Austen Alexander, a US Navy veteran and fitness enthusiast, shares his journey from joining the Navy to becoming a content creator. He discovered his love for fitness at 19 and used it as a way to build discipline and transform his body. After dropping out of college, he joined the Navy and went through intense training to become a diver. However, he didn't pass the swim qualification and ended up in the Naval Security program. He was stationed in Bahrain and later moved to California, where he deployed on the Carl Vinson and worked in the Harbor patrol. During his time in the Navy, he started making videos to document his training and share his experiences. Austen's interest in video production started in high school, where he produced class videos and a show called Current Events. He continued making videos while in the Navy and started posting them on YouTube. His channel gained traction when a video went viral, earning him significant income. Austen decided to take YouTube full-time and built his own obstacle course called Battle Bunker. He faced challenges and financial struggles but persevered. He later expanded Battle Bunker to the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. The Battle Bunker bus, a 1986 Dodge Ram, became a popular symbol of his brand. In this episode, we hear from Jared Lenahan, a US Navy Veteran. He was a combat medic for the Marine Corps known as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman. After an accident overseas in 2016, he found himself going from climber to paraclimber.   He used adaptive climbing as an integral part of his recovery and has competed as a US Paraclimbing Team Athlete for four years. Jared is also an ambassador for both the National Ability Center and Move United (a Warfighter ambassador for MU). Because the outdoor adaptive community has been so critical to his personal recovery, he started a program to help other wounded warriors get reintegrated into community through adaptive climbing.   This program called “Climbable” introduces warriors to the adaptive sports community before they lose their military community and shows them a streamlined path to transition from recovery to the rest of their lives.   In this interview, Jared and I talk about disability identity, imposter syndrome, addiction, and how climbing as a through-line in his life has guided his life decisions — especially the decision to start Climbable. We recorded this conversation in early 2024 with Jared hoping to officially launch the program by the summer of 2024.

Mann's impressive military biography includes being a decorated combat veteran; Corpsman; SEAL Special Operations Technician; jungle survival, desert survival, and arctic survival instructor; small arms weapons instructor, foreign weapons instructor, armed and unarmed defense tactics, advanced hand-to-hand combat instructor; and Survival, Evade, Resistance and Escape Instructor; in addition to other credentials. Mann is the author of 22 books including the New York Times Best Selling autobiography Inside SEAL Team SIX: My Life and Missions with America's Elite Warriors. When Osama bin Laden was assassinated, the entire world was fascinated by the men who had completed the seemingly impossible mission that had dogged the U.S. government for over a decade. SEAL Team SIX became synonymous with heroism, duty, and justice. Only a handful of the elite men who make up the SEALs, the U.S. Navy's best and bravest, survive the legendary and grueling selection process that leads to SEAL Team SIX, a group so classified it technically does not even exist. There are no better warriors on earth. Mann knows what it takes to be a brother of these ultra-selective fraternities. As a member of SEAL Team SIX he worked in countless covert operations, operating from land, sea, and air, and facing shootings, decapitations, and stabbings. He was captured by the enemy and lived to tell the tale, and he participated in highly classified missions all over the globe, including Somalia, Panama, El Salvador, Colombia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. As a training coordinator for several civilian SEAL training programs, and as a former Training Officer of SEAL Team SIX, he was directly responsible for shaping the bodies and minds of SEALs who carried out the assassination of Osama bin Laden as well as many other classified missions. But to become a SEAL, Mann had to overcome his own troubled childhood and push his body to its breaking point–and beyond. At the podium and in Inside SEAL Team SIX, he shares a high-octane narrative of physical and mental toughness, giving unprecedented insight to the inner workings of the training and secret missions of the world's most respected and feared combat unit. Don Mann has over 40 years (1,000+ races) worth of competitive racing experience, completed 2 Ironman triathlons in a day and was once ranked 38th in the world as a triathlete. Mann received a Master's in Management from Troy State University, in Troy, AL, a B.S. in International Relations & Criminal Justice, from Florida State University, in Tallahassee, FL, and a B.S. in Liberal Science, from State University of New York. He lives in Cape Charles, VA.

How does the heart of a retired judge continue to impact the legal profession through alternative means? In this thought-provoking episode of The Heart of Law, join our perceptive host, Mirena Umizaj, as she welcomes the Honorable Judge Randa Trapp to explore her inspiring transition from the San Diego Superior Court to her new role as a neutral with Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services (JAMS). Together, they discuss the importance of diversity in the legal sector and the transformative power of victim narratives in forging a more personalized path toward justice and healing. From the disciplined decks of the U.S. Navy to the esteemed bench of the San Diego County Superior Court, Judge Randa Trapp's career epitomizes a journey of resilience, dedication, and unparalleled service. As an alumna of San Jose State University and a respected veteran of the U.S. Navy, her formative experiences laid a robust foundation for her illustrious legal career. This relentless dedication propelled her into a prestigious role as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law, where she spent nearly two decades mentoring the future generation of legal professionals. Subsequently, her appointment to the San Diego County Superior Court by Governor Gray Davis in 2003 marked a significant milestone in her career, as she became the third-ever African American female judge to grace the bench of the third-largest court in the United States. Following her retirement in March 2021, Judge Randa Trapp continues to influence the legal landscape through her work with JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide. As the episode unfolds, Judge Randa Trapp takes a moment to reflect on her circuitous professional journey, emphasizing that her path to the legal sector was anything but linear. Starting her adult life in the tumultuous sixties without professional role models to guide her, she embarked on her undergraduate studies with aspirations of becoming a pharmacist. However, her career trajectory underwent a significant transformation when she paused her academic pursuits to serve in the Navy, an experience she acknowledges as pivotal in shaping her personal development and igniting her passion to effect positive change in the world. Motivated by this newfound purpose, she transitioned to studying political science and eventually made her way to Georgetown University Law Center. Embracing her journey's unique twists and turns, she often shares her story to inspire young individuals contemplating a future in law, emphasizing the importance of keeping an open mind because "the law is multifaceted." As the conversation deepens, Mirena probes into Judge Randa Trapp's tenure as a judge, leading her to reflect on this period as a defining highlight of her career. She fondly recalls the tradition of starting every jury trial with a flag ceremony to instill reverence and set the tone for the justice process that lay ahead. Shifting the discussion toward diversity within the legal sector, Mirena explores Judge Randa Trapp's commitment to promoting inclusivity within African American and broader minority communities. Judge Randa Trapp elaborates on her active engagement in these communities, emphasizing its significance in enabling young children of color to envision themselves in similar roles of influence, thereby nurturing their aspirations and dreams. Furthermore, she underscores the importance of establishing a judiciary diverse in gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity to represent the community the court intends to serve authentically. As their conversation draws to a close, Mirena delves into Judge Randa Trapp's seamless transition to JAMS, where her unwavering commitment to justice takes on a new form in the complex field of mass torts. Through her role, she offers a unique platform for victims to share their stories, often for the first time, facilitating a healing process that transcends monetary compensation. Building on this foundation, Judge Randa Trapp further highlights the essential role of mass torts in securing justice for a multitude of aggrieved individuals. She emphasizes that it takes a "special kind of lawyer" to navigate this complex area, underscoring the importance of assembling the right team to ensure that each case receives the attention and advocacy it rightfully deserves. In this vein, Judge Randa Trapp's unwavering dedication to meaningful impact, underscores a deep commitment to justice and healing, cementing her as an indispensable figure in the legal community and the individuals she serves.
