You get closer to the tree and notice that a few of the branches are dry and dying, and some of the leaves are not as healthy. You wouldn't get on a ladder and start to chop off branches; you'd want to go down to the trunk and the root system. Human beings are the same— it's imperative to analyze and address the whole system by looking at the roots, soil, and terrain. The 3 roots to address are as follows: Genes Digestion Inflammation Managing Your Genes Andrea talks about the 4 influences on your gene expression: mindset, movement, environment, and food. All of these can influence turning on or off genes and genetic predispositions, so understanding the importance of each of these is important. For example, mindset means your belief system and how you are processing events, life experiences, and your way of looking at the world. Having a growth mindset, for example, will be helpful in supporting you to look for lessons, deeper meaning, and growth opportunities in every situation. Understanding digestion The 2nd main root is digestion, and the circles of influence within digestion are mechanical, chemical, structural, and microbiol. Digestion is really about growth, metabolism, and repair. Here are a few helpful tips Andrea shares that can enhance your digestion: Be sure to chew your food thoroughly. So many of us eat while being distracted, on the run, or in a rush, and we eat our food without fully or properly chewing before swallowing. Over time, this is just one issue that can lead to digestive problems. With digestion and finding the best plan of eating, it's not about being on a diet or what's ‘right,' but more about what's best for your body. The ideal balance is a diet that has fat, fiber, and protein in the correct amounts for each individual body. Stress is one of the culprits that affect both digestion and the immune system. Finding ways to reduce stress will help your overall gut health. Eat the rainbow to keep as much diversity as possible in your diet. Reducing Inflammation The third root is all about inflammation, and the four circles of influence are clear, calm, modulate, and enhance. Aspects of how you're managing stress and your life can affect inflammation, such as having clear boundaries and saying no when you mean it versus being a people pleaser and saying yes even when it's a no. Other ways to reduce inflammation: Be clear about your needs, boundaries, and what works for you. Incorporate mindfulness and calm every day, be it meditation, yoga nidra, a walk in nature, or breathwork. Be mindful of what you're saying to yourself, give yourself enough downtime, and get proper rest. This week's podcast episode features Dr. Barrie Tan – a world renowned expert in the chemical and biochemical world, known for his discovery of the most potent form of Vitamin E, tocotrienol! A little background on Vitamin E: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin (absorbed with dietary fats and stored in fatty tissue and the liver) and is made up of 8 related molecules, collectively grouped together as Vitamin E. The mechanism of Vitamin E acts as an important antioxidant to help protect our cells from free-radical damage. As many forms of Vitamin E exist, our focus today is tocotrienol, and shouldn't be confused with alpha-tocopherol, the most common form of Vitamin E you see on the back of most vitamin bottles. Because tocotrienols are a (fairly) recent scientific discovery, prior studies for Vitamin E supplementation used alpha-tocopherol- which turned out to have some unfortunate downsides for cardiac and cancer research. However, the discovery of pure tocotrienol from annatto plants have continuously made an impact on Vitamin E and antioxidant research. Some health benefits of supplementing with tocotrienol are reduction of fat in the liver as well as overall reduction in inflammatory biomarkers, as well as improvement of bone health, cardiovascular health, insulin sensitivity, brain health, and so much more! Bottom line: the type of Vitamin E you are supplementing with matters! It's nearly impossible to get adequate antioxidant protection from diet alone. Watch our interview here! After being cut out of someone's life recently, it got me thinking about the state of modern relationships and this culture of excommunicating anyone that we don't agree with. In this episode, I share three frameworks for restoring harmony and healing relational wounds. Cancel culture plagues our world with depleting emotions like fear, distrust, and anxiety. It might seem easy to block someone online or in real life, but in reality, when that negative energy gets trapped in the body and manifests itself in other ways. Of course, there are situations where it makes sense to uphold boundaries and protect yourself, but when you simply disagree with someone, there are alternative solutions to canceling them. I've witnessed the power of forgiveness first hand, and I share two ways that I practice forgiveness for myself and others. I also try to incorporate transparent, authentic, and open communication skills into everyday life and stay grounded in Don Miguel Ruiz's teachings about The Four Agreements. Unless you've been living off-grid for the last few months, chances are you've heard of Ozempic (or semaglutide)– the newest FDA approved miracle injection for weight loss. Social media has ignited feeds across the world with weight loss transformation posts from semaglutide injections- and 812 million views on TikTok to be exact. Tailored to diabetes, this drug works by stimulating insulin secretion and therefore lowering fasting and postprandial glucose levels in four mechanisms. During the Ozempic drug trials, it was noted that weight loss was such a consistent and dramatic side effect that the FDA approved semaglutide for weight loss under the brand name Wegovy in 2021. In this episode, I discuss: The four mechanisms of Ozempic Changes in insulin sensitivity Increased energy expenditure by encouraging stored fat to turn into energy. Slows gastric emptying The impact on appetite. And what current research is finding. (Hint: It might not be a long-term weight loss miracle!) I've shared many alternative healing modalities on the show, but one that I've been diving deeper into lately is biofeedback and energy scanning, particularly the Spooky2 system.
