Brian interviews Shoaib Rahim. Shoaib is the former Mayor of Kabul. He talks about his column “Donald Trump's playbook on Ukraine is the same one he used to withdraw from Afghanistan”. This is a thought provoking conversation about the parallels between Afghanistan withdrawal giving the Taliban everything and Ukraine. “Once Ukraine's primary supporter, the U.S. under Donald Trump has performed an astonishing volte-face, not just engaging Vladimir Putin in talks but embracing Kremlin talking points about the war... In his first term, Mr. Trump grew frustrated with the lack of quick progress in Afghanistan and initiated secret negotiations with the Taliban. The result was the 2020 agreement signed in Doha, Qatar, which granted the Taliban nearly everything they wanted in exchange for little more than a promise not to target America's withdrawing forces. That deal completely undercut the government of Afghanistan, sidelined NATO and set the stage for the chaotic collapse of Kabul in 2021.”

Guest: Raheem Madjavi, President of Knightsbridge Foreign Exchange Topic: Currency Exchange, Interest Rates, and Economic Trends Key Points Discussed: 1. Knightsbridge FX Overview o Knightsbridge FX specializes in currency exchange services, offering better rates than banks for buying/selling US dollars. o It's often cheaper than using traditional banks, but users should shop around. 2. Factors Influencing the Canadian Dollar (CAD) o The CAD's strength depends on the relative performance of the Canadian and US economies. o A stronger US economy draws investment, strengthening the US dollar. o Recent trends: Canada is cutting interest rates faster than the US, driving funds into the US. Economic uncertainty, such as potential tariffs, creates a risk premium that weakens the CAD. 3. Inflation and Interest Rates o Lower inflation in Canada allows for more rate cuts to stimulate the economy. o The US economy remains robust, leading to fewer rate cuts. o Rate cuts in Canada could continue, potentially weakening the CAD further in the short term. 4. Tariff Concerns and Economic Risks o Tariffs could severely impact the Canadian economy, pushing the CAD down further. o If implemented, the CAD could weaken to 1.50 against the USD. 5. Long-Term Outlook for CAD o Currency fluctuations are cyclical and often tied to resource prices like oil. o In the next 1–3 years, Canada's economic prospects may improve, stabilizing the CAD. 6. Investment Advice on Currency Timing o Avoid trying to time the currency market; it's unpredictable due to global events (e.g., wars, political changes). o Instead, focus on the fundamentals of your business or investments. o If an investment makes sense financially, proceed without overanalyzing currency trends. 7. Practical Tips for Investors o Buy currency only when needed rather than speculating on future rates. o Accept that currency markets are volatile and plan investments to account for fluctuations. 8. Closing Thoughts o Stability in currency rates is desirable for investors and businesses. o Successful investments should generate returns that outweigh short-term currency fluctuations. o Focus on long-term goals rather than being distracted by market timing. This episode highlights the importance of understanding macroeconomic factors while emphasizing pragmatic strategies for investors dealing with cross-border transactions.

Shelley shares how her early experiences of giving birth at a young age led her to discover the benefits of yoga for birth preparation. She describes her prenatal yoga training at Kripalu in 2005 and how it sparked her passion for understanding trauma in birth work. Shelley emphasizes the importance of creating empowering and trauma-informed classes, where every word and guidance can impact the birthing person. Shelley notes that 65% of her clients come from her prenatal yoga classes, with the rest from referrals and online consultations. She explains how her deep understanding of the childbearing year continuum has been built through hands-on experience and training, allowing her to provide comprehensive support from pregnancy to postpartum. Populism, MAGA, and Trump: Insights from Media and the Campaign Trail
Send us a textThis episode is devoted to a truly unique and pretty weird Arabic text, The Book of Charlatans by an obscure early thirteenth-century Arabic scholar, Jamal al-Din 'Abd al-Rahim al-Jawbari, commonly known simply as al-Jawbari. At the behest of a Turkman sultan, al-Jawbari composed an encyclopedic guide to the scams, con games, and trickery practiced in the cities of the medieval Middle East. Al-Jawbari not only catalogues the various scams and trickery but also explains how they were pulled off. The book warns its readers to be vigilant against these scams, but it also reads like a "how to" manual. What makes it such a "good read" are the many anecdotes that al-Jawbari includes based on his own experiences during his travels throughout the Islamic east. My co-host for this episode is Peter Konieczny, the owner of the website medievalists.net, the leading online platform for all things medieval. In an earlier episode, Peter explained to me how and why the Mongols devastated Abbasid Baghdad. Frankly, I had not even heard of The Book of Charlatans until Peter approached me with the idea of doing an episode on it. I am so glad that he did because this really is an interesting work that sheds light on the criminal underbelly of the medieval Islamic world. It is also just fun. Please join us as we talk about the many scams practiced by medieval Muslim--and Christian--con artists in the thirteenth-century Middle East. The Book of Charlatans, translated by Humphrey Davies and edited by Manuela Dengler. With an intuitive interface, seamless integration with digital channels and robust analytics, the right CMS can become the backbone of modern digital publishing; the wrong one can mean disrupted or inefficient workflows, poor content management and missed opportunities for audience engagement. This is the latest in our Media Briefs series of short, sharp sponsored episodes – just 10 to 15 minutes – with a senior executive from a vendor working with publishers to make their businesses better. In this episode we hear from John Rahim, Senior Consultant in Digital Publishing at digital publishing platform provider, Purple.
