This is a short selection from an article I wrote in early summer 2025.Alex Tétreault started putting down written words for as long as he can remember. “It was a bit of an escape for me, and I just found it really fun.” He is Greater Sudbury's 8th Poet Laureate. Writing can be a liberating, but also sequestering process. For Tétreault this tension is very important. “It allows me to be as specific or as vague as I want and it gives me the time to reflect and choose the right words to get my ideas across the way that I want them to.” The play he crafted is in book form too. It is in French.“It was first produced by me and the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (TNO) in June 2023. Because theatre is ephemeral and I wanted this story to keep being told. I submitted it to Prise de parole for publication and here we are. As a thoughtexercise I did translate it for a performance.”His play (and now book) Nickel City Fifs is setin Sudbury at Zigs Bar... Yes, the iconic Zigs is still open. “I wrote it and direct it, but oh God, no, I don't act in it,” he laughs long. What is the underlying pinch that made him write it? “For me I really wanted my Francophone and Queer identities to co-exist. I was always trying to get more French into Sudbury PRIDE.” Tétreault sees the work he does as very Sudbury-centric but applicable to the wider world.

CIP 168: Express Entry Getting it Right - Language Tests

Canadian Immigration Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2025 34:29

Episode Summary In this episode of the Canadian Immigration Podcast, host Mark Holthe and co-host Alicia Backman-Beharry unpack one of the most overlooked but impactful aspects of Express Entry: language testing. As one of the few areas where applicants can directly influence their CRS score, the language test often becomes the make-or-break factor in receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Mark and Alicia take a deep dive into why language tests matter more than ever, how to choose the right test, and what pitfalls to avoid when entering your results into your Express Entry profile. They also examine the crucial role French proficiency now plays in Express Entry scoring, especially in the context of category-based draws and the federal government's push for Francophone immigration. Whether you're building your Express Entry profile or trying to increase your CRS score, this episode offers a detailed, practical guide to getting it right—before you risk a refusal or misrepresentation allegation. Key Topics Discussed The Power of Language Tests in Express Entry Why language test scores are one of the most controllable and impactful factors in your CRS score. How they affect eligibility under CEC, FSW, and category-based draws. Examples of missed opportunities due to expired or invalid test results. Approved Tests and Common Pitfalls A breakdown of approved English and French tests: CELPIP, IELTS (General), PTE Core, TEF, and TCF. Key differences between test formats and how they affect your performance. Why using the wrong version (e.g., IELTS Academic) can invalidate your score. Test Validity and Expiry Rules How long your test results are valid (and what date counts). What happens if your results expire between your ITA and eAPR. When to retake the test to avoid losing points—or your application. CRS Boosting Strategies The significance of CLB 7 and CLB 9: minimum thresholds vs. competitive scoring. The points advantage of adding French as a second language (up to 74 extra points). How dual-language applicants can outperform others in a tight draw environment. Data Entry and Misrepresentation Risks How to correctly input test codes, registration numbers, and scores in your profile. The hidden dangers of typing errors and mismatched documentation. What to do if your test expires mid-application. Retesting and Test Selection Strategy Why retaking a test can make a meaningful difference. Choosing between CELPIP, IELTS, and PTE based on format, availability, and your strengths. How to leverage test prep and targeted coaching to improve scores. Key Takeaways Language tests are one of the best ways to increase your CRS score quickly and legally. Accuracy matters: a small data entry error can cost you your ITA—or worse. CLB 9 opens the door to significant bonus points through skill transferability. French proficiency is now a game-changer under category-based draws. Retesting and preparation are strategic tools, not just last-ditch efforts. Quotes from the Episode Mark Holthe: "If there's one part of your Express Entry profile that you can control—and improve—it's your language test score." Alicia Backman-Beharry: "People miss out on invitations every week because of expired scores or invalid test versions. Don't let that be you." French Moroccan Leïla Slimani‘s own family was the inspiration when she started her critically acclaimed trilogy: The Country of Others, Watch Us Dance and this year's publication, J'emporterai le feu (“I will carry the fire”).We follow the Belhaj family through three generations, from when Mathilde leaves France to follow her new husband Amine to his home country Morocco after the second world war, and their struggle to find their place between two cultures that are rather hostile to each other, to their daughter, Aïcha through her childhood in Morocco and studies in France, before the last book takes the story up to our time through Aïcha's daughter Mia.This epic family saga contains love stories and sex, violence and racism, while the family's path is continually affected by the historical currents of Morocco and the wider world. French Mathilde grapple with the strict role for women in the Moroccan countryside, while her daughter Aïcha feels ogled and set apart as a Moroccan in France. In a vibrant and immediate language, Slimani portrays the various family members' struggles to belong, and to create a home and a family.Leïla Slimani is one of the most central Francophone authors today. Her definitive breakthrough came with the award-winning thriller Lullaby, for which she was awarded the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 2016. She has written a number of critically acclaimed novels and non fiction titles.Slimani was joined by associate professor of French literature, Kjerstin Aukrust, for a conversation about home, belonging and a family history. Claire de Mézerville López is joined by co-host, Executive Director of IIRP Canada, Pat Lewis, for a special IIRP Canada series, highlighting the use of restorative practices and restorative justice across Canada. In this episode, they welcome long-time educator and bilingual consultant Peggy Barrette to the Restorative Works! Podcast. Peggy joins us to share her journey of integrating restorative practices in French-speaking communities across Canada. Raised in a small, predominantly Francophone town in Northern Ontario, Peggy shares the impact of growing up straddling both French and English identities—and how those early experiences shaped her commitment to creating safe, authentic spaces for connection. Peggy discusses the cultural and linguistic challenges of bringing restorative practices to Francophone communities, where true equity demands more than just translation—it requires cultural relevance, deep listening, and honoring lived experiences. From fighting the pitfalls of superficial translations to ensuring French-speaking practitioners see themselves reflected in the tools and training they receive, Peggy unpacks what meaningful involvement really looks like. Peggy Barrette has more than 30 years of experience in the field of education. She is a bilingual (French and English) trainer and consultant for IIRP Canada. Peggy was born and raised in Hearst, a small, predominantly French town in Northern Ontario. She studied French at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and received her master's in educational administration from the same university.  Peggy spent 13 years working with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board and the remainder of her career with Trillium Lakelands District School Board in Ontario, where she led professional learning in French and English. As a school administrator, she has gained invaluable experience implementing restorative practices within diverse school communities.  Tune in to learn more about working in bilingual contexts, navigating cultural identity in your community, and how language can shape the restorative journey.

