Can You Feel It?It's July, 1989 and the temperature is hot! Actually, for a lot of the UK it surprisingly was, but let's leave meteorological memories aside, we're talking the dancefloor. The country, the WHOLE nation was completely right on one, matey. Well maybe not the entire nation, but there was no doubt that the BPMs were sweeping the nation much quicker than the BSB squarial was in the last summer of the eighties. As 1988 became 1989, the underground was rapidly moving overground. The house sound of Chicago and Detroit had landed on our sceptred isle and we were making it out own. Artists such as The Beatmasters, Coldcut and Mark Moore's S-Express had stamped their authority on the charts and across the country as teens were pouring over Smash Hits for the lyrics of Inner City tracks and swapping mixtapes of the latest grooves. And, NOW That's What I Call Music were THERE!Well, yes they were, but that's not the whole story. Get on the dancefloor legendary compilers K-tel and new variously compiled whippershappers from Telstar, who (for once) were ahead of the compilation curve. Albums series such as Deep Heat (in those large cassette boxes Discog fans!) were bringing the cool kids a real mix of dance, hip hop and sounds from both sides of the Atlantic. So what did our friends at EMI/Virgin do? What they always do - respond, and then some!Join author, journalist, compiler and all round dance music fanatic Joe Muggs as we revisit the explosive dancefloor culture of summer 1989 though the lens of NOW Dance 89. Rediscover some iconic tracks from Inner City, Soul II Soul and Coldcut. Remember (because you may have forgotten) the VERY 89 sound of Hip House with the likes of The Cookie Crew, Merlin and (awesome super duper) Tyree. Find out how NOW navigated a groove between the mainstream and the emerging underground through some amazing 12” mixes and laid a blueprint for the impending sound of the 90s, and indeed an unavoidable cultural shift into the next century of pop and beyond. And if that wasn't enough, find out which dance icon Joe sought out an autograph from, how the legendary producer Youth may have missed a chance to be on The Fast Show, which track brings tears to mothers eyes at Big Fish Little Fish discos and why we need the uplifting and uniting experience of house music now more than ever.People, hold on! My guest today is the writer Charlie Higson, author of On His Majesty's Secret Service, the latest Bond continuation novel. Written to coincide with King Charles's coronation and the 60th anniversary of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the book brings Bond into the modern era in a narrative that identifies very real geopolitical threats with some good old Bondian adventure.  For those of you to whom the name Charlie Higson his familiar, that's because he was one of the writers and performers of The Fast Show, a cult British comedy show from the mid-90s. In this episode, Charlie and I discuss his literary tastes through the four books that have shaped his work, as well as his creative practices, and of course the way to achieve a new rendition of the world's most fabulous spy. Modern Bond is less anchored in mid-Century wartime solemnity, and more attuned to the nuanced global landscape of 2024, which made for a really refreshing read. From his diverse reading selections to his personal take on the character, Charlie's insights were both enriching and hilarious. Whether you're a Bond enthusiast or just generally a lover of literary discussions, this episode is an absolute treasure trove of insight and inspiration – and not one to be missed! Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Charlie's four books were: Gormenghast, Mervyn Peake (1946-59) Pop 1280, Jim Thompson (1964) The Watcher, Charles Maclean (1982) From Russia with Love, Ian Fleming (1957)

A title race!? In July!? With no Shamrock Rovers!? With THEIR reputation! No, it's not Roly from "The Fast Show" but our two regulars who are joined by sometime RTE co-commentator and very busy all rounder Paul Corry to discuss, dissect, analyse and eulogise the demise of the Shamrock Rovers title challenge. Is it goalkeeper problems? Where's the manager's head at? Transfers? And is their best chance this season in Europe? All of these questions in the hand-stitched mailbag are pondered by our crew. Dan, who arrived almost on time to our virtual studio, takes time out from his busy sightseeing schedule to cast his eye over the games from his brief return home while Johnny's co-commentating is analysed by our listeners. It's a Rovers-heavy show with both Sligo and Shamrock featuring heavily but we do get to the other contenders and Corry nails his colours to the mast while Johnny looks optimistically at third place. We've made it to July and all because Collar & Cuff, Future Ticketing, Lilly's Childcare and Rascals Brewery continue to throw us enough magic beans that we hope to someday grow a beanstalk. It's the hope that kills you, it's episode 21 and there's no party in Tallaght!

