It takes time to build a brand and find the people who are going to love your music. There is no such thing as an overnight success, people just don’t see all the work that is put in before the success happens. The one thing that you can count on is that things never stay the same, you have to pivot, adjust with the technology, and look forward to how it will impact the future.   RESOURCE LINKS:  LaunchLeft Podcast Smart Link Links for Strand of Oaks: Strand of Oaks Website  Strand of Oaks Instagram  Strand of Oaks Facebook   Ian Rogers’ Bio Ian Rogers is the Chief Experience Officer at Ledger, leading the consumer-facing business delivering the world’s #1 way to buy and secure cryptocurrency.  Prior, Ian was the Chief Digital Officer at LVMH for five transformative years, working with a portfolio of nearly one hundred brands across luxury including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Sephora, and Hennessy.  Ian also sits on the boards of Dr Marten’s and Lyst. In 2021, in full pandemic tilt, Timothy Showalter aka Strand Of Oaks, released a brilliant  record in the vein of much of his stratospheric catalog called In Heaven (Dead Oceans) but decided not to tour on it, because that's what you didn't do during those heavy days; tour. Instead, he shut it all down. Stopped strumming and humming and stopped checking his emails and all other things that create anxiety for an artist who's been busting his ass for most of 20 years and who's making quite a dent in the music world with his intoxicating mix of Neil Youngian based songs and stories. There's always been an astral leaning, psychedelic connection to Strand of Oaks music, but for that moment it needed to cease, and all Tim Showalter wanted to do was paint. Not to mention, he was asked to join the cast of Mayans MC for 2 seasons, working with Edward James Olmos, something he'd never considered a possibility. The painting and acting paused, and the music started again. But this time he wasn't drawn to his guitar and the usual Youngian template. Instead he headed to his synthesizers and his long time engineer/producer/collaborator Kevin Ratterman (Elliot, Twin Limb) and rebirthed his muse in a different form, albeit one that continues to radiate what Tim does instinctively, move the listener. His new album Miracle Focus, is a fresh start and reflects his DIY ethic completely. It's still 100% Strand Of Oaks, long time fans will be relieved to know, but uses instruments that inspired him for this round of songs after the time off. Songs that give back what he's been living, Transendental Meditation, Yoga, Ram Dass and the feeling of joy that each moment creates, passes and recreates again infinitely.

"I don't have stage fright, I have life fright." Indiana native Timothy Showalter -- the mind and voice behind the moniker Strand of Oaks -- has pulled no punches when it comes to combatting his own childhood trauma and lifelong anxieties through music. And while he says that touring and performing puts him in his most zen state, he has experienced a death or sorts with the guitar-centered music Strand of Oaks has done until now. His upcoming album Miracle Focus finds him piloting synthesizers and crafting, what he calls, "a manual for my life. A soundtrack to connection." And despite a drastic instrumental shift, the core of Miracle Focus is still within the hopeful sonic palette that Showalter is known for. On today's second visit to Vinyl Emergency, he also discusses having a song go #1 in Belgium, what got him kicked out of Moby's restaurant, and his recent TV role on the Sons of Anarchy spin-off, Mayans MC. Visit strandofoaks.net for social media, tour dates and to pre-order Miracle Focus before it drops June 7th.

October is upon us, and with it comes new records that are perfectly timed to soundtrack the changing of the leaves. This week, Steve and Ian are digging into Let Me Have One More, the anticipated new record from Illuminati Hotties, as well as Strand Of Oaks' In Heaven. Both artists represent relatively opposite ends of the Indiecast-core spectrum — Illuminati Hotties have perfected a brand of irreverent, anti-capitalist alternative rock while Tim Showalter's music style tends to lean into more atmospheric soundscapes and a folk-forward songwriting style. In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is getting ready for fall with True Love, the new album from vibey Austin duo Hovvdy. Steve is plugging his recent interview with BJ Burton, the producer who has had a hand in crafting some of the best and most influential albums of the last decade (think: Yeezus, Bon Iver's 22, A Million, and many more).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!! Join us for this fun and insightful conversation with Tim Showalter of Strand of Oaks.  Strand of Oaks' new album, In Heaven, produced by Kevin Ratterman and featuring Carl Broemel and Bo Koster of My Morning Jacket, is due out Oct 1 and is an extremely personal work built on tragedy, loss and renewal.  Tim is a multi-faceted artist and human, and he explores with Josh the various ups and downs in his own personal life, but most importantly and to his credit, continues to emanate a positivity and light-heartedness that is as infectious as it is warm.  Tim is the ultimate renaissance man -- a multi-talented and hard-working performer who leaves it all out on the stage -- all the while constantly radiating light and good vibes.  Come aboard for this wonderful conversation with the uber-fascinating Tim Showalter on Roadcase! For more information: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music:  "Eugene" (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

The staying power of the aforementioned acts is undeniable, but at the same time there aren't many up and coming acts who are creating music that feels similar, sonically or thematically. It's unclear whether there is even room in the heartland rock space for any acts that are still emerging, including some of our favorite underrated artists like like Wild Pink or Strand Of Oaks.In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian has been vibing with Johnny Football Hero's Complacency EP, while Steve is once again plugging HBO's forthcoming Woodstock '99 documentary for which he served as a consulting producer.

