We roar back into life for our 2025 season with the podcast crossover that nobody but us was asking for, as co-host of venerated blockbuster Beatles podcast Steven Cockcroft joins Jeremy Dylan to talk about George Harrison's solo classic 'Living in the Material World'. In amongst numerous fab-adjacent tangents, Steven and Jeremy talk about the long shadow All Things Must Pass casts over this record, Ringo Starr and Jim Keltner's innovative double drumming techniques, the lead piano of the legendary Nicky Hopkins, how this album might have served as a template for the rest of Harrison's recording career, Harrison's bitterness around the Beatles and the push and pull between his spirituality and material appetites, lawyer-based hoedowns, Harrison's extremely intermittent history as a live act and more. Plus, Steven shares his memories of attending the amazing Concert for George tribute night featuring every single living (at the time) rock legend plus a surprise Monty Python reunion.

George was quite busy between "All Things Must Pass" and "The Concert for Bangladesh".      However, many of the things he played on were not under his own name!    We look at two projects where George was a significant contributer: Gary Wright's "Footprint", and Billy Preston's "I Wrote a Simple Song".      Excellent playing, and a link between George's Beatles guitar-playing, his work on "All Things Must Pass", and his turn on John Lennon's "Imagine" (when he finally turned back to his own projects with "Living in the Material World!")

Today's episode is on "George Harrison: Living in the Material World", a 2011 film about The Quiet One directed by Martin Scorsese. It's available on Max. Our guest today is George Harrison and Bob Dylan superfan Britt Eisnor. Check out her excellent Dylan content on Instagram. This movie is about George's mysticism, more or less, and weaves in and out of his very famous life story. There are some great talking heads, not all of whom are great people (I'm looking at you, Phil Spector) or come of as well as they think they do (and now I'm looking at you, Eric Clapton), and one conspicuous absence. Also, this movie would have you believe that George Harrison only recorded one solo album. It seems like his career as a musician continued on past 1970, but who can really tell for sure?