Joining Stuart in our Salford studio are Charlie Higson. After writing several books in the bestselling 'Young Bond' series, Charlie has written his first Bond for Adults. Stand up Bilal Zafar's new show 'Imposter' is about a once harmonious house-share that goes very wrong and Pravesh Kumar has written 'Frankie Goes to Bollywood', a new musical about an everyday girl from Milton Keynes plucked from obscurity to live the life of a bollywood star.Music this week comes from English Teacher, dubbed 2024's hottest new guitar band, and tik-tok sensation, classical guitarist Alexandra Whittingham.Presenter: Stuart Maconie Producer: Jessica TreenCHARLIE HIGSON Charlie Higson is an author, actor, comedian and writer for radio and television. He is the author of five beloved Young Bond books, starting with Silverfin in 2005. He's also the author of the ‘Enemy' series of Young adult Zombie adventures and the crime thriller ‘Whatever Gets You Through The Night'. He's also one of the brains behind one of the best comedy series of the 90's, ‘The Fast Show', which recently completed a 30th anniversary tour.A New Bond for a new Monarch, Charlie Higson's first ‘Adult' Bond – On His Majesty's Secret Service was written in double quick time for the coronation and is inspired by researching his history podcast. Higson's Bond is very much a man of 2023 – he's in tune with his gut biome, but he's still got the car, the gadgets and the girl.ENGLISH TEACHER Leeds based ‘English Teacher' have been hailed as 2024's hottest new guitar band, but they've spent time honing their craft - they've been playing together since meeting at the University of Leeds at 2018. In April they released their debut album, This Could Be Texas. Fresh from from touring America, they are vocalist Lily Fontaine, guitarist Lewis Whiting, drummer Douglas Frost, and bassist Nicholas Eden.PRAVESH KUMAR Back in the year 2000 armed with a credit card, Pravesh Kumar started the Rifco theatre company with an aim to tell accessible stories about British Asian communities like the one he grew up in in slough. Rifco's shows include the musical Britain's Got Bhangra, The Deranged Marriage and the film Little English. Along the way, Pravesh was awarded an MB for his contribution to British Theatre. His latest musical is ‘Frankie Goes to Bollywood' – the story of Frankie, played by Laila Zaidi, a normal girl plucked from obscurity in Milton Keynes to be the latest Bollywood star. Frankie is taken in by the glamour, a romance with leading man Raju King and a rivalry with a fellow Bollywood actress no longer deemed young enough.ALEXANDRA WHITTINGHAM Manchester-born Guitarist Alexandra Whittingham started with humble beginnings performing covers of Avril Lavigne and auditioning for Blackpool's Got Talent. Since then she has become a viral sensation through videos of her performing breathtaking classical arrangements on her guitar.Fresh off of signing with a major music label, Decca, she's here to tell us about her journey to becoming a revered guitarist and why it's important that classical music is accessible to everyone.BILAL ZAFARSharing a house can be an unpredictable experience, we've all heard about ‘nightmare' housemates. In Bilal Zafar's new show ‘Imposter' he tells the story of his old housemate, a story of compulsive lying, escalating threats and minty hot chocolate. Bilal is a ‘wry storyteller'; his previous shows are ‘Zafarcakes', about a joke on twitter that got out of hand, and the people who couldn't take a joke and ‘Care', about looking after wealthy residents in a care home, for minimum wage. He's also active on the Twitch streaming platform where he plays a manager from the game Pro Evolution Soccer 5 to an enthusiastic audience of ‘Assistant Managers'. Bilal won the new act of the year award in 2016 and was nominated for best Newcomer at the Edinburgh comedy awards

Our second Goon-related podcast of the series, so who better to join Rob and Guy to talk about all things Peter Sellers, A Show Called Fred, and The Mouse That Roared, than host of The Goon Pod, Tyler Adams? There was expert insight galore as BritCom Goes to the Movies tackled its earliest film yet.   An early high-concept outing for Sellers' many faces and voices on the big screen as he channeled his inner Alec Guinness to play three of the main characters in this Anglo-American cult classic (not the first one of those we've profiled in this series either).   There are many unexpected mentions of The Simpsons, Alan Partridge and The Fast Show, proving just how long a shadow Peter Sellers has cast on the comedy world for decades.   Guy had a huge lead over Rob in the quiz coming into this episode, with only one more to go, Rob would need to buck up his ideas…and quickly!   A Show Called Fred – 1956 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbWbz1Z0q3M   The Mouse That Roared – Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7L7WLFBYR4   The Mouse That Roared – Full Movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfD_LTad1hE   Coldland - Shooting Stars  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgYgXl5AxQA   Passport To Pimlico - Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=634VTm9y1Eo   Theatre of Blood - Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S94e43JIgHc   Holmes & Yo-Yo - Opening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeJd7j-Rhtg