Update on invitations to apply for the Yukon Nominee Program in 2025, released by Yukon on 23 May 2025 Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Territorial News Bulletin from the Territory of Yukon. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.  |  The Government of Yukon has begun sending out invitations to apply to the Yukon Nominee Program in 2025.  Invitations are being sent to selected employers who submitted an expression of interest during the intake period.  Selected employers will receive an invitation by email with instructions on how to submit a full application.  The department will also be notifying:  employers who have not been selected to submit a full application at this time but have been added to the random selection pool; and employers or individuals who submitted an expression of interest but were found ineligible. During the expression of interest intake, the Government of Yukon received more submissions aligned with the 2025 priorities than the number of available nomination spots. The Government of Yukon is prioritizing applicants who previously received a temporary measure letter of support. Remaining application spots will be randomly selected from other qualifying submissions.  Qualifying submissions include candidates in the following priority areas:  Foreign nationals who have lived and worked in the Yukon for at least one year Yukon University graduates Francophone or French-speaking candidates Temporary measure letter of support recipients This approach allows the Government of Yukon to prioritize applications from employers whose positions and candidates align with the 2025 priorities, rather than using a first-come, first-served model.  Priority areas for 2025 were identified through ongoing discussions with industry organizations and feedback from the Yukon business community. The Government of Yukon will continue to work with industry organizations to address the Yukon's labour market needs, as well as the needs of employers and foreign nationals who contribute to the Yukon.  Quick facts The expression of interest intake period for the Yukon Nominee Program was open from March 31, 2025, at 9 am to April 22, 2025, at 4:30 pm Yukon Standard Time.  Through the expression of interest intake, the Government of Yukon received 502 eligible submissions. Of those, 392 aligned with the identified priorities for 2025.  Priority areas for 2025 were identified based on close discussion with industry organizations and feedback from the Yukon business community.  The maximum number of foreign nationals that the Yukon can nominate in 2025 is 215.   | You can always access past news from the Territory of Yukon by visiting this link: https://myar.me/tag/nt/. We're debuting a new series called "Greatest Greatest Hits," which looks at an artist or group's top songs. But this one could also have fit in "Better Than The Beatles," because Quebec's Michel Pagliaro really does sound like John, Paul, or George in several of these songs! You could also consider him an early power-pop exponent, but he's pretty much unknown outside of Canada, where his songs still get played on classic oldies stations. He's important to us because his songs crossed over on the Anglophone and Francophone charts, but you'll probably appreciate his music because it's so well-crafted. Travailler!

