Greg, Bruce, and Joey are back in the lab this week (or was it last week…time tends to escape us) to share stories about their latest concert experiences and discuss upcoming live events, including the Great Blue spring tour set to commence in May! During this episode, the hosts reminisce about recent shows in NYC - covering bands such as Mungion, Eggy, and The Motet - and “look forward” to seeing concerts from this *past* weekend featuring Dogs In A Pile and lespecial. The guys also head #downthepathway to talk tour with the boiz from Great Blue - Peter Anspach, Ethan Michael, Seth Zucker, and Nick Hanna! Beyond their upcoming tour, the group discusses the history behind Great Blue, the growth of the band as friends and musicians, and how all “musical paths” lead back to Guitar Hero (or Rock Band, if you happen to play the French horn…or drums, whatever floats your boat). During Umphrey's McGee's two night arena run in Asheville, North Carolina, new Umphrey's McGee Lighting Designer (and long-time listener to this podcast) Ben Factor broke off a few minutes to speak with Rob Turner. The conversation starts with a discussion about the nuances of some of the rooms Factor had just worked and some of the new lighting approaches he's bringing to the world of Umphrey's McGee. Then they jump into the Wayback Machine and Ben waxes poetic about his parents and what led up to him attending the University of Michigan for sound engineering. Factor talks about how the lighting work of Jefferson Waful (who was UM's previous LD) was his initial inspiration to start exploring the world of lighting. We learn how the bands Mungion and Spafford and specific people Ben met along the way (including the lighting designer Luke Stratton) all played roles in Factor's Road To Umph. We also get to hear about the process of trying out for the Umphrey's job, his preparation for his first shows with Umphrey's and what it was like to light an hour-plus, full-set version of the band's iconic musclequirk'y song, "Ringo." The episode ends with acoustic guitar whiz Billy Strings donning an electric guitar to jam with Umphrey's McGee (from the night before when this interview took place). We’re big fans of the music Mungion makes. Whether its the blend of different styles of music, the general groove, or the fun lyrics, these guys are what jam bands should be about, FUN! There 2017 ended with a bit of a thud, as you’ll soon here, but since the Winter of 2018 these guys have been gigging hard, and Live Fun Vol.1 is a compendium of some of the musical highlights of that tour. We caught up with friend of the show Justin Reckamp to check the pulse of the band coming off Summer Camp Festival last week, and to talk about Live Fun Vol.1 out now. Mungion’s complete tour schedule is available at mungion.com. **First Song:** 00:45 – Basketball (Live) **Interview Begins:** 05:03 **Extro Song:** 42:15 – Que Maste Tu Cabello > Scrambled Legs > Que Maste Tu Cabello Pt. 2 (Live) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong are all about raw, emotional fun. I really dig their sound and you will to. Like most jam bands today, they blend all kinds of genres but they are rooted in a very sassy funk groove. We recently sat down with front man Greg Ormont to talk about their upcoming release Pizazz and a whole lot more. The conversation started just after I watched their Lockn’ set, and I asked Greg to recall how awesome that set was…… You can listen to this episode below, or by connecting and subscribing to one of the podcast platforms here or search your favorite podcast platform for “The Sound Podcast”; Itunes: http://bit.ly/sndpodi TuneIn: http://bit.ly/sndti Stitcher: http://bit.ly/sndsti GooglePlay: http://bit.ly/sndplay Get The Sound Podcast App: http://bit.ly/TSPAPPS See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This Labor Day weekend included a tragic loss for the music community. Walter Becker, one half of Steely Dan, died at age 67. The Dan have influenced legions of musicians with their potent mix of jazz, rock, and r&b influences, not to mention the sardonic wit and their brainy, sometimes obtuse take on songwriting. Their music isn't for everyone, a big reason why those who get them love their ethos. We read an excerpt of Rob Sheffield's Rolling Stone article on Walter, which describes and sums up Steely Dan and Becker in an elegant manner. Mungion Update: The band we talked about last time are on the verge of their tour, and are halfway to their GoFundMe fundraising goal. They were recently robbed of $50k worth of instruments and gear, and need your help here. We concluded the podcast with a Mungion tune called "Hindsight". Take a listen, then give til it helps.

We were all set to talk with Mungion last week but unfortunately something went horribly wrong for them, so we had to reschedule. Their entire van and trailer were stolen in Detroit just before they were set to head cross country for their first headlining tour. Wisely, they’ve started a GoFundMe campaign, and are putting their best foot forward and continuing with their tour plans. I sat down with Justin Reckamp to get the low down on the band, and their plans moving forward.  You can listen to this episode below, or by connecting and subscribing to one of the podcast platforms here or search your favorite podcast platform for “The Sound Podcast”; Itunes: http://bit.ly/sndpodi TuneIn: http://bit.ly/sndti Stitcher: http://bit.ly/sndsti GooglePlay: http://bit.ly/sndplay Get The Sound Podcast App: http://bit.ly/TSPAPPS See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mungion are an incredible band from Chicago, Illinois. Their music shows a number of influences; pop, rock, jazz, funk. And it's all done with incredible musicianship, intricate arranging, and a great sense of humor. At some point along the way, the Mungions met some guys from out HQ in Lafayette, Studio 37s Scott Ausherman, Noah Freeman, and LD Miller. Noah is Mungion's FOH engineer. The band has done some recording at 37, and Noah has been traveling with them. It was on one such trip that the unthinkable happened. The band was in their Detroit motel room when two guys broke into their truck and made off with $41,500 worth of equipment: guitars, drums, sound gear, the works. They are now involved in a GoFundMe campaign, and are only halfway to goal with a tour in one month!     All of us who love music and musicians have a very familial feeling among our bands. Please help this family member in a crisis.
