Rowland & Chinami Ricketts, Indigo Artists

Indigo is a unique dyestuff, no less so for being found in so many different plants. Coaxing the blue hue out of green leaves and onto yarn or cloth requires a combination of chemistry and skill that has arisen across the globe. Rowland and Chinami Ricketts each found their own way to indigo in Tokushima, Japan: Rowland was looking for a sustainable artistic medium after learning that the darkroom chemicals in his photography were making their way into local streams where he was teaching English. Chinami was seeking a colorful lifelong practice working with her hands, and it made sense to pursue the specialty of her region. Tokushima is celebrated as one of the leading centers for indigo cultivation, and both Rowland and Chinami took on an apprenticeship in traditional Japanese methods of working with indigo. Rowland and Chinami are now located in Bloomington, Indiana, where Rowland is a Professor in Indiana University's Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design. Though thousands of miles from where they first learned to grow indigo, Indiana also has a temperate climate that suits Persecaria tinctoria plants. Following the cycles of planting, harvesting, and processing, they cultivate a crop of indigo for their own work and to support other artists each year. Rowland's earlier indigo works included noren, a form of decorative home textile that often screens a door, and geometric paste-resist wall hangings. In recent years, he has taken on more large-scale installations that play with light, volume, and even sound; these works have occupied interior and exterior spaces on several continents. Chinami chose to pursue the difficult kasuri technique, a bind-dye-weave method akin to ikat. Chinami creates warp and weft kasuri in patterns that require great skill and precision to dye and weave. Her primary format is narrow-width woven cloth intended for kimono and obi, though recently she has transformed that cloth into wall-mounted artwork. In addition to their separate work, Rowland and Chinami collaborated on Zurashi/Slipped, a large yarn-based work created for the Seattle Art Museum exhibition Ikat. We also spoke about Rowland's explorations of the traditional American coverlet in a few multicolored works. Whether you're drawn to fiber art, traditional textile methods, or the magic of indigo, you'll love this interview. This episode is available in two formats, a full version that includes portions in Japanese and English (available in the Handwoven Library (https://handwovenmagazine.com/library/ESyBfuxJRaCn6bLimw1SXw)) and a voice-over version in English only (available through the regular podcast feed). From elite football to elite horticulture - ambition and high standards with Creepers' Michael Buck

At the age of 15, Michael Buck, was busy destroying plants in his back garden kicking a football around as at that time he was already getting paid to play and was contemplating a future in the professional game. But he transferred his ambition to the world of horticulture and as head of horticulture at Creepers Nursery, is not beyond singing to plants to get them to flower.Creepers, which serves a client base predominantely made up of landscape and garden designers and developers, supplied plants for Hamptons Mediterranean Garden at the 2023 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. These included structural shrubs and trees including a 1800-year-old Punica granatum - and other "serious specimens" sourced from Italy in January. Coaxing the Punica into flower in this year's rather cold, wet spring was a particular challenge:"We don't have 14m-tall glasshouses so we try to create a microclimate within the nursery - we put them inetween buildings to create the warmth and a good feed".He discusses the benefits to nurseries of supplying Chelsea show gardens though he admits "I can say there's no benefits health-wise! The stress and strain of being involved insuch a show is vast." On the upside, it bestows, of course invaluable prestige and publicity.Mediterranean is "a big part" of what Creepers does and naturally the nursery is having to pay close attention to the threat of Xylella fastidiosa, which has ravaged olive and other hosts in countries like Italy and Portugal. As a result, says Michael, "we have an 'open door' policy [with Defra], we have Defra in once- a week; we are very much on board with them coming in whenever them want. They take create care with imported plants and liaising with clients. "Xylella is bigger than the whole industry, as soon as it comes into the UK, there are big problems".Import-related issues include delays in hauliers, phyto-sanitary checks slowing down supplies but he says the key is planning and communication through all parts of the supply chain through to the customer. He talks about shifts in plant fashions and discusses the plants currently in high demand. In common with the rest of the sector, Creepers Nursery is wrestling with the transition to peat-free growing. Michael talks about how they are approaching it as the mooted peat ban deadline of 2026 nears. On the skills shortage, Michael sums it up as "challenging" and he explores some of the reasons for it, the way Creepers are handling it and what might help ease the crisis for horticulture. As for the future, Michael is looking at bridging his elite-level footballing past with his horticultural present with the idea of Creepers becoming "a centre of excellence" in training relative newcomers to horticulture to "make sure our horticultural standards are the highest they can be at all times". Coaxing a Team To Self Organize - Mike Cohn