Send us a textREVENGE Major Content Warning: Plot-related sexual assault is mentioned throughout this episode.  Minor Content Warning: Filmic violence is and will often celebrated throughout Season 15.   Salut! and welcome to TGTPTU's long-awaited SQUIB SEASON (Season 15) and a return to the pod's unpatented temporal pincer movement with the series' first film covered being the most recent release: REVENGE (2017).   Distributed en Francais in France and Quebec as Revenge, the identically English-titled Revenge is Parisian auteur Coralie Fargeat's premier feature film; her second was last year's thrice Oscar-nominated THE SUBSTANCE, a.k.a. in Francophone countries as LA SUBSTANCE.  Fargeat's début film follows a familiar rape-revenge plot to tell a deliciously violence-laden story. Its deviations from predecessors such as I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978) (and presumably its little-watched 2010s redux quadrilogy) are smart, sans salacious depictions of the abuse, and put the emphasis on survival rather than on its title as Italian model and actress Matilda Lutz shows no merci, pardon, no “mercy” upon her assailant, her murderer, or either crime's bystander (a character renamed Jacque this episode for a passing resemblance to the French-Canadian skizzbag of Twin Peaks universe) when she's backed into a figurative corner of a barren desert.   As host Jacque's (“Jack” in American) pick, the film is no faux pas to start the season with. Its style possesses a je ne sais quoi freshness, lensed by regular Adil & Bilall collaborator Robrecht Heyvaert and scored by Caen-native ROB (né Robin Coudert).   Listen this episode as “squibs” is defined; Ken confuses his birds; and Ryan expresses a great liking for the picture's ass shots while Ken and Jack like its shots through the head and Thomas is nonchalant. Also, Ken tries out a few bits for seasonal stickiness; enfant terrible Thomas ends up putting a chapeau on a chapeau by trying out a French accent; and although they've not yet reached their second episode to pair the oldest to-boe-covered with this most recent, the entire seasonal start this episode has a sense of déjà vu.    Bon appétit et au revoir! THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!): Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Episode overview: In this conversation, Verto co-founder and CEO Ola Oyetayo shares the journey of building a cross-border payments platform that tackles the unique challenges African businesses face when making international transactions. Since graduating from Y Combinator in 2019, Verto has established itself as what Oyetayo describes as a profitable and cashflow positive fintech serving multiple African markets. Incidentally, the company recently made headlines after winning the prestigious $1 million Milken-Motsepe Prize in FinTech. He discusses his team's pragmatic approach to addressing payment barriers in emerging markets, why traditional financial institutions have failed to serve these regions effectively, and how technology can disrupt traditional banking networks that have historically excluded certain markets. Andile Masuku engages Oyetayo on the evolution of fintech in Africa, the role of privilege and networks in business success, and the future potential of stablecoins to revolutionise cross-border payments in ways that might prove more transformative for emerging markets than developed ones. Key topics: - Verto's position in the cross-border payments landscape - The strategic decision to focus on B2B rather than consumer payments - The untapped $286 billion trade flow between Africa and China - Why 96-97% of business cross-border payments still go through traditional banks - The innovator's dilemma Verto faces with the rise of stablecoins Notable points: 1. In 2018, Oyetayo launched Verto's business model alongside his co-founder Anthony Oduu after spotting a solutions gap for African businesses making international payments outside of traditional banks 2. Verto has been profitable and cash flow positive for approximately 18 months 3. How a chance meeting with legendary VC Vinod Khosla at YC in 2019 first turned him on to the stablecoin investment opportunity—years before they became mainstream 4. The company operates in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and the Francophone region 5. Despite previous experience in institutional finance, Oyetayo admits "ignorance is bliss" helped him tackle a problem others saw as too risky 6. The potential of stablecoins to solve liquidity, volatility and capital control challenges in emerging markets Listen out for Oyetayo's take on Paystack's B2C play Zap, the fintech ecosystem implications of Moniepoint's "unicornification," and his contrarian insight that stablecoins will revolutionise emerging markets while having minimal impact in developed economies: "This is not a popular opinion... There's just no case for stablecoins in developed markets. People talk about, oh, it's going to disrupt Visa and MasterCard... I don't see that coming anytime soon." Image credit: Verto

