In this deeply reflective episode of It Takes Balls, testicular cancer survivor David Rimmer shares a powerful story of diagnosis, survivorship, and resilience that spans more than 30 years. Diagnosed in 1992 at age 32, long before awareness campaigns or internet support groups, David navigated cancer with little guidance, learning to advocate for himself and seek out the best possible care. From his initial orchiectomy to his choice to travel to Indiana University for a retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) under the legendary Dr. Donohue, David walks listeners through the confusion, trauma, and empowerment that defined his treatment journey. He discusses the impact of possible infertility, the psychological toll of recovery, and the importance of acting as a “medical consumer” to ensure the highest level of care.David's story doesn't end with testicular cancer. In the years that followed, he faced multiple additional diagnoses - chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), basal cell carcinoma, and low-grade prostate cancer. Yet through it all, he has maintained a sense of perspective, purpose, and humor. He opens up about how survivorship reshaped his identity, the long shadow cancer casts over even the cleanest scans, and how he finds comfort in staying proactive with his health.A near-death experience during a midair collision over the Amazon adds a surreal layer to David's story - a reminder that surviving isn't just about beating disease, but about what we do with the time we're given. Now, he gives back through bone marrow and stem cell courier missions.Whether you're newly diagnosed, decades into remission, or supporting someone through cancer, David's voice is a reminder of how survivorship evolves over time, and how sharing your story might be the most powerful form of healing.Join The Ball Room:https://www.testicularcancerawarenessfoundation.org/theballroomWant to be a guest? Is it ever justified for the Government to secure a superinjunction in the face of a perceived risk to the life and limb of countless individuals caused by human error? A catastrophic data leak in February 2022 exposed over 18,000 Afghan applicants for resettlement in the UK to violent retribution by the Taliban and a superinjunction granted in August 2023 prevented Parliament and the public from knowing what had happened. Public law specialist, solicitor Daniel Carey has spent years litigating on behalf of Afghan allies left behind after the Taliban takeover in August 2021, confronting a bewildering and overwhelmed Government bureaucracy, flawed risk assessments, and a system marred by secrecy and delay. He joins Ken Macdonald KC and Tim Owen KC on Double Jeopardy to discuss how his experience reveals fundamental problems in the UK's Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP) and raises urgent questions about the proper role of superinjunctions in national security matters and whether Parliament in some form had a right to know about a catastrophe involving risk to life as well as huge financial consequences. They interrogate the government's decision to keep Parliament in the dark, the controversial court rulings on freedom of expression, and the impact of the Rimmer report which led to the lifting of the superinjunction and the closure of all the Afghan resettlement scheme despite a continuing risk to life. This is an episode rich in expert legal commentary and essential context for anyone seeking to understand how UK politics, the rule of law, and the legal system intersect in moments of national crisis. Link to judgments can be found here. --- Covering the critical intersections of law and politics in the UK with expert commentary on high-profile legal cases, political controversies, prisons and sentencing, human rights law, current political events and the shifting landscape of justice and democracy. With in-depth discussions and influential guests, Double Jeopardy is the podcast that uncovers the forces shaping Britain's legal and political future. What happens when law and politics collide? How do politics shape the law - and when does the law push back? What happens when judicial independence is tested, human rights come under attack, or freedom of expression is challenged? And who really holds power in Britain's legal and political system? Get answers to questions like these weekly on Wednesdays. Double Jeopardy is presented by Ken Macdonald KC, former Director of Public Prosecutions, and Tim Owen KC, as they break down the legal and political issues in Britain. From high-profile legal cases to the evolving state of British democracy, Double Jeopardy offers expert legal commentary on the most pressing topics in UK law, politics, and human rights. Ken Macdonald KC served as Director of Public Prosecutions from 2003-2008, shaping modern prosecutorial policy and advocating for the rule of law. He is a former Warden of Wadham College, Oxford, a crossbench member of the House of Lords, and a leading writer, commentator and broadcaster on politics and the rule of law. Tim Owen KC has been involved in many of the most significant public, criminal and human rights law cases over the past four decades. Time Finance PLC (AIM:TIME) CEO Ed Rimmer takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through the company's performance in the third quarter, highlighting a record gross lending book and improved arrears management. Rimmer explained that Time Finance provides funding solutions to small businesses, including invoice finance, asset finance, and secured loans, typically supporting businesses with turnover up to £10 million. He said, “We help businesses grow, but we also help businesses to survive as well.” The company's lending book reached a record £210 million at the end of February, with arrears falling to 5% from 6% a year earlier. Rimmer noted this progress came despite challenging market conditions and was achieved without compromising credit quality. Margins have also increased, with profit margins now at 40%. This was attributed to tight cost control and improved efficiency, including leveraging technology and streamlining internal processes. Time Finance has not increased its headcount significantly post-COVID, which has helped support margin growth. Rimmer also addressed the broader economic environment, pointing to interest rate pressures, inflation, and increased insolvencies, but emphasised that small businesses remain resilient. The company sees opportunity as traditional banks become more risk-averse, creating space for independent lenders. Visit Proactive's YouTube channel for more interviews like this. Broadway World"The show has many important things to say about the way women are seen in society as they age, and there are many more things that could be said. By presenting these ideas through a warm, funny and straight-talking character, we are able to receive them clearly and entertainingly. This is a show that connects with its audience in the relatability of its situations and characters, and which has much to offer all ages and genders." Theatreview "Nicola Cheeseman is Back is a fucking funny and wondrously observant play about not letting age get you down. Jodie Rimmer is such a star who's exquisite portrayal of this fiery, courageous women makes me regret she's fictional coz I'd love to meet her in real life. But then again, when I think about her courage, her introspection, her wit, her creativity, and the type of woman she represents, I realise, I have already met her." Andrew Whiteside Support the show

