I've heard a lot of "whys" from different authors--why they started writing, wanted to write, began when they did. All the whys.  Listen in and learn why Heidi Gray McGill took her why for her career and reworked it into her new writing career (and why I think she was so successful!).  note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. When I found out Heidi's series, Discerning God's Best, allows readers to watch characters grow up and learn to navigate life with (and without--not recommended) the Lord's direction, I knew why folks love it so much.  We love characters we don't have to say goodbye to and get to see become MORE of who they are supposed to be.  Win/win! Heidi also shares her heart for what she's doing with her stories, why she does what she does, and more! Written on My Heart by Heidi Gray McGill It's hard to hear God's voice when you've already decided what you want him to say. In the wilds of the rugged West, Betsy Smith discovers beauty in every corner—from the blazing sunsets to the wind murmuring secrets through the mountains. Yet, it's the magnetism of Gabe Manning, with his dark complexion and dashing demeanor, that draws her gaze. Having known him since childhood, Betsy sees in Gabe the embodiment of the heroes she admires from her novels: a stalwart protector of the innocent, a champion of justice, a man of unshakable integrity, and a paragon of honor, guided by principles as steadfast as the mountains themselves— all while reconciling with his Arapaho Indian heritage. Yet, amid her admiration, Betsy longs for God's reassurance that Gabe is the one for her. As deputy of Shumard Oak Bend, Missouri, in 1875, Gabe “Little Sun” Manning sees the allure and harshness of frontier life. Amidst the chaos, he finds solace in the presence of Miss Betsy Smith, a compassionate schoolteacher whose independence and intellect captivate him as profoundly as her beauty. Yet, as their bond deepens, Gabe wrestles with doubts about his ability to fulfill the desires of her heart. Haunted by the secrets of his past and desperate for redemption, Gabe faces his most formidable challenge yet. Written on My Heart is a powerful Christian Historical Romance full of resilience, redemption, and the enduring power of the human spirit. In award-winning author Heidi Gray McGill's fifth installment in the Discerning God's Best series, you'll be transported to a world of wild-west adventure and heartwarming romance. For Misty M. Beller, Lacy Williams, and Linda Ford fans, this standalone novel in the Discerning God's Best series will capture your heart and leave you breathless. First off, my apologies to Misty M. Beller for both forgetting to schedule her episode release and THEN getting it pushed back after my husband's accident. She got a double whammy (as did one other author) and she's been amazingly gracious.  But you need to hear about the great new series she started last year and all the cool books coming from both a group of sisters in one era and a group of brothers in another!  Listen in to find out why I'm still planning to read a Christmas collection after Christmas thanks to her! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Are You Ready to Take a Romantic Trip to the Rocky Mountains? I knew when I learned I was going to be talking with Misty M. Beller that I'd have a great time.  I just didn't know that I was going to end up being an exercise in patience and grace for her.  First, something went off with our scheduling thanks to new computer woes and then I forgot to put her episode on the calendar! Once I did, I then had to let it go after my husband's hospitalization, which meant she got a triple blow from me.  Show this woman some love, folks. She's amazing. But we had a great chat both before and after the episode finished recording, but I wanted to highlight the important stuff. TWO new series in 2023 (that will continue into 2024!  You don't want to miss: Sisters of the Rockies:  A series about four sisters who were inspired by Misty's own daughters.  Brothers of Sapphire Ranch: Six brothers with a secret ranch and the mail-order bride who shows up unwanted.  Come on.  This sounds amazing, right? Also... don't forget Christmas Bells and Wedding Vows with Jodi Hedlund and Lacy Williams! Rocky Mountain Promise by Misty M. Beller Lorelei Collins possesses a soft heart for any animal in need, so when she finds a buffalo calf bawling beside its lifeless mother, she can't help but bring it home to raise on the ranch she and her sisters are building in the Rocky Mountain wilderness. Little does she realize that its white coloring is rare and considered sacred by Native Americans, which makes it highly valuable to them and European trappers alike. Men soon begin to visit their ranch to regard the marvel, with some trying to woo Lorelei into marriage and others trying to steal the calf outright. When the men's advances become more sinister, Lorelei approaches Tanner Mason, the quiet and mysterious owner of the new trading post, with an idea: she and the calf will move to his post, along with her family's trusted Blackfoot friend. This will solve both their problems by bringing customers to his trade room and protecting her family from the trouble brought on by so many strangers. Yet as the danger travels with her, Lorelei and Tanner are faced with a threat greater than anything they're prepared for--one that will test the limits of their abilities and the love growing between them. The Sisters of the Rockies series is still 30% off (and preorder of the next at 40% off!!) with free