Greg Jenner is joined in Victorian England by Dr Isabella Rosner and comedian Cariad Lloyd to learn all about the ethos, practitioners and creations of the Arts and Crafts movement. Most people have heard of William Morris, one of the leaders of the Arts and Crafts movement that came to prominence in England in the last decades of the 19th Century. His abstract, nature-inspired designs still adorn everything from wallpaper and curtains to notebooks and even dog beds. And the company he founded, Morris & Co., is still going strong. But the history of this artistic movement, and the other creatives who were involved, is less well known.Arts and Crafts, which advocated a return to traditional handicrafts like needlework, carpentry and ceramics, was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and included a strong socialist vision: its practitioners wanted everyone to have access to art, and to be able to enjoy homes that were comfortable, functional and beautiful. This episode explores Morris and other creatives both in and outside his circle, including Edward Burne-Jones, May Morris, Gertrude Jekyll and Philip Webb. It looks at the ethos that inspired them, the homes and artworks they created, and asks how radical their political beliefs really were. This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode. Russell Howard’s Wonderbox

I tell you what's fun to listen to: someone who loves cake, talking passionately about cake. Griefcast's Cariad Lloyd sits with Russell and waxes lyrical about Pavlova and wider cakes. There's more! We get all down and dirty with the Moomins and then there's a weird bit where Cariad and Russell start acting out passages from Labyrinth. Which music star was originally slated to play Jareth? It wasn't Bowie… the answer lies in this terrific episode. Cariad talked in the podcast about her book, the Christmas Wish-tastrophe, and that is available now, and if you know an 11-14 year old just get them this for Christmas. Then that one is done, another one off your list. They will read and enjoy it.  You can get that book at your local independent bookshop, or google the name of the book and choose an independent book provider online. You can do this! Don't just default to the monolithic behemoths! Cariad's regular podcast is Griefcast, where she talks to all manner of people about the various ways people deal with life when things are tough. Cariad is an absolutely incredible host and it's a wonderful podcast, whether you yourself are struggling or not. Check it out HERE.  In this week's Patreon show of Five Brilliant Questions, Cariad answered some deep knowledge questions about Gondor (It's Lord of the Rings apparently. I have no idea). She also reveals what kind of hat she would be (as always, really probing questions from you guys) and Russell has a crisis about hat-wearing in general.  Go to: patreon.com/RussellHoward to get involved. We're absolutely fine but…we might have a bit of September dread. Not that shiny new term feeling, with a fat pencil case and a fresh notebook, but more of a 'holy fuck it is only four months until 2025 and what have we achieved!?!' kinda thing. Anyway to lessen the load we put together the best bits from two wise souls we talked to this year. Psychotherapist Emma Reed Turrell, whose book What Am I Missing? is about why, after years of therapy, we sometimes still find ourselves stuck. She unpicks some of the knottiness that holds us back through four blind spot profiles