I'm psyched to have @michiganrattlers on the show this week!! Friends from childhood, Graham Young, Adam Reed, Christian Wilder and Tony Audia all grew up together in Petosky, Michigan playing music, and dreaming of taking it out on the road. Now over a decade of touring later, they're on their third studio album, Waving From A Sea, and are known for deep lyricism, a rich sonic quality, and a killer live show. This latest effort is produced by @dominicjohndavis (Jack White, Greensky Bluegrass, Willie Nelson) and represents a turning point in Michigan Rattlers young career.I was happy to have the entire band on the show and we talk about their early development and long days spent on the road. We also discuss what it means to be “of a place and time” and still be together doing what they love. We have a great time chatting — these guys know how to bring the high energy both on and off stage — and I'm super excited to share this action-packed interview!! Send us a textDaniel Rodriguez spent much of his time living in Nederland. While he now lives in Lyons, he still keeps Nederland close to his heart and calls the town the source of his musical roots. From the band's formation in 2006 to its primary dissolution in 2018, Rodriguez served as the guitar and banjo player of Elephant Revival. He was also one of the founders and key songwriters of the group.Once the band dissolved, however, he decided to focus on a solo career, releasing his debut EP Your Heart, The Stars, The Milky Way in 2019. He has since released two full-length albums, Sojourn of a Burning Sun in 2020 and Vast Nothing in 2023. He even collaborated with The Lumineers as a writer and featured vocalist on the 2021 single “This Is Life (Merry Christmas).”He's also gotten his own band together. Performing with musicians in Lyons, he made connections and developed a band from there. Currently, his band, simply known as The Daniel Rodriguez Band, consists of himself, Zach Jackson on bass, Kevin Matthews on drums, and Justin Mazer on guitar.Rodriguez has collaborated with many incredible musicians over his entire career. These include local musicians like Benny “Burle” Galloway, who's written songs performed by groups such as Yonder Mountain String Band, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Greensky Bluegrass, and Eric Thorin, a two-time Grammy nominee for his contributions to the albums Calling You From My Mountain by the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band and Man on Fire by Danny Barnes. For a few years, he even roomed with Sally Van Meter, who played on the 1994 Grammy-winning album The Great Dobro Sessions and recorded with Jerry Garcia for the album The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute, in what would be Garcia's final recording session before he died in 1995. Listen in as Tales From The Green Room corrals three star power artists from the 2024 Mill Valley Music Festival! Margo Price joins the green room conversation after her festival performance and moments before her late night exclusive show at Sweetwater Music Hall later that evening - musing on demystifying psilocybin, her journey to “California Sober” status, touring with her husband of 20-years, and her penchant for speaking out on important issues. Dobbrow guitar-player-extraordinaire, Anders Beck of Greensky Bluegrass, follows with what turns out to be a “cosmic” discussion with host Dennis Strazulo about Anders' all-time favorite Grateful Dead show which coincidentally was Dennis' first, then reflecting on the thrill of playing with his heroes and sharing some memorable stories experienced along the way. Eric Johnson of Fruit Bats closes out chatting about his Marin County music connection, the resurgence of his band, their expanding audience, and the inspiration behind his music.CreditsCalifornia Sober (feat. Jamband alert for this week's episode with Jen Meyerhardt!! Jen is co-owner and co-producer of Northlands Music and Arts Festival taking place June 14-15 in Swanzey, NH and talked to me about her impressive history in the legal jungle and how that prepared her for the live events production world.A native of New Canaan, CT, with a law degree and years of experience in Silicon Valley, Jen is also a long-time jamband fan and lover of live music, who now brings her impressive life experiences and go-getter attitude to even greater heights. We talked what it means to truly lean into her lifelong passion for live music to bring some of the industry's premier jam bands to play a humble New Hampshire hamlet year after year. It's an inspiring story of following one's dream, listening to the music play, and heeding the call to see where it all may take you. Jen's long strange trip serves as an inspiration to all, while perhaps more importantly, her journey represents a shining beacon and role model for diversity and women's representation at the highest level of live music events, and I'm all about it!! I'm super pumped to speak with Anders Beck for Episode 226!! Anders is the dobro player for Greensky Bluegrass, whose unique blend of Bluegrass and Rock and makes it one of the most compelling sounds in live music today. Greensky has been touring practically non-stop for over 20 years, and Anders stopped in to chat with me just after completing their Winter Tour with yet another sold out two-night run at the Ryman Auditorium. Anders has a fun-loving and super chill vibe, and he is filled with gratitude for his place in life. “Music means live music,” Anders explained to me, and his appreciation for doing exactly what he set out to do; that is, play live music in a successful touring band, is utterly inspiring and heart-warming. Anders embodies what music is all about, and I'm here for it. Join both of us for this week's episode!! The band's music defies easy classification, blending traditional bluegrass elements with innovative twists that make it resonate with a wide range of music enthusiasts.Formed in 2000, Greensky Bluegrass consists of five incredibly talented musicians, each contributing their unique strengths to the group. Mandolinist Paul Hoffman, banjo player Dave Bruzza, dobro player Anders Beck, bassist Mike Devol, and guitarist Michael Arlen Bont together create a sound that is both technically proficient and emotionally resonant. One of the defining features of Greensky Bluegrass is their impeccable musicianship. They bring the instrumental virtuosity expected in bluegrass but inject it with energy and creativity that transcends genre boundaries. The group's live performances are particularly renowned for their electric atmosphere, attracting a fervent following of fans known as "Campers."What truly sets Greensky Bluegrass apart is their ability to push the boundaries of bluegrass while staying true to its roots. They incorporate elements of rock, folk, and even a touch of psychedelia into their sound.
