Filmmaker and comedian Matthew Highton remembers when Red Dwarf set the agenda for all playground conversations. And he certainly brings his A game to this chat, sharing so much of what he loves about the show - from the fantastic model work, to the endlessly entertaining relationship between Lister and Rimmer. What's more, he gives us not one but three approaches to a fantasy re-cast. His insight into the links between comedy and horror is also on point… which leads us neatly to…Our discussion of series 5 episode 4 - which happens to be Matt's favourite episode! It is, as he says, a densely packed, incredible piece of work. We shine our hex vision onto so much great stuff - from very special effects, to the iconic Mr Flibble, and from amazing sci-fi ideas to beautifully crafted punchlines. Is it peak Dwarf? It may well be. We're certainly quite, quite madly in love with Quarantine. SO WHAT IS IT?Better Than Life is the pod where comedians talk Red Dwarf, the greatest sci-fi sitcom, one episode at a time. With a fresh guest every ep, we're your perfect podcast companion for a first watch or a rewatch. Be warned: spoilers! Hosted by Fergus (huge fan) and John (lapsed fan). If you're reading this then there's a decent chance that at some point in your childhood or early adulthood you sat down on a Friday night and enjoyed the feast of mechanical violence that was Robot Wars. For older Millennials and young Gen Xers watching this show went hand in hand with being a Red Dwarf fan, not least because the host was, from series 2 onwards, Craig Charles himself. And it's for that reason Robot Wars qualifies for our series of 'Dwarf-adjacent' commentaries as we seize with both hands the opportunity to talk at length about a show very dear to our hearts for... quite a long time.Show notes Christopher Wickham's Ludicrously Niche blog posts on Robot Wars. Robot Wars Series 1 trailer, featuring Norman Lovett. Cheesoid hate self. Cheesoid kill self. Yes, there was a Robot Wars Celebrity Special in which Vic Reeves operated Diotoir, and yes it's on YouTube. Ant from Behemoth has a little strop. That time Jeremy Clarkson was nearly decapitated. Craig's other '90s technology-based game show gets the G&TV treatment. Every Craig Charles outro poem, Part 1. Aaaaaand, here's Part 2.

Third Technician David Lister, lowest-ranking member of the Jupiter Mining Corporation vessel Red Dwarf has awaken from stasis millions of years after everyone else onboard was killed due to a radiation leak from an improperly sealed drive plate. Now possibly the last human in existence, Lister must make his way back to Earth aboard this ghost ship with only Holly, the ship's computer, a life form evolved from Lister's pet cat, and a hologram of Second Technician Arnold Rimmer (who was responsible for killing everyone onboard) to keep him sane on his journey back home. Did we mention this is a comedy? Vinnk and Sean reminisce about the first two series of this seminal classic of science fiction, honed with that gormless wit the British do so well. Phil Micallef, Englishman in Prague, keeps it local this week as he speaks to Kristýna Haklová, a Czech stand-up comedian and founder and owner of the comedy promotions brand Velvet Comedy.  She discussed all the key Czech-related issues, such as what Czechs really think of foreigners, what foreigners really think of Czechs, what everyday life was like for her older relatives under Communism, Bill Clinton and former Czech president Václav Havel’s beer-fuelled 90’s bromance and, most importantly, why the age-old stereotypical cliché of Czechs being terrible at customer service, while not strictly being untrue, is certainly unfair!  Kristýna’s 6-month old kitten, Archie, also dropped in (literally, onto the audio recorder) to say „Ahoj!” (yes non-Czechs – that really is how the Czechs use speech marks – mad innit!). Kristýna grew up in the town of Beroun, just to the west of Prague, and has also lived in New Zealand for a couple of years.  As founder, owner, and all-round empress of Velvet Comedy, she has put on many a wonderful comedy show in Prague and other parts of the Czech Republic over the last few years, featuring well-known touring comedians, such as Judah Friedlander, Todd Barry and Norman Lovett, to name just a few.  She also works tirelessly to give opportunities for skill-honing to local Prague-based comedians, such as everyone else who has been on this podcast so far, including me (sorry, I lapsed into the more familiar first person there – Phil will now quietly slip back to the more professional-looking third person form).   Follow Velvet Comedy on Facebook and Instagram for more details about all the wonderful English comedy shows Kristýna is putting on.  Also follow Comedy Prague for details on more fun comedy shenanigans in this most joyous of cities. Richard is reeling from a not really all that near death experience, but luckily Norman Lovett is on hand to provide laconic wisdom and laughs and the kind of honesty that comes with being one of comedy's elder statesmen. There is some frank discussion about Jimmy Savile and what he might have been trying to achieve in those mortuaries, whether Keith Allen can solve the world hunger crisis, what Phillip Schofield likes to do at 3pm and where John Lloyd expects others to buy furniture. There's a bit of Red Dwarf and The Young Ones and the young Edgar Wright, as well as the now customary chat about suicide, but it's mainly an afternoon in the charming company of a funny man. With AIOTM's (aiotm's) Christian Reilly providing some songs.
