This time, we tackle the solo works of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen (aka Steely Dan), and to do that, I brought on someone new to talk about them, Mr. Andy Schaal.Andy and me discussed Fagen's The NIghtfly, Kamakiriad, Morph The Cat, and Sunken Condos, as well as Becker's 11 Tracks Of Whack and Circus Money.  A lot of fun was had as we discussed the musical and lyrical quirkiness of the solo works of the duo who comprised Steely Dan.  There are some great songs within these works and any fan of music would be advised to listen and check these out.

Here comes that Santa Ana wind again, blowing us right into the slightly skewed world of Steely Dan.It was never a question whether Strong Songs would do a Steely Dan episode, it was more a question of which song to focus on. In the end, Kirk chose "Babylon Sisters," a culmination of the band's incredible 1970s run that exemplifies Fagen and Becker's brand of pristine, laser-focused groove. It's also arguably the definitive recording of Bernard Purdie's signature Purdie Shuffle.Written by: Walter Becker and Donald FagenAlbum: Gaucho (1980)Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | SpotifyALSO FEATURED/DISCUSSED:“Sloop John B,” Bahamian folk song as recorded by The Beach Boys on Pet Sounds, 1966“Papa Was a Rollin' Stone” by The Temptations from Law of the Land, 1972“Cousin Dupree” by Becker/Fagen from Two Against Nature, 2000“Reelin' in the years” by Donald Fagen from Can't Buy a Thrill, 1972“Rikki Don't Lose That Number” by Fagen/Becker from Prezel Logic, 1974“Black Friday” by Becker/Fagen from Katy Lied, 1975"Peg," "Aja," and "Home at Last" by Becker/Fagen from Aja, 1977“Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)” by Louis Prima performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra, 1936“Cissy Strut” by The Meters from The Meters, 1969"Rosanna" by David Paich as recorded by Toto on Toto IV, with Jeff Porcaro on drums (and Tom Scott on alto sax!)Rob Brown's Purdie Shuffle tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g41Ab8iDaD0OUTRO SOLOIST: Kyle MolitorKyle is a Portland-based trombonist who plays in all sorts of bands, and was also featured on the year three Strong Songs theme msuic. I'm talking about their classic tune "Hey Nineteen".They had that AM sound on a lazy afternoon you turn it on and you can hear that smooth jazzy guitar riff. It's like the sun breaking through the clouds Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They knew how to create those lush arrangements, rock, jazz, and pop into adelicious sonic treat."Hey19" has got that laid-back groove easy on the ears with lyrics that spin a tale in youthful exuberance. It was in those days before life got a little too serious. It pulls you in, makes you remember those golden moments of youth, and brings all that sweet jazz influence to the forefront. And let's not forget about that irresistible chorus when they sing ‘Hey 19”. it's like a magnet for your heart inviting you to reminisce and relax. You can almost picture yourself lounging at a backyard barbecue sipping on something cool while the laid-back harmonies float the air.Hey 19 is a group by Steely Dan from their 1980 album “Gaucho”. The lyrics are about a man in his early 30s contemplating a romantic encounter with a 19-year-old with whom he has nothing in common."Hey19" Pete at number 10 on the billboard hot 100 chart in early 1981, number 11 on the adult contemporary chart, and number 68 on the R&B singles chart. With a chart run of 19 weeks Hey 19 is tied with “Peg”and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" for being there longest running chart.I'm Gail Nobles, and you're listening to the Pod AM show on the CAT BEAR - a show about AM radio memories of music.

On this episode of One Song, actor, comedian and musician Jon Benjamin (Archer, Bob's Burgers) joins Diallo and LUXXURY to break down one of Steely Dan's most beloved, jazz-infused songs from 1977, “Peg.” They discuss the lengths the band's core duo – Walter Becker and Donald Fagen – went to achieve their vision for this song and its album 'Aja' (it took 40 musicians!), and why it may be “one of the strangest hits to ever grace the mainstream.” (Pitchfork's words, not ours.)

