They discuss the defense ecosystem, recap last month's Defense Venture Summit, and articulate the respective roles played by veterans, founders, technologists, civilians, venture capitalists, and policymakers when it comes to addressing defense challenges.

Joining me in the deep end is US Navy veteran Mike Slagh — founder of Shift — an organization that has built the most significant bridge between the Department of Defense and the startup ecosystem.Defense Tech is a big deal. We're just now starting to see it be thought of as a more feasible sector to build startups. Mike might be one of the best people in the world to learn about opportunities to build tech and services that support America and our allies.Before co-founding Shift, Mike felt a calling to serve and joined the United States Naval Academy and was a bomb disposal officer for half a decade.Mike's first experiences with business go all the way back to when he was a kid helping his grandma Betty run her toy store. This episodes dives into Mike Slagh's launch and iterations through Shift.org, a company that helps military members transition into the civilian workforce. Career transitions will likely happen to nearly everyone in the labor force today. Companies that help facilitate the transition will be in demand. More than 25 million Americans were laid off in April and that’s just the official count. After a stellar pitch on our show back in 2017 — one that got $100K in the first five minutes — founder Mike Slagh hit the ground running with his startup, Shift. In this episode, we catch up with him to find out if Shift, a job-placement service for military vets, has continued to dazzle investors. Mike Slagh is the Founder of Shift.org, a hiring pipeline for military veterans. Back in the military, Mike was a bomb technician and since finishing his service a little over a year ago, he started Shift.org to create new pathways for veterans into various industries that didn't exist before. There will be about a million new veterans in the next five years, which means there are 20,000 military service members leaving every month. Mike’s greater purpose is to help bridge that gap between the military and the civilian world through skills translation and leveraging the power of personal connections.

We interview three Naval Officers and friends who have transitioned out of the military, pursued graduate degrees, and become successful vetrepreneurs within the tech industry. Two of them, Mike Slagh and Steve Weiner, founded VetTechTrek, which has connected veterans with careers at companies including Google and Facebook.
