Officially known in French as La Journée nationale des Patriotes, National Patriots' Day is a provincial holiday in Quebec observed annually on the Monday preceding May 25, while the rest of Canada take the day off work to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday, known as Victoria Day. National Patriots' Day commemorates the 1837-1838 Rebellions in Lower Canada and honors the Patriots who fought the British colonial power for political freedom, democracy, and national recognition. The Patriots, led by figures like Louis-Joseph Papineau, staged an armed rebellion against British colonial rule to establish a democratic and representative government. For a while, the holiday was known as Dollard and Chenier Day, to immortalize garrison commander of Fort Ville-Marie (now Montreal) and Adam Dollard des Ormeaux Jean-Olivier Chénier (1806-37), a Patriot commander killed in action during the1837 Battle of Saint-Eustache. National Patriots' Day falls on the cusp of warmer weather, it is widely treated by Quebecers as the unofficial start of the summer season. Canada’s civil war ended unsuccessfully with the deporting, in chains, of nine prominent French Canadians to the tropical “Island Paradise” of Bermuda as political prisoners. The province of Quebec was about to vote on whether to become a sovereign nation. Just days before a referendum on that very question, tens of thousands of Canadians from across the country poured into Montreal. Travelling by planes and trains - they gathered for what would become known as the Unity Rally. October 30th marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most pivotal and divisive moments in Quebec history. On that day, Quebeckers held a referendum on whether or not to secede from Canada.The votes against independence won out by a tiny margin — 50.6% voted "no," while 49.4% voted yes.A new Léger poll shows that Quebecers' attitudes on sovereignty have shifted significantly in the last 30 years. Sixty five percent of respondents said they'd vote 'no' on separating from Canada if asked to vote today. Fifty five percent said they do not believe Quebec has the economic means to become a sovereign nation.On Vermont Edition, two Canadian political science professors shared their memories of the 1995 referendum. Luc Turgeon was a college student at the time at McGill University in Montreal. He is now a professor at the University of Ottawa in Ontario. Antonia Maioni was Turgeon's professor; she still teaches at McGill. Callers from the U.S. and Canada also joined the conversation.

Quebec is a crucial battleground in this election, with enough seats to give any party a decisive lead. But with U.S. President Donald Trump's threats and tariffs roiling Canadian politics, some Quebecers only seem sure of what they're voting against, not for. Episode 338: The Great North American Ice Storm of January 1998 was a devastating natural disaster caused by five consecutive ice storms affecting eastern Ontario, southern Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, northern New York, and central Maine. Montreal and southern Quebec were hardest hit, with freezing rain from January 4th to 9th accumulating up to 100 millimetres, collapsing trees, power lines, and steel towers. Nearly 3.5 million Quebecers and 600,000 Ontarians lost power, with blackouts lasting up to 33 days. The storm claimed 34 lives and led to the largest Canadian military deployment since the Korean War. The disaster tested the resilience of residents, who endured extreme cold and isolation while demonstrating heroism and community spirit.
