With every unidentified body there are some clues which point towards possible answers. All too often these can lead to questions, was the person employed, were they perhaps living rough, or alone. But then there are cases which carry multiple surprises. Even though the Mile End Man died more than half a century ago - there are clues in his case which investigators believe could provide answers. As you listen to this episode, think about whether you can provide the missing link, which can help to identify him. Will you recognise his possessions? Or perhaps his clothing? Perhaps you have links to the areas of London it's thought he frequented. A middle aged, handsome and well-dressed man who suffered an early death - and whose story is still not complete. Jigsaw is a podcast series from What's The Story - brought to you in association with Locate International. There are more than 1,000 unidentified bodies in the UK. All of them could be mothers or fathers, sons or daughters. Their lives have been cut short - but without an ending. Can you help reunite these people with their name?If you want to contribute to the search then join the discussion. Locate International have set up an online forum. Visit https://forum.locate.international and share your ideas and theories with real investigators and fellow listeners. We have ten episodes of Jigsaw for you to listen to, with a new episode every Wednesday. And we'll be back with more episodes of The Missing later in 2024. Hosted on Acast. Nabil from www.privatisethemandem.com joins us to explain how gentrification is a threat to culture and identity as we know it. These past couple decades have seen the UK's cityscapes changing at an increasingly rapid rate. The ends are being replaced with glossy gated-communities, complete with futuristic living facilities, logos and colour palettes to market a glamourous “inner-city living” lifestyle experience (think Elephant & Castle, think Peckham, think Stratford, think Tottenham etc.)— all at the expense of the “mandem”.    However is this a threat to the “ends”?   Privatise the Mandem is a manifesto and blueprint detailing how members of our inner-city communities can acquire the freehold of their buildings through legislative tools such as "Collective Enfranchisement" and the "Right-to-Buy/Acquire". The work argues the necessity of collective ownership of the ends as well as detailing the consequences of delivering on the vision.   - (01:00) Intro - (16:34) The myth of London “integration” - (22:35) How they manipulate you with marketing - (26:54) The myth of private school education - (28:54) Where the word “gentrification” comes from - (29:52) The dark side of “gentrification” - (36:53) How the government ruined poor people housing - (41:48) Why and how WE need to stop gentrification - (47:04) Why it's called “Mile End” - (57:22) Why certain groups never move out the hood Be sure to REVIEW! and FOLLOW our channel so you don't miss our weekly "The Domino Effect" Episodes. When someone loses a loved one, grief becomes an inevitable companion, and receiving the right support becomes essential for fostering a healthy outcome. Grief is an intrinsic aspect of love, representing a lifelong response that brings about profound changes in an individual. During such trying times, providing authentic support to those who are grieving becomes paramount, devoid of dismissive phrases like "I know how you feel" or superficial reassurances. Being present, choosing our words with care, and sharing cherished memories of the deceased while acknowledging them by name can offer solace and validation. This way, we provide an opportunity to honor the departed by speaking their name aloud once again. In a candid discussion, Alison Potter delves into the intricacies of grief and comfort, recounting her personal journey after losing her husband. She also sheds light on the valuable work of Give A Mile in the end-of-life space, and her business, Expected Outcome.   Alison is a palliative RN and a volunteer with Give A Mile, a registered charity in both Canada and the US. Their mission is to provide flights for people at end-of-life to connect with their loved ones for a final goodbye. Since they started, they have given away nine hundred and sixty-four (964) free flights, and their goal is to make it a thousand (1000) this year, their tenth anniversary year. Alison has been a Registered Nurse for almost 40 years, worked for over 25 years as a Palliative Care Nurse in Palliative Home Care, Palliative Consult Team in Acute Care, and was the Director of Clinical Care at Rosedale Hospice in Calgary from 2009 to 2018. KingTone's The Duellist is currently Ariel Posen's most-used pedal. One side of the dual drive (the Bluesbreaker voicing) is always on. But there's another duality at play when Posen plugs in—the balance between songwriter and guitarist.“These days, I like listening to songs and the story and the total package,” Posen told PG back in 2019, when talking about his solo debut, How Long, after departing from his sideman slot for the Bros. Landreth. “Obviously, I'm known as a guitar player, but my music and the music I write is not guitar music. It's songs, and it goes back to the Beatles. I love songs, and I love story and melody and singing, and there was a lot of detail and attention put into the guitar sound and the playing and the parts—almost more than I've ever done.”And in 2021, he found himself equally expressing his yin-and-yang artistry by releasing two albums that represented both sides of his musicality. First, Headway continued the sultry sizzle of songwriting featured on How Long. Then he surprised everyone, especially guitarists, by dropping Mile End, which is a 6-string buffet of solo dishes with nothing but Ariel and his instrument of choice. But what should fans expect when they see him perform live? “I just trust my gut. I can reach more people by playing songs, and I get moved more by a story and lyrics and harmony, so that's where I naturally go. The live show is a lot more guitar centric. If you want to hear me stretch out on some solos, come see a show. I want the record and the live show to be two separate things.”The afternoon ahead of Posen's headlining performance at Nashville's Basement East, the guitar-playing musical force invited PG's Chris Kies on stage for a robust chat about gear. The 30-minute conversation covers Posen's potent pair of moody blue bombshells—a hollow, metal-bodied Mule Resophonic and a Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster—and why any Two-Rock is his go-to amp. He also shares his reasoning behind avoiding effects loops and volume pedals.Brought to you by D'Addario XPND Pedalboard.

