Often (unfairly) overlooked and frequently (unjustly) criticized, ‘Midnights' closer “Dear Reader” is a diaristic, confessional, and somber track that reminds its listener that, despite being full of advice, the author herself is not to be trusted. In this installment of the Mental Cages series, which doubles as Taylearning's landmark 100th episode (!!!), Dani & Olivia break down this divisive track, chewing on every lyric to make some sense of it all. Taylor has spent the better part of two decades giving advice to millions through her lyrics, but in this song, she has herself (and the audience) wondering- is she really qualified to be a beacon of truth? 100 EPISODES!!! Thank you for being here. It's cheesy, but we love this community and what we have built from the ground up. In ihrem aktuellen Buch Bannmeilen.
In Episode Fourteen, DDSWTNP turn our attention for the first time to DeLillo's drama – and to a largely unknown work by DeLillo as playwright, a 1966 radio play and disturbing take on U.S. race relations titled Mother. We cover the circumstances of the play's original broadcasts, its re-emergence in an internet archive recording more than 50 years later, and the strange way in which this story's armchair progressives and Billie Holiday fans, Ralph and Sally, end up making a fetishizing travesty of civil rights and racial integration in the play's brief 27 minutes. Topics include the importance of radio to Mother's themes of media occlusion, moral numbness, and erasure; what DeLillo means by Ralph's “white malady” of transparency and how it reworks images from another Ralph's Invisible Man; and what this play has to do with contemporaneous issues like interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia. We talk extensively as well about how Mother presages parts of the early novels, from jazz love in Americana to Taft in End Zone and Azarian in Great Jones Street. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
There are some things in the writing world that don't make a ton of sense in the world of regular humans. One of those things is pinch points. This podcast episode is going to be the start of a quick series of podcasts and regular posts about pinch points. The regular posts will be at our Substack LIVING HAPPY under the WRITE BETTER NOW publication. So, what are these little twerps called pinch points? They a way of thinking about novel or story structure that helps us keep the reader engaged. Pinch points are moments where the tension emerges again or is heightened. It's a place where you seductively say to the reader, “Hey, baby. Let's engage again.” Or maybe it's that they are saying, “Dear Reader, let me remind you what exactly is at stake here for our poor, dear, pathetic hero.” The pinch points are where the protagonist or hero of your story gets a little bit of pain. Ouch. So mean, us writers are so very mean. As Writing Mastery describes, “They rekindle the tension that may have waned by reminding us of the primary conflict and what it means for the characters. Without stakes, readers will quickly lose interest—therefore, pinch points are events of the plot that, strategically placed, keep the narrative from losing steam.” “In the traditional Three-Act Structure, the first act introduces the characters, setting, and conflict, while the third act culminates in the resolution. The second act, which constitutes the middle portion of the story, is often the longest and contains the rising action. Pinch points punctuate this act to create a sense of urgency and drive the story forward.” Pinch Points Are Not Plot Points So, here's the super important thing. Pinch points are not plot points. Yes, there is a lot of P-words in there, but to pinch is not to plot, though a dastardly villain might plot how to pinch. Plot points move the story forward are events connect the events of your story so it's not episodic. Pinch points Raise stakes or increase the conflict. Obstruct the hero from getting her goal, so often focus on the bad guy of the story or the antagonist and this is a big part of it, this is what makes it not a turning point Make the reader curious about what might happen, make them worried about what might happen, so keeps them reading Show us what our heroes are made of because of the extra pressure that these challenges create. As Writers Helping Writers writes, “New writers often concentrate on the Hook, Midpoint, and the big twist at the end. But without well-placed Pinch Points, the story will lose its sense of rising action, conflict, and tension. The quest cannot exist without an opponent, and the Pinch Points show the reader what that opposition is all about. “Pinch Points show how high the stakes are. They also set up the emotional change within the hero as they react to the new situation.” So, tomorrow on the blog, I'll be talking about where these babies go in your story. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Do not let the pinch points keep you from moving forward toward your goals. COOL EXERCISE Think about the bad guy in your story. Now write down: Their fetish What they'd buy at the grocery store What they'd buy at Wal-Mart What they could do to make things harder on the hero and easier on themselves PLACE TO SUBMIT River Styx The Castro Prize, named for our founding editor, Michael Castro, is a new prize awarded annually to exemplary works of poetry and fiction.

