Chandler Levack is another of the current class of talented Candian ladies directing fresh, original cinema. Her latest is MILE END KICKS (starring Barbie Ferreira)…and, at the same moment, ROOMMATES, a Happy Madison film starring Sadie Sandler. And she memorably broke onto screen with festival darling I LIKE MOVIES. She joins Jordan to give us a fresh look at our show's most relatable multi-hyphenate, Greta Gerwig. Chandler tells stories inspired by the desire to revisit her own history, and the result (like FRANCES HA or LADYBIRD for Gerwig) is somehow universally relatable. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about a little movie that could called Blind Cop 2 (read her feature about it from The Action Desk!) Help support this show and unlock bonus content! GG Hawkins talks with writer-director Chandler Levack about making I Like Movies, Mile End Kicks, and Roommates, and how Levack protects a specific filmmaking voice while moving between indie features and studio comedy. They discuss the realities of Canadian film financing, directing with limited time and bigger resources, building cinematic worlds through research and memory, and why filmmakers have to keep making work instead of treating one movie as their only chance. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest Chandler Levack discuss... How I Like Movies helped open doors for Mile End Kicks Why Mile End Kicks had to be shot in Montreal's Mile End neighborhood The overlap of finishing one film while prepping and shooting another What changed when Levack moved from indie filmmaking to a studio comedy How music journalism shaped Levack's directing and world building Why specificity in props, costumes, locations, and character details matters Navigating male-dominated creative spaces as a woman filmmaker The value and complications of film criticism Building a body of work through collaboration, experimentation, and persistence Memorable Quotes: “For me, I mean I'm obsessed with specificity.” “I think for me once I realized that filmmaking is just talking about treating fake people like they're real…” “It's weird. It's the only job where you're failing in public…” “The greatest thing you can do as a filmmaker is just exist and keep making stuff good and bad and having a body of work is like the most important thing…” Guests: Chandler Levack Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram
It's s super-stylish Saturday here at Breakfast All Day. We took Friday off to honor the May Day work stoppage, but we're back to kick off your weekend. Here's what we reviewed: THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2. Twenty years later, everyone's back at Runway magazine, but Runway magazine is a shell of its former self. This is a sad movie about the state of modern journalism, but the clothes are still fun. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt star. This one's gonna be huge. In theaters. THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (2006). Of course we had to go back and review the original film, which was a massive, crowd-pleasing hit that remains infinitely meme-able. It's the definition of the breezy, escapist rom-com. The sequel is very different. HOKUM. Adam Scott goes to Ireland and stays in a charming, countryside inn. Weird things start happening. Writer-director Damian McCarthy's film is a trip, and Scott is great in it. In theaters. MILE END KICKS. We both loved this romantic comedy, which takes place in the cool Montreal neighborhood of Mile End. Barbie Ferreira stars as a young music critic who moves to the city in the summer of 2011 to cover its indie rock scene. From writer-director Chandler Levack. In theaters. Thanks for spending part of your weekend with us! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is like a slightly degraded photocopy of the first film, less vibrancy and flare but enough of the original formula to not upset hardcore fans. This week on End Credits, we grow up. The movie this week is another coming of age story about a young person finding themselves but the twist is that it's a Canadian movie about a Canadian in Canada. We will review Mile End Kicks, which you can now (and should) see in theatres everywhere, and we will also talk about *that* festival in France! This Wednesday, April 22, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Tim Phillips will discuss: Yes We Cannes. In a couple of weeks, Hollywood heads to the south of France for the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival. What makes Cannes different? Well, it's exclusively for people in the industry, and the press, so you can't just line up and buy rush tickets, but in recent years it's been more famous for how long people stand and clap at the end, or whether or not they booed. Instead, we'll talk about some of our favourite Cannes movie premieres. REVIEW: Mile End Kicks (2026). The year is 2011, and the place is Montreal. Aspiring Toronto Burlington music critic Grace Pine is here to find love (or at least sex) and write a book about Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill, but sometimes important life lessons and the lead singer of an up and coming band have other ideas. Chandler Levack's follow-up to I Like Movies is another coming of age slice from her own life, but can Levack capture that same magic, not to mention a sense of nostalgic early 21st century Canadiana, again? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Q&A with director Chandler Levack on her filmes Roommates and Mile End Kicks. Roommates - When a hopeful, naive college freshman, Devon, asks the cool and confident Celeste to be her roommate, a blossoming friendship spirals into a war of passive aggression. Mile End Kicks - A 24-year-old music critic gets romantically involved with members of an indie band she decides to publicize.
This week, we've got filmmaker Chandler Levack who actually has two new films out. The first is Mile End Kicks which is based on her own life as a music journalist and is set against the backdrop of the Montreal music scene of the late '00s and early '10s. The other film is comedy Roommates which was made for Netflix under Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company. We talked to Chandler about recreating the Montreal of her 20s for Mile End Kicks, getting the music and other details right, getting indie musicians to score her movies, how she got hooked up with Adam Sandler's company just after releasing her terrific, feature film debut, I Like Movies, Montreal bands she thinks deserve more attention, and more. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein Photo: Greg Gorman

