History of toboggans in Maine, what goes into racing, and what to know about the championships in Camden
We're back and NOT happy about the weather, urinals, smelly people, and Toronto banning tobogganing. Dean has a thing against hair and smells. Lochlin leads with a story about the smelliest hairball he knows. If you have a friend who smells, you must listen to Lochlin's PSA about people who smell. YOU can do something about them. Lochlin just went through -50 in Alberta, and Dean wants to know what it feels like. Is it a dry cold? LOL. Toronto banned tobogganing this year because it's the city that fun forgot. Forty-five hills have "NO TOBOGANNING" signs because the assholes at city hall are scared kids are going to have too much fun!!! We discuss the nanny state and the mandatory tobogganing injuries we all suffered as kids. Make Toboganning Great Again!!!!! We end with one of Dean's OTHER things—urinal etiquette. Chuck didn't want to play around with The Urinal Subject this week. This is in Lochlin's wheelhouse...

On today's 2-23-23 Thursday show: Snow is on the way for the Bay Area!, a new study showed that drinking certain sodas had an interesting effect on mice, super pigs are invading the United States, low rise jeans are officially back, a plane spent 16 hours in the air only to be forced to return to the same airport that it took off from, Smashburger launches a Mac and Cheese burger and Graham thinks they stole the idea from him, and there is a new law being proposed in Florida to make it illegal to have your dog stick its head out of the car window, plus so much more!
She's 35 weeks pregnant and anything but thriving. Buuut in typical Rachel LaForce fashion, she does have some thoughts. On socials last week, I shared a video about choosing between - what I dubbed - "The Currency of Chaos" or "The Currency of Peace". Shocker: people, corporations and “politicians” MAKE BILLIONS selling you chaos. Don't give them your energy too. Obviously, this is a nuanced conversation that I could pontificate on it on for hours, but also. . . what I am sharing is not a "new" idea. There is no need (IMHO) to lament on it. The world is full of darkness and no one works harder than the devil. Er - well - Kris Jenner - I digress. The quicker, we can dial into the currency of peace, the quicker we can save our energy to fight the big fight. It isn't our job to save the world. It is our job to save our world because when each of us lights up, ourselves, our families, our communities - that sh*t spreads like wildfire. That light gives us the energy. the power to create sustainable, long lasting change. Also, full disclosure, this episode is FULL of references from the 1993 classic "Cool Runnings". I regret nothing. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rachel-laforce/support

Welcome to the latest Guides Gone Wild special release! Today we're hyping A Flying Flock, the intrepid all women team who'll be layering up in their bright pink and yellow snowsuits this weekend (February 4-5, 2023) to compete in the U.S. National Toboggan Championship taking place at the Camden Snow Bowl in Camden, Maine. The flamingos and ducks that make up this fabulous flock include five Mainers - Maile Buker, a marketing junkie from Portland; Tricia Tobey, an interior designer from Kittery Point; Marianne Naess, an aquaculturist from Cape Elizabeth; Helene Dicesare, a nurse from Arundel; and Deanna Smith, a lobster woman from Tenants Harbor - and a lone New Hampshire-ite, Lisa Teague, an interior designer from Portsmouth. Maile, Lisa, and eventually Deanna joined me for an impromptu chat to talk about the history of the toboggan championship; their fundraising recipients, Trekkers; and why a handful of women 'of a certain age' would decide to impersonate a pink puff pastry with yellow cream filling and take their lives into their hands hurtling down a 400' long ice chute onto a partially frozen, rockpile strewn lake. It's freaking nuts, and I absolutely love it.Whether you're on Team Flamingo or Team Duck, you're going to enjoy these ladies' meteoric flight pattern. So layer up, grab a balaclava and those cowbells, and head over to Camden Snow Bowl this weekend - the teams will be running all day on Saturday and Sunday morning in the hopes of making the finals.Check out the schedule and get information about parking, shuttles, the bands, the fun, all the things over at camdensnowbowl.com. And I hope you'll consider supporting Trekkers in honor of these brave ladies, you can go to @a_flying_flock on Instagram and use the link in bio to donate.**P.S. Maile wasn't kidding, apparently there was a flamingo-duck. And Chute Master Stuart Young has his own inspiring story!
