Joining me in the deep end is US Navy veteran Mike Slagh — founder of Shift — an organization that has built the most significant bridge between the Department of Defense and the startup ecosystem.Defense Tech is a big deal. We're just now starting to see it be thought of as a more feasible sector to build startups. Mike might be one of the best people in the world to learn about opportunities to build tech and services that support America and our allies. Before co-founding Shift, Mike felt a calling to serve and joined the United States Naval Academy and was a bomb disposal officer for half a decade.Mike's first experiences with business go all the way back to when he was a kid helping his grandma Betty run her toy store. As a teenager he became an eBay power seller to generate an additional income stream for their business. In just under 10 days Mike is hosting the Defense Venture Summit, convening founders, operators, over 100 VC funds, and members of the US Military. It's likely sold out as of publication. But if you are interested feel free to DM Mike on Twitter to see if you can be included. In this episode, Mike and I discuss opportunities in defense tech, a history of the sector, what he's learned building a premier talent org, hiring veterans, and much more. Are you exploring starting a company we've got a program for that.ODF has helped 1k companies get started and go on to raise over $2B.I'm actually recording this podcast intro at our partner Carta's office as they are hosting us during the 19th cohort of ODF happening right now. The energy is incredible — I'm excited to see what this cohort builds. We've just started reviewing applications for our 20th cohort taking place in San Francisco in late January. This episodes dives into Mike Slagh's launch and iterations through Shift.org, a company that helps military members transition into the civilian workforce. Career transitions will likely happen to nearly everyone in the labor force today. Companies that help facilitate the transition will be in demand. Both because employers need to hire more workers and because these companies will help reduce economic dislocation. Mike covers the early product prototype he built to connect companies and military members. He touches on identifying the right customer profile and selling to the Department of Defense.

Imagine this. You've been working your way up inside an organization for 20 years. Your kids go to school on the company campus. Your spouse works on campus. You go shopping, get gas, grab coffee, walk your dog, and essentially live, work, and play all on campus. And then, imagine, 2 decades in, leaving behind that “campus,” your career, and the entire community you are familiar with. That's the shocking reality thousands of military families face every year. And while transitioning back into the civilian world can be an exciting time, the stress of finding a new career path is almost unavoidable.“Traditional sourcing tools were fundamentally not designed for non-traditional talent. They make non-traditional talent invisible. They make people with non-traditional backgrounds confusing to understand because you have to piece together their story.”That's Mike Slagh, a Navy veteran and founder and CEO of Shfit.org.Mike's all too familiar with the hardships that come with transitioning from military to civilian life... he's both done it himself and helped hundreds of others find their footing through the process. And it's because he's seen it first hand so many times that he knows that that process is long past due for an upgrade.--Learn more about The Journey at mission.org/thejourney.The Journey is sponsored by our friends at Salesforce Essentials. More than 25 million Americans were laid off in April and that’s just the official count. Economists are estimating that unemployment could soon exceed 30% and have massive sectoral impact - service and retail to engineering and product management. Traditional tools - job boards, LinkedIn, etc. are going to be challenged at handling the volume we will be seeing over the next few years - this is where vertical labor marketplaces come in. This week I was thrilled to chat with Mike Slagh, Founder and CEO of Shift. Shift is a digital talent marketplace and community that connects veterans with world class companies. Shift aims to map military backgrounds to specific hiring needs while helping veterans acquire new skills, secure referrals and master corporate hiring processes. Shift extends full stack from education and re-skilling to mentorship and coaching.

When Mike Slagh separated from the service, he had to find a job in areas he didn’t have experience. This was a common problem among veterans moving out of the military and into civilian life. So Mike started Shift, a hiring pipeline for vets that offers career advice, fellowship opportunities and more. --- Find Your Mission is presented by WeWork in partnership with Dell Small Business.  To learn more about WeWork and the Veterans in Residence program, visit we.co/veterans.

Mike Slagh is the Founder of Shift.org, a hiring pipeline for military veterans. Back in the military, Mike was a bomb technician and since finishing his service a little over a year ago, he started Shift.org to create new pathways for veterans into various industries that didn't exist before. There will be about a million new veterans in the next five years, which means there are 20,000 military service members leaving every month. Mike’s greater purpose is to help bridge that gap between the military and the civilian world through skills translation and leveraging the power of personal connections.