Upon rejoining the band following his departure in the Get Back sessions, George pulled his more serious material, most of which would end up on All Things Must Pass. Along with his blusey and lightweight "For You Blue," he also brought in a stomping little piano song he wrote during the sessions, "Old Brown Shoe." It wouldn't find a home for a few months until the band needed a b-side to "The Ballad of John & Yoko," and even then, it remains one of the more obscure songs in the Beatles catalogue. But that said, I've always loved it. George sings like he's really having fun with it, and whoever the hell is playing whatever on this song (it's all very murky and mysterious) is really killing it. But what's he singing about? George's shoe game was pretty solid after all. Maybe it's about stepping out with a new love? Maybe it's about leaving someone...or someone(s)? It's always a pleasure to welcome our old pal Sean Nelson back to RTB! Sean is best known as the singer of the band Harvey Danger, who's song "Flagpole Sitta" is one of the 90s defining songs, and the tip of the iceburg of a ton of great music in their catalogue that you'd do yourselves a favor to dig into (along with is own solo work). He's also now the host of his own podcast, The Wonder of It All, a deep dive in to the pros and cons of success. He's a great conversationalist so it only makes sense his podcast would be fantastic. George Harrison was reaching his creative peak in the late 1960s, but famously had a difficult time getting the other Beatles interested in recording his songs. So when they broke up in 1970, George got a massive group of musicians together and recorded his entire backlog to release all at once. All Things Must Pass was the first ever triple album by a single artist, and (apart from Apple Jam) is a tightly focused, intense, cathartic listening experience unmatched in popular music. Our very, very special guest today is the great Kevin Harrington, who most Beatles fans will recognize as the “redhead on the roof” in the Let It Be and Get Back films. At the time, Kevin was only 18 years old(!) but had been working for the Beatles, in some capacity, for years, first as an errand boy at NEMS and then as an assistant to Brian Epstein. He worked alongside Mal Evans as the Beatles' “roadie,” as he's billed in the Let It Be credits. After the Beatles broke up, Kevin stayed closely in the fold, even living at Friar Park with George and Patti during the recording of All Things Must Pass. Then, he finally struck out on his own in the ‘70s and beyond and was a roadie with some of the biggest names in music, including Wishbone Ash, Motorhead, Petula Clark, Ted Nugent, Tina Turner and more. We're back for the second and final installment of our look back at George Harrison's 1973 album Living in the Material World - a masterpiece to many and a worthy follow-up to All Things Must Pass. In this episode, we'll conclude our track-by-track analysis of the record, including album highlights "Be Here Now," "Who Can See It," and of course the title track "Living in the Material World" - George's ode to rock and roll life and simultaneous yearning to escape it. This collection of nearly all new material was a smash success commercially, though its critical reception would be but a preview of challenges to come for George later in the decade. That is all for Season 5 of Take it Away, and we'd like to thank everyone for joining us on this foray into the solo work of George Harrison. We'll see you next time as the 70s rage on, the albums multiply, and an upstart record label appears on the scene...Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/takeitaway. Hosted on Acast. WALLS is 21 songs swinging between the likes of Prine and Cash, to Rodney Crowell, or even Allman Brothers to Soundgarden. At the heart is the amazing songwriting of this Mid-Michigan gem. His album could easily have been broken into 2 (country and rock) and comes across like the great Manassas 1972 debut or even a tinge of George Harrison's All Things Must Pass with its varying layout of rockers, country, jams, and ballads. We're living in the material world! And we're excited to be giving you part one of a two-part TAKE IT AWAY series detailing the inception, writing, recording, and release of George Harrison's epic LP: LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD! In 1973, after a (nearly) three-year absence from record store stands, Harrison returned to the charts with the follow-up studio album to 1970's ALL THINGS MUST PASS -- and thanks to the mammoth success of that album and its singles, anticipation for this new release was at a fever pitch. Thankfully for fans and critics alike, the lead single did not disappoint, and both "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)" and its corresponding album shot to the top of the charts in short order. But while George's commercial successes continued, Living in the Material World showed the world another, darker side of his life -- one fueled by the temptations of both rock stardom and spiritual enlightenment. In this first episode we'll uncover the path toward this crossroads, and drill in on the songs that tell the story of a Pisces fish at a fork in the road...Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/takeitaway. Darrin Roberts grew up in Southern California with a “Kevin Arnold-Wonder Years” type upbringing. After a neighbor suggested his mother take her 3 year old to a recently released “war movie”, he became obsessed with all things cinema. After getting his degree at USC's School of Cinematic Arts he began working on a series of music film projects as both a camera operator and a film editor. In May of 2014 an Oscar winning producer suggested he meet with Colin Hanks and Sean Stuart regarding a documentary about the rise and fall of Tower Records, a film the two had spent several years making. As a customer of the El Toro Tower Records, it was a dream job. On today's episode Darrin walks us through much of his process working on “All Things Must Pass” and gives us some insights as to what made the film, what didn't make it and why, the relationship between a film editor and a director, how much film and audio he waded through to cut the “Tower Doc” down to a tight, cohesive 95 minute film, the aftermath and the opportunities presented to him since completing that project. We also spend a nice chunk of time talking about Darrin's latest project “Thriller 40”, a documentary he edited with famed music critic Nelson George directing. “Thriller 40” sheds all of Michael Jackson's personal baggage (hard to do) and focuses on the early to mid-80's when Michael and Quincy Jones were at the top of their creative powers. An interesting through line to the film is the Grammy Awards virtual snub of “Off The Wall” and how it drove Michael Jackson to create “Thriller”. Like “All Things Must Pass”, “Thriller 40” is a tight 90 minute story that tells a fascinating behind the scenes story of a cultural zeitgeist, the likes of which we may never see again.