The Daily Standup

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 29, 2022 7:14

I'm often asked a question that is impossible to answer. It's something like, “What camera settings should I use when filming Bigfoot?” That question is impossible to answer because Bigfoot doesn't exist. (Or does he?) It is similarly impossible to answer, “What do I do when a team won't self organize?” This can't be answered because a team that is allowed to self organize will self organize. A team may, for example, decide its former tech lead must approve all designs or will review all code before it's checked in. In most cases, these would not be good results of a team self organizing. But the team has self organized. I think of it similar to the school dances I attended when I was 13 and 14. We boys would stand against the wall with only a brave few venturing to ask someone to dance. We'd self organized. Not well, but we had. Perhaps the real question I'm often asked, then, is what to do when a team self organizes in a sub-optimal manner. Here are three things to try if you suspect your team has organized suboptimally. First, refuse to step in and make decisions for the team. Some teams are reluctant to embrace self organization. When told they have authority over how work gets done, these teams will often wait for someone to make decisions for them. When you see this happen, resist the temptation to make the decision. Either wait silently for them to decide or reiterate that the decision is theirs and you'll support them in whatever they decide. Second, amplify or dampen differences among team members. Imagine a team of clones. How clones decide to organize around their work doesn't matter because each close is identical in all ways to all other clones. Our team members are not clones; there are differences among them. These differences include technical expertise, domain knowledge, power, gender, race, education, connections to others in the company, problem-solving approach, and so on. The types and degrees of these differences influence how a team self organizes. When you suspect a team has not organized itself well, amplify or dampen differences among team members. For example, consider a team composed of individuals who each favor quick decision making, sometimes to the detriment of making good decisions. Look for an opportunity to add a team member with a different decision-making style. Third, praise appropriate behavior. Praising appropriate behavior will encourage more of that behavior. If a team member makes a decision that would have been left to a manager in the pre-agile past, praise that team member. More importantly, offer that praise regardless of whether the decision turns out to be the right one. Perhaps add a short discussion regarding how it might be possible to make a better decision next time. But first you'll want to commend the person (publicly, if possible) for going beyond traditional responsibilities. Without self-organization, teams remain overly directed by managers. This leads to a team feeling less ownership of (and attachment to) its goals. Self-organizing teams move more quickly due to a greater sense of investment in their work. Getting a team to embrace self-organizing frees managers for other work and benefits the organization and the job satisfaction of team members, enabling the team to succeed with agile,

Coaxing the Eclipsing Binary V367 Cygni Out of Its Shell by T. J. Davidge. on Thursday 22 September Spectra that cover 0.63 - 0.69um with a spectral resolution ~ 17000 are presented of the W Serpentis system V367 Cygni. Absorption lines of FeII and SiII that form in a circumsystem shell are prominent features, and the depths of these are stable with time, suggesting that the shell is smoothly distributed and well-mixed. Further evidence of uniformity comes from modest radial velocity variations measured in the deepest parts of the shell lines. It is suggested that motions previously attributed to rotation of the shell are instead artifacts of contamination from the donor star spectrum. A donor star spectrum is extracted that is consistent with that of an early to mid-A giant. The depths of metallic lines in the donor spectrum vary with orbital phase, suggesting that spot activity covers a large fraction of the surface of that star. A spectrum of the accretion disk that surrounds the second star is also extracted, and similarities are noted with the emission spectra of Herbig Ae/Be stars. In addition to variations with orbital phase, H$alpha$ changes with time over timescales of no more than two orbits. A tentative detection of HeI 6678 emission is made near primary minimum, but not at other phases. Finally, projected emission from hot dust in and around V367 Cyg is more-or-less symmetric and extends over 28 arcsec, or 0.09 pc at the distance of the system -- V367 Cyg is thus expelling matter into a large volume of the surrounding space. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.10449v1

