Send us a textEvery TV Sitcom yo've ever loved has been touched by this man's genius! What does it take to shepherding some of the most beloved British comedy shows from idea to cultural phenomenon? Jon Plowman OBE—the executive producer behind The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, Vicar of Dibley, Inside No. 9, and countless other comedy classics—offers a rare glimpse into the creative chaos that birthed these iconic programs. From surviving a motorcycle accident that landed him in the hospital (with a parade of celebrities visiting his bedside) to the surreal experience of being interviewed for Oxford University by candlelight during a power outage, Plowman's journey through British television is as unexpected as it is enlightening. His revelation about arriving at a meeting with French and Saunders three weeks before filming to find their "script" consisted of merely four Post-it notes on a wall surrounded by celebrity magazines speaks volumes about the creative genius he helped nurture throughout his career. The most valuable lesson from Plowman's storied career might be his philosophy of "never shouting cut"—allowing the moments between scripted lines and official filming to capture spontaneous comedy gold. This approach led to some of the most memorable moments in shows like Absolutely Fabulous, where improvisation flourished in the spaces between what was written and what naturally emerged on set.Beyond the humorous anecdotes—including the delightfully absurd story of settling a dispute between David Walliams and Matt Lucas about the appropriate size of a certain stain on a jacket lapel during a Little Britain sketch—lies Plowman's profound insight into recognizing and cultivating comedy genius. Whether championing Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's revolutionary mockumentary format for The Office or supporting Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton's anthology vision for Inside No. 9 against network pressures, Plowman's instinct for spotting innovation has shaped decades of entertainment.Ready to discover how the most iconic British comedy shows made it from concept to screen? #555 Welsh Freddie Mercury - Richard has found out the true lyrics of a 1990s pop classic and is going to tell you them in detail. His guests are internet satirists Larry and Paul. They talk about which one is which, the long genesis of their online sketch content, the BBC's reluctance to promote podcasts in 2008 or understand why radio shows needed video, why a Labour government (especially this one) does not mean the end of political satire, impressing Jeremy Vine and potentially insulting Matt Lucas and David Walliams, how Self Esteem being on a delayed train almost led to an embarrassing situation with Carol Vorderman, whether TV is a worthwhile ambition for people making their own content, is it a good idea to have children and Paul (or is it Larry) has come in with some of his own emergency questions, one of which is a little spicy.Support our Kickstarter here https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/467836598/can-i-have-my-ball-backFor Richard's remaining live stand up gigs http://richardherring.com/ballback/tourCome and see RHLSTP live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpFor Larry and Paul's videos https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSrVr5o27krtcuNgjR5RgdwSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. The government has this morning announced that the community mental health team facility is to be relocated from Coaling Island to Sir Joshua Hassan House, on Secretary's Lane. The announcement follows previous plans to move the CMHT to the old Gibraltar Chronicle Printworks. The facility aims to operate as a single point of access which will streamline communications between mental health professionals, external services and other stakeholders. Minister for Health Gemma Arias Vasquez explained the plans in greater detail. Recently declassified documents show that, following the 1988 IRA shootings, the British Government discussed withholding sensitive intelligence from the deceased's family lawyers when the matter came before the European Commission for Human Rights in 1994. Officials expressed concern about the disclosure of a document which referenced intelligence gathering operations in Spain. Our reporter Jonathan Sacramento has read the declassified documents. It's Neurodiversity Celebration Week! Yesterday we discussed Dyslexia with Martin Posso, who's 10 year old son Jack is dyslexic. Today we shine the spotlight on Autism. We spoke to Ellie Sharman who is a person with autism, and Natalie Llufrio, a mother of two children with autism. And, one of Britain's most-loved authors and comedians is coming to the Rock! This morning, 'An Audience With David Walliams' will be held on Thursday 24th April at the Europa Sports Arena. David Walliams is known for his television work from the likes of Little Britain to Britain's Got Talent, and is the author of over 40 best-selling children's books. Today, Danny is joined by Lizzy Roper, a comedian, actress, DJ, the face of Aunt Bessie´s and more. Her grandfather was a Londoner, but her father was born in Spain. When the civil war erupted, they became refugees. Lizzy was born and raised in Whetstone. Lizzy´s career has included numerous stage roles and parts in 63 movies and TV shows, including Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road. As well as a significant period doing stand up alongside Lenny Beige, Matt Lucas, Sasha Barron Cohen, David Walliams and more. She shares some interesting stories, including why she had to learn Middle English to get her equity card, a funny Pink Panther story and tales of an eclectic mix of celebrities, including Tom Baker, John Hurt, Barry Cryer, Leo Sayer and Robbie Williams. