TVC 686.2: Peter Ford, son of screen legends Glenn Ford and Eleanor Powell, helps Ed celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the release of Blackboard Jungle, the iconic film from 1955 that not only starred Glenn Ford as a young English teacher in an inner-city high school, but which prominently featured the song “Rock Around the Clock” in its soundtrack, putting Bill Haley and the Comets on the map while also launching the era of rock 'n' roll music. Peter Ford was just ten years old when Blackboard Jungle was released, yet he played a very prominent role in getting his dad and director Richard Brooks to integrate “Rock Around the Clock” into Blackboard Jungle—indeed, Little Stevie van Zandt once credited Peter as being the catalyst for one of the seminal moments in rock 'n' roll history. Peter Ford is also the author of Glenn Ford: A Life, an intimate look at the life and times of one of our finest screen actors.

CW: This episode contains spoilers and discussions of cinematic sexual violence. The film writer Jessica Ritchey returns to the show for a two-part series about two controversial films about a woman's complex sexuality, films that took a couple of decades to be rediscovered and better understood. In part one we discuss Richard Brooks' 1977 drama Looking for Mr. Goodbar starring Diane Keaton, based on the popular seventies bestseller by Judith Rossner, based on the true story of a New York City schoolteacher who was murdered by a man she picked up at a singles bar. Mr. Goodbar was a major hit for Paramount upon release, but a few weeks later it was overshadowed by another Paramount release with an even bigger cultural impact and hit soundtrack, Saturday Night Fever. Mr. Goodbar has been hard to see properly for decades due to its reputation as a misogynist, depressing film and the extremely expensive licensing costs for its disco soundtrack, until the end of 2024 when Vinegar Syndrome unexpectedly released a limited-edition restoration. Jessica and I dig into the thorny and complex issues this film presents about a woman's sexuality, partly due to Richard Brooks' determination to tell a more empathetic story than the more punishing tone of Rossner's novel (she was angered by the adaptation). Brooks may not have been the ideal person to make this film being two generations removed from the subject but nevertheless his film contains an interesting and useful critique of the patriarchy, using his understanding of New Hollywood techniques. Jessica and I also discuss the film's use of music, Diane Keaton's tremendous performance as Theresa Dunn, the depiction of all the terrible men in her life, and our responses to the shocking conclusion of the film. Part two of this discussion is exclusive to the Patreon feed: more about Mr. Goodbar, contrasted against a controversial 2003 film that could be seen as a feminist response to it, Jane Campion's In the Cut, and a 1982 TV movie about a woman in danger that echoes some of these themes, Hotline starring Lynda Carter. To support this show directly and to receive access to the entire back catalogue, consider becoming a patron for only $5.00 a month (U.S.) at patreon.com/junkfilterFollow Jessica Ritchey on Bluesky, and support her work on Patreon. The limited edition Vinegar Syndrome release of Looking for Mr. Goodbar can be purchased here.“Goodnight Theresa”, a YouTube playlist Jessica and I cooked up of disco songs that came out too late to be included on the Goodbar soundtrack but would have fit right in.Trailer for Looking for Mr. Goodbar (Richard Brooks, 1977)

In this episode of Series Eight, host Andrew Martin meets professional genealogist Richard Holt. He finds out how Richard got hooked on family history, what made him turn professional, has he ever experienced 'imposter syndrome', and his efforts to access original Wills - and challenging a proposal by the UK Government's Ministry of Justice on the disposal of historic Wills. THE LIFE STORY - MATTHEW BUYRN (aka JOHN DUNMORE)  Richard has chosen to tell the life story of his 4x Great Grandfather Matthew Buyrn, who was born in Edmonton, Middlesex, England in 1793. However, throughout the records, another name for Matthew repeatedly emerges - John Dunmore. Why does he have two names? Matthew enlisted in the Royal Marines in 1812 (during the Napoleonic Wars) starting out at the Royal Marines Barracks at Chatham, Kent, before transferring to Plymouth. He then set sail with the Marines but by 1833 he was discharged to hospital due to suffering from what was described at the time as 'mania'. What follows is a series of events that would see him end up in prison, and as a man whose mental health was at a low.   THE BRICK WALL - RICHARD BROOKS  A puzzle in the village of Bledlow Ridge, Buckinghamshire, England has Richard scratching his head... and seeming half the village too.  His ancestor - Richard Books - was born circa 1740, but the location is not yet known. During his life this Richard built a house on common land, married and had lots of children... who in turn had lots of children too, but he was a poor man, with no Will, and no marked grave. Can you identify the birthplace or baptism location of Richard Brooks? If you think that you can help Richard with a research clue or idea, then you can contact him via his website, alternatively you can send us a message via our contact form and we'll pass it along to him.  Meanwhile.... Richard is curious of Andrew's offer of help, but can he get him to the right place? - - -Episode Credits: Andrew Martin - Host and Producer Richard Holt - Guest  Thank you for listening!

