Coaxing nuanced expression from analog machines and digital possibilities alike, @noahpred has been envisioning the future through electronic music for over twenty years – yet the story of this accomplished producer and DJ continues to unfold. Reinterpreting his signature production style anew, 2018 saw the release of two full-lengths charting the territories between deep space experimentalism, intricate polyrhythms, delicate soundscapes, evocative acid, and hypnotic dub frontiers. The breadth of Noah’s sonic worldview was espoused until September 2019 through his monthly two-hour podcast, IFS. Each episode reveals the depth of his technical approach, the sensibility of a seasoned selector, and the pedigree of a late-night veteran. A two-time Juno Award nominee in his native Canada, a music educator and technologist in his adopted hometown Berlin, an alum of Cynosure, Highgrade, and Trapez LTD, and founder of the acclaimed Thoughtless imprint, Noah is also a DJ whose past residencies at Stereobar in Montreal and Fukhouse in Toronto helped lay the framework for his dynamic yet fluid sets that continue to resonate with diverse communities. A notable newcomer in Canada’s underground scene of the early 2000s, Pred’s distinctive production style earned him a place among his peers with releases on @weareimmigrant, Intrinsic Design, and Consigned Recordings. Driven by the fuel that fired up Thoughtless, Noah relocated to Berlin in 2011, where his creative horizons continued to expand via collaborative projects with @tomclark as @alseimage on @get-physical-music, with @pablo-bolivar on @apparel-music and @biotop-label, with @timxavier on Alphahouse, and with @deepchild as @concubine-berlin. Between his recent solo EPs for @traumraum-kollektiv, @computemusic, and Biotop, his vivid sets of techno, house, and electro, the advanced sound design of his haunting atmospherics, and the ever-evolving scope of his technical capabilities, Noah’s commitment to electronic innovation remains as strong as ever – and in the face of global uncertainty, his utopian sonic narratives have never felt so vital. With a variety of custom generative sequencers constructed for his Manifest Audio sound design outlet due for release in 2020, Noah turns his focus toward the possibilities of sound installation and multimedia work. Noah Pred is a Canadian producer, DJ and music educator. We caught up with him just before he was to discuss keeping a creative flow in the studio at Ableton’s now postponed Loop festival. However, his topic seems more relevant than ever to these times of lockdown and quarantine. In the podcast, he talks about his early transition to electronic music, explains how he ended up teaching and offers his tips on how to keep those creative juices flowing.

Germany’s Tom Clark and Canada’s Noah Pred have both individually made quite the mark over the years, Clark founded the infamous Highgrade Records whilst Pred headed up Thoughtless Music as well as releases on the likes of Biotop, Morris / Audio, Alphahouse and Trapez between them. Here though the pair return under their False Image guise for the Tact Recordings imprint, with remixes from the label founders Yard One and Fletcher.‘Schönliner’ leads with a bumpy drum groove, winding dub textures and wandering resonant synth licks resulting in a funk-infused slice of micro house. The second original ‘Willowing’ is up next, retaining a similar aesthetic but upping the energy levels with driving synth swells, stuttering low- end hits and a winding resonant hook.Fletcher’s remix of ‘Schönliner’ follows, taking a more refined approach with heavily swung drums, pops, clicks and pulsating subs at its core whilst stirring in the original’s smooth dub echoes. Yard One’s ‘Reshape’ of ‘Willowing’ closes the package, stripping things back to modulating percussion, the original’s sharp low-end hits and an underlying atmospheric tension throughout.
