GospelMATTHEW 16:13-2313Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare'a Philip'pi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" 14And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli'jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 16Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." 20Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. 21From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you." 23But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men."

The National Eucharistic Revival began on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord/Corpus Christi. This broadcast of Focus on the Liturgy aired just days after this beginning. Cohosts Danielle Noe and Todd Williamson discuss the Revival – particularly the role of the Eucharistic Liturgy and it's relationship to the Revival. The celebration of the Eucharist is, the Church says in its documents, the Source and the Summit of the Christian Life; how then is it the foundation of the Revival and the Missionary Spirit the Revival is meant to renew in the Church?

Today we will look at the beginning of the First Missionary Journey. The two points are: 1) The Spirit Sends- as the church seeks God in prayer and fasting the Spirit leads them and has them send Paul and Barnabas. This missionary leading is huge for displaying God’s purposes and for beginning a pattern for the church. 2) The Spirit Empowers- the Spirit empowers Paul and Barnabas to go, preach the gospel, and defeat Satan’s forces in the form of the magician Elymas. The result is that Sergius Paulus is brought from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.

From the Holy Rule of St. Benedict: St.-Benedict-d PROLOGUE Listen, O my son, to the precepts of thy master, and incline the ear of thy heart, and cheerfully receive and faithfully execute the admonitions of thy loving Father, that by the toil of obedience thou mayest return to Him from whom by the sloth of disobedience thou hast gone away. To thee, therefore, my speech is now directed, who, giving up thine own will, takest up the strong and most excellent arms of obedience, to do battle for Christ the Lord, the true King. Jesus told His disciples that it was good for Him to leave because it meant God would send His Holy Spirit. Without Jesus, the Gospel message needed a force behind it to keep it going. The same Spirit that lived in Jesus and drove Him to do the will of God was poured out on His Church and now lives in us!
