Steve Gruber is joined by Ivey Gruber, President of the Michigan Talk Network, for a fast-moving conversation covering the latest twists in the stock market, the state of the U.S. economy, and a surprising new revelation about how companies like Uber Eats may be pricing your food based on your personal data. They also lighten things up with the story of a 103-year-old woman who swears by drinking three Dr Peppers a day, and whether she's uncovered the secret to longevity (spoiler: probably not, but it's fun to imagine!). A mix of economics, tech, and human-interest oddities...

I messaged them and asked about local pick up and cash price. They were very interested in cash money with pick up and I saved some money on my purchase. So ask, it will never kill you, and might save you a few dollars. Operation Independence 3-Month Rental at Basecamp: $800/month, Event Rental Launch Main Topic: Fearless Living – The Two Sides of "Go For It" We are talking about two forms of courage today: Professional Courage (to launch and critique) and Personal Courage (to be vulnerable and stand up). 1. The Courage to Launch and Critique: The Farm-to-Table AAR The Farm-to-Table Dinner was a huge "Go For It" moment. The real courage is in the fearless honesty of the After Action Review (AAR): Is this financially viable? $155 - 13/hour The Diagnostic Tool: The Homestead Revenue Stack We put the Dinner through our Homestead Revenue Stack to analyze where it sits and what it needs to succeed. The Dinner sits primarily in the Service Layer (Dinner/Class). AAR Findings & Action Plan Logistics Check: Reality vs. plan mismatch. Example: "Sunset on paper vs. Sunset in the holler (30 min BUBBLE)." Venue Needs: The oven/stove at BC needs an upgrade. Experience Flow: Need better arrival/mingling flow. Financial Fixes: We need to Price up, increase numbers at the dinner, and rely on Upsells. Opportunity: There is an opportunity for a premium cherry add-on for the dinner service. Action: Get the chef on the wild edible walk (to enhance the product layer). Action: If connected to a Farm-to-Table meal delivery service, that would be amazing. 2. The Courage to Stand Up and Be Vulnerable: Local Politics Sometimes "Go For It" means stepping outside your established comfort zone for a cause greater than your business. The Event: Giving public testimony in front of county officials. The Experience: I got nervous! My voice sounded emotional instead of my usual assertive self. The Takeaway: The vulnerability made the testimony more powerful. Being involved in important local matters is one of the few ways we can truly make a difference for our communities, food freedom, and farmers. Bringing it Home: Your Challenge to Go For It Courage is action, not the absence of fear. Don't wait until you're "ready." 1. Fearlessly Audit a Project: Go For It and audit a side hustle or homestead project using a framework like the Revenue Stack. Be honest about where you need to price up, fix it, or drop it. 2. Go For the Hard Conversation: Go For It and speak up about a local issue or personal matter you know you should address. Your passion is more powerful than silence. 3. Take the First Small Step: What is the one small, specific step you can take today to move toward a big goal? Final Thought Sometimes, you just need to go for it. Make it a great week. Song: GUYS! The episode features brothers Billy and Tommy Hall of Halls Chophouse, sharing how their late father's “service before self” philosophy, honed in luxury hotels, became the backbone of a family-run steakhouse that launched in 2009 on a rough stretch of King Street in Charleston during the Great Recession and slowly grew into a 10-restaurant hospitality group across the Southeast. They talk about treating every guest like they're walking into their home: handshakes and hugs at the door, learning names and stories, grabbing Dr Peppers and pizzas from other businesses if that's what it takes, writing stacks of handwritten thank-you notes every night, and viewing each shift as a “battle” to change someone's day for the better. Along the way they dive into hiring for attitude over polish, leading by example on the floor, managing through brutal beef prices while protecting quality via long-term relationships with suppliers, balancing a 24/7 business with family life, and the deep gratitude they feel for guests who choose to spend their hard-earned money in a place that strives to make them feel seen, known, and validated.Key Takeaways Hospitality is in their DNA.Billy and Tommy grew up as “hotel brats,” moving 23 times while their dad ran iconic properties; service before self wasn't a training module, it was simply how