Economist Jessica Riedl, Sr. Fellow at Manhattan Institute, explains why she thinks the White House is misreading the role of tariffs. From the overlooked logic of trade deficits as capital surpluses to the bond market's surprising sway over Trump's strategy, Riedl shares her take on what's really driving U.S. policy. We also look at how Congress has slowly surrendered its power, the chaos behind DOGE's recent spending cuts, and why America's political climate might be holding back rational decision-making. If what Trump said in the Oval Office yesterday doesn't send a chill up your spine, then you've forgotten what America is. Or you're way too dangerously partisan. And once you throw due process out the window for anyone, you throw it out the window for yourself. And one more problem…we're not even speaking off the same basic fact sheets. Hosted on Acast. We've got a special edition of Peach Pundit the Podcast for you. Just before Christmas, I interviewed Tim Redmond, the author of a recent book, Political Tribalism in America: How Hyper-Partisanship Dumbs Down Democracy and How to Fix It. Tim received his PhD from SUNY Buffalo, and he currently teaches in the Buffalo area. He is also the teacher training director for the Academy for Human Rights. And for fans of hardcore, Tim is the drummer for the Buffalo-based Snapcase. While I gather that most of our listening audience aren't huge hardcore and punk rock fans, Snapcase is well known in those circles. I grew up with Progression Through Unlearning and Designs for Automation blaring out of my car stereo or at work. Actually, I still rock out to those two records on a regular basis. Tim and I discuss the state of our politics and how we, as citizens, can educate and inform ourselves to put the United States back on a more stable track. We also talk a little about Snapcase, and their plans in the coming months. Scot, Buzz, and I are recording our first regular episode of 2025 this evening, so be on the lookout for that.

Send us a Text Message. Can political tribalism be overcome for the greater good? Join us as we sit down with insightful political author, Michael Anderson, to untangle the complexities of today's political landscape. Michael, known for his moderate yet conservatively-leaning views, provides a balanced take on the worldviews of both the left and the right, stressing the importance of tradition and gradual change. We dissect the recent presidential debate, critiquing both Trump and Biden, while reflecting on the tough job moderators face. Our conversation aims to shed light on the urgent need to diminish extreme voices and promote a more centrist, constructive political discourse. In another compelling segment, we address the monumental hurdles third parties face in breaking through the U.S. political duopoly. Michael and I unpack the systemic barriers erected by Democrats and Republicans to maintain their dominance, making it nearly impossible for alternative movements to succeed. We also tackle the viability of libertarian ideology in today's governance and discuss the public's yearning for fresh political candidates beyond the Trump-Biden era. Personal reflections on independent thinking underscore our discussion, emphasizing the merit of evaluating ideas beyond partisan politics. The harmful impact of tribalism on America is our next focus, where we explore how social media amplifies divisive voices and fuels misinformation. Drawing on the book "America's Counterfeit Democracy," we delve into how wealthy elites manipulate political outcomes, often sidelining public opinion. This chapter highlights the need for public awareness and critical engagement with content to combat social media tribalism. As we wrap up, we call for thoughtful interaction and vigilance against misinformation, stressing that reducing tribalism is essential for a healthier political environment. The "Doom Loop" of Polarization Political beliefs are often shaped by party affiliations rather than the other way around, contributing to the phenomenon of political tribalism. Individuals align themselves with a particular political party, and in doing so, adopt the party's established set of beliefs and ideologies. This process is not always driven by a deep examination of personal values but rather a desire for belonging and identity within a group. As a result, people may conform to the party's stance on various issues, even if those positions do not entirely align with their individual convictions. This conformity fosters an environment where party loyalty takes precedence over independent thought, leading to a polarized political landscape. The reinforcement of party identity becomes a powerful force, making it challenging for individuals to deviate from the accepted party narrative, ultimately perpetuating the "Doom Loop" of Polarization. The democratic ideal demands that the citizenry think critically about matters of public import. Yet many Democrats and Republicans in the United States have fallen short of that standard because political tribalism motivates them to acquire, perceive and evaluate political information in a biased manner. The result is an electorate that is more extreme, hostile and willing to reject unfavorable democratic outcomes. Shermer and Redmond discuss: why we have political duopoly (Duverger's law) • parties vs. policies • Are we living in a post-truth, fake-news, alternative facts world? • How do we know political polarization is worse now than in the past? • acquiring, perceiving, and evaluating political information • evaluating: false political information, political numbers and arguments, claims of rigged election • whataboutism • cognitive responsibilities of citizenship • cognitive biases • political polarization • myside bias • numeracy vs. innumeracy • solutions to the polarization problem. Timothy J. Redmond received his PhD in political science from the University at Buffalo. He is an award-winning educator and author of over one hundred articles on critical thinking and politics. He is a professor at Daemen University where he teaches a political science and history course for education students.

