John Lloyd prefers the front end of the yield curve as he waits to see if trade policy worsens and economic growth slows. He likes the credit markets for “attractive starting yields,” saying “a lot can go wrong before you lose total return.” He also thinks active management is important right now.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Whatever happened to funny ads?Have clients stopped buying them?Or have agencies stopped writing them? They used to dominate the ad breaks.Humour was the first tool you reached for after being handed a brief. Why? Well, as that Poppins women says ‘A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down'.Actually…did they dominate ad breaks?Maybe I've slipped on my rose-tinted specs again?I reach for an old D&AD Annual.Randomly, I pick up 1991's.34 tv and cinema ads featured; 28 were funny.Of the 28, the most awarded were for Barclaycard and Red Rock Cider. They feel slightly odd today. They aren't ‘advertising funny', they're actually funny. In a way that I can't imagine them popping up between Bake Off?I don't know whether it's because they don't take the product very seriously? Some even make fun of it. (Imagine; making fun of the very people who pay the bills?)Or maybe getting bigger laughs than the programmes that surround you feels like bad form?Like you have aspirations above your station.I decided to do a bit of rudimentary desk research, discovering that humour is still surprisingly popular. The public love it, apparently.Much preferring it to being lectured to or bullshitted. So why the lack of funny ads?Even ad testing companies are urging us to produce more.(Yes System 1, I'm talking about you.)In an effort to better understand this humour thing, I went straight to the Chairman of the Board, the Grand Fromage, the Capo di Tutti Frutti – John Lloyd. Not only did he shoot both the campaigns above, he'd spent two decades beforehand producing the funniest stuff on tv, including Not The Nine O'clock News, Blackadder and Spitting Image. We had a lovely chat, hope you enjoy it.

It's a huge Miami Open episode of the podcast this week, starting off with former British #1 John Lloyd discussing how Carlos Alcaraz is clicking on all cylindars in Miami. Lloyd assesses Jannik Sinner's game, Andy Murray's unforunate injury luck, and explains why Daniil Medvedev is uniquely entertaining. And Lloyd also dives into Novak Djokovic's decision to part ways with coach Goran Ivanisevic, and what the 24-time major champion's next move might be. Then Monica Puig returns to the show to break down Iga Swiatek's early loss in Miami, and why this could be a real chance for American Danielle Collins. Puig dives into all the contenders in Miami from Elena Rybakina to Victoria Azarenka, and explains why Jessica Pegula is ready to build on her success in 2024. And Puig shares some personal stories from playing an exhibition in her native Puerto Rico with Venus Williams, to completing a 70.3 Ironman triatholon just this month. This week our very special guest is John Lloyd, much admir'd comedy producer and writer, whose credits range from The News Quiz and Quote Unquote on the radio, to Not The Nine O'Clock News, Blackadder, Spitting Image and much much more. At the height of his career he could boast of more BAFTAs than Dame Judi Dench yet so much success took its toll and John freely admits to having suffered a form of mid-life crisis in his forties. Having spent most of the nineties directing highly-acclaimed commercials (such as the Barclaycard series with Rowan Atkinson, later reimagined as Johnny English), John bounced back to mainstream television light entertainment with a show originally conceived as 'The Homework Helper' but which hit our screens in 2003 as QI, hosted by Stephen Fry. John talks about his career and the few brief occasions he worked with Spike Milligan, plus the time he had a crush on Anna Ford, The Spitting Image Golden Brain hunt, writing Dr Snuggles with Douglas Adams, the problems with Blackadder, Mel Smith on Not the Nine O'Clock News, working with Genesis, an early collaboration with Barry Cryer and more!
Today's episode features: Explorer John Lloyd Stephens Sponsored by 2 Complicated 4 History Produced by Primary Source Media
Comedy writer, novelist and playwright Jon Canter joins Tyler this week. He talks about Spike Milligan and some of the people he's had the pleasure of working with over the course of his career, including Miriam Margolyes, Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie, Douglas Adams, Lenny Henry, Richard Wilson, Mel Smith & Griff Rhys-Jones and John Lloyd. They also discuss Margaret Thatcher trying comedy and Prince Charles dancing to Hot Stuff. It's a packed show folks!
Endless inflation seems to be everywhere at the moment, including on this episode examining the nature of infinity. Brian and Robin dive through the back catalogue to discover there might be no limit to the number of parallel universes that exist. This leads to an argument between astronomer royal Lord Rees and comedy producer John Lloyd, who says the whole suggestion is total speculation. Even cosmologist Carlos Frenk can't get his head round the idea, as he contemplates the suggestion that new big bangs may be happening all the time. Episodes featured: Series 10: Before the Big Bang Series 6: Parallel Universes Series 21: Quantum Worlds Series 9: To Infinity and Beyond Series 10: Numbers Numbers Everywhere New episodes will be released on Wednesdays, but if you're in the UK, listen to new episodes, a week early, first on BBC Sounds: bbc.in/3K3Jzy Producer: Marijke Peters Executive Producer: Alexandra Feachem
Comedy writer Andrew Marshall is this week's special guest. Andrew, along with former writing partner (and Goon Pod guest) David Renwick, wrote for Spike Milligan in the eighties but is perhaps best known for the television programmes 2.4 Children, Alexei Sayle's Stuff, Whoops Apocalypse (and its film spinoff), Hot Metal and The Burkiss Way for radio. More recently he and Rob Grant have created the Quanderhorn series for Radio 4. He talks about the relationship he and David developed with Spike and what influence Milligan has had on him. Having sold his first comedy idea at a very early age, Andrew has barely stopped working and we discuss many of the best-known (and some lesser-remembered) projects he's been attached to. Andrew talks about the sheer joy he experienced making Alexei Sayle's Stuff, the relative freedom he was given to make 2.4 Children and the challenges he, cast and crew faced making Health & Efficiency in the early nineties. He also acknowledges his own unwitting contribution to the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy universe, his friendships with both Douglas Adams and John Lloyd and speaks at length about his working relationship with David Renwick. And fans of the film Wilt will be pleased to hear that we talk about that too!

The death of everything: no ROFLing matter. Right? Well probably yes. But can chuckles save the planet? Does laughing at humans being silly confused bags of water help the climate fight or take the heat out of it? And just why is so much climate comedy, well, crap? Joining Dave this episode is a right proper comedy mastermind, Stuart Goldsmith. Stuart's spent aeons both behind the mic as a stand-up, and peering at other comics via interviews in his legendary The Comedian's Comedian podcast. He's drunk heavily from the comedy well, and knows more about the art (science? craft?) of rib-tickling than just about anyone. And - [applause, cheers] - Stuart now reckons he might spend the rest of his career doing comedy about climate change, such is his commitment to the cause. This year is the 40th birthday of the TV show that changed Tony's life. Since playing Baldrick in Blackadder, he's still routinely asked in the street if he'd like a turnip. Blackadder was first broadcast on 15th June 1983, so today Tony has decided to test himself to see if he can find out something that he didn't already know about the series, with John Lloyd, who was the producer of Blackadder. John went on to create Have I got News for You and QI but, like Tony, it all started with the Adder.