their family lived. Halls started in the worst of times and places. The first Halls Chophouse opened in 2008–2009 on a then-boarded-up stretch of King Street during a severe economic downturn, and early nights saw as few as 17 guests. It's a true family business.Mom, dad, brothers, sister, and even grandma were all in the building at the start; their mother still works brunches and decorates for holidays, and Tommy's kids now grow up in the restaurants. Growth has been deliberate and values-driven.What started as one steakhouse has grown into 10 concepts, including Rita's Seaside Grill on Folly Beach, Halls locations in Greenville, Columbia, Somerville, Nashville, and a seafood concept, Halls Catch, all built around the same hospitality standards. They treat every day like game day.Drawing on Tommy's sports background, they see restaurant service as a daily battle; “you're only as good as your last steak,” and winning with guests (sales) fixes a lot of other problems. They hire for heart, not just skills. The focus is on good people with great attitudes and energy, then giving them freedom to be human and connect instead of reciting scripts; managers are expected to model that behavior. Old-school touches still win in a digital world.Handshakes, eye contact, remembering names, personally walking guests to the restroom, and sending 70+ handwritten thank-you notes a night are non-negotiables that make guests feel truly valued. “Yes” is the default answer. If a kid wants pizza or a guest wants Dr Pepper, they'll go down the street or across the way to get it; they refuse to hide behind “we don't have that” when a little extra effort can delight someone. They manage headwinds by doubling down on experience.Even as beef prices surge and costs climb, they stay committed to top-tier product through long relationships with suppliers like Allen Brothers, and make up for higher prices by delivering unforgettable service. They see guests as family and the journey as a marathon. To their regulars who visit multiple times a week and to first-timers alike, their message is simple: thank you, tell us when we fall short, and know we're in this for the long haul, not a quick hit.

Mark spent the night drinking beer with his friends and trying to pick up girls, passing most of his time in a cantina called Sgt. Peppers, and a honky-tonk called the London Pub. But when his friends are ready to call it a night, they can't find him in either bar. They assumed he'd gotten lucky and went back to the hotel without him. But Mark Kilroy was never seen alive again.Have a question or comment? Episode Overview: In this powerful and heartfelt conversation, Amy Wheeler welcomes yoga therapists and authors Marilyn Peppers-Citizen and Charlene Muhammad to discuss their groundbreaking new book, Yoga in the Black Community: Healing Through Wholeness, History, and Hope. With humility, courage, and vision, Marilyn and Charlene share the deeply intentional 4-year journey that led to the book's creation—from its origins in conversations on chronic pain and health disparities to a larger message of universal healing through Yoga.Together, they explore the historical exclusion of Black communities from mainstream yoga spaces, systemic health inequities, and the emotional toll of ongoing racial bias in healthcare and research. Yet this episode is also rooted in hope—emphasizing the healing power of community-based practice, and the recognition that Yoga is not something to be “brought into” the Black community—it's already there.Listeners will be moved by their reflections on resilience, the limits of resilience, and the need to reimagine yoga therapy education, credentialing, and access through a lens of equity, affordability, and cultural inclusion.Key Topics Covered:How the book organically evolved through monthly conversations, Google Docs, and shared purposeChronic pain, scientific bias, and the history of mistrust in research and healthcareYoga as a path to liberation, community care, and remembrance of inherent wholenessCentering Black lived experience while offering a universal message of healingThe challenges of inclusion in mainstream yoga and the importance of culturally-rooted practiceReimagining Yoga therapy education and credentialing with equity and accessibilityActionable steps for individual and collective healing, starting with self-reflectionA call to yoga professionals to integrate social, historical, and emotional literacy into their workQuotes to Remember:“You don't need to be in a place to practice Yoga. It's how you wake up in the morning, how you walk through the day, and how you sleep at night.” – Marilyn Peppers-Citizen“If you want to work