Acclaimed standup, animator, filmmaker and children's author Alasdair Beckett-King cannot overstate how much of a Red Dwarf fan he was back in the day. Case in point: he was angered by CGI Starbug in the way only a true fan can be. The show even influenced his taste in food… and his accent! He loved rekindling his youthful obsession for the podcast. Turning our focus to series 5 episode 5, Demons and Angels, we cover all the ‘highs' and ‘lows', including: hilarious high Kryten, evil horny Rimmer, grotesque comic violence, fantastic miniatures, absent audiences, action hero Lister, that laugh, those fangs, and the rock n roll comedy swagger of Grant and Naylor. Jeri Taylor- (June 30, 1938 to October 24, 2024) was a screenwriter and producer for many TV shows, including Star Trek The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. In dedication to her memory, we're talking about three of her scripted episodes. In ‘Night Terrors,' the Enterprise crew are having trouble sleeping and people's REM levels are dropping (insert your own Radiohead joke here, we did) and it's making everyone go a little crazy. Meanwhile, Neelix gets into true crime for his early morning TV show in ‘Investigations' and bites off more than he can chew while uncovering a traitor in the midst. Then back to the Enterprise for ‘The Drumhead' which gave us one of the more infamous Picard facepalm memes, but is it enough to put it at Number One on the Big List? If not, you might find yourself on trial for subversion!Episodes Discussed: Night Terrors (14:02), Investigations (39:29) and The Drumhead (01:01:50).Talking Points Include: Elementary, Ranma 1/2, The Clash, the joys of lighting hydrogen on fire, Silent Hill-esque horror, we get another ‘The Rimmer of the Enterprise' in Gillespie, some surprising scenes of Worf trying to unalive himself and can Data do white noise to help with sleep? Voyager's bad workplace politics, would Neelix be a Murderino? Voyager trying to bring a unwanted subplot that we don't really understand to a conclusion, we're not in the mood for McCarthy-ism in the Drumhead but that's okay, this episode has all the subtlety of a brick, Joseph McCarthy is the WORST person to come out of Wisconsin, but who are the best people to come from Wisconsin?
Filmmaker and comedian Matthew Highton remembers when Red Dwarf set the agenda for all playground conversations. And he certainly brings his A game to this chat, sharing so much of what he loves about the show - from the fantastic model work, to the endlessly entertaining relationship between Lister and Rimmer. What's more, he gives us not one but three approaches to a fantasy re-cast. His insight into the links between comedy and horror is also on point… which leads us neatly to…Our discussion of series 5 episode 4 - which happens to be Matt's favourite episode! It is, as he says, a densely packed, incredible piece of work. We shine our hex vision onto so much great stuff - from very special effects, to the iconic Mr Flibble, and from amazing sci-fi ideas to beautifully crafted punchlines. Is it peak Dwarf? It may well be. We're certainly quite, quite madly in love with Quarantine. American podcaster, writer and comedian Travis McElroy has been a fan of Red Dwarf since it started airing on PBS. He has such a unique take on the boys from the Dwarf as a surrogate family, he really made us see the show in a different light. He gently challenges easy assumptions about how the crew relate to each other and why they say the things they do. Travis also reveals why Rimmer is his favourite - and a much better person than you might think. He's super insightful on chameleon Lister, too - listener, you're in for a treat! When we get into series 5 episode 3, Terrorform, Travis is right inside all the best bits. Like… Why Robert Llewelyn is the best at Krytening. The “taranshula”. Lister's oscillating intelligence. The psi moon and Doctor Who logic. How much value is added by the canoe. In this week's episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast I get to chat with Paul Rimmer (athlete_lab_uk). Paul is an expert in testing athletes to help them find their true performance capabilities. I went to see him recently for lactate threshold testing and I thought it would be useful to get him on the podcast to talk about the work he does with athletes. We cover different ways to determine your lactate threshold pace, how this testing can influence your HYROX training, the steps you can be taking to improve your threshold running pace, and lots more. It was a great chat with loads of good information to help improve your HYROX performance.

Andrew O'Neill knows the exact date they got into Red Dwarf, telling us “it was exactly ‘me' flavoured”. Surely we can all relate? And, refreshingly, they're a proper fan of the Dave era episodes! Andrew is very insightful on why the show is perfect for young people… and metalheads. Series 4 episode 5, Dimension Jump, raises some interesting questions. Listener, would you like your own “Ace” if you met them? What are the moments in our lives when possible versions of ourselves diverge? And how self-aware do you think Rimmer is? We also chat about Chris Barrie's charismatic transformation, the “Grant Naylor look”, taramasalata vs hummus, in-flight magazines, and kippers. In this episode, I tell the story of Paul Norfolk, a 77-year-old man killed in Haverhill, Suffolk, in December 2011. Paul lived in his semi-detached home with his wife, Esme, and her carer, 49-year-old Thailand native Bunthawee Rimmer, until Esme was moved to a residential home when her health drastically deteriorated after suffering a stroke. Rimmer claimed she then began a sexual relationship with Paul, which ultimately led to him signing over his house and entire estate, worth around £340,000, to her in late 2011. In the early hours of December 30, Rimmer murdered Paul by striking him in the head twelve times with a claw hammer. She then attempted to end her own life but was arrested and taken to a hospital in Cambridge to be treated for her injuries. A jury at Ipswich Crown Court found her guilty of murder by way of a majority verdict in July 2012, and she was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 11 years.