Dr. Ryan Lambros and Paul Krauss MA LPC discuss: Is Religious Deconstruction Good for your Mental Health? Deconstruction is the free act of valuing (evaluating) what was, experiencing what is, and holding a posture of curiosity moving forward.  Some points to consider: A.The intention of this discussion is not to destroy a faith system. It's not even to deconstruct a faith system. “De” words won't provide holistic health. Rather, the intention is to evaluate systems, dogmas, and ideas based on our experience and reason. Curiosity and compassion are key to pursuing spiritual health. The intention is to offer freedom, hope, and beauty for people to pursue healing in their spiritual journey. B. Why are so many people deconstructing Evangelical Christianity and leaving the church? C. The church isn't controlling the narrative anymore. D. Are we lacking deep and meaningful spirituality practices in our current culture? Also Discussed: Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Evangelical movement, Power, Money, Control, a partial History of the Church, Sex-Cult, Patriarchy, bibliolatrous behavior, critical thinking, scientific exploration, Spirituality, Healthy Spirituality, Unhealthy spirituality, Gaslighting, Narcissism, Truth, "truth", Catholic Priest letters from 500 years ago, Jesus, the Book of Enoch, the Gnostic Gospels, the Bible, US Politics, dogma, tithing, religious fundamentalism, capitalism's influence on the church, purity culture, internal family systems, counseling, therapy, trauma, defense mechanisms, human adaptation, "the self", integration, healing spirituality, curiosity, compassion, learning from myths, etc. Dr. Ryan Lambros is a Certified Life Coach and Chaplain in Gilbert, AZ. He is married to Jessica, a Licensed Professional Counselor, and they have two sons.  Ryan completed his doctorate from Northwind Seminary with his doctoral work focusing on the intersection of philosophy and psychology as it pertains to a phenomenological metaphysic of healing.  Ryan is passionate about walking with people in their healing journey, specifically in relationships and religious trauma. Website: www.thetablecoach.com/coaching Instagram: @tablecoaching Bonus IG: @hereticallife "On this immediate level of life and structure, myths offer life models. But the models have to be appropriate to the time in which you are living, and our time has changed so fast that what was proper fifty years ago is not proper today. The virtues of the past are the vices of today. And many of what were thought to be the vices of the past are the necessities of today. The moral order has to catch up with the moral necessities of actual life in time, here and now. And that is what we are not doing. The old-time religion belongs to another age, another people, another set of human values, another universe. By going back you throw yourself out of sync with history. Our kids lose their faith in the religions that were taught to them, and they go inside."- Joseph Campbell Myth is powerful not just because it holds value in its literal-ness (which it may), but because it transcends the literal facts as well - offering us something more valuable than truth…beauty. -Dr. Ryan Lambros Get involved with the National Violence Prevention Hotline: 501(c)(3) Donate Share with your network Write your congressperson Sign our Petition Looking for excellent medical billing services? Paul McCartney & Wings – "Band on the Run"

Turbulente Produktionsbedingungen "Band on the Run" wurde in Afrika, in Nigeria, genau genommen in Lagos produziert. Alle Tapes und Ideen, die Paul bisher in irgendeiner Form für "Band on the Run" gesammelt hatte, waren also weg. McCartney antwortet seinerseits in "Band on the Run" mit dem Song "Let Me Roll It". "Let Me Roll It" ist ursprünglich eine Textzeile aus einem George Harrison-Song "I'd Have You Anytime" aus dem Album "All Things Must Pass" von 1970. John Lennon bezeichnete seinerseits das Album "Band on the Run" sogar als fantastisches Werk. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Band on the Run" wird im Podcast gesprochen (15:50) – "Bluebird"(25:24) – "Jet"(29:49) – "Band on the Run"(48:33) – "Let Me Roll It"(52:27) – "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)"__________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen (47:31) – "Too Many People" von Paul McCartney und Lina McCartney(49:14) – "I'd Have You Anytime" von George Harrison __________ Paul Mc Cartney & Wings Rockshow Live: https://youtu.be/BiCboZoKOcw?si=xPYLZJiAC3KyKQyh Rolling Stone: Paul McCartney & Wings veröffentlichen "Band on the Run": https://www.rollingstone.de/rewind-today-1973-paul-mccartney-wings-veroeffentlichen-band-on-the-run-362018/ Musik-Sammler Release: "Band on the Run": https://www.musik-sammler.de/release/paul-mccartney-wings-band-on-the-run-2-cd-358897/ YouTube Paul McCartney "Band on the Run": https://youtu.be/LulVVED_93c?si=ZU0uORCdXgIEfFq8 John Lennon singt das Album "Band on the Run": https://youtu.be/FPkC54xEEnU?si=JEzTPGiD4fno63oa Paul McCartney & Wings "Band on the Run" BBC-Doku: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9dEqN-dQtY __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? But there are hints of Harrison's Hindu influences in many Beatles songs as well.  We are so excited to speak to him about so many things – Hinduism, George Harrison, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and the Bhagavad Gita, for starters.

They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962.   Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to.