Misadventures in Music with Ian Prowse & Mick Ord

Kirkby's finest, China Crisis, are the guests in this month's Misadventures in Music podcast with Ian Prowse and Mick Ord.  Eddie Lundon and Gary Daly founded the band in 1979 and notched up a string of hits in the album and singles charts in the 1980's. They're still going as strong as ever and regularly touring the UK and Europe.  Their candid tales of working with Walter Becker of Steely Dan and supporting and 'socialising' with David Bowie are the stuff of legend. Their musical influences might raise a few eyebrows (and smiles) as well. Oh yes, their sense of humour is as sharp as it ever was as you'll discover when you listen to this episode of Misadventures in Music.

In this episode we welcome Fast Show legend Simon Day to downtown Hammersmith and ask him about his musical passions and the immortal Life Of Rock With Brian Pern. We start with our guest's misspent youth in south-east London, where he frequently saw bands such as Dr. Feelgood and local lads Squeeze and even fronted his own punk combo Simon & the Virgins. We hear about his early days on the standup circuit and his close associations with Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer and the gang that coalesced around The Fast Show. From there we discuss the genesis of his "prog'n'roll" alter ego Brian Pern and his affectionate lampooning of Peter Gabriel. Clips from a 2003 audio interview with Steely Dan prompt an in-depth conversation about Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker. During this, Simon tells us how he first fell for the arch duo and we collectively compare notes on some of the group's greatest songs and albums. After a brief mention of featured writer Dorian Lynskey and his new book Everything Must Go, Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and Beatles hairdresser Leslie Cavendish before Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on M. Life Sentence Issued for Austell Murder Convict Investigation Shifts: South Cobb Fatal Crash Now Not Considered Hit and Run Cobb Sheriff Earns Prestigious 'Triple Crown' Accreditation Recognition"   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CUofGA STORY 1: Man Sentenced to Life for Austell Murder Douglasville resident, Sony Lebrun, 37, has been handed a life sentence without parole for a murder case dating back to August 2021. The Cobb County jury found him guilty on multiple charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession. Lebrun's conviction relates to the fatal shooting of Eric Stone, a consequence of road rage at the Premier Lane Apartments in Austell. Witnesses pinpointed Lebrun as the culprit and his presence at the crime scene was confirmed by GPS cell phone data. Cobb Superior Court Judge Sonja Brown presided over his sentencing, commending the diligent efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors in the case. Cobb County Assistant District Attorneys Jay Winkler and Donna Merrell represented the prosecution for District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr.'s office. Broady underscored the importance of this conviction in reinforcing community safety. STORY 2: Fatal Crash in South Cobb No Longer Investigated as a Hit and Run The investigation into a fatal crash on Veterans Memorial Highway has taken a turn. Authorities have stopped their hunt for a black SUV previously thought to be involved in the incident. Instead, the collision has now been attributed to a motorcycle operated by Christopher Johnson hitting pedestrian Melissa Winslow. Winslow sustained severe injuries as a result of the accident. Tragically, Johnson did not survive and was declared dead at the scene. Initially, it was believed that Winslow had been trapped under the SUV, but further investigation clarified that the SUV's driver had stopped to inspect the damage before leaving the site. The unfortunate event transpired when Winslow attempted to cross the highway. Johnson's motorcycle hit her, causing her to be thrown into the westbound lanes. The case continues to be under scrutiny by local authorities. STORY 3: Cobb Sheriff Recognized for 'Triple Crown' Accreditation Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens recently received recognition at the Georgia Senate for a significant achievement by his office. His department has secured accreditations from the three most prestigious law enforcement credentialing authorities in the U.S - the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, the American Correctional Association, and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. STORY 7: With Brad Wheeler's support, Tre' Hutchins Hopes to Advance Cobb School Safety Plan In the wake of a shooting incident at McEachern High School, Leroy Tre' Hutchins, a member of the Cobb County Board of Education, has put forth a comprehensive school safety plan. This proposal has managed to secure a rare consensus across party lines. Key elements of the plan include deploying school support officers, procuring technology to detect weapons at events and within school