Have you noticed that you've been more anxious recently? Have political differences put a strain on a relationship with a friend or family member? Has politics caused division in your church? Society is increasingly polarized and tribal. And unfortunately, we as Christians are often not immune, but at times even the worst offenders. In this episode, Patrick Miller, an author of Truth Over Tribe, helps us see the causes of our tribalism to pursue a healthier Christian political engagement.
‘I think there's some hope, but we're in quite a troubling time.' - UW Professor Jake Grumbach

An interview with Guru Prasad, a social researcher on Political Tribalism.
"Yuh cain't be a democrat and be a Christian!" - Many of us were taught that growing up. But is it true? Is there only one political party for Christians? And if it's true - why are so many younger Christians going away from that idea? This week we talk about the tribalism that comes with our current political climate and how Christians should approach things differently.Follow us on social:http://instagram.com/jonathan_caronehttp://instagram.com/ericw712https://www.tiktok.com/@jonathan_caronehttps://www.tiktok.com/@ericw712https://www.twitter.com/@jonathan_caronehttps://www.twitter.com/@ericw712Show theme song: High School - 90's Kids Hosted on Acast. The deep divisions between us have people asking are we still one nation? If so, how long? Questions that were on the fringe of political debate have become mainstream. With such issues looming as the right to choose vs. the right to life, the second amendment vs. gun control, closed borders – and who gets to patrol them – vs. sanctuary cities, the peaceful transition of power vs. the January 6th insurrection, evangelism vs. secularism or even free markets vs. democratic socialism, are the divisions between us so deep that red states and blue states are heading for a break up? Most important of all, what should we do about it?Tonight, YLR Hosts Jeff Hayden and Dean Johnson are joined by David French, the author of Divided We Fall: The Secession Threat And How To Restore Our Nation.Questions for Jeff, Dean and their guests? While Curtis is still on sabbatical, David talks to Justin Giboney, co-founder of the AND Campaign, about racial justice, political tribalism, and the “God gap” in the Democratic Party. They discuss the problems with left and right as they grapple with extremism, and they talk about Justin's experiences talking about hot-button topics from a politically heterodox (but theologically orthodox) point of view. The Purple Principle celebrates July 4th with its first episode in a miniseries on America's great independent voices. Amy Chua, known for her bestselling Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, is a Yale law professor and author of Political Tribes. “Every group feels attacked, pitted against other groups not just for jobs and spoils, but for the right to define the nation's identity. In these conditions, democracy devolves into zero-sum group competition. Pure political tribalism.” In a conversation with TPP host Rob Pease, Chua talks about the challenges of speaking to a fragmented student body. She also discusses the degradation of our shared national identity as marginalized groups increasingly denigrate traditional American ideals. These and related topics explored on this special July 4th episode. Enjoy the show, and don't forget to rate & review us at: ratethispodcast.com/purple How'd you hear about The Purple Principle? Episode 15 (11/19/21) “Morning Joe” Scarborough decries political tribalism as he stokes it * Steve Bannon, grifter or holy warrior?
Politics used to take a backseat to economics, but at some point that all changed. The average American today is better off financially than they were before the pandemic, but consumer confidence – our economic outlook – is in the tank. Why? It's politics, of course. In this episode of The Dumbest Guy in the Room, Tony Fratto, the former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and current partner at Hamilton Place Strategies, joins host John Dick to discuss the friction between political tribalism and economic truth, how government and media have failed in explaining basic policy virtues to the American people, and why bagel sandwiches kind of suck.
Markus and Drew discuss the current state of the arts and their slow cultural demise. Ayaan talks with Amy Chua about how America has always demonstrated a poor understanding of tribal relations in other cultures, a weakness that makes the country ill-prepared to navigate the increasing tribalism of its own domestic politics. Amy shares her work on ‘market dominant minorities’ and ‘super-groups,’ as both women express concern about the growing political “us vs them” mentality in the United States. Amy Chua is a Professor of Law at Yale Law School. She received both her A.B. and her J.D. from Harvard University and was Executive Editor of the Harvard Law Review. After practicing on Wall Street, she joined the Yale Law faculty in 2001. Her latest book is Political Tribes: Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations. In an era of increasing social isolation, platforms like Facebook and Twitter are among the most important tools we have to understand each other. But user behavior suggests that these platforms are also powering deep social divisions online. What is the truth? What can we do to find a balance? Sociologist Christopher Bail joined us to challenge common myths about echo chambers, foreign misinformation campaigns, and radicalizing algorithms, with support from his book Breaking the Social Media Prism: How to Make Our Platforms Less Polarizing. He explained that, rather than using social media as a mirror to decipher our place in society, it functions more like a prism that distorts our identities, empowers status-seeking extremists, and renders moderates all but invisible. Backed by innovative online experiments and in-depth interviews with social media users from across the political spectrum, Bail examined how stepping outside of our echo chambers can make us more polarized. He took us inside the minds of online extremists, and gleans fresh solutions to counter political tribalism from the bottom up and the top down. And what might the virtual public square look like with a total reset and redesign from scratch? Join him for data-driven recommendations for strengthening our social media connections, combating online polarization without deleting our accounts. Christopher Bail is professor of sociology and public policy at Duke University, where he directs the Polarization Lab. He is the author of Terrified: How Anti-Muslim Fringe Organizations Became Mainstream. Buy the Book: https://www.elliottbaybook.com/book/9780691203423 Presented by Town Hall Seattle. How did American politics become so polarized? MSNBC's Steve Kornacki points to clash of two larger-than-life characters in the 1990s, Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, as the origin of our viciously tribal politics. In The Red and The Blue: The 1990s and the Birth of Political Tribalism (Ecco, 2018), Kornacki traces... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