In this episode we welcome Fast Show legend Simon Day to downtown Hammersmith and ask him about his musical passions and the immortal Life Of Rock With Brian Pern. We start with our guest's misspent youth in south-east London, where he frequently saw bands such as Dr. Feelgood and local lads Squeeze and even fronted his own punk combo Simon & the Virgins. We hear about his early days on the standup circuit and his close associations with Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer and the gang that coalesced around The Fast Show. From there we discuss the genesis of his "prog'n'roll" alter ego Brian Pern and his affectionate lampooning of Peter Gabriel. Clips from a 2003 audio interview with Steely Dan prompt an in-depth conversation about Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker. During this, Simon tells us how he first fell for the arch duo and we collectively compare notes on some of the group's greatest songs and albums. After a brief mention of featured writer Dorian Lynskey and his new book Everything Must Go, Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and Beatles hairdresser Leslie Cavendish before Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on M. People's Heather Small and a particularly cantankerous Van Morrison. Many thanks to special guest Simon Day. Pieces discussed: Genesis Doing The Foxtrot, Genesis: No "Pale" Imitation, Seventies prog rockers Genesis are back, but are they welcomed?, All Apologies: Brian Pern, Steely Dan audio, Wayne Robins on the RBP podcast, Pete Seeger, Kendrick Lamar, Why do pop stars fall for conspiracy theories?, Dorian Lynskey on the RBP podcast, Mötley Crüe, Beatles hairdresser Leslie Cavendish, Elvis, The King Remembered — An oral history, Heather Small: Proud, Los Campesinos!, and A duel with Van Morrison.

Why do comedians keep siding with the Establishment?

Recording of a debate at the Battle of Ideas festival 2023 on Sunday 29 October, at Church House, London. Subscribe to the Academy of Ideas Substack for more information on the next Battle and future events: https://clairefox.substack.com/subscribe INTRODUCTION At the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Comedy Unleashed's show, featuring Graham Linehan, was cancelled because the venue did not ‘support his views' and his presence would ‘violate their space'. The edgy spirit that used to characterise the Edinburgh Festival Fringe specifically, and stand-up comedy more generally, seems to have evaporated. There was no outcry from comedians attending the festival and very few publicly expressed even the mildest of support for free expression in the arts. Earlier that year, Nigel Farage was debanked by Coutts, for expressing views that go against the bank's ‘values'. Despite the bankers themselves having admitted fault, comedian Omid Djalili publicly sided with the elite bank. When comedians see no problem with using the denial of banking services as a form of punishment for holding certain views, how can they claim that they are ‘punching up'? Why do comedians increasingly side with the Establishment? How can comics say that they are ‘punching up' when they support the people being ‘cancelled' by corporations? As society becomes more authoritarian, where is the satirical response and creative backlash? SPEAKERS Miriam Elia satirical conceptual artist; author, We See the Sights, We Go To The Gallery and We Do Lockdown; creator, A Series Of Psychotic Episodes Dominic Frisby writer; comedian; author, Bitcoin: the future of money? It's a 'Red Letter Day' here in the Good Listening To Show 'Clearing', as I welcome a personal comedy hero to the Show!  