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS By the age of 5 Lizzy was already imitating entertainers she saw on TV. She was born to act. In the late 80s, early 90s, London was still affordable, even for struggling actors. London is really a series of little towns that are patched together. In the West End, wherever you look, history hits you in the face. Once you have lived outside of London for a while you forget that the city has its own behavioural norms. The Gielgud Theatre had two previous names. The Regency Rooms was known for its cabaret comedy, but a lot of big bands also played there. Acting in a soap opera requires a different skillset. The insights Lizzie shares about how they make 2.5 hours of TV in under a week are fascinating. BEST MOMENTS “If I go back up there, they tell me I sound like a Cockney t**t.” “It took me a while to get London.” “Do you remember that wonderful word “profit share” that translates to profit loss?” “My acting career took off by going through the back door of Cabaret comedy stand up.” “When I met you, you were running the asylum at the time.” “I know I can do a bit of stand-up, but I could not be a street performer.” “There´s something magical about Liverpool.” “Hollyoaks, it's more dangerous than a Mexican drug cartel.” “I haven´t got the London code anymore.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1575301 https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/lizzie-roper HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking might just be David Walliams' biggest fan — and he couldn't believe it when the comedian surprised him in the studio this morning. Walliams, who is in Auckland for his An Audience with David Walliams tour, sneaked into the Newstalk ZB studio on Friday before his first show, catching Hosking unawares while singing (I've Had) The Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing. When he spotted Walliams, the broadcaster was gobsmacked. “No fricking way, how exciting is that! This is magnificent.” “Hello mate, I've missed you. I worry about you in those tight jeans, a man of your age,” Walliams joked. Walliams met Hosking and his wife, Kate Hawkesby, in London last year, joking with the radio host, “I remember Kate, but not you ... still married?” He revealed the surprise had been in the works for some time “because you have a really huge crush on me, and it would be exciting for you”. “Yes, I do,” Hosking confirmed. When asked how the tour was going so far, Walliams said his shows in Australia had been “fantastic”. “I've been so popular in Auckland that we added this show tonight,” he said. David Walliams paid a surprise visit to the Newstalk ZB studio. Photo / Michael Craig “I've got my funny stories that I've thought about what they are and I'm telling them ... but at the same time, the audiences have been so great in Australia, and I'm sure they'll be even better in New Zealand, they sort of give you permission to kind of push it further and further and just be spontaneous,” the comedian told Hosking. “It's really restored my faith in performing comedy. Like, oh yeah, when we all get together in a room, what we really want is a laugh and it's spontaneous, I've been saying some pretty rude things.” Hosking confessed spontaneity was Hawkesby's worry because she didn't want to be embarrassed from their front-row seats. Walliams jokingly replied that shouldn't be an issue for the radio host. “You look like the kind of man that'd like attention.” “No, I don't want to be part of it, I just want to enjoy your talent,” Hosking responded. Matt and Luke board the TV Time Machine for one final time in 1999 to review 4 not so festive treats from December. Firstly, Martin Clunes stars in an off-kilter comedy drama about the inner workings of a shock TV show entitled 'Sex And Death' Then, there's the only Christmassy-sounding show, in BBC One's sort of family drama Last Christmas starring Pauline Quirke and Ray Winstone. Then, the pair examine the evolution of Graham Norton by looking back at his first Christmas Show as part of So Graham Norton on Channel 4. Lastly, the barely known comedy duo Matt Lucas and David Walliams get their first shot at TV with UK Play's Rock Profile in which the pair play over-the-top versions of Pop stars such as George Michael, the lads from Steps and Michael Jackson and his ever-loyal friend Elizabeth Taylor. Also, Matt tests Luke's music knowledge for the final time with the Christmas Chart of December 99 where Cliff Richard's The Millennium Prayer is still hanging around!

Joe's just back from a trip to the Isle of White where he over-ate and also had quite a few compliments from the locals about The Cockfields. Being a big supporter of the RNLI, he also took the opportunity to visit their station in Bembridge and tells David about watching one of the boats launch. Then for some reason, David remembers that David Walliams has swam the English Channel and so they want to find someone who's done that too, to ask them what it's like. Talk then inevitably turns to moving to the Isle of White and also, who gets the ball rolling on discussions about stuff like that with their wives. They then consider loads of other locations across the UK as possibilities to relocate to - so much so that it soon develops into a ‘yes or no' game show.