premises, and conducting a financial analysis. Hutchins aspires to utilize surplus funds along with revenue generated from the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax to offset the costs associated with these measures. While certain safety initiatives are already underway, Hutchins underscores the importance of an all-encompassing strategy to ensure student safety remains paramount. The potential ratification of this plan would mark a significant stride towards addressing safety concerns in Cobb County schools. Break 1: TOM WAGES   STORY 1: Gwinnett Police Looking For Missing Teen Last Seen Leaving School Three Weeks Ago The Gwinnett County Police Department is actively searching for Eva Virginia Cambron, a 15-year-old student from Lilburn, who has been missing for three weeks. She was last seen departing from McClure Science High School and was spotted running down Club Drive in the direction of Shackleford Road. Cambron's disappearance was reported through the Gwinnett County Public Schools Police Department. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a grey hoodie, dark pants, and light-colored shoes. She stands 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighs approximately 115 pounds, and has long, dark hair and brown eyes. Authorities are urging anyone with information on Cambron's whereabouts to come forward. You can contact the Gwinnett County Police or provide information anonymously via Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta. STORY 2: Georgia House Bill Would Add Demographic Diversity To Invest Georgia Fund Selection Criteria State Representative Darshun Kendrick, representing Lithonia, is championing House Bill 1138 with the goal of broadening the demographic reach of the Invest Georgia Fund. The fund operates as a "fund of funds", directing state resources into venture capital firms which subsequently invest in local businesses. The proposed legislation by Kendrick introduces a new criterion to the fund's objectives - promoting investment diversity that mirrors Georgia's demographic diversity. The objective behind this initiative is to stimulate economic growth and generate job opportunities for a wider range of Georgians. Presently, the bill is being deliberated by the Georgia House Economic Development and Tourism Committee. STORY 3: Gwinnett Lawmaker Files Freedom to Drive Bill In a move geared towards inclusivity and public safety, State Senator Nabilah Islam Parkes, representing Duluth, has tabled Senate Bill 478, also known as the Freedom To Drive Act. This legislation aims to extend driver's license access to non-U.S. citizens in Georgia. The bill proposes the provision of government-issued identification and driving authorization cards to immigrants, independent of their immigration status. The objective is to legally enable immigrants to drive, thereby enhancing public safety and fostering a more inclusive environment. This measure also seeks to allow them to contribute more effectively to Georgia's economy and societal fabric. Currently under review by the Senate's Public Safety Committee, the bill suggests an eight-year valid license for noncitizens and ensures non-discrimination during the application process. A variety of documents, including school IDs, employment IDs, and immigration-related papers like DACA approval letters, are deemed acceptable for this purpose. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back. Break 2: INGLES 6   STORY 4: Georgia Power objections cast long shadow over state lawmakers' efforts to expand solar energy In Georgia, there is a growing call for the expansion of community solar initiatives, which proponents argue could lower overall energy costs and broaden access to clean energy. However, these proposals face opposition from Georgia Power, the state's largest electric utility. The legislative measures under consideration would permit developers to construct small solar arrays within Georgia Power's jurisdiction. This would allow customers to subscribe to a share of the electricity produced by these arrays and subsequently receive credits on their utility bills. Advocates insist that this initiative would particularly benefit renters and homeowners with roof areas unsuitable for solar panels due to shading. Georgia Power counters this argument by suggesting that such a program could result in cost shifting to other consumers and potentially lead to confusion among ratepayers. Despite these concerns, supporters stress the urgency of expanding clean energy options in light of escalating energy costs and an anticipated energy deficit. For these bills to progress, they need to pass at least one legislative chamber by the deadline on February 29. STORY 5: Partnership Gwinnett Recognizes Local Companies For Creating New Jobs In a significant boost to the local economy, eight firms in Gwinnett County collectively generated over 1,500 new jobs and made an investment close to $486 million last year, according to Partnership Gwinnett. The companies, which include Leuze Electronic Inc., NEMA Inc., and Northeast