shipping at BakerBookHouse.com. Learn more about Misty and follow her on her WEBSITE. Y'all, I had so much fun connecting with my friends Misty Beller, Gabrielle Meyer, & Roseanna White. They each write historical fiction set in different time periods. Gabrielle Meyer's latest In This Moment is set during the beginnings of the Civil War, WWII, and the days leading up to 9/11. Roseanna White's A Beautiful Disguise is set in 1909 with an acrobatic set of aristocratic investigators — such fun. And Misty Beller's Rocky Mountain Rendezvous is set during the trader's rendezvous in 1837. After marveling at how much these homeschooling mamas who have each written more than 30 books have in common, we quickly turned to their books and how they developed the ideas for them. Idea sparks are a key part of the writing process. Often for the four of us, our best ideas for new books and series come from the research for the next series. And if you listen very carefully, you might just pick up an idea of what's coming next for each of these talented authors. I enjoy each of their books and can't wait for you to meet them! Today I'm bringing you a conversation with USA Today Bestselling author Misty M. Beller. The first installment in her Brides of Laurent Series, A Warrior's Heart, released last August. Misty and I talked about how this series was inspired by a podcast about Viking Shield Maidens as well as why she loves the Rocky Mountains and keeps writing about them. Here's a description of A Warrior's Heart from the publisher, Bethany House: Her heart longs for peace, but peace won't keep them safe. Brielle Durand is still haunted by the massacre that killed her mother a dozen years before. Vowing to never let it happen again, she's risen to be the key defender for her people's peace-loving French settlement living in hidden caves in the Canadian Rockies. When a foreigner wanders too near to their secret home, she has no choice but to disarm and capture him. But now, what to do with this man who insists he can be trusted? Hoping to escape past regrets, Evan MacManus ventured into the unknown, assigned to discover if the northern mountains contain an explosive mineral that might help America win the War of 1812. Despite being taken prisoner, Evan is determined to complete his mission. But when that assignment becomes at odds with his growing appreciation of the villagers and Brielle, does he follow through on his promise to his government or take a risk on where his heart is leading him? Either choice will cause harm to someone. Brielle and Evan must reconcile the warring in their hearts to have any hope of finding peace for their peoples. Popular author of contemporary romantic suspense, Lisa Harris wows her readers with novels of danger, intrigue, and justice.  Or, at least that's what I've found in the ones I've read!  Lisa and I chatted about her US Marshals series and her latest book (just released this month), The Chase. We get more of Madison and Jonas from the first book, and we also learn what's coming up in the series and in her entire book world. Hint: next spring is going to be a doozy! Oh, and she's just another one of those authors who is out to sabotage my productivity. Just sayin'. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. I also want to thank Misty M. Beller, Bethany House Publishing, and the book A Warrior's Heart.   Why Authors Like Lisa Harris Are Destroying My Productivity Goals Someone suggested that authors are trying to keep me too busy to write because of the glut of books in the marketplace.  Someone else suggested that I'm just jealous that she finished other suspense series, and mine is still waiting for me to get my bum over there. Yeah. Not it. They're just doing it because they're so good at what they do.  Both the Lisas (Harris and Phillips) are writing amazing suspense books that I don't want to put down. Other authors are writing historical or fantasy or… and… um… wow. Just sayin'. Wow. Lisa and I chatted about what she's learned while researching the US Marshal Service, what they do and don't do, and she confirmed a suspicion I've long held. Law enforcement agencies are not as territorial as TV and movies make them out to be. Shocker.  Then again, come on. Let's face it. Conflict drives story. Can you blame the screenwriters? It's understandable if not accurate. The U.S. Marshals Series includes The Escape which starts off with a huge twist at the end of chapter one and a hero (Jonas) who got my loyalty the moment he didn't hesitate to give up his vacation to do his job.  WOOT! Now Madison and Jonas know each other from past books, and next spring, Lisa Harris has a novella coming out, Point Blank, that will connect the U.S. Marshals series to her Nikki Boyd books (That series starts with Vendetta!)  So, after you read The Chase and you have to wait for The Catch, you can read the Nikki Boyd series and voila!  Something to keep you waiting for all the new, cool books! Oh, and she's also in this fabulous box set coming out in October! Dangerous Pursuits: 15 Stories From Today's Most Popular Mystery and Suspense Authors This collection is just $0.99 before release and for fifteen books?  Yeah, I preordered mine! When not writing, Lisa Harris loves to read romantic suspense and thrillers, but… she's like a lot of authors. She finds it hard to turn off the inner editor, so she often reads historical fiction instead. I loved when she said not knowing what is accurate makes the reading experience more enjoyable.  I so get that! About The Chase by Lisa Harris (#notPhillips).
