If you're just about to pop a Panadol tablet - you may want to pause first. New research by Auckland University shows many of us are taking too much paracetamol. It found a third of us commonly take more than the recommended dose of two painkiller tablets at once. Meanwhile 11 percent of us commonly exceed the daily limit of eight tablets a day. Often people experience sneezing and congestion and are unclear of the difference between a cold and hay fever - very common in spring. What is the difference? This time of the year can be confusing especially with a late carry over of winter illnesses. Basically, hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen, dust or pets. The common cold is an infection caused by a virus most often: rhinovirus. Hay-fever comes on suddenly, lasts for days to weeks, often frequent sneezing, and red itchy watery eyes, itchy throat, nose. No temperature. Common Cold: Comes on gradually over days, last 5 to 10 days, thick yellow nose discharge, mild eye irritation, less sneezing, often temperature and muscle ache. How should you tell the difference? If itch eyes and nose think hay fever. If you feel achy and unwell more likely a cold. Hay fever does tend to occur at certain times of the year – especially spring, or lawn mowing. With a cold often have ben in contact with someone who is sick How do you treat them? Hay fever : It is important to try and avoid irritants : keep windows closed especially on windy days, shower after being outside. We use anti-histamines (stops itch, sneezing), often eye drops(stops watery eyes) and nasal spray(stops nasal congestion). Common Cold: Antibiotics do not help – it's a virus. Stay at home - don't spread. Paracetamol or ibuprofen for aches and temperature. Nasal spray decongestants for nose Throat lozenges for sore throat. Usually, will improve over a week. Hope and OpportunityBa mhaith liom mo chomhghairdeas a ghabháil le Catherine Connolly agus a foireann. Maith sibh as feachtas Uachtaránachta dearfach, forásach agus trócaireach a chur chun cinn.I want to extend my congratulations to Catherine Connolly and her team. Well done for fighting a positive, progressive, compassionate and cohesive Presidential campaign. Well done also to the many Sinn Féin activists from all parts of the island and all the others who enthusiastically handed out leaflets, erected posters, canvassed thousands of doors and worked hard to get the vote out last Friday.Lots of words have been used to described the outcome. Stunning. Triumph. Historic. And many more. For me the two most important are hope and opportunity.Catherine Connolly was an exceptional candidate. The success of her campaign cannot be separated from her authenticity and her connectiveness with the electorate and with those, many of them first timers, who campaigned for her. That campaign and the emergence of a centre left alliance of parties backing Catherine has provided hope that the century long dominance of the two conservative parties, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, can be ended. The Vinyl GiftI love listening to music. There is nothing as uplifting as a good live session. And the music stays in your head forever after, to be dipped into when the need or notion moves you. For example, Martin Hayes magical concert last week in Belfast's Grand Opera House. Its still jigging in my brain. Martin was well served by guitarist Conal O'Kane and bouzouki and concertina driver Brian Donnellan. They were joined for the encore sets by Donál O'Connor and Neil Martin, two of my favourite musicans, who opened the event along with singer Mary Dillon who was outstanding. All in all a wonderful evening. Martin Hayes playing was amazing, elegent, draoíluíleacht, exquisive, sublime and betwitching. He transported us to a higher state of being. And all of us are the better for it. But it isn't possible to get to live events all the time. So apart from the radio I have a fine collection of recorded music. They include cassette tapes, CDs and LPs. Some are over fifty years old.Seamus Drumm gave me an ipod of over a thousand tunes years ago. I'm still working my way through them. There is an in-depth episode on the Safety of Tylenol (Acetaminophen) and Other OTC Medications During Pregnancy. Acetaminophen is an over-the-counter analgesic for pain relief and an antipyretic, which reduces fever. Acetaminophen is also known by the brand names Tylenol, Paracetamol, and Panadol. That episode covers the recently raised concerns about prenatal acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental disorders like autism spectrum disorder. If you haven't listened to that one yet, it provides important background on how this controversy started and what the evidence says. After that episode aired, I received numerous emails from listeners who had additional questions. A few weeks ago, U.S. president Donald Trump made a startling announcement: he said using the common painkiller paracetamol, or acetaminophen, known as Tylenol in the U.S. during pregnancy, could cause autism in the baby. This announcement came after earlier this year, the U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known vaccine sceptic, announced a massive testing and research effort to identify the “environmental toxins” that he said were behind the growing “epidemic” of autism in the U.S. It is true that more cases of autism are being reported now than in previous decades, and this is the case in several countries including India. But is autism actually caused by Paracetamol use? Why are cases on the rise? And how much do we actually know about genetic and environmental factors that contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders? Guest: Dr. Ennapadam S. Krishnamoorthy, neuropsychiatrist and founder, Buddhi Clinic, Chennai. Host: Zubeda Hamid Edited by Jude Francis Weston Learn more about your ad choices. President Donald Trump recently addressed what he described as the “horrible crisis” in autism, and rapid rise in reported cases over the last two decades. Previously, he has suggested a link between some vaccines and autism, and in his latest remarks, he warned pregnant women to avoid taking the painkiller Tylenol, or Paracetamol as it is known in many countries. Scientists around the world have condemned his remarks. They say the rise in reported cases of autism is due to increased understanding and diagnoses, and that there is no evidence to show that autism is caused by painkillers or vaccines. We speak to autistic people and the parents of autistic children to discuss their reactions to President Trump's comments.

This was a fascinating conversation about some medical news (controversy?) currently doing the rounds about pregnant women supplementing with folate and a potential link to gestational diabetes and (in other news...) pregnant women using paracetamol for pain management and a potential link to Autism (according a certain President). I'm sure you know what I'm talking about but before you dive in, let me remind you that two dudes (and Tiff) chatting on a podcast about this stuff on no level qualifies as medical advice. Interesting though.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The multi award-winning singer songwriter Annie Lennox has been part of the musical landscape for almost 50 years, from her days in The Tourists, to the Eurythmics and then going solo. Now at the age of 70, Annie has brought out a book of photographs called Annie Lennox: Retrospective, and talks to Nuala McGovern about her life and career.President Trump has said that pregnant women should avoid paracetamol because of the risks of autism and that US doctors will soon be advised not to prescribe Tylenol, as paracetamol is known in the US, to pregnant women. However he didn't provide any scientific evidence for this. UK health officials have stressed that paracetamol remains the safest painkiller available to pregnant women, and Health Secretary Wes Streeting has told women to ignore Trump's comments. Nuala is joined by Dr Alex Tsompanidis, senior research associate at the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University and the BBC's Health reporter, Jim Reed. It's a year since the death of Alice Webb, the first woman in the UK to die from complications after a liquid Brazilian butt lift, a non-surgical procedure injecting filler into the buttocks. You don't need to have any medical qualifications to carry out the procedure. We talk to Sasha Dean who had terrifying complications after a liquid BBL and to David Sines from the JCCP, which runs a voluntary regulator for practitioners. Are you guilty of ‘phubbing'? Autism New Zealand says it has serious concerns around what it calls "misleading claims" made by Donald Trump and his administration around the link between autism and paracetamol. The US President made the highly-contentious claims in an Oval Office address this morning, announcing the US Food and Drug Administration will be notifying physicians that the use of paracetamol during pregnancy "can be associated with a very increased risk of autism". US correspondent Todd Zwillich spoke to Lisa Owen.
After US President Donald Trump and his Health Secretary RFJ Jnr announced that women shouldn't take Tylenol as it has been linked with increase in children being diagnosed with autism diagnosis, women all of a sudden had a new thing to be worried about. But when you look at the actual science these claims are made on, you'll feel much better, because the studies show that this in't the case.