Georgia Health System, were recognized for their contributions at the Gwinnett Company Reception. This event is dedicated to honoring businesses that have chosen to expand within Gwinnett or select it as the location for their new establishments. Deven Cason of Partnership Gwinnett highlighted how these companies are vital contributors to Gwinnett County's economic growth and community development. In addition to acknowledging corporate contributions, Partnership Gwinnett also uses this occasion to recognize the efforts of nonprofit partners such as the American Cancer Society and Junior Achievement. Looking ahead, Partnership Gwinnett is preparing to host the Movers and Makers Awards in May, an event designed to celebrate the manufacturing and logistics industry within Gwinnett. STORY 6: Hooper-Renwick Speaker Series To Feature Author Victoria Christoper Murray on Feb. 22 The Hooper-Renwick School, nestled in Lawrenceville and recognized as the only Black public high school in Gwinnett County prior to its consolidation with the Gwinnett County School System, is set to be transformed into a spacious 25,000-square-foot library. The project, which is financed by the Hooper-Renwick Memorial Programming Fund & Endowment with significant backing from Peach State Credit Union, seeks to uphold and celebrate the school's rich history. In addition to this transformative project, a speaker series has been organized to honor the experiences and stories of Hooper-Renwick attendees. This series will kick off on February 22 at the Lawrenceville Arts Center with Victoria Christoper Murray, a celebrated author known for her New York Times bestselling works. The event will feature insightful discussions led by Murray and fellow author ReShonda Tate, as well as Hooper-Renwick alumni Joyce Moore and Dr. John Maxey. STORY 7: Georgia House votes to expand paid parental leave for state workers In a significant move, the Georgia House of Representatives has decisively passed House Bill 1010, a measure designed to enhance paid parental leave for state workers. Under the terms of the bill, the allocation of paid leave would be increased from the current 120 hours to 240 hours, equivalent to six weeks. This provision would be applicable following the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.   With a vote of 153-11, the bill received substantial backing. Speaker Jon Burns underscored the crucial role such legislation plays in supporting working families. Meanwhile, Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones stressed the importance of this expanded benefit in attracting and retaining employees.   Following this approval by the House, the bill will now proceed to the state Senate for further deliberation. We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: HENRY CO SHERIFFS OFFICE Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. The duo is accused of pilfering over $100,000 worth of merchandise from Target stores across four states. Their charges encompass violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. From September 1 to October 17, the women reportedly stole a variety of products ranging from skincare items and electronic devices to baby formula. Their alleged modus operandi included concealing goods in boxes and utilizing the aid of juveniles and accomplices. Hornea is now detained in Cherokee County jail, while Ionita has been apprehended elsewhere. It's also worth noting that Hornea is currently sought after in three different jurisdictions within Alabama. STORY 2: Cherokee County Urges Drivers Not to Use Neighborhood as Detour The intersection at Fate Conn Road and Heard Road, located near Canton, will remain closed until March 1 to facilitate roundabout construction. In response, Cherokee County officials are actively advising motorists not to use the adjacent Park Village Neighborhood as a shortcut. Official detour signs have been erected, directing traffic towards Lower Bethany Road and Old Highway 5. This initiative is designed to maintain safety for drivers, local residents, and the construction crew working on the project. For any queries or additional information about the detour, individuals are encouraged to reach out to the Cherokee County Roadway Capital Program at 678-493-6077. STORY 3: Cherokee County School Board Taps New Superintendent In a recent development, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Davis has been officially appointed as the new Superintendent of the Cherokee County School District (CCSD). The school board's decision, taken on February 15, 2024, was a close one, with a 4-3 vote in favor of her appointment. Davis, who has been serving as the Superintendent of Henry County Schools, emerged as the sole candidate for the position on January 31. Her selection, however, has drawn varied responses from board members and the community at large. Advocates for Davis highlight her proven ability to enhance student achievement, while critics voice apprehensions about her leadership style and previous performance. Regardless of these differing views, the school board moved forward with the appointment, reinforcing the meticulousness of their selection process. Davis is expected to assume her position soon, taking over from the retiring Superintendent Brian Hightower. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. STORY 5: Hufstetler's Tax Cap Bill Clears Georgia Senate The Georgia State Senate has officially passed the Save Our Homes bill, SB 349, with a significant majority vote of 42 to 7. This legislation, sponsored by Sen. Chuck Hufstetler, is designed to cap annual property tax increases at 3%, enhance valuation procedures, and offer much-needed relief to homeowners. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has been a vocal advocate for this tax reform, addressing long-standing issues related to local property taxes. If this bill receives approval from the House and gets signed into law by Gov. Kemp, it will necessitate a statewide vote. Despite the bill's progress, it faces opposition, notably from the Georgia School Boards Association, which has raised concerns about how the tax cap could limit the financial flexibility of school boards. If the bill navigates these remaining obstacles successfully, it is expected to feature on the ballot this coming November. Steely Dan – "Pretzel Logic"

SWR1 Meilensteine - Alben die Geschichte machten

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2024 70:52

A year ago, I began what will unfortunately be a regular series of these programs from now on…it's an annual look back on the musicians we lost in the previous year… Rock star deaths have been on our mind since late 2015 when Scott Weiland of the Stone Temple Pilots died, followed a few weeks later by Lemmy of Motorhead…then the floodgates opened in 2016: Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey of the eagles, both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake from Emerson Lake and Palmer, and George Michael—just to name a few… And since then, it seems we hear about a rock star death every couple of weeks…Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Gregg Allman, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, Chuck Mosley of Faith No More, Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode, Mark E. Smith of The Fall, Charlie Watts The Rolling Stones…it's been a lot to take in… Some of these deaths have been of natural causes, disease, and old age…others have involved drugs, alcohol, years of hard living, misadventure, and suicide… Here's the hard truth: rock has been around for about seventy years…many of the people who have provided us with our favourite music and some of the greatest songs of all time are reaching the end of their lives… No one is getting any younger...and over the next decade, we're going to lose some of the personalities who have always been with there for us over the last 30, 40, 50, or even 60 years... With that grim reality in mind, I think we need to continue with an annual retrospective at those whom we've lost in the last 12 months…they may be gone, but we need to recognize and celebrate their contributions to the world of music...this is 2023 in memoriam... A literary and visual exploration of the songs of Steely Dan. Steely Dan's songs are exercises in fictional world-building. No one else in the classic-rock canon has conjured a more vivid cast of rogues and heroes, creeps and schmucks, lovers and dreamers and cold-blooded operators--or imbued their characters with so much humanity. Pulling from history, lived experience, pulp fiction, the lore of the counterculture, and their own darkly comic imaginations, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker summoned protagonists who seemed like fully formed people with complicated pasts, scars they don't talk about, delusions and desires and memories they can't shake. The Nightfly is the debut solo album from Donald Fagen.  Fagen and his Steely Dan partner Walter Becker had released the Gaucho album in late 1980, and Becker was having a lot of trouble.  His girlfriend died of a drug overdose in their apartment, and he was sued for several million dollars.  Shortly after that he was hit by a taxi, which shattered his leg.  Steely Dan disbanded in 1981, and Becker moved to Maui.  Fagen wanted “The Nightfly” to be autobiographical, and without the irony and biting nature of Steely Dan.  There is a lot of adolescence and innocence in these songs, reflecting back on Fagen's time growing up.  The album is also one of the first to be recorded entirely in digital.  Steely Dan had tried this approach fo“Gaucho,” but it didn't work out and they reverted to analog.  Audiophiles gravitate to The Nightfly, and EQ Magazine ranks it as one of the top 10 Best Recorded Albums of All Time, up there with The Beatles' “Sergeant Peppers” and The Beach Boys' “Pet Sounds.”Donald Fagan had problems with depression after recording “The Nightfly,” and largely disappeared from the music scene through the rest of the 80's.  Fagan said in 2006 that he hasn't listened to "The Nightfly" since making it.  