New PPTA numbers show 60,000 students are missing at least three days of school every fortnight and nearly 40 percent of students are not attending regularly. The government has announced $88 million in funding to try and tackle what some are calling a truancy crisis. But Ōtāhuhu College's Principal says the funding alone isn't enough, and some of his school's previous pleas for help have fallen on deaf ears. Ron DeSantis says the state has launched a new effort to provide shots to homebound seniors … starting with people who survived the death camps in World War II. — The Governor made the announcement at a synagogue in Aventura, where rabbis, pastors and ministers came together to encourage their flocks to have faith in vaccines. — DeSantis is also making plans for additional vaccines provided to Florida by the Joe Biden administration. — The health department reported 228 new fatalities from COVID-19 Thursday and our death toll has reached 27,698. At the current rate, we’ll pass the 28,000 mark this weekend. — The pandemic exposed all the flaws in America’s health care system and policymakers in Washington are talking about creating a single-payer system. Sen. Manny Diaz Jr. of Hialeah is proposing a constitutional amendment to make that about impossible in Florida. — Republican leaders are also taking aim at the state retirement fund. Sen. Ray Rodriguez wants all new hires to be forced into 401(K)s instead of receiving a pension. — While Republicans fixate on pensions, Democrats are focusing on the Stand Your Ground law. Sen. Shevrin Jones has filed a bill to repeal it. — And finally, the state Supreme Court disbarred a former Florida Man convicted of using female clients in two county jails to make porn.

Coaxing nuanced expression from analog machines and digital possibilities alike, @noahpred has been envisioning the future through electronic music for over twenty years – yet the story of this accomplished producer and DJ continues to unfold. Reinterpreting his signature production style anew, 2018 saw the release of two full-lengths charting the territories between deep space experimentalism, intricate polyrhythms, delicate soundscapes, evocative acid, and hypnotic dub frontiers. The breadth of Noah’s sonic worldview was espoused until September 2019 through his monthly two-hour podcast, IFS. Each episode reveals the depth of his technical approach, the sensibility of a seasoned selector, and the pedigree of a late-night veteran. A two-time Juno Award nominee in his native Canada, a music educator and technologist in his adopted hometown Berlin, an alum of Cynosure, Highgrade, and Trapez LTD, and founder of the acclaimed Thoughtless imprint, Noah is also a DJ whose past residencies at Stereobar in Montreal and Fukhouse in Toronto helped lay the framework for his dynamic yet fluid sets that continue to resonate with diverse communities. A notable newcomer in Canada’s underground scene of the early 2000s, Pred’s distinctive production style earned him a place among his peers with releases on @weareimmigrant, Intrinsic Design, and Consigned Recordings. With a variety of custom generative sequencers constructed for his Manifest Audio sound design outlet due for release in 2020, Noah turns his focus toward the possibilities of sound installation and multimedia work. Bridging the gap from '70's love & hate to rave culture. Born in the oil fields of Oildale California and coming to the Bay via Eureka. Coming to SF heart broken when his band broke up. Going to his first rave in Golden Gate Park and waking up to a whole new generation of music. Asking to buy a rave machine and walking out with two turntables, a DJ mixer and vinyl from Frequency 8. Going back north to Humboldt to start throwing parties on the beach. Connecting with El Jefe from the band NOFX and started throwing Planet Trance raves in the club with a smoothie bar. Getting offered a job managing the record store and becoming a sushi chef. Post 9/11 the climate shifted and so did Bruce. Moving to living from DJ'ing to healing the ego and starting to produce. Connecting with Pyramind as part of his evolution. Not having the backing to go to music production school. Teaching himself Reason v.1 and doggedly sticking with it. Having business mentors who were a major influence in his career. Going to London to work with his mentor and getting very real advice. Turning the glamor nob down and not being an aspiring producer and owning the title and the role. The importance of "feeling it" and not just going through the motions. Believing in yourself enough to own it. Making the shift from DJ'ing to producing and then producing for others. Having an awakening moment and deciding to cut the cord from the conventional work week. Focusing on personal happiness. Putting happiness first and finding "the spokes on the wheel" to drive it. Starting the label first to help generate clout. Not being able to afford mastering at that time and "just figuring it out". Then the tracks started charting and others started to inquire who was doing the mastering. Started with minimal techno but also composing for ad agencies to help generate working capital. Hustling to do what was needed going from mastering to mixing to producing and now artists development. Meeting Ryan Robbins originally as a client and then eventually having him intern and then working together to help drive the growth of the label. Making Ryan a partner in Fierce Animal Recordings. Years of cumulative experience and realizing the real value in what he had to offer was more than mixing, mastering and production but real artist development consulting. Getting consistent top 50 charting tracks. Cosmic Boys & Maksim Dark are currently two biggest artists. Not listening to the haters and the importance of staying positive. Getting "the crabs out of the bucket". Gifts from the universe to make you fight harder. What it takes to find your "soul song". The commonalities of the human experience and feeling that burning need to express yourself. Studying non-dual Kabbalah as a healer. Coming to the table without the ego and helping artists heal themselves from their limiting beliefs. Coaxing out their soul song and helping them get through failure and seeing it as nourishment. Holding the bitterness and sweetness together in relationship to fully experience life. Going deep with modular synthesis with Ivo Ivanov. The two roads of electronic Music: "Disposable Dance Tracks" and the need to keep writing vs. creating a memorable album in the vein of Daft Punk or Chemical Brothers. Not giving in to any limiting beliefs or fears. Learning to get happy with Covid and using this as a way to wake up to how we treat each other and needing to find a new way. Producing Headroom SF to help bring the Bay Are together and grow the community. Radical honesty over brutal honesty! Track Credits: "Chasing Rabbits" by Bruce Mac Vaughn and Deontology (Ryan Michael Robbins remixed by Mac Vaughn).