Delighted to welcome Charles Murray Higson - aka Charlie Higson - born in 1958 in Frome and billed as "That man off of The Fast Show" and credited by The Daily Mail as being both "An idiot and a disgrace!"Charlie is life-long comedy foil of the likes of Paul Whitehouse,  Mark Williams, John Thompson, Arabella Wier (& the now sadly departed Caroline Aherne) who together make up the splendid ensemble and co-creators of the iconic British TV Comedy Classic, "The Fast Show". Within a week of our recording together "The Fast Show" is all set to go on a smash-hit SOLD OUT tour of the UK as a stage-show. (And listen as a little bit of wee comes out (!) as Charlie offers me a ticket on the Guest list, when The Fast Show comes to Bristol! He'll definitely be getting an email!)Charlie Higson is a an extremely talented polymath. He is a prolific Author, including 5 of the "Young Bond" series, having been commissioned by the Fleming Foundation to take up the mantle) He is also an Actor, Comedian & Podcaster. His Podcast "Willy Willy Harry Stee" is Charlie's History of the English Monarchy, inspired by the mnemonic verse which he rote learned and remembers from school. It's quite a "Fast Show" (see what I'm doing there?!) as there's quite a lot to talk about! This is what AI thinks we talked about!Have you ever wondered what stirs in the mind of a comedy genius? Picture this: Charlie Higson, a man of many creative masks, sits down with us and, with a wit as sharp as a scalpel, slices open the belly of the creative beast. He regales us with tales from the upcoming "Fast Show" tour, sharing how "Painting with Johnny" and other beloved characters are shortly to be resurrected night-after-night to the joy of sold-out crowds.Charlie doesn't just tickle our funny bones; he delves into his diverse trajectory - from punk rocker to actor to the man who breathes new life into the world of James Bond, both young and old. It's not all fun and games, though. Well, maybe it is – but with a hefty dash of nostalgia and reverence. Charlie pays homage to the comedic titans who paved his path, the likes of Monty Python, and admits that their imprint on his humor is as indelible as ink. He recounts the serendipity of meeting Paul Whitehouse, a kindred spirit in jest, at university and how it shaped their dynamic comedy duo. Even the bittersweet distraction of social media gets a nod, as Charlie admits to its allure, while also recognizing its role in today's narrative tapestry. You can also Watch/Listen to Charlie's wonderful episode here:https://vimeo.com/chrisgrimes/charliehigsonTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. She hadn't imagined that decades after the Fast Show comedy sketch Scorchio, the stereotype of the 'weather girl' still held firm. Despite degrees in meteorology and physics or Met Office training, female weather presenters were still seen as dizzy sidekicks to the news anchor, legitimate targets to be sexualized by the media and harassed. Sam puts down her clicker and asks why is the ‘weather girl' one of the most fetishized roles in popular culture. She hears about the arrival of women into the industry from John Kettley, one of the first weather presenter gods; the role of Bill Giles' belly in gender equality from ITV's Sian Lloyd and about the impact on industry of the fun, sexy, flirty and most enticingly Swedish presenter Ulrika Jonsson. And Sam discovers how if they do not live up to the ‘weather girl' image, they are shamed for wearing glasses, being too fat, or as one celebrity shamelessly tweeted “MASSIVELY too ugly” for the job. Sarah Leigh Barnett recounts how she was publicly insulted by Boris Johnson when she started presenting; Kate Kinsella the impact of being bombarded with porn on her and her family; and Reham Khan how the term ‘weather girl' is weaponized against her in Pakistan, used to suggest she too ignorant and immoral to be in politics. Adam Lawrence is a fantastic portrait photographer based In London who made his name in the britpop / cool Britannia era of 1990's Britain. More recently, he's become a specialist in composite group photographs. These are the kind of images that promote a new tv show where each cast member is photographed individually and put together into one seamless group shot and placed in an environment they may never have stood in in real life. Willy Willy Harry Stee is Charlie Higson's guide to the monarchy, all based on a rhyme he learned at school which, helpfully, gave an easy way to remember the names of every King & Queen of England. Unhelpfully it didn't teach you anything else about them, something this weekly podcast will help rectify. In this first episode, Charlie, who you may know as creator of and actor in The Fast Show and Down The Line, author of the Young Bond and Enemy series and recently the brand new James Bond novel 'On His Majesty's Secret Service' brings us part one of the backstory to the very first monarch, William The 1st or William The Conqueror as he's better known. To help make sense of this Charlie invited his friend Tom Holland who you may know from the top rated podcast The Rest Is History. So, settle down and enjoy 4000 years of history in one convenient podcast! Brilliant! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
