David Walliams has been dropped by his publisher over alleged ‘inappropriate' behaviour.A spokesperson for Walliams said that the author had never been informed of any allegations raised against him nor was he given the opportunity to respond to questions about them. He strongly denies that he has behaved inappropriately.Walliams came to prominence starring alongside Matt Lucas in the TV series Little Britain which ran from 2003 - 2006. Critics though accused the comedy show of trading in stereotypes and casual racism. And some of that is evident in Walliam's children's books too. Send us a textWhat if the next chapter of your creative life needed a stage you had to build yourself? We sit down with Steve Furst—comedian, actor, writer, and the man behind cabaret icon Lenny Beige—to share how an eviction notice on a beloved Hampstead room sparked Circle and Star, a new intimate theatre with a big heartbeat. From raising funds at speed to converting favours into an opening season, Steve reveals the practical playbook and the personal resolve it takes to bring a venue back to life.We dig into the why and the how: why Hampstead lost something vital when its small spaces closed, and how a modern theatre can serve both the room and the wider world with streaming, multi-cam capture, and podcast capability. Steve talks candidly about the network that rallied—Matt Lucas, David Walliams, Marcus Brigstocke—and the decision to prioritise community over hype. He also shares the quieter habits that keep him match-fit: Transcendental Meditation as a reset that sharpens presence between shows, and a habit of listening forged by a childhood steeped in classical music.Fans of character comedy will love the peek into his creative toolbox: the Hammond organ's pull (Jimmy Smith, McGriff, McDuff), the communal charge of Northern Soul, and the power of unfussy documentaries that let real people speak. We explore Lenny Beige's continuing life at Circle and Star, including a playful AI assistant voiced as Lenny's mum, and a new project re-examining Fagin—juxtaposing Dickens and Lionel Bart while wrestling with identity and representation. It's part love letter to small theatres, part field guide to building one, and wholly a testament to staying curious, collaborative, and brave. If you care about live arts, new voices, and spaces that make talent possible, this one's for you. Although he's best known for his comedy, David Walliams has a growing portfolio of children's literature. He's sold more than 60 million copies worldwide and has just released his 44th book ‘Santa & Son', just in time for Christmas. He released his first children's book in 2008, and even after 17 years and nearly 50 books, Walliams still finds writing to be a challenging task. “You're constantly scared, you think, oh my god, I'm gonna run out of ideas, or you think, oh god, this is too similar to something I've already done,” he told Mike Hosking. “The thing I try and do is move as far away as I can from something I've just done, because the thing is you just don't want to repeat yourself.” A lot of his earlier works were set contemporary Britain and revolved around schools, and after a while he found he'd run out of ways to make a teacher character work. “I can't think of any more traits that would make teachers funny,” he told Hosking. “So I thought I just have to move away from that and find different stories.” “I sort of have to make it difficult for myself just so I don't end up going down the same path.” When it comes to success, Walliams explains that he's not competitive in any major way. “I don't see other people who do what I do as sort of foes or anything,” he said. “But of course I want my book to be well-received, I want kids to enjoy it, I want it to make people happy.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Click here to try it out!How do you film the unfilmable? That's the challenge at the heart of Michael Winterbottom's Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, a delightfully meta take on Laurence Sterne's famously chaotic 18th-century novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. In this week's episode, the Dads dive into a film that blurs every boundary — between adaptation and behind-the-scenes drama, between actor and character, and between self-awareness and outright parody. Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon play heightened versions of themselves, bickering over screen time, wardrobe choices, and (of course) who does the better impressions. Meanwhile, the “film within a film” takes us through absurd historical reenactments, disastrous prop work, and even a giant model womb.We talk about:Why Sterne's novel was considered “unfilmable” and how the movie leans into that chaos. The deliciously petty dynamic between Coogan and Brydon, and how it later set the stage for The Trip.Cameos from British comedy royalty — Stephen Fry, Dylan Moran, Mark Williams, David Walliams, and more. How the movie juggles philosophical musings, slapstick humour, and industry satire — sometimes all in the same scene.Whether the film is more fun to watch or to talk about. It's part literary experiment, part farce, and part therapy session for Steve Coogan's fragile ego. And while Tristram Shandy might not be everyone's cup of tea, there's plenty to chew on — from postmodern storytelling to the sheer joy of watching talented comedians spark off each other. If you've ever enjoyed The Trip, love films about filmmaking, or just want to hear us wrestle with a movie that refuses to play by the rules, this is an episode you won't want to miss.