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

History repeats first as tragedy --- radio evangelism and the good, hard business sense of Christianity in the 1920s, but next the farce --- the co-opting of religion for political and financial purposes in the 21st Century. And, in both cases, railing at, to quote a fictional preacher, “Harvardism, Yaleism, and Princetonism.” The shadowy and evil elites, of course. Woops, throw in one more “ism,” Darwinism. It's on repeat play now. And it was all seen clearly in 1926 by a guy named Sinclair Lewis. Who penned a novel that inspired a fantastic and illustrative film, 1960's Elmer Gantry, from United Artists. The novel Gantry was so scandalous that it was, as the phrase goes, “banned in Boston.” It was incredibly popular nonetheless, but almost too hot to handle until the thawing of the Production Code for film in the 50s. At long last came Renaissance man Richard Brooks, to move Gantry forward as a project and into American theaters. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Book Vs. Movie: Cat on a Hot Tin RoofThe 1955 Play Vs. the 1958 Classic FilmThe Margos are feeling very Southern in this episode devoted to the work of Tennessee Williams and his personal favorite work--Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The 1955 play was based on his 1952 short story “Three Plays of a Summer Game” and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama during its Broadway debut. The story of the Pollitt family in the Mississippi Delta and their personal grievances and torturous secrets was considered incredibly raw and racy for the conservative 1950s. The 1955 play was directed by Elia Kazan and starred future Dallas star Barbara Bel Geddes as Maggie “The Cat” Pollitt and Ben Gazzara as Brick Pollitt. Burl Ives (“Big Daddy”) and Madeleine Sherwood (“Sister Woman”) would go on to star in the film adaptation in 1958. Bel Geddes and Kazan were nominated for the Tony Award in the original production, and the themes of homophobia, family bonds, and sexism excited audiences then and to this day. The film was directed and adapted by Richard Brooks during a time known as the “Hays Code,” which meant the homosexual yearnings expressed by Brick Pollitt (played by Paul Newman in the movie) for his recently deceased best friend Skipper had to be downplayed. Also, the character of Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor in an Academy Award-winning performance) is more toned down and “likable” to ensure not to offend movie-goer sensitivities. What are the other differences between the original play and the film? Which version did the Margos like better? Have a listen! In this ep the Margos discuss:Playwright Tennessee Williams and how this particular story evolvedThe censoring of the original work to filmWhy the play endures. The cast of the 1958 film: Elizabeth Taylor (Maggie Pollitt,) Paul Newman (Brick Pollitt,) Burl Ives (“Big Daddy” Pollitt,) Jack Carson (Gooper Pollitt,) Judith Anderson (“Big Momma” Pollitt,) Madeleine Sherwood (“Sister Woman” Pollitt,) Larry Gates (Dr. Baugh) and Vaughn Taylor as Deacon Davis.Clips used:Maggie & Brick talk about SkipperCat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958 trailer)Ben Gazarra and 1955 clip Cat on a Hot Tin RoofBrick and Big Daddy“Mendacity”Music: Charles Wollcott Book Vs. The sixth and finale film in our Stranger Than Fiction cycle is Richard Brooks' true crime magnum opus, In Cold Blood (1967). Often overlooked by the infamy of its origin source, In Cold Blood enormous value as a film: the beautiful and stark cinematography of Conrad Hall (who went on to shoot Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Road to Perdition), the unsettling and rapturous performances of leads Robert Blake and Scott Wilson, the surgical plotting and execution of Richard Brooks. It sits snugly inbetween the post-war studio system and the auteur anarchism of the 1970s. Despite these creative high marks, In Cold Blood could be a thesis statement for this cycle: exploitation and true life film are inseparable. The moral weight of retelling this grisly murder of a family by two drifters is too much for the film, even with its progressive anti-death penalty ideology. But we find interest and discourse in the cracks and fissures of great art. Perfection in film would be a negation of the medium. For our chaser film, we trace the lineage of true crime back to Compulsion (1959), a mess of a film that is salvaged by wonderful performances from Orson Welles, Diane Varsi, Dean Stockwell, and the truly creepy Bradford Dillman.

The question of “Why?” hovers over Alice Diop's new SAINT OMER, as well as the 2016 French crime that inspired it, in the same way it hovers over 1967's IN COLD BLOOD, Richard Brooks' film adaptation of the Truman Capote “non-fiction novel” that helped establish the true crime genre as we understand it today. We bring that understanding of true crime to our discussion of SAINT OMER on its own terms— in particular how its removed observational style intersects with its complex emotional center — as well as in conversation with IN COLD BLOOD's own mythologizing of madness. The new French film SAINT OMER fictionalizes the true story of an inexplicable crime, giving the perpetrator's story a full airing in a way that recalls Truman Capote's formative non-fiction novel IN COLD BLOOD, and by extension director Richard Brooks' near-contemporaneous film of the same name. So this week we're looking back at how IN COLD BLOOD shaped the true-crime genre for better and worse, how Brooks and cinematographer Conrad Hall used expressive yet revealing black-and-white photography to create the cinematic equivalent of the non-fiction novel, and how the film's unusual structure affects the impact of seeing its central crime play out. The new tech-horror movie M3GAN achieved viral status before it even hit theaters, but its subsequent box-office performance suggests there's more to this film's success than just dance memes. Part of it can be chalked up to the degree to which it is a perfect January movie, but there's also its well-balanced combination of self-aware humor, capitalist critique, and parental anxiety, all of which it shares with its most direct cinematic antecedent, 1988's franchise-starter CHILD'S PLAY. After talking out our reactions to M3GAN's use of magic-adjacent “emergent technology” to stoke very real human fears, we draw some connections to CHILD'S PLAY's weaponization of the uncanny valley, skepticism about marketing to children, and understanding of childhood trauma. durée : 01:30:00 - Les Nuits de France Culture - par : Albane Penaranda - Un physique athlétique, d'où provient une voix teintée d'ironie : voilà le regard de critiques sur le jeu et la personnalité du comédien Burt Lancaster, sujet de cette émission des "Mardis du cinéma" de 1991.