Peter Frampton is one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. In 2007, he won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Fingerprints and in 2014 was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. His album All Blues was #1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard's Blues Chart. In 2020 Frampton was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, his autobiography Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list, and his 2021 album Frampton Forgets The Words was released to widespread critical acclaim. Later this year, he will appear on Dolly Parton's forthcoming album, Rockstar (out November 17), as the only artist featured on two tracks. And after 47 years, Frampton Comes Alive! remains one of the top-selling live records of all time selling over 17 million worldwide. What an absolute thrill to have this music legend in The Back Room! Peter and I chat about his initial exposure to music and the guitar; his life-long friendship with David Bowie; his early music influences; his days playing in the bands The Herd and Humble Pie; becoming pals with George Harrison and playing on his masterpiece album All Things Must Pass; the phenomenal success of Frampton.Comes Alive!; living and creating with Inclusion Body Myositis; and his current tour. And, rumor has it there might just be a live impromptu "talk box" performance! Got somethin' to say?! George Harrison holds a special place in the hearts of the Untitled Beatles Podcast, and millions of Beatles fans. As prolific as John and Paul were, and as much as few could lay a beat down like Bernard Purdie, who overdubbed many, if not all, of Ringo's tracks (chew on that, Lewishon), George was arguably the spirit and soul of The Beatles; no little feat. #DixieChicken Join us as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of his 1973 blockbuster, “Living In The Material World”. It heightened the spirituality of “All Things Must Pass”, while ditching that album's sprawl and layers upon layers of production, resulting in a fascinating, beautiful record laden with musical and lyrical juxtapositions. In part 1 of this Deep Dish, the Material Two, with an assist from Producer Casey and a rather aggressive P3Z-nuts, break down the album's history, reception, and legacy, and also ask:

The last time Kevin Ertell saw Russ Solomon, at the premiere of “All Things Must Pass”, Russ walked up to him and the first thing out of his mouth was, “Kevin! Can you believe what those fuckers have done to our website!?” During his time as SVP of Tower.com, Kevin spent many an afternoon in Russ Solomon's office while Russ peppered him with questions about online retailing from a recent article he had read. It was time that Kevin cherished. Kevin had a wide and varied career at Tower Records. Starting out in the original Las Vegas store in the video store, then to "apprentice" as the Classical Buyer for that store and out to Panorama City California as a Video Assistant Manager and eventual Store Manager. He landed as Sherman Oaks Video Store Manager under Regional Manager Gayle Boswell. While Kevin was in California he auditioned as the bass player for the band of a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member, but didn't get the gig.Working in the stores wasn't enough for Kevin. Having an interest in tech, he joined the Store Service team. With an all star roster of employees many will remember, he was a part of the nationwide and then world wide rollout of the Tower ISP program.Wanting to put that ISP knowledge to practical use and get closer to his long distance relationship, Kevin took the position of General Manager of the Tyson's Corner Virginia store. In a thriving, busy store he worked the Tower ISP program to its fullest, oversaw a one of a kind Cirque Du Soleil in-store and dealt with the wrath of a woman who worked for a US Senator who wanted Tower Records to remove their Playboy videos, lest they tempt her son.It was back to Sacramento to work on the challenge of Tower.com. Kevin tells us about the time it took to make Tower.com the #2 store in the US back when buying music on the web was not normal, how a consortium of retailers including Virgin, Best Buy, Borders Books and Tower Records got rejected by the record labels to sell major label music files before Apple Music and how after 20 years, in 2005 it all ended as Kevin was recruited by Borders Books to rebuild their Borders.com and help start up their Borders Rewards program.Kevin points out early in the episode that none of this would have happened had he not got a job at Tower Records in April of 1985 following an extremely dark chapter in his young life. Kevin said “I found my people. Tower saved me.”

I know there are some Christians that think pop culture is bad, evil, maybe even demonic, and I know that they are very vocal, but most of the Christians I have known in my life have been more open. They are able to see the value of the secular alongside the spiritual. Me, I think I'm more on the radical side of things. I don't believe anything is secular. I see Jesus all over the place. Speaking of the Beatles, I remember when my dad slipped into a coma and I thought he was going to die. I was in California and he was in Maine, and it would be at least 24 hours before I'd be able to get to him. The only comfort I could get that day was in the George Harrison-penned Beatles song "Within You Without You." It had long been my least favorite song on that album, but for some reason it popped up now and wouldn't let go. It was so simple and emotionless, and I heard George intone, "You're really only very small and life goes on within you and without you." Should that have comforted me? I don't know, but it did. I heard Jesus in that song that day. I got back to Maine, and he stayed in that coma for a couple more days. Windchill made it 30 degrees below zero, and I was driving back and forth from his house to the hospital, and it was George Harrison again, this time singing, "All Things Must Pass." I did not know if my Dad was going to live or die, but I heard this long-haired British Hindu Hippie tell me this is the way of things and I believed him. And I heard Jesus that day.

Bobby discusses his own solo career, plus working with legends like Delaney & Bonnie, Steve Winwood, Duane Allman, "Duck" Dunne, and many more. In addition, an album was recently found by CCR drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford called California Gold which was a project he and Bobby did together in the late 70s, but never saw the light of day until now and it's amazing.