Letters From Rifka by Karen Hesse is told entirely in letter format, so here we go: Dear Reader, The year is 1919 in the month of September when Rifka (age 12) and her family make their escape from Russia. Sadly, the trip to America was eventful. In Poland, Rifka and her family got typhus except for her ornery brother Saul. After the family recovered their journey continued. Rifka befriends a Russian peasant on the train by fixing her hair. The vivid description of the peasant's scalp by the author is graphic so when Rifka is diagnosed with ringworm, there is no doubt where she caught it. Her long golden curls fall out. But there is something worse than losing her curls, losing her family. Her family must continue the journey to America where jobs await them. What will become of Rifka, astute readers ask? How does she survive? Fortunately, the country of Belgium opens its arms to immigrants. “That is what you are when you are wandering between two worlds.” Rifka is left with mama's locket and papa's prayer shawl. A kind Sister treats her ringworm everyday. She receives hospitality from a generous couple who share their home with her for about a year until her condition is completely healed. Finally, she is on to America! After waiting for a year, imagine her dismay when the Americans refuse to let her in because she is bald. During her journey, Rifka has been writing her cousin on the white spaces found around the poems in the Pushkin poetry book Tovah gifted her when her family left Russia. Rifka has the gift of language but better than knowing different languages is her gift of compassion for the hurting. The orphan baby with typhus becomes her mission as does the 7 year old Russian peasant boy that will not talk or eat. Can she help them? Will she be reunited with her family? “Suddenly I realize how defenseless we are —not just Jews, all of us…I realize how precious our lives are. And how brief.” May you join Rifka on her journey and see her wonderful example of taking life one day at a time and blooming where one is planted! In this episode of "Words That Burn," I delve into the enthralling microcosm of James Tate's poem "Dear Reader."Our journey through "Dear Reader's" 13 lines reveals the intricate layers and emotional depth that Tate, a beloved poet of the surreal, weaves into his direct dialogue with the reader. His poem is sometimes playful in tone, other times pure tongue in cheek, but always draws the reader deeper and deeper into the lines.I will look at Tate's distinct blend of suspenseful and macabre imagery. His ability to juxtapose the difficulties and joys of the everyday is a highlight of this episode, demonstrating why Tate's work is so popular among poets and poetry enthusiasts alike.I dissect each segment of "Dear Reader" in this insightful episode, beginning with its enigmatic opening lines. We delve into Tate's poem's symbolism and thematic content, discussing its implications for the nature of poetry and its impact on both readers and writers. Which can be devastating and illuminating in equal measureLearn more about James Tate's distinct style and his impact on the poetry community. Beller returns to the podcast this week to share with us a little about one of her latest releases, Healing the Mountain Man's Heart. We had a lovely chat, as always, and talked about the fun way she decided what to write about in this book, how she walks the line between sweet romance and electricity, and the incredible little book she wrote at a fifth grader. She shares with patrons the mountain range she's secretly always wanted to visit. Healing the Mountain Man's Heart by Misty M. Colleen Macklin is a game designer and a Professor in the School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons School of Design and author of Iterate: Ten Lessons in Design and Failure. She's interested in how games model and reveal ideologies through systems. And, incidentally, she reports she was recently diagnosed with ADHD, which makes her doubly cool in our crowd. She joins us today to talk about games and gaming and neurodiversity. We explore a wide range of topics, from the impact of ADHD on Colleen's life and teaching to her love for games and game design. Colleen shares her thoughts on how games can engage attentional deficits and embrace a broad neurodiversity spectrum. She also shares her journey with the game design collective Local No. 12 and their creations, including the videogame "Dear Reader.”Playing games helps us to rediscover playfulness in our lives no matter your age. If there's one thing we hope you'll walk away from this episode thinking about it's that you have the opportunity — the gift — that is creating more play in your own life everyday. You don't have to be a tabletop gamer, or a programmer in the video game field. All you have to do is wake up and decide: today, we play.Links & Notes ColleenMacklin.com Dear Reader BudgetBall Iterate: Ten Lessons in Design and Failure (The MIT Press) by John Sharp and Colleen Macklin The Monopolists by Mary Pilon (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (02:12) - Support the Show • Become a Patron! In the fourth episode and season finale, I look at the most recent cinematic adaptation of The Women from 2008. After giving details about the production, I provide some reviews of the film at the time. I also briefly speak about the 1977 adaptation "Frauen in New York," which I was unable to view. In the second part of the episode, I am joined by Shayna as we discuss various aspects of the film and ask the big question of whether it is feminist or misogynist. As always, I conclude the discussion with revealing whether the film follows the law or the spirit of The Women. The addition of the suffix "-ies" (or in the singular form, "-y") converts the word into a diminutive. Literally: "little pants." .... In fact, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first known use of "panties" is from a 1908 set of instructions for making doll clothes." Read the rest of the article here.
