This week on the show, Sara J is joined by drummer Scotty Zwang, who recently sat in with Umphrey's McGee for four songs at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Bellvue, CO on September 7th, 2023. Sara and Scotty cover an array of topics throughout their conversation, that begins with Scotty sharing how drumming has been beneficial to his life since the age of nine. Scotty then tells the story of how going to his first jamband show at 15 with his brother to see Soulive, forever changed the music he listened to. Scotty talks about how The New Deal has been a big influence and shares the “full circle” moment when he played two sets with them on JamCruise this past February. Scotty takes Sara J through his resume; Sonic Spank, Greenhouse Lounge, Dopapod, Ghostlight & More! to name a few. The “full circle” theme continues as Scotty takes us back to The Jammys in 2005 where he saw Kris Myers play for the first time, calling the experience a “game changer”, and attributing that moment in helping him take the big leap toward his path of wanting to be a musician. One that would lead him from being a super fan, to meeting the band, forging friendships with the guys, touring with UM (when Dopapod opened during the fall of 2014), to now sitting in. Scotty also reveals how he prepared for this opportunity, the intention behind his song choices and how even the Huey Lewis cover meant something extra special to him. We are so stoked to have our brother Will Hanza of Escaper back on No Simple Road this week! Escaper was formed in 2015 by Will Hanza (guitar, vocals) as a musical collective that pushed creative freedom. Joined in 2017 by Phil Kadet (keys, vocal), the band has become known for fun and fiery sets throughout northeast venues and music festivals. The band has welcomed sit-ins with members of bands such as the Disco Biscuits, Brazilian Girls, Thievery Corporation, Rubblebucket, Dopapod, Cabinet, Turkuaz and more. They have previously shared bills at Brooklyn Bowl with Jon Fishman (Phish), Karl Denson, and many other top performers. After a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been joined by drummer Sam Crespo and bassist Luke Bemand. Crespo and Bemand bring a wealth of experience to the band; Crespo tours with notable future jam act Space Bacon, while Bemand handles the low end for heavy groove trio, lespecial. The band recently released the EP, "Spaceship", which was a collaboration with Telefunken Studios. "Spaceship" is now all streaming and download platforms. We had a blast talking with Will about:playing Phish afterparties and what those crowds bring to the table. If reading a crowd and feeling their vibe is a learned skill or are you just born with it.What creating the new album 'Spaceship' was like. His thoughts on practice and if it is simply building memory in order to be able to let go.Overcoming your own headspace in order to be able to perform. How the "No Shorts On Stage" rule works. What gems he found during isolation.... and so much more!Head over to www.escapermusic.com for tour info, merch, and more!INTRO MUSIC PROVIDED BY - WILL HANZA OF ESCAPER-FREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroad-Make Sure to visit our friends at Fire On The Mountain for some amazing food at one of the 3 location in the Portland area or one of the 2 location in the Denver area!-CHECK OUT THE NSR EXCLUSIVE BETA PREVIEW OF www.venuellama.comMUSIC IN THE COMMERCIALS BY AND USED WITH PERMISSION OF:CIRCLES AROUND THE SUNOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. I recently stumbled upon a band I knew nothing about — and immediately loved their sound. Isn't it great when that happens? Their name: Maj Deeka. Their style: Steely Dan meets Umphrey's McGee meets Galactic meets Dopapod meets Reign of Kindo meets Herbie Hancock … and a dash of a lot of other stuff. They sound great. But it seemed like they didn't have a huge following. I was fascinated. Why? Turns out, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020 stymied this group's ascent. Now what? This episode is a peek into the reality of how hard it can be to elevate from making that shift between ambitiously playing in a band for fun and a little cash vs. turning your art creation into a viable career option. The pandemic splintered a lot of bands forever. These guys have a sound that's good enough to warrant landing a record deal and establish, at minimum, a regional following. Which way will it go?Listen to Maj Deeka on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC42GXMKpOoN0AMZ-kLXoRlASpotify here: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2XDqlGJ1Ki5KkmDCGhLq09Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/maj_deeka/