"Mile End Kicks" is a 2025 Canadian romantic comedy film written and directed by Chandler Levack. Based in part on Levack's own young adulthood before becoming a professional music critic and filmmaker, the film stars Barbie Ferreira as Grace Pine, a young woman who moves to Montreal, Quebec, in 2011 to write a book about Alanis Morissette's album Jagged Little Pill but instead becomes romantically involved with Archie (Devon Bostick) and Chevy (Stanley Simons), two members of the aspiring indie rock band Bone Patrol, and takes a job as the band's publicist. The cast also includes Jay Baruchel, Juliette Gariépy, Robert Naylor, Emily Lê, Hasani Freeman, Magi Merlin, and Isaiah Lehtinen. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews. Levack was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Sumerian. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Al's back in your ears with a proper mixed bag: TfL quietly tests smarter detection tech on Tube tracks (eyes peeled at Mile End) and roads with radar cameras, while the UK's next-gen Skynet military satellite plan sparks a very serious “who controls what” debate. Communities Secretary Steve Reed, who is in charge of local government, has said he is “appalled” that serving London councillors are campaigning to become MPs in another country. He wrote to Tower Hamlets Council after it was revealed by The Standard that at least two of the borough's elected representatives had launched campaigns to stand in upcoming elections in Bangladesh. Residents in Mile End have called on Sabina Khan to resign after she announced she was standing for the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) in polls in February. Independent councillor Ohid Ahmed, who represents Lansbury ward in Poplar, is also campaigning to become a BNP candidate. It comes as government envoys were sent into Tower Hamlets Council last year, over concerns about the party's leadership, governance and culture. But are these councillors breaking the law by running for office abroad? The Standard's Chief Political Correspondent Rachael Burford joins us with the latest. Hosted on Acast. This week at our Mile End service, Kenny teaches from Paul's testimony to the crowd in Jerusalem (Acts 21:37-22:21). We look at the significance of sharing our story with those who don't know Jesus, and our call to be ‘in the world but not of it'. We see the power in identifying with those in our life who don't follow Jesus – sharing our own past and common experiences, and how encountering Jesus has made a difference to our lives, and to the way we live.

This week at our Mile End service, Darren Wolf (guest speaker) explored Jesus' radical redefinition of family in Mark 3. We see how following Jesus shifts our allegiance and identity into a new spiritual community, which challenges both traditional and modern-day notions family. The Church as our new family calls for commitment and connection, as we live in covenant with brothers and sisters in Christ.
This week at our Mile End service, Andy Tilsley preached from John's Gospel and its connection to our longing for ‘Eden life' – the fullness of life intended by God since creation in Genesis 1. We look at how Jesus, as the ‘second Adam', re-enters Eden through his death and resurrection, and invites us back into deep personal connection with God, and commissions us to bring others into this life they were created for.
For our baby dedications at Mile End, Lyndsey recounts the story of Paul and Silas's miraculous prison release, the jailer's conversion, and his entire household being baptised. Through it, we look at how the story of Scripture transforms our understanding of who we are as God's 'image-bearers', and how this can teach our children not just to believe in biblical principles, but to be ‘Jesus-people' in our world today.

With every unidentified body there are some clues which point towards possible answers. All too often these can lead to questions, was the person employed, were they perhaps living rough, or alone. But then there are cases which carry multiple surprises. Even though the Mile End Man died more than half a century ago - there are clues in his case which investigators believe could provide answers. As you listen to this episode, think about whether you can provide the missing link, which can help to identify him. Will you recognise his possessions? Or perhaps his clothing? Perhaps you have links to the areas of London it's thought he frequented. A middle aged, handsome and well-dressed man who suffered an early death - and whose story is still not complete. Jigsaw is a podcast series from What's The Story - brought to you in association with Locate International. There are more than 1,000 unidentified bodies in the UK. Episode 50 of Hospice Explained: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hospice-explained-podcast/id1558665301?i=1000599290581 Website: https://giveamile.org/ www.hospiceexplained.com Speaking Their Name: Keys to Supporting the Bereaved with Alison Potter from Give a Mile End-of-life, death, bereavement, and grief are undeniably sensitive topics, but they are an inherent part of the human experience. When someone loses a loved one, grief becomes an inevitable companion, and receiving the right support becomes essential for fostering a healthy outcome. Grief is an intrinsic aspect of love, representing a lifelong response that brings about profound changes in an individual. During such trying times, providing authentic support to those who are grieving becomes paramount, devoid of dismissive phrases like "I know how you feel" or superficial reassurances. Being present, choosing our words with care, and sharing cherished memories of the deceased while acknowledging them by name can offer solace and validation. This way, we provide an opportunity to honor the departed by speaking their name aloud once again. In a candid discussion, Alison Potter delves into the intricacies of grief and comfort, recounting her personal journey after losing her husband. She also sheds light on the valuable work of Give A Mile in the end-of-life space, and her business, Expected Outcome. Alison is a palliative RN and a volunteer with Give A Mile, a registered charity in both Canada and the US. Their mission is to provide flights for people at end-of-life to connect with their loved ones for a final goodbye. Since they started, they have given away nine hundred and sixty-four (964) free flights, and their goal is to make it a thousand (1000) this year, their tenth anniversary year. Alison has been a Registered Nurse for almost 40 years, worked for over 25 years as a Palliative Care Nurse in Palliative Home Care, Palliative Consult Team in Acute Care, and was the Director of Clinical Care at Rosedale Hospice in Calgary from 2009 to 2018.