The '90s are easily the least well-regarded decade of Bruce’s career. If people make note of this period, it’s to illustrate how far he fell without the E Street Band, who finally reunited with Bruce at the end of the decade to great acclaim and popular excitement, and have remained with the Boss ever since. And yet I’ve always had a soft spot for '90s Bruce. This period coincides with my coming-of-age years as a music fan. Bruce had been a fixture in my life since "Born in the U.S.A.," but it wasn’t until the '90s that I started to become a true hard-core fan and get deep into his catalogue. For fans of my generation, "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town" were the first big “new” Bruce albums of our lives. And then there's "The Ghost of Tom Joad," which as a piece of writing stands with anything he has ever done.  To talk about '90s Bruce, I called up Tim Showalter of Strand Of Oaks, who over time has evolved, like Bruce, from being a moody folkie to the maker of widescreen rock reocrds like 2014’s excellent "Heal" and 2017’s "Hard Love." In early 2018, he put out a very good outtakes collection form that album called "Harder Love."

This week's guest is Jim Hanke. Each week, the host of Vinyl Emergency interviews musicians, media personalities, and other movers and shakers about their relationship with records and the impact wax has had on their lives. During the show's 66-episode (and counting) run, Hanke has introduced the likes of Ted Leo, Speech from Arrested Development, Strand Of Oaks, David Bazan, Rocky Votolato, Matthew Sweet, members of Braid, Joe Block, and many more. Along the way, the host relocated from Chicagoland to his native Milwaukee. Now part of the small-but-passionate Milwaukee podcast community, Hanke and fellow local podcast host Tyler Maas met up to talk about the growing medium, the challenges both of them have faced gaining local listeners, and the future of the format—both in Milwaukee and elsewhere. Hanke also discusses the evolution of the vinyl market and whether the tipping point is nigh for records and podcasts. Tyler also incorrectly claims Twinstar (Hanke's former band) wrote a song called "On My Dick."

t. For this episode, AD’s Jason P. Woodbury sat down with Timothy Showalter of Indiana’s Strand of Oaks to discuss the band’s latest album, Hard Love, which melds Showalter’s love of dub reggae production with heartland rock and the big beat sound of Creation Records’ heyday.

With his previous record, Timothy Showalter sought to look inward. On his latest LP as Strand of Oaks, Hard Love, Showalter is looking outward with his most expansive and expressive songs to date. Opening with the crushing, lengthy, and affecting “Taking Acid and Talking To My Brother”, the Philadelphia group's latest session is a stunning performance of four Hard Love tracks and a discussion between Kevin Cole and Showalter on how making shows sacred led Strand of Oaks to its next chapter. Timothy Showalter -- the voice and mind behind Strand of Oaks -- describes himself as a "smiling, sweaty, straight-out-of-a-river wild man" this week, and the vibrant album cover of this year's "Hard Love" encapsulates his aura so well, it nearly jumps off the shelf. His infatuation with vinyl and music in general is contagious and vast, expressing his adoration in this episode for anyone from "Weird Al" Yankovic to Endless Boogie. Today, we also discuss the crazy night that led to the cover photo for "Hard Love," why having his face on his album covers plays into his joy of digging for vinyl, what some of his discography is going for online (and why he won't buy anything on vinyl over the internet), what the best sounding album in his collection is, loaning Basic Cable Band leader Jimmy Vivino his guitar when Strand of Oaks recently played Conan, his obsession with dub music, whether one can truly be present while listening to music alone, and much more!  Visit StrandOfOaks.net for tour dates, social media, etc.

Grammy-winner John Congleton is one of the most sought-after record producers in indie music today, both because he's insanely talented and because he hates being bored. In his own uncompromising career as a rock musician, John pushes buttons and boundaries with a wild mix of rock, jazz, and noise, and his production career conveys a similar impatience with doing what's expected: his collaborations with St. Vincent, Cloud Nothings, Strand Of Oaks, Mountain Goats, Earl Sweatshirt and dozens of others illustrate his insanely wide range. This week on The One You Feed we have Timothy Showalter from Strand of Oaks. Strand of Oaks aka Timothy Showalter just released one of the years best records. Heal has been celebrated by NPR, Pitchfork, Mojo and Uncut among many others. It's one of our favorite records of the year. The story behind Heal: "From the first bars of HEAL, the exhilarating melodic stomp of 'Goshen '97' puts you right into Tim Showalter's fervent teenage mindset. We find him in his family's basement den in Goshen, IN, feeling alienated but even at 15 years old, believing in the alchemy and power of music to heal your troubles. "The record is called HEAL, but it's not a soft, gentle healing, it's like scream therapy, a command, because I ripped out my subconscious, looked through it, and saw the worst parts. And that's how I got better." HEAL embodies that feeling of catharsis and rebirth, desperation and euphoria, confusion and clarity. It is deeply personal and unwittingly anthemic.Showalter was on tour, walking home on a mild autumn night in Malmo, Sweden, when he first felt the weight of the personal crisis that would ignite him to write HEAL. "It was a culmination of pressure," Showalter recalls. "My marriage was suffering, I'd released a record I was disappointed in, I didn't like how I looked or acted...so I'd gone on tour, I was gone about two years! I didn't take time to think about failure, but I knew I was going deeper and deeper...I was thinking, I have this life, but it's not my life, I haven't done it right..."When Showalter returned, he wrote 30 songs in three weeks, a process that proved difficult, but cathartic and at times invigorating. Previous Strand Of Oaks records were more skeletal, raw examples of folk-rooted Americana with occasional rock and electronic currents, that have now come to the fore. HEAL is a bold new beginning, with a thrilling full-tilt sound that draws on Showalter's love of '70s, '80s and '90s rock and pop, with the singer and guitarist playing the intense valedictory confessor. In This Interview Tim and I Discuss... The One You Feed parable. The great success of his new record. The saddest line on his new record. The importance of feeling all of our emotions, not just the good ones. How hard it is to write uplifting music that isn't cheesy. Disliking ironic music. The redemptive power of rock and roll. How we care less about what people think as we age. The power of being our authentic selves. Becoming who we are. Avoiding the victim/villain mindset. Jason Molina of Songs:Ohia.