So argues our guest musicologist Rebecca Geoffroy-Schwinden, associate professor at the University of North Texas and former NEH-Hagley postdoctoral fellow. In this episode, Dr. Geoffroy-Schwinden discusses her latest book project about amateur music making in the Francophone world during the Age of Revolution. Her particular focus is on the meaning of music in the private lives of women around the Atlantic world, women like those in the du Pont family. When Geoffroy-Schwinden delved into the archive she was stunned and delighted to find music everywhere, hidden in plain sight. In support of her work Geoffroy-Schwinden received funding from the Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society at the Hagley Museum and Library. Professor Charles Forsdick tells the story of Toussaint Louverture, who led Haiti's successful and highly adaptive slave revolt against the 18th century's great powers.   Toussaint Loverture was a force of nature. A former slave, he led the revolt in Saint Domingue between 1791– 1802 that resulted in Haitian independence. As a self-taught military commander, he was ever present in the fight, adapting his tactics, employing psychological warfare techniques and harnessing the island's tropical diseases to degrade the French occupying forces. A man of contradictions, he was variously a Spanish monarchist and a French republican who played the great powers of Britain, France, Spain and the United States to secure the space and resources for his revolution to succeed.   Despite leading one of the only successful slave revolts in history, he was less successful as a ruler, where the traits that made him such a great military leader, isolated him from his people. Internal divisions within the revolutionary army led to his capture by Napoleon's forces and death in captivity in France a few months before Haiti achieved full independence in 1803. For this reason, the Haitian's know him as ‘the Precursor' and reserve the title, ‘Liberator', for one of his lieutenants, Dessalines.   Professor Charles Forsdick is the Drapers Chair of French at the University of Cambridge. He writes extensively about post-colonial memory in Francophone countries, and is the co-author of Toussaint Louverture, A Black Jacobin in the Age of Revolution, with Christian Høgsbjerg published by Pluto Press in 2017.

Timothée Paton is an evangelist passionate about reaching France with the Gospel. On today's episode of the Evangelism Podcast, we discusses the current spiritual state of France, noting that while churches have grown in size, the presentation of the gospel message has often been lacking. Timothée shares his vision to bring the clear, simple gospel presentation back to the forefront of church services. Timothée also talks about using short gospel stories and radio spots to effectively communicate the good news. He challenges believers to leave their comfort zones and take the gospel to the "deep end" - the unreached areas of France and the Francophone world. He expresses optimism about the opportunities to reach the French, particularly through the influx of believers from Africa, and calls for more missionaries to minister in the rural, traditionally Catholic regions of the country.
