We're back for a chilly good time with Cold Prey 2 (2008), the Norwegian slasher sequel that picks up directly where the last one left off, with shades of Halloween 2 (1981) and Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) serving as inspiration points as Jannicke once again faces The Mountain Man in a mad, slashery jaunt through a spooky hospital. Thankfully, nary a sign of Chris Martin to be had, but that doesn't mean we don't have jokes!
A reclusive “mountain man” in the Montana backcountry lives off the grid with his wolf‑dogs and a stack of trespass complaints, convinced the rutted dirt track to his cabin is his to control. When he disappears and dismembered remains in garbage bags surface along a lonely mountain pass, the bad blood on Turk Road suddenly looks less like a neighbor dispute and more like the start of a chilling question: who decided this feud would end in murder? History is full of revenge stories - but almost none of them spiral into full-blown, years-long war against an entire nation. This week, host Ben Thompson is joined by producer Andrew Jacobs to dive into the blood-soaked legend of Jeremiah “Liver-Eating” Johnson -a mountain man who survived brutal winters, outlaws, and ambushes… and then allegedly spent years hunting down members of the Crow Nation after the murder of his family. It's a story of myth vs. reality, frontier violence, and one man's transformation into something closer to folklore than human. Because when your nickname is Liver-Eating, you're already way past the point of reasonable behavior.
On this episode of the Build Your Success podcast, host Brian Brogen welcomes Rob Sublette Vice President of Mountain Man Welding, a family-owned Denver welding and fabrication company founded in 1992 that transitioned from oil and gas into water infrastructure and has welded much of Colorado's major welded-steel water pipelines over the past 34 years. Rob shares his path from welder helper to project engineer, operations manager, and VP in 2024, and discusses buying out the business as his mom serves as president. He defines leadership as being people-first, accessible, and willing to work alongside crews. Rob outlines opportunities for young people in fabrication, emphasizing starting at the bottom, gaining real field experience, and being patient about pay and progression. He highlights 2026 challenges including tariffs affecting material lead times and the ongoing labor and training gap, and advises newcomers to stay humble, invest in themselves, and avoid job hopping. Today's environmental recording captures the sound of an area within Forest Park that few people gave much thought to, until a headline grabbed their attention 21 years ago.In 2004, a pair of off-trail endurance runners came across a father and daughter living in a dugout shelter in Portland's 5200 acre Forest Park. They had been living there for four years.Upon discovery, police were dispatched for a wellness check. Eventually one officer helped the two resettle on a horse farm where the father, Frank, worked and they attended the local church. They left the farm after about a month, never to be heard from again. Their story inspired Peter Rock's 2009 fictionalized novel My Abandonment, which was adapted into the acclaimed 2018 film Leave No Trace. When first discovered, Frank was 53 and Ruth was 12. Their makeshift home was constructed on the side of a steep hill, not far from where this recording was made. Inside the shelter were encyclopedias, a bible, toys, a doll, sleeping bags. Nearby was a planted vegetable garden and a water catchment structure.“But how could a 53 year old father with a 12 year old daughter survive in this thick, dense forest for four years?” asks a reporter as he bushwhacks down a brushy hillside in a 2004 segment for KATU news. “Well, police say Frank's a smart guy, college-educated. He's also an ex-marine who served two tours in Vietnam.”The reporter concludes, “So why would a father with no job, but a $400 a month disability check, hide in the forest? Those that saw them on their weekly walks out of the woods to church, the library and to buy food say it was a father's fear society might separate him from the one he loves.” Amateur mystery detectives on Reddit wanted to know more. Based on the few details in the 2004 news stories, they placed the father, Frank Trecarten, in articles 20 years prior in 1984, describing a manhunt for a mountain man or “survivalist”, in Quebec and New Hampshire after allegations of desecrating an church altar and attempted arson. Then in 2005, log books for Appalachian Trail hikers signed by “Mountain Man” and “Miss Mountain Dew”—believed to be trail names for Frank and Ruth—were discovered. A photo corroborates the placement with the identifying note: Frank “Trefcarten”. Most recently, in 2013, the name Frank Treecarten reappears in articles outlining a flare gun shooting assault in Concord, New Hampshire, where it appears Frank was charged with two felonies and held on $8,000 bail. The verdict