This podcast covers Chapter 4, “Taking Advantage of Visible Work” of “12 Steps to Flow: The New Framework for Business Agility,” by Haydn Shaughnessy and Fin Goulding, developers of the internationally acclaimed workshop, Flow Academy. This chapter deals with introducing visible, observable, work. This is the cornerstone for new organizational culture. It provides a framework for collective intelligence and matrix innovation which requires many granular decisions which everyone can see. By having a wall with Post-Its everyone can see the decision points and play a key role based on their know-how.   A key component of Flow is social interactions shape knowledge and support decisions. Doing the work visually supports these interactions and addresses the complexity of projects in a threefold manner: - first off, likes complex anyway and there is no way of getting around - complexity is more easily managed when an approach is used that allows for collective intelligence rather than hierarchies and plans - this can be accomplished using walls and Post-It’s.   An example is provided as to how Samsung one about creating the Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) screen. Two major goals of no backlight and better color saturation were broken down into 50 major problem areas. In turn, these problem areas were broken down into hundreds of problem statements which ended up producing thousands of smaller problems which were essentially viewed as goals which needed to be achieved.   This example was used as an analogy for how Flow works, i.e., instead of problem statements goal statements are used to direct the construction of areas of work and units of work. Addressing these problems visually is superior to creating a grand plan. Visualization and social interaction helps keep everyone on board. Visualization and smaller units of work are effective tools for mastering complexity. The team is free to develop its own culture and interactions that are appropriate for solving the problems.   An interesting point that is made is that many people have emotional intelligence but they lack emotional resilience. Emotional resilience is the ability to stand up for ideas one believes in. Visualization helps people develop emotional resilience. The reason is people can actually see how the work is progressing, or not, which helps them look at the situation in a straightforward manner and develop a collective intelligence. The Walls with the Post-It's create venues where discussions can occur that promote the resilience.   With this approach risk and issues receive greater exposure.   These walls essentially become a visual documentation of the organizations learning.   The authors point out that by having visual manifestation of work it's easy for everyone to observe the work-in-progress to get an idea of how well the project is moving forward. This is especially important when a lot of the work is being performed is brand-new.   It is important to have a wall for the various frames-of-mind appropriate for the project, e.g., the customer innovation wall, and appreciation wall, an executive portfolio, the customer feedback wall, etc. This is referred to as extreme visualization.   The chapter concludes with the steps required to implement extreme visualization are: 1. Sufficient wall space. The corridor that everyone uses is a great space. 2. Anticipate resistance. Coaxing executives to participate can be one of the most difficult aspects of the work. Regardless, it is good start with a customer wall and an executive portfolio wall. 3. Adaptation. See if you can find a pressing project that can serve as a focal point to begin practicing extreme visualization. This will encourage maximum involvement. 4. Research. Customer walls, for example, may require social media research or examination of existing files in order to populate the wall. Likewise, for an executive portfolio wall data from all projects needs to be gathered and displayed. 5. The first draft. It may be difficult and/or uncomfortable to get a particular wall started. This is where a facilitator for the first day or two can be beneficial. Sometimes there may be a team member who happens to be good at facilitation. Use that person but don't let them become too prominent. This is meant to be a team effort. 6. Reporting. Resist the urge to create write ups from the walls. Use photos, not reports. 7. Tools to have on hand: - a learning wall where people can document the learning process - the go to market plan. This provides a valid and disciplined way to think about the market when you're creating products or services. - plenty of Post-It's and markers - a camera. Smartphone may be sufficient. The goal is to routinely take pictures on a daily basis to avoid the temptation of writing things up.   Here are the link for:    episode 0037 of Wrestling with Chaos. the Introduction, The Value Seeking Enterprise, and Chapter 1, Talking About Business Agility: episode 0042 of Wrestling With Chaos. Transforming the Energy of the Mind, Shakta Upaya Yoga Nidra In this Yoga Nidra Session we are practicing a technique called "Shakta Upaya", using the power of the mind to transform the mind. This 1000 year old meditation technique comes from the Shaiva Tantra tradition of Kashmir. Shakta Upaya consisted of purifying the mind to replace misaligned stories, patterns, and triggers with aligned ones. Our emotional states are often linked to subconscious thought patterns. In Sanskrit, these thought patterns are called Vikalpas. Vikalpas are the stories, patterns, and triggers we look to overcome. In this Yoga Nidra Immersion session we are using the power of our own mind to overcome our patterns and stories. This turns the mind from outward turning limited filter for experience into an engine for experiencing our own innate energy of divinity. In a sense we use the mind to stop chasing the mind. Coaxing our mind to think pure thoughts that create clusters of neurons in our brains to reframe the mind. We introduce the pure thought "I am a Beautiful & Loving Person" in this Yoga Nidra.  In the Yogic Tradition, Yoga Nidra is known to restore and cool down the body after a Hatha Yoga Session where it activates the nervous system to absorb the physical asanas. It is also known to improve sleep, good for chronic pain, grief, deep relaxation, PTSD, alleviates anxiety, improves depression, lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, heart rate, and developed mental willpower bringing joy and well being to practitioners. Bestselling besties, Dani Shapiro & Gabby Bernstein, are all over the media with their current bestsellers, Inheritance and Super Attractor. Perhaps you’ve heard them here, on past episodes for prior books. But what you’ve never before witnessed is the two of them TOGETHER. Despite their close friendship and longtime desire to share a mic or stage, this is a first. (Happy dance!) The part of me that lives for literary matchmaking is in full swoon right now. That’s what these two New York Times bestselling authors (of 17+ combined books) do best—raise the bar on what’s possible. Each time I see them hit a new life or career goal, it’s not long before they seem to exceed it—permitting us to follow suit. That doesn’t mean life doesn’t have its hardship, but if you’re buoyed by grace, gratitude, and good cheer, they’re your people. I trust this conversation will make you feel all kinds of hopeful as Dani and Gabby reveal real-world writing strategies with out-of-this-world processes. Feel reassured as they talk about how they tap into their book titles. Pace and format their books. Overcome resistance to create multiple streams of income. I believe you’ll become inspired as they explain how they work within time to EXPAND it (doing less to attract more). And delight in their devotional habits that access magic. Coaxing angelic support might be mentioned, too (wink, wink), including a personal guardian angel story I relive that's REALLY out there. (Shocking, I know.) Gabby's on a first-name basis with the Archangel for Creativity and Communication, and invites you to be, too! All helpful, because as Dani says, "You have to believe you're a writer before the world concurs.” I mean, do you have a better strategy than reaching for the divine? I didn’t think so. Welcome to woo. We're so happy you're here! xo