Send us a textEvery TV Sitcom yo've ever loved has been touched by this man's genius! What does it take to shepherding some of the most beloved British comedy shows from idea to cultural phenomenon? Jon Plowman OBE—the executive producer behind The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, Vicar of Dibley, Inside No. 9, and countless other comedy classics—offers a rare glimpse into the creative chaos that birthed these iconic programs. From surviving a motorcycle accident that landed him in the hospital (with a parade of celebrities visiting his bedside) to the surreal experience of being interviewed for Oxford University by candlelight during a power outage, Plowman's journey through British television is as unexpected as it is enlightening. His revelation about arriving at a meeting with French and Saunders three weeks before filming to find their "script" consisted of merely four Post-it notes on a wall surrounded by celebrity magazines speaks volumes about the creative genius he helped nurture throughout his career. The most valuable lesson from Plowman's storied career might be his philosophy of "never shouting cut"—allowing the moments between scripted lines and official filming to capture spontaneous comedy gold. This approach led to some of the most memorable moments in shows like Absolutely Fabulous, where improvisation flourished in the spaces between what was written and what naturally emerged on set.Beyond the humorous anecdotes—including the delightfully absurd story of settling a dispute between David Walliams and Matt Lucas about the appropriate size of a certain stain on a jacket lapel during a Little Britain sketch—lies Plowman's profound insight into recognizing and cultivating comedy genius. Whether championing Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's revolutionary mockumentary format for The Office or supporting Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton's anthology vision for Inside No. 9 against network pressures, Plowman's instinct for spotting innovation has shaped decades of entertainment.Ready to discover how the most iconic British comedy shows made it from concept to screen? #555 Welsh Freddie Mercury - Richard has found out the true lyrics of a 1990s pop classic and is going to tell you them in detail. His guests are internet satirists Larry and Paul. They talk about which one is which, the long genesis of their online sketch content, the BBC's reluctance to promote podcasts in 2008 or understand why radio shows needed video, why a Labour government (especially this one) does not mean the end of political satire, impressing Jeremy Vine and potentially insulting Matt Lucas and David Walliams, how Self Esteem being on a delayed train almost led to an embarrassing situation with Carol Vorderman, whether TV is a worthwhile ambition for people making their own content, is it a good idea to have children and Paul (or is it Larry) has come in with some of his own emergency questions, one of which is a little spicy.Support our Kickstarter here https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/467836598/can-i-have-my-ball-backFor Richard's remaining live stand up gigs http://richardherring.com/ballback/tourCome and see RHLSTP live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpFor Larry and Paul's videos https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSrVr5o27krtcuNgjR5RgdwSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. He is best known for his work with David Walliams on the BBC sketch comedy series Little Britain and Come Fly with Me. Lucas first came to prominence on the comedy panel show Shooting Stars, in which he portrayed scorekeeper George Dawes from 1995 to 2009 keeping the scores whilst playing the drums and adding some funny skits along the way.Little Britain is one of Matt's most successful works. Little Britain was originally launched as a radio show on BBC Radio 4 and it later became a TV series.Since then Matt's CV has grown and grown with any TV appearances to Hollywood movies including the latest Blockbuster Gladiator II.Matt tells us about his involvement with the Karen Morris Memorial Trust,of which he is Patron,  a UK charity for Leukaemia patients and their families, a very personal link with this Charity.Matt was raised as Jewish but has variously described himself as an atheist although his views are changing as he grows older in years. Joe's just back from a trip to the Isle of White where he over-ate and also had quite a few compliments from the locals about The Cockfields. Being a big supporter of the RNLI, he also took the opportunity to visit their station in Bembridge and tells David about watching one of the boats launch. Then for some reason, David remembers that David Walliams has swam the English Channel and so they want to find someone who's done that too, to ask them what it's like. Talk then inevitably turns to moving to the Isle of White and also, who gets the ball rolling on discussions about stuff like that with their wives. They then consider loads of other locations across the UK as possibilities to relocate to - so much so that it soon develops into a ‘yes or no' game show.
