. Economic activity created by patch jobs keeps entire communities alive and farmers on the land. The human story of oil and gas growth must be told, likewise the human cost when bad economic and green policies stop development. That's what Robbie Picard from Oilsands Strong is doing with his national bus tour. He is going to visit the people and places of the oil and gas industry and speak to them to show the world who and what the oil patch is. Robbie joins me tonight in an interview we recorded yesterday afternoon when we both visit the Rebel News Calgary HQ.

(Recording date: May 9, 2022) The Eager Beaver Pod asks its guests if they're willing to provide an extended interview, so that we may better get to know them/what makes them tick. When they agree, we package it together and present to you as part of this series. This week's guest, Matthew Pronovost, is an educator, father, volunteer firefighter and proud Franco-Ontarian, from the northern part of the province, who decided that now was the time to roll up his sleeves and get more deeply involved as a candidate for the Ontario Liberal Party in the electoral district of Mushkegowuk-James Bay. We enjoy an extensive discussion during which we touch upon how he came to politics, what he brings to the game, and the policies for which he advocates. We talk about education, health, harm reduction, Laurentian university, northern economic development, and access to education in French, including the dream of an autonomous French language university. It's time to vote; let's make sure it's an informed choice. _____ Because we believe that Democracy Is Something You Do... If good care and treatment of animals is a cause dear to your heart, Veterinarians Without Borders Canada is working with Ukraine animal shelters to get them emergency food, water, and the basics for survival. The pearl-clutching liberal elite in the legacy media revisit their favourite topic – accusing Donald Trump of creating every problem under the sun and pretending that everyone who supports him is a racist far-right terrorist. On today's episode of Fake News Friday on The Candice Malcolm Show, Candice and True North journalist and producer Harrison Faulkner try to parse out the logic in a series of anti-Trump derangement screeds over on the Globe and Mail editorial page. Plus, they talk about how journalists push their agenda and wrap their opinions in news stories – by quoting so-called experts who push the woke far-left ideology. Learn more about your ad choices. The story of Laurentian university closing is a sad one, and there are many reasons why that happened. But one reason suggested by many is the financial pressure that COVID has caused on universities. In Australia, a number of universities decided to stop their support for geology programs. As a country that relies a lot on mining, this seemed to be a short-sighted decision. COVID has undoubtedly accelerated the closure of many geology departments. Today we are joined by Pete Betts from Monash University, who suggests other reasons why geology programs are struggling to keep their place. Maybe it had more to do with the fact that we find it hard to engage the wider society with regards to why our science is important and what value it actually provides.
1647-8When peace talks break down, Iroquois warriors strike into the heart of Huronia, threatening the very existence of the Laurentian coalition.
