Public health experts are reiterating that urgent action is needed if New Zealand is to avoid a measles epidemic. Falling immunisation rates, immunity gaps, and an increasing risk of imported cases are all a big risk. Epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker says Aotearoa could see thousands of measles cases, hospitalisations, chronic illness, and potentially deaths. Baker spoke to Corin Dann.

In late September 2019, the first cases of what became Samoa's measles epidemic were first identified. By the end of the year, more than 80 people - mostly infants and babies- would die from the disease while nearly 6000 people were infected. It impacted not only people on the ground in Samoa but, also members of Australia's diaspora community.

Contact tracing failed and the vaccination programme was too slow to stop last year's measles epidemic ripping through South Auckland, a new review has found. More than 2,000 people caught the disease, and 750 were hospitalised, mostly in south Auckland. New Zealand mostly likely spread the disease to Samoa where it became deadly. The Ministry of Health says it wants to learn lessons from the review to help it deal better with the coronavirus. Health correspondent Rowan Quinn reports.

Thousands of Samoans have contracted the measles virus since the first cases started to show up back in October, more than 70 have died, most of them children.