with any community, you must know their history.” – Charlene Muhammad“We are not a broken people. We are whole humans with pride, joy, and daily challenges.” – Marilyn Peppers-CitizenResources Mentioned: Yoga in the Black Community: Healing Through Wholeness, History, and Hope – by Charlene Muhammad & Marilyn Peppers-Citizen Jana Long's film: The Uncommon Yogi Gabor Maté – The Myth of NormalConnect with the Guests:Charlene Muhammad – Yoga therapist, educator, and community healer Marilyn Peppers-Citizen – Yoga therapist and advocate for health equityTakeaway Message: This episode is a call to reflect, remember, and reconnect—with ourselves, our communities, and the deeper truths of yoga. A.Ron is back with his buddy Pete Peppers to talk Foundation Season 3 one last time. Pete is a fellow Foundation book reader, so finally I have someone to go in depth with theories on where they're going in the adaptation of Asimov's work. Pete also found a collection of cut scenes in script form on Goyer's site, which is the bulk of the first bit of this podcast. Be warned, spoilers for Foundation Season 4 and on! Think jalapeños are just spicy little peppers? There's way more to them than that, especially when it comes to knowing exactly when to harvest for the flavor, heat, and crunch you want. In this video, I'll walk you through every stage of a jalapeño's growth, from its first crisp green fruit to its deep red, smoky-ready finish. You'll learn how to start peppers (and why most gardeners should skip starting from seed), the companions that make them thrive, and the telltale signs of ripeness for different uses, whether you're pickling, topping your favorite soup, or making your own chipotle peppers. Plus, I'll share my pro tips for keeping your plants producing all season long, and what to do when storms or frost are on the horizon. By the end, you'll know exactly when and how to harvest jalapeños so you get the best yield and flavor, no guesswork required. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's what kind of safety Jabrill Peppers can be. Peppers has mostly played strong safety throughout his NFL career. But what does that mean when it comes to the Pittsburgh defense, and how can he fit in around DeShon Elliott, Chuck Clark and Juan Thornhill? What's a strong safety, anyway? Alan breaks it down. September 10, 2025 - Season 16, Episode 22 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right to talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers signing veteran S Jabrill Peppers on Tuesday. We discuss what Peppers brings to defense and how he could see some playing time right away with S DeShon Elliott currently sidelined with a knee injury. The Steelers injury report has grown some heading into Week 2, so Alex and I go over Elliott, DT Derrick Harmon, and ILB Malik Harrison already being ruled out for the team's Week 2 Sunday home game against the Seattle Seahawks. We also talk about CB Joey Porter Jr. and OLB Nick Herbig both entering Week 2 as questionable with hamstring injuries. The Steelers made several transactions on Wednesday morning, so Alex and I make sure to cover those during the show. We address the Week 2 third quarterback situation the Steelers now have and if rookie QB Will Howard might find his way back from the Reserve/Injured list sooner than expected now that QB Skylar Thompson has joined him on that list as of Wednesday morning. Steelers HC Mike Tomlin held his weekly press conference on Tuesday and as usual, Alex and I recap the main talking points that came out of that session with the media. We discuss Tomlin's thoughts on the two starting tackles, Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu, potential defensive line adjustments, the play of QB Aaron Rodgers in Week 1, and the usage of RB Kenneth Gainwell to start the 2025 regular season. Several other talking points from Tuesday are also discussed as well throughout this show and Alex and I both discuss Steelers DT Keeanu Benton and his play in the base defense and potential future at the nose tackle position. With the all-22 tape from the Week 1 game against the New York Jets now fully digested, Alex and I both deliver our additional thoughts from Sunday's win against the Jets when it comes to the offense, defense, and special teams. We pass along several advanced stats as well as personnel usage from the game against the Jets as part of us recapping what stood out from the all-22 tape of that Week 1 contest. This 92-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted, and we close things by answering a few emails that we recently received from listeners. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices.