in the case is unknown. These details paint the story in a more acute light, potentially revealing a decades-long pattern of living on the fringes, possibly exacerbated by PTSD.I re-watched Leave No Trace and listened to the My Abandonment audiobook. Although the movie is adapted from the book, they diverge significantly, especially approaching their conclusions. The book is decidedly more tragic, while the movie hits a more optimistic note. The optimist in me wants the film to be closer to the truth. One can't help but wonder about Ruth, who would be in her mid 30's now, and Frank, now in his mid 70‘s. If amateur investigators are to be believed, Ruth is now married and living in Oregon. Another thing that I noticed and appreciated in the film was how sparse the score was. It was barely there. It inspired me to further pare down my own future scores, letting the soundscape “take solos”. Additionally, a lot of films get the wildlife sounds wrong, but this was better than most. Varied Thrush, and Northern Pygmy Owl stood out to my ear. I don't remember hearing Pacific Wren though; a true soundmark of Forest Park. That late May morning I sat in the middle of the Maple Trail above Saltzman Creek. No one passed by. The trail had been closed for some time following bridge damage. Portions of steel decking were broken off and the railing remained squashed from the impact of a fallen tree. While there, I made an oil pastel drawing while soaking up the tranquil setting. I also made a half-hearted attempt to scout around looking some clue of a former habitation; a whisper trail, a depression. Then it occurred to me that I really didn't know precisely where to look. That ridge or this ridge? It seemed pointless, really. Perhaps the reason that this story still looms so large in imaginations is because it makes us confront how estranged we truly are from the old ways: living light in the woods, not too far removed from hunting and gathering. We don't really hear these kind of narratives in the USA anymore. We are aghast to discover that a father and daughter did so, undetected, for four years in a city nature park. It defied expectation. I wonder what this says about us; about the velocity and trajectory of civilization? I don't have any conclusions of my own to offer. All I know is a young person, I spent nights discretely camped at a few dubious spots while cycling across the USA. You definitely sleep lighter. I can't imagine that kind of background anxiety over the long term.My score attempts to hold these two things in tension: the wonder and a the discomfort of living outdoors, close to the land, peering into its wildness. Thanks for listening and reading. We journey out to Montana Territory in the latter half of the 19th century to break biscuits with John "Liver-Eating" Johnson, subject of the books Crow Killer by Raymond W. Thorp and Robert Bunker and Mountain Man by Vardis Fisher, both of which were subsequently adapted by John Milius for the Sydney Pollack film Jeremiah Johnson starring Robert Redford. All three detail Johnson's life as a hunter/trapper and his war with the Crow Indians after the killing of his wife, and while the accounts of foes stomped and scalps collected by the vengeful "Dapiek Absaroka" are outlandish at best, it makes for some fun Old West mythologizin'. And who better to discuss Old West mythologizin' than artist/historian/something of a myth himself David Lambert, who has graced the Pink Smoke with his expertise on such subjects as Cattle Drive Westerns, Sam Peckinpah and faux-Wyatt Earp movies. Here he brings light to some of the tall tales, the rampant mutilating and biscuit-baking of Crow Killer, the brilliant original Milius script for Jeremiah Johnson and the changes made for the movie. The crew dives into the primetime Cowboys-Packers tie, from Micah Parsons' borderline sack to LaFleur's clock-management mess and the Packers' WR room still missing a true top option. They debate whether the 4-0 Eagles are contenders or just winning ugly, why the NFC West looks loaded, and who actually tops the AFC after a soft Bills start. Around the league: the Giants' Jackson Dart debut, Falcons' post-staff-change bounce, Jets' ongoing chaos, and the Chiefs finding rhythm with their RB rotation. Plus: Kevin's quest for the perfect office hallway catchphrase and Tony's bourbon-forward “Mountain Man” cocktail.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