However, he did record two other albums which are considered to form "The Nightfly Trilogy," including Kamakiriad" from 1993 and "Morph the Cat" from 2006.  There would also be a reunion of Steely Dan later on.Bruce presents this jazzy album for this week's episode. I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)This lead single is also the track that leads off the album.  "I.G.Y." stands for International Geophysical Year, which was a project that lasted between July 1957 and December 1958.  It encompassed eleven earth science projects and included collaboration between East and West.  The song reflects the positivity of that time and collaboration.  The song was released in September 1982 and reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the end of November. The NightflyThis track imagines a late night DJ named Lester who plays jazz on WJAZ out of Baton Rouge, and also takes calls from conspiracy theorists.  is about a spiritual quest.  While not released as a single, this song did receive some airplay on FM stations in the 80's.Ruby BabyAlthough heavily arranged with close harmonies by Fagen, this is a cover song originally performed by the Drifters in 1956.  A number of artists have covered it over time, including Dion (number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962), Billy "Crash Craddock, Del Shannon, Mitch Ryder, and Bobby Darin.New FrontierThis fun single did not break into the top 40, but it was a frequent video on the then-new MTV channel.  The idea of the song is that an adolescent boy is bringing a girl over to his parents' bomb shelter for a good time.  "Yes, we're going to have a wing ding..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:It Might Be You by Stephen Bishop (from the motion picture "Tootsie" )Dustin Hoffman stars in this cross-dressing romance comedy about an actor disguising himself as a woman to land a job. STAFF PICKS:Steppin' Out by Joe JacksonRob starts the staff picks with a song inspired by Jackson's time in New York City.  The song reflects the excitement of a drive around town, and hit number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It is off the album "Night and Day," which reflects New York City during the day on side 1, and the City during the night on side 2.Mexican Radio by Wall of VoodooWayne's staff pick is a weird one.  This new wave act describes listening to the broadcasts of high-wattage unregulated Mexican radio stations whose signals were strong enough to be picked up in small town U.S.A.  Wall of Voodoo's $15,000 video would be on constant repeat on MTV.Maneater by Hall & Oates Lynch brings us a big Hall & Oates hit that spent four weeks at number 1 on the charts.  The song describes a woman who is bad news, only looking for money.  The video features a live panther, that got loose in the rafters of the set at one point, prompting a hasty retreat from Darryl Hall.   The sax part is played by Charles "Mr. Casual" DeChant, who also appears in the video during his solo. She Sheila by The ProducersBruce finishes up the staff picks with Atlanta's own The Producers.  This is the big single off the band's second album "You Make the Heat."  It went to number 48 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, and alternates between an ethereal synth part and a high energy New Wave sound. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Bonzo's Montreux by Led ZeppelinJohn Bonham's live drum solo closes out this week's podcast.

Alex Pappademas and Joan LeMay, "Quantum Criminals": Exploring Steely Dan Characters and Artistic CollaborationIn this episode of "Unlocking Your World of Creativity," host Mark Stinson delves into the fascinating world of storytelling, art, music, and character development with author Alex Pappademas and artist Joan LeMay, the creative duo behind the book "Quantum Criminals: Ramblers Wild Gamblers. Another Soul Survivors from the Songs of Steely Dan." The book explores the rich tapestry of characters found within the songs of the legendary band Steely Dan.The conversation begins with Alex discussing the genesis of the book and how Joan's idea to base it around characters transformed the project. Their collaboration, guided by a massive spreadsheet of 160 characters created by Joan, allowed them to explore the extensive catalog of Steely Dan's characters and bring them to life in a unique way. Alex highlights how the character-based approach enhanced the writing process, adding depth and humanity to their portrayal of the band's history.Joan discusses her artistic process and how her lifelong fandom of Steely Dan influenced her visual interpretations of the characters. With a penchant for high chroma and psychedelic aesthetics, her vibrant paintings captured the essence of the colorful and sometimes enigmatic characters. The collaborative nature of the project brought a new dynamic to both Alex and Joan's creative processes, providing support, encouragement, and a fresh perspective. The interview also delves into the research behind the characters and the extensive exploration undertaken by Alex. While the band members, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, didn't provide much information about the characters, Alex's research led him down intriguing rabbit holes, uncovering fascinating connections and stories. He shares examples such as the inspiration behind "Kid Charlemagne" and the story of Sayoko Yamaguchi, the model featured on the cover of Steely Dan's album "Asia."Throughout the conversation, the evolution of Steely Dan's characters over time is explored, with Alex noting that the reunion albums allowed for a clearer understanding of the individual songwriting contributions of Fagen and Becker. The duo's sensibility shifts and a touch of sentimentality emerges in their later work, which can be heard in songs like "Shame About Me."Highlight Quotes:· "I think that was what was exciting about it because I, this started out, I was going to write a Steely Dan book before Joan came into the picture. But the idea to base it around characters was an idea that Joan had." - Alex Pappademas· "Joan made a giant spreadsheet. At the beginning of this process that had 160 characters on it, which is like a Robert Altman level of character." - Alex Pappademas· "I prior to diving into this I've always painted in a very high chroma way. All of these are gush paintings that are 18 by 24 or nine by 12. And I I've always. I've always painted slightly psychedelic in, in terms of pallet. So it it was an easy, it was an easy application of that natural tendency here, for sure." - Joan LeMay· "So I when this project started to I had thought about I, I'd start, I had started. Making a fanzine called Danze, where I was going to depict every single named character in the entire Steely Dan universe." - Joan LeMay· "I think for years, Several friends and I who are Steely Dan fans have been like, oh, they're such a major dude. As a, as, just as a colloquial way to refer to somebody referring to the song,...

The Steely Dan renaissance (aka the Danaissance) shows no sign of abating in 2023, with good reason: it is clear now that history is the slow process of discovering that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have always been several steps ahead of the rest of us. This is a band that gave us memes before memes were a thing; a band whose tracks are recognizable to hip hop heads, jazz bros, and eminent hipsters across all cohorts; a band whose music is still capable of taking center stage in what we know refer to as "discourse," just because someone of some consequence decided to vent. Not content to settle on letting Steely Dan be a mood, Joan LeMay and Alex Pappademas decided to plunge into the Daniverse through the fascinating characters that haunt the songs. Their new book, Quantum Criminals, is an entirely new way of looking at the band's catalog. Armed with curiosity, imagination, and a thick file of obscure facts and Dan trivia, Alex and Joan bring these characters to life in ways that will surprise and delight even the most hardened and jaded Dan fans. Join us as we talk about this thrilling new book, but first, mind if we make a pitstop on Sunset? Never you mind what it's for, I promise it'll just be a minute. Sometime around 2016, I got the sense that we were entering into a new era of rock history: a period when the musicians we loved and admired began to die... Listen, there had been many deaths before then, but they seemed reasonably few and far between...but 2016 seems to have been the year—for me, anyone—when I realized that many of our most beloved musicians were getting older and starting to die off... That one year alone we lost David Bowie, Glen Frey of The Eagles, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and George Michael....we lost both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake of the prog band Emerson, Lake, and Palmer...Paul Kantner of Jefferson Starship...Maurice white of Earth, Wind, and Fire...Beatles producer George Martin...and that's only a partial list... In 2017, it was Gord Downie, Tom Petty, Gregg Allman, Chris Cornell, ac/dc's Malcolm Young, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, and Chuck Berry, among others.... The following year, we lost Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries, Mark E. Smith of the fall, Avicii, Aretha Franklin, and Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks. Then in 2019, Keith Flint of The Prodigy, Mark Hollis of Talk Talk,  Ranking Roger of The English Beat and General Public, Ric Ocasek of The Cars, drumming legend Ginger Baker...I could go on, but you get the idea... The one thing that binds all humans on this planet together is that some day, we're all gonna shuffle off into the great beyond... No one is getting any younger...and over the next decade, we're going to lose some of the personalities who have always been with there for us over the last 30, 40, 50, or even 60 years... With that grim reality in mind, I think the time has come for an annual look back for those whom we've lost in the last 12 months as a way to recognize their contributions to the world of music...this is 2022 in memoriam...