Today in show #112 I provide some insights into getting sponsors that I have found on my own. 1. Find an advertiser that fits your niche. In my case I found two products that I like and I use. There is no "stretch." These advertisers fit like a glove. 2. I did not lead with the word "podcast." I called it an Internet Radio Show. 3. I provided a sample report from podtrac.com for one of my podcasts. 4. There are many things you can use in negotiation. These include adding a banner on your site, having them generate coupons (to track sales), track the number of clicks to their site (to help calculate ROI); they could set up their product under a different paypal option to track sales. (I use a program called "Cloak and Tracker") The bad news is when I did a google search for "Podcast CPM" I saw number from $30 - $50 (that’s per 1,000 downloads). Let's go "best case scenario" if you had 20,000 downloads per show. If you charged $50 CPM, that is $4,000 per month (if you produced 4 shows per month).  Another Way to Make Money with Your Podcast 1. You could have a premium (no advertising version) using a tool such as www.121podcasting.com 2. You can have a membership area with additional shows, behind the scenes, forum boards and more. Some membership software scripts include: Interlogy Profile Manager (new window) is an interesting program. Very easy to install. You can use it for free, but if you want to charge for memberships, its $200. (One time fee). Easy Member Pro (New Window) Is a very easy to use membership program. It has flexible programs (pricing for 3 months, 6 months, a year, etc). Download Guard (new window) Is a program that is initially designed to protect digital products that you sell, but also can be used for membership sites. AmemberAmember is the tool I use to manage the School of Podcasting. While I've seen prettier interfaces, this works.      Sign up for the School of Podcasting today at www.schoolofpodcasting.com
