Special children deserve special parents. Raising children always takes a huge amount of love and patience, but for some parents, it requires even more - due to additional physical, mental and emotional challenges their children face. Parents of special needs children play a unique role in the effort to give their children the best life possible, and we brought in a dear friend of our family business, Tony Villasuso, to share how his family has handled caring for a child with special needs. Antonio Villasuso is the Miami Centers Director of the Miami Rescue Mission, an organization dedicated to caring for the homeless men, women, and children of South Florida. He and his wife Debbie are parents to Joshua, their teenage son, who is on the autism spectrum and was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at an early age. Throughout Joshua's life, Tony and Debbie have worked tirelessly to provide the best educational, medical, social and spiritual environments that would allow their son to thrive. In this episode, you'll learn how parents of children with special needs process the daily decisions they face, and how you too can grow in your understanding of the dedication that parenting requires. Lian is.........glad she is helping save us humans. First joining the faith-based Rescue Mission back in 2012, originally thinking it was an animal shelter, she has since become an indispensable part of the organization helping more than 15,000 people in need each year. Born in Cuba, she moved to the US at age 15 with her family, attending FIU for a degree in education, and eventually joining the mission as an assistant, moving to volunteer coordinator, and eventually senior community development associate. As bubbly and joyful as can be, Lian has excelled at raising awareness for the organization's mission, helping both fundraise and attract volunteers with a mix of top shelf responsiveness and flexibility. Now spread over across Miami-Dade and Broward with several locations, the Miami Rescue Mission is soon to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, and is showing no signs of slowing its growth, as a pillar in the community. Check out one of their radio shows, Saturdays and Sundays at 8am, and consider becoming a much appreciated Meals a Month donor, helping feed and advance the less fortunate, with just a few dollars out of your paycheck each month. You won't regret it >> https://www.caringplace.org/meals-a-month.php

(Note: Due to technical difficulties, only the last half of the show was captured, though the Baiser ladies keep things real, insightful and fun until the end.)From frequenting pawn shops to make ends meet, stressing to the point of imagining one’s own early death and taking a chance on an out-of-budget PR agency — Erika Arguello and Maria Copello remind us that, despite the dread and anxiety that come with going after what you want, it’s important to have fun, to work with others to bring out our best ideas (and selves) and to approach things with a mix of spirituality, authenticity and humor.Erika and Maria founded Baiser Beauty in 2014 with a vision of living more conscious lives. Using the natural beauty around us to enhance the natural beauty within us, their products utilize organic, plant-based, aromatherapeutic-grade ingredients, old family recipes, and the spiritual, physical and healing principles of Mayan Medicine for a more holistic approach to skincare and cosmetics.Community-minded, they also conduct natural beauty workshops for the women of Lotus House among other non-profits and donate 10% of their sales to a number of organizations such as Miami Rescue Mission, Pridelines Community Center and the National Voices for Equality.Baiser Beauty has been featured in publications such as such as Nylon Magazine, Paper Magazine and Hello Giggles and are stocked at Urban Outfitters as well as internationally.
In segment 1, Ashley speaks with Dr. Janet Angel, Biochemist and Nutritional Expert, about gluten and the difference between gluten allergies and intolerance and if the latest trend to give up gluten to lose weight really works. In segment 2, Gayle speaks with Marilyn Brummet, Development Director for Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach, about the Pack the Pantry Food Drive, and how you can help provide over 250,000 meals to the homeless and hungry this Fall. They also offer youth services, after school programs, education classes and job training to those living in the shelter. And could always use volunteers and donations.
This episode is about self destruction. Jahn Dope, one of the students in our class, reads his story, Dark Matter. Jahn's story begins after he overdoses on LSD after a crazy night of drinking and drugs, then backtracks to childhood. After Jahn's story ends, the class was left with questions. So, producers Diego and Misha met Jahn at work to get the whole story. Listeners will hear why Jahn dropped out of college and what happened next.Jahn tells us how he got deeper and deeper into drugs and eventually ended up homeless. For ten years, Jahn lived on the streets of Miami doing whatever it took to stay alive. When Andrea Askowitz, co-host and teacher of our class, met Jahn Dope, he was living at the Miami Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter in downtown Miami. Andrea taught writing classes at the mission every Friday for two years. Jahn did not miss a class. A year and a half ago, when Writing Class Radio started, Jahn joined our class. This is where Jahn first told this story. Recently, Jahn left the Miami Rescue Mission after working and living there for three years. Because of his affiliation with the Rescue Mission, we allowed him to use a pseudonym. Now, he is proud to use his real name: Philip Sylverin. Phil told us that writing class was one of the main things that saved his life. In class, when Jahn wrote about the shitty things he's had to overcome, it seemed like writing them down and sharing them with the class helped him move past Jahn Dope and on to a thriving, healthy, Phil Sylverin. Everyone who comes to class is working through something. Are you working through something in your life? If so, we want you to share your story with us.Writing Class Radio is a podcast where you'll hear true personal stories and learn a little about how to write your own stories. Writing Class Radio is equal parts heart and art. By heart we mean the truth in a story. By art we mean the craft of writing. No matter what's going on in our lives, writing class is where we tell the truth. It's where we work out our shit, and figure out who we are. There's no place in the world like writing class and we want to bring you in.Writing Class Radio is co-hosted by Allison Langer (www.allisonlanger.com) and Andrea Askowitz (www.andreaaskowitz.com). Writing Class Radio is produced by Misha Mehrel, Diego Saldana-Rojas, Andrea Askowitz and Allison Langer.