Tom Devlin is a key figure in the world of graphic novels. His career mimics the evolution of the genre. As founder of Highwater Books, a publishing house he set up in the early 2000s, he treated alternative comics audiences in North America to their first book-length exposure to future star cartoonist/authors John Porcellino, Marc Bell, Ron Rege Jr., Brian Ralph and others - many of whom subsequently joined him at Drawn and Quarterly, the Montreal-based publishing house founded by Chris Oliveros. Tom now works at D&Q as executive editor (and co-owner) alongside his wife, publisher Peggy Burns. His early work - its high production values, thoughtful design and 'bookshelf-ready' formats, plus experience earned as a comics retailer and distributor - presaged, one could say, an explosion in the popularity of graphic novels, one that was amply fueled by the impressive stuff he put out with various artists over the years at D&Q.    I talk with Tom about his early love of comics, his work in comic book stores and his experiences publishing graphic novels; about his life with cartoonists and his work helping to build D&Q, plus the struggle experienced by the medium itself to be taken seriously. Drawn and Quarterly: Twenty Five Years of Contemporary Cartooning, Comics, and Graphic Novels serves as our guide.    We met underneath the well-walked wooden floors of La Petite Librairie D+Q, the company's children's retail bookstore outlet in the Mile End district of Montreal.

Smoked meat and bagels. Both of these foods were made popular in Montreal's Mile End neighbourhood which, at one time, was mainly home to Jewish immigrants. It is also where my father grew up. On a recent trip to dad's old stomping grounds, I spoke to two general managers of Mile End's culinary institutions: Schwartz's Deli and St-Viateur Bagel. We chatted about the history of their businesses and the enduring popularity of their food. Both destinations were favourites of Anthony Bourdain and Leonard Cohen. Jorn Schmidt grew up in Germany, where he studied Philosophy. Jorn moved to Canada in 2005. His first contact with screen printing was in Berlin, where he tried to support himself during his  Ph.D studies. He would sell t-shirts and other things on the weekend at a local flea market. The first t-shirt Jorn ever designed and printed depicted the Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, part of what he now calls The 'Philosophers' series. When Jorn moved to Canada for romantic reasons, he discovered that continuing his  studies proved more difficult and lengthier than anticipated. Again, Jorn turned to making t-shirts, which he sold online, mostly through ebay. Jorn taught himself  basic programming skills and soon launched his own website. At the same time he shifted from the Philosophers to urban scenes, which would attract a larger audience. Production initially  took place at his home until the next big step in 2015. With sales going up and his designs also available in local shops, Jorn opened his own shop in Montreal's Mile End area. Initially the idea was to have a workshop and Jorn hoped that a bit of foot traffic would help to cover the rent. Seven years later, the shop was featured in some of the local  guide books. On today's episode Jorn talks about starting his t-shirt business, his interest in philosophy and his infamous racoon design. Interested in seeing some of Jorn's work. Titres joués extraits de l'album José Louis and the Paradox of Love - Church - Coupé - Papa Wemba voir le clip - No No No - Sahara + bonus voir le clip Kilimanjaro.   Réalisation : Laurie Plisson.
