Noam Wallenberg mixes it up. He's all about creative limitations, be it tracking with the “wrong mics” or mixing a live record like a studio recording. We dig into the music he's made with acts like Vulfpeck and The Fearless Flyers, what exactly tape does to music, and how taking the unconventional route can get you to beautifully unexpected places. For 30% off your first year of DistroKid to share your music with the world click DistroKid.com/vip/lovemusicmoreSubscribe to this pod's blog on Substack to receive deeper dives on the regular

Singer-songwriter May Erlewine’s new album offers a different side of an artist known for warm, intimate lyrics and bespoke acoustic arrangements. But the qualities that draw fans into May Erlewine’s music are still here, just with a less-compliant exterior. What It Takes is the second album she’s made with friend and producer Theo Katzman, of the post-funk band Vulfpeck. Erlewine has been thinking about the chaos of the moment and the moral choices she feels compelled to make. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You're back. I'm back.GOTTA ASK YOU THIS:Instead of giving up on getting an audience to see your art because you'd rather scoop your cat's litter box for all of eternity than research SEO keywords for another second, What if “making content” felt more like divulging secrets to your best friend? What if content marketing was as easy for you as pickleball is for Serena? What if your content (non-derogatory) loaded people onto a proverbial express train to your work and created a scene even Warhol would envy?If making content felt fun, would you finally put yourself out there with your full chest? In today's episode, I'm going to give you a total reframe on content. And before I lose you, here's what this episode is NOT:* It's not about lack mindset!* It's not about believing in yourself!* It's not about changing your self-perception!* It's not about your fear of being seen!Don't get me wrong. I love to talk about those things, too. But that's not this episode.Today, I'm sharing one crucial shift in the actual act of making content that will make you feel like a celebrity multi-millionaire infused with their daily vitamin IV drip. In other words: invigorated.IN TODAY'S EPISODE, we'll answer these questions:* What qualifies as content and what qualifies as art?* What is the function of content for indie artists?* What are the different quality levels of content that artists should focus on?* How do you make boring “content marketing” into something more dynamic and easier to produce?* What are some examples of artists who are using this strategy and how does it work across industries?* Can content be part of your body of work without selling out or copying everyone else?* Will your art suffer if you focus on content?AND DON'T MISS:More Lore Less Bore, from the Twelfth House+ Podcast (A good place to start if you've never written a manifesto.)Vulfpeck's website. The exceptionally talented guitarist, songwriter, and producer, Cory Wong, sat down with us for a fun and enlightening episode of "Convos on the Corner". Many of you may know him from his sit-in with DMB at Madison Square Garden last fall, but there is so much more to learn about Cory and how he got to where he is today. Known for his infectious energy, rhythmic grooves, and boundless creativity, he is not only a solo artist with a dozen studio albums (so far), touring member of the funk group Vulfpeck, full-time member of The Fearless Flyers, but also an accomplished collaborator with greats such as Jon Batiste and Dave Koz, a YouTube variety show host, a podcast host, and more. In this episode, we discuss his unique approach to music, his influences, and all the details surrounding that night with DMB at MSG including how big of a fan of the band he truly is, and we may have snuck in a little Goose talk too. Cory is truly one of a kind. We had such a blast chatting with him and cannot thank him enough for his time. The COGS Pod Shop Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this BFE (beer-free episode), Barry, Abigail, and special guest Ian Rees (previously interviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod) discuss Ian's Virtual Jukebox submission, Diorama by Silverchair. Barry continually references Silverchair's debut album Frogstomp (not also known as Frogstamp). Abigail and Barry both compared the oeuvre of this album to that of Astoria by Marianas Trench, discussed on Cascadia (Marianas Trench and Cascade Brewing), and Electro-Shock Blues by Eels, discussed on Owlectro-Shock Brews [Eels and Dangerous Minds Brewing Co.). Silverchair worked with composer Van Dyke Parks on this album. In a twist we could not have predicted, we discovered some relevant information about Parks after recording that did not come up in our conversation. Per Wikipedia, Parks wrote “‘City of Lights,' ‘It's a “B” Movie,' ‘Cutting Edge,' and ‘Worthless,' all of which were used in the film The Brave Little Toaster, directed by Jerry Rees.