It's incredibly difficult to describe the awesome music Dopapod makes. Is it rock, funk, progressive rock? I honestly have no clue anymore and the forthcoming self titled release the band's 7th is a pot pourri of sonic goodness. This new album due out a May 27th has been in the works for a while now, probably dating back to when the band came off their self imposed layoff that ended in late April of 2019. Needless to say, the COVID pandemic created another break but at that point the band was already well versed on being apart and off the road. So when I caught up with Rob Compa, the band's guitar player we had a lot to talk about including the band's really great new album.    First song: Black Holes Second song: Grow See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Taraleigh and Dr. Leah talk with guitarist Rob Compa from Dopapod about how he's evolving as a musician and a human and the practices that help him find presence, cope with emotions, and get out of his head. He shares about his meditation practice and a hilarious story about his first silent retreat. During the discussion, Rob makes connections from his childhood and how much about life he has learned from the stage. Also included is a special treat Dopapod has incorporated into their upcoming album. For the “Did you Know,” Dr. Leah shares a technique for coping with overwhelming emotions and Taraleigh puts her own personal spin on it in the “Daily Jam.” Rob Compa is the guitarist for the nationally touring progressive rock jamband Dopapod, who over the last 14 years has toured in every nook and cranny of the US and elsewhere, and recorded seven albums of original material. When not busy with Dopapod, Rob fills his time with his trio, RCA, solo acoustic shows, and numerous other musical acts as a sideman. He is also a passionate guitar instructor, with a constantly growing roster of students. Find out more at https://robcompaguitar.com/. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dopapod over Zoom video! Dopapod access a heightened level of cosmic harmony in their music. The quartet—EliWinderman [keys, vocals], Rob Compa [guitar, vocals], Chuck Jones [bass], and Neal “Fro”Evans [drums]—present albums as experiences meant to be shared out of your speakers andon stage. After generating millions of streams, packing shows coast-to-coast, and earningacclaim from Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Glide Magazine, and more, the group architect animmersive and expansive vision on their self-titled seventh full-length offering, Dopapod. The group's hypnotic hybrid of funk, rock, jazz, bluegrass, and electronica bloomed brilliantly on2009's Radar, and it continued to blossom on the likes of Never Odd Or Even [2014] andMegagem [2017]. Along the way, fan favorites such as “Present Ghosts” reeled in 2.4 millionSpotify streams and counting. 2019's Emit Time arrived to acclaim from Guitar World, Relix,Glide, Jambase, and more. Simultaneously, they sold out headline gigs and graced the bills ofElectric Forest, Summer Camp, High Sierra, and Bonaroo where Rolling Stone named themamong the festival's “best kept secrets.” After a marathon near-decade run, they enjoyed analmost year-long hiatus to realign and reenergize before reuniting with a new fire during 2019and partaking in something of a “soft return.” After a brief hiatus to regroup and recharge their creative efforts, Dopapod assembled whatwould become their next album, the self-titled Dopapod, and looked at the loose threads of theircatalog to conceptually tie their journey together. They chose to self-title their seventh offeringas a totem to the fact they've realized their full potential in terms of music and vision. Tacklingtime travel, balance and symmetry, binary pairs and more, Dopapod's palindromic existencecontinues to conjure alchemy nearly fifteen years into their journey. We want to hear from you! Episode 003 of The Upful LIFE Podcast features drummer SCOTTY ZWANG, currently of Ghost Light. Scotty has been an enigmatic persona in the Northeast jam/jamtronica scenes for well over a decade, and is a fixture on the Philly musical landscape. The erstwhile rhythm wizard goes deep in this interview, taking us back to his humble beginnings in New York, learning the drums and joining alternative rock bands as a youth (Code Anchor). We then embark on the lengthy discussion of his entire career arc, including his stint in Sonic Spank, which is when I first encountered him at The Blockley in Philadelphia.     From there we touch on a variety of projects and endeavors, including the mentorship of KJ Sawka, Scotty joining (and leaving) Greenhouse Lounge and Dopapod, and the creation of his current project Ghost Light, which was formed by JRAD's Tom Hamilton, and includes pianist Holly Bowling, among others. We also take a lengthy and hilarious detour into his history with The Disco Biscuits and affiliated projects. Scotty's story is one of success, failure, and rebounding to bigger and better things. Scotty closes things out with his thoughts on taking a step back from the rock n'roll and EDM party scenes (and the activities that go along with them), as well as his recent choice to go Vegan. We play a little Ghost Light jam in the intro, so Scotty's interview starts around 12:30 and lasts about seventy minutes. This episode's Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week is a look back at the astounding collaboration between Jamiroquai's Jay Kay and the debut performance of The Fearless Flyers, a Vulfpeck side project. This magic took place late night the Sunday before Labor Day, at an official afterparty for North Coast Music Festival.     PLEASE RATE & REVIEW PLEASE RATE & REVIEW on iTunes!