James Beckwourth lived one of the most extraordinary lives in American frontier history. Born the son of a white plantation owner and an enslaved Black woman, Beckwourth was freed by his father and set out to make his own way in the West. He trapped beaver alongside legendary mountain men like Jim Bridger and Kit Carson, fought in battles ranging from the swamps of Florida to the Pacific coast, and rose to prominence as a leader among the Crow Nation. Beckwourth, also known as Bloody Arm, became known not only for his courage and skill but also for his gift of storytelling. Some saw him as a hero, others as a braggart, and many as a man whose tales blurred the line between fact and fiction. His legacy remains controversial, from accusations of involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre to the mystery surrounding his death near the Bighorn River. Was James Beckwourth a fearless frontiersman, a dangerous opportunist, or simply a legend much too large to pin down? Historians still debate the truth, but what's undeniable is that Beckwourth left a mark on the Old West that cannot be ignored. This week Dr. Jacob Lee joins in to talk about the real Jeremiah Johnson—and why Redford's version may be a fantasy. About our guest:Jacob Lee is a historian of early America and the American West, focusing on colonialism and borderlands. His first book, Masters of the Middle Waters: Indian Nations and Colonial Ambitions Along the Mississippi (Harvard University Press, 2019), embedded intertwined Native and imperial histories in the physical landscape of Middle America, a vast region encompassing much of the central Mississippi River valley. In the centuries between the collapse of the ancient metropolis of Cahokia around A.D. 1300 and the rise of the U.S. empire in the early 1800s, power flowed through the kinship-based alliances and social networks that controlled travel and communication along the many rivers of the midcontinent. Drawing on a range of English-, French-, Spanish-, and Illinois-language sources, as well as archaeology, oral history, and environmental science, Masters of the Middle Watersemphasized the power of personal relationships and the environment to shape the course of empires and nations. He is currently working on a history of the everyday operation of legal jurisdiction in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma and Kansas) from the 1820s through the 1850s. Tentatively-titled The Laws of Nations: Legal Jurisdiction and the Struggle for Sovereignty in Indian Territory, this project examines the ways that Indigenous nations, especially Cherokee Nation and Osage Nation, effected sovereignty over people and land through the assertion and exercise of jurisdiction over crimes committed within their borders. In adjudicating crimes ranging from murder to theft to bootlegging, Native nations repaired harms, defined citizenship, and exercised authority in the face of the efforts of U.S. federal and state governments to usurp and undermine Indigenous governance.
Sal recounted a terrifying experience where a skunk's spray infiltrated his entire New Jersey home, leaving him in a state of panic at 2:30 a.m. Believing it was a fire or a gas leak, he called the police, only to have the officer calmly inform him that the culprit was a skunk, a normal occurrence for "living in the woods." Sal, who has been outspoken about his love for his new home in Jersey, felt his affection for the Garden State waver as he realized he now has to contend with snakes, bears, earthquakes, and now, the overwhelming stench of a skunk.

Plenty of famous explorers and frontiersmen emerged from America's periods of expansion and exploration, and today the likes of Daniel Boone, Kit Carson, and Davy Crockett remain household names. You're probably not familiar, but should be, with the name of another prominent pioneer: Jedediah Smith. Smith was a hunter, trapper, writer, cartographer, mountain man, and explorer who notched a lot of firsts: He was the first to lead a documented exploration from the Salt Lake frontier to the Colorado River and was part of the first parties of U.S. citizens to cross the Mojave Desert, the Sierra Nevada, and the Great Basin Desert. Having survived three attacks by Native Americans and one mauling by a grizzly bear, Smith's explorations became resources for those who followed after and led to the use of the South Pass as the dominant route across the Continental Divide for pioneers on the Oregon Trail. In the new book he co-authored, Throne of Grace: A Mountain Man, an Epic Adventure, and the Bloody Conquest of the American West, my guest, Bob Drury, uses the oft-forgotten Smith as a guide to an oft-forgotten period in American history. Today on the show, Bob paints a picture of a volatile American landscape in which trappers and Native Americans collided and clashed in the early decades of the 19th century. We discuss how the Lewis and Clark expedition created a lust for adventure among young men, how the humble beaver played an outsized role in settling the Western frontier, and how warfare changed amongst Native American tribes with the introduction of the horse. Along the way, Bob shows us how the life of Jed Smith intersected with all these historic trends and shares the epic exploits that he and other mountain men took part in while exploring and mapping the American West.Resources Related to the PodcastBob's last appearance on the AoM podcast: Episode #469 — How Valley Forge Turned the Tide of the Revolutionary WarAoM article about mountain menAoM Podcast #681: The Epic Exploits of Kit CarsonHugh Glass