[citation needed].” Well, we'll be the confirmatory citation - Jerry Rees is Ian's dad! However, during the episode, we did discuss Parks' work with The Beach Boys on their unfinished album Smile and his musically eclectic album Song Cycle. Did you catch Barry's weekly Coriolis force joke? Barry compared the guitar sound in Angie by The Rolling Stones to that in World Upon Your Shoulders. Abigail pointed out that had this not been a BFE, Green Bench would have been the perfect brewery to pair with Silverchair. We discussed the trend of including a hidden track after a long silence on a CD (in reference to “Outro,” the hidden track after After All These Years). We referenced I Have Seen the Rain (feat. James T. Moore) by P!nk, Her Majesty by The Beatles, and Mercy, Sweet Moan by The Black Crowes as comparative examples. Reddit has also discussed this issue at length. Wikipedia maintains a list of albums containing a hidden track. After minimal research, we believe the mysterious album Ian referenced with multiple silent tracks was Sleepify by Vulfpeck. We once again plugged Matty C's multimedia project What Am I Making. We closed by playing Ian's new single, Say Goodbye. Watch the trippy music video! Say Goodbye is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Ian has an abundance of music available on Spotify and YouTube. We especially recommend Panic Induced Love (the album we reviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod), his Building A Song Series, and his Bo Burnham-inspired video “Why Do I Eat So Much Cheese?”. Up next… A Fever You Can't Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco Ian also randomly selected our next Jukebox episode, Professional Rapper by Lil Dicky, submitted by Dinos Korominas. This episode is scheduled to drop on July 12, 2024. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. While plenty of songwriters are happy to give a post-mortem review of how they write a song, the actual process happens behind closed doors. What goes through their heads while they decide on a specific word choice? Who hasn't wished to be a fly on the wall while professional musicians hack together the pieces that make our favorite songs? That's the experience of Before Your Very Ears, a new podcast hosted by guitarists Sean Watkins and Peter Harper. On each episode, Watkins and Harper are joined by a different guest musician, and together, the three of them have one goal before the mics stop rolling: They have to write an original song. Before Your Very Ears is a fun, insightful exploration of the mysterious, ever-elusive “Songwriting Process,” and a real-time demonstration of the twists and turns that result in the music we love. This debut episode features Vulfpeck founder and guitarist Theo Katzman. The trio starts with a gentle acoustic idea, envisioned as a sleepy-time lullaby. But as each player introduces their perspective on the concept, it soon turns into a profound, heart-felt meditation on death and grief, and what it means to lose someone.Step right up, and witness the creative brain in motion Before Your Very Ears! This episode is sponsored by Berklee Online: https://online.berklee.edu/Join our Patreon: http://patreon.com/beforeyourveryears
Holden and Nate talk about the funk band Vulfpeck
Today we are joined by Erin, the soulful and extremely talented vocalist from RVA's Erin & The Wildfire. The band started out as four college friends in Charlottesville, VA making music just for the fun of it. Today they have grown into a flourishing decade long musical experience with an idie-pop flair with influences from Emily King, D'Angelo, YEBBA, Vulfpeck, and Donny Hathaway. The band also includes Ryan Lipps on guitar, Nick Quillen on drums, Matt Woods on bass and Stephen Roach on keys.Erin & The Wildfire create their own music with deeply personal lyrics that mainly focus on Erin's journey with struggles with body acceptance and self-love but also touch on climate change, fighting the patriarchy and more. The band strives to make their shows a safe space for all ages and kinds of people.Their second full-length album, Touchy Feely was released April 1, 2022 and recorded in the Summer of 2021, after nearly a year and a half of virtual songwriting and collaboration during the global pandemic. The new release, named one of Style Weekly's most-anticipated local albums of 2022, was produced by acclaimed songwriter and producer Matthew E. White (Natalie Prass). The meticulous production, impeccable songwriting, and sensual vocals are present as ever on an album that polishes the signature style introduced by their popular single “Shape” in 2020.E&TW have also made appearances at some of the largest festivals on the East Coast including Suwannee Rising, LOCKN', FloydFest, CMJ, RoosterWalk, and more.Support Erin & The Wildfire:https://www.erinandthewildfire.com/https://www.instagram.com/erinandthewildfire/https://www.facebook.com/ErinandtheWildfire/https://twitter.com/ErinAndWildfirehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA8j8JBYzPOKZrrB7xwweRQhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/erin-the-wildfire/727140636https://soundcloud.com/erinandthewildfirehttps://www.tiktok.com/@erinandthewildfirehttps://open.spotify.com/artist/03NHhY1mdWC3Hf9uJEnomj?si=W34dC8EkR0uy3YYgGx2z3QOur sponsor:Maya's Belly Dancing
This time on Wong Notes, Cory is joined by his Vulfpeck and Fearless Flyers copilot Joe Dart. Wong doesn't waste any time, diving in by asking Dart, by now renowned as a modern bass wizard with flawless fundamentals, how he developed he signature “voice” on the bass. As Dart explains, it came from listening to players who had their own distinct “voice,” who sound like “they're singing a part within the song,” he says. These “philosophers of the low-end,” like Flea, imprinted the value of total intention and feeling in every note, as if any single one could be your last.Dart throws it back to his first bass—a Samick—and remembers how it's ridiculously high action was like weight training for the rest of his career. He still likes his strings suspended up higher than most, which allows his “brute force” slapping. Wong and Dart trade notes on practice regimes, and Dart offers advice for young players: Learn your scales, sure, but most importantly, “play with as many different people as you can.” Plus, Dart breaks down his differing approaches to instrumental and vocal tracks.Later on, the bandmates ponder the mental trap of the social media comparison game, and wonder at how algorithms impact which music rises to the top of the heap. What does Dart hope to remembered for? With any luck, he'll have works as iconic as his grandfather's, Israel Baker, whose violin playing you'll recognize not just from collabs with Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, but some of the most famous film scores and TV show theme songs.Listen to the full episode here: https://bit.ly/WongNotesGet 30% off your first year of DistroKid by going here: http://distrokid.com/vip/corywongVisit Joe Dart: Hit us up: wongnotes@premierguitar.comVisit Cory: https://www.corywongmusic.comVisit Premier Guitar: http://premierguitar.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/wongnotespodIG:

Her remarkable prowess on the bass guitar soon landed her a number of high-profile television gigs spanning America's Got Talent to backing up pop star Julia Michaels on TODAY. By the end of her senior year at NYU, Rykman's virtuoso talent and infectious spirit saw her invited to join pianist Marco Benevento's band (as recommended by Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz), with whom she performed countless shows including dates with Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more. Rykman soon formed her own namesake band, accompanied by Adam November (guitar, loopers, effects) and Chris Corsico (drums). She quickly earned a reputation as a mesmerizing, unmissable live act, lighting up an array of international stages with headline sets, show-stealing festival performances (including Bonnaroo, Peach Music Festival, and Sweetwater 420 Fest), shows alongside Khruangbin, Guster, and The Disco Biscuits (among others), and recent appearances sitting in with the 8G Band on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. That same spellbinding power was soon captured on a series of independent singles, including “Elevator” and the million-streaming “Plants,” both of which have now been newly enhanced for Rykman's debut album, JOYRIDE. Written and recorded with childhood friend, producer Gabe Monro, the album serves as a vivid canvas for Rykman's vibrant expression and chameleonic songcraft. JOYRIDE features Trey Anastasio as co-producer and featured musician, contributing guitar on five of the album's nine tracks. Multi instrumentalist singer-songwriter Theo Katzman (known for his work with the funk band Vulfpeck) bought a van from a teenager in California and drove across the country, settling in the woods of Michigan where he set up a studio, started a label, and got down to the business of writing a new record. Along the way, he discovered the Wim Hof breathing and ice bathing techniques and came out with a transformed idea of “the self” and his own motivations, and decided that he wanted to make records with as few technological interventions as possible. The result of this journey is his latest record Be The Wheel which he released recently on his 10 Good Songs label. Here he talks about the process of making that record, as well as thoughts on artificial intelligence, psilocybin, social media, touring, and honesty in songwriting.
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Ongoing Concept over Zoom video! We The band — brothers Dawson Scholz [vocals, guitar], Kyle Scholz [vocals, keys, percussion], and Parker Scholz [drums] along with TJ Nichols [vocals, bass], and Andy Crateau [vocals, guitar] — have released their fourth album Again, out via Solid State Records. Not only is this the first taste of new music from the band since 2017 but it also marks the return of the original lineup."'Unwanted Again' was one of our favorites to write and record," states Dawson. "Being fans of bands like Cory Wong, Dirty Loops, Don Broco, and Vulfpeck, we found ourselves incorporating a lot of groovy elements to this album, and this song really showcases that. It was also fun to bounce vocals back between TJ and I. For longtime fans of our band, we added some subtle references to our song 'Unwanted'; not only in the song, but in the music video as well. Being our second single and coming after a heavy hitter like 'Prisoner Again,' I think this song showcases the variety we put into this album."The Ongoing Concept emerged with the now-seminal Saloon back in 2013. On its heels, fan favorite Handmade bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chart and Top Christian Albums Chart in addition to cracking the Top 30 of the Top Independent Albums Chart. In its wake, Kyle, Parker, and TJ departed, leaving Dawson as the sole original member for Places in 2017. As The Ongoing Concept went dormant, the group's catalog continued to react with listeners as the likes of "Cover Girl" clocked over a million Spotify streams and counting. After a period of quiet, communication mended between Dawson and his brothers Kyle and Parker. Between careers, marriages, and kids, they kicked around the idea of playing together once more."We'd been playing music since we were six-years-old," notes Dawson."We lived and breathed the same band together. It's crazy, because I didn't know my brothers outside of music. Taking a break for a few years, we found who we were as normal people and embraced other interests. It was super healthy for all of us. One day, we were hanging out, and I said, 'You know I've been working on some little skeletons for songs,' and it made sense. The only reason we got back together was because we had our time apart."They self-produced Again and took their time. The Ongoing Concept integrated "lyrics and Easter Eggs" from previous albums into the record's framework, embodying the title quite literally. We want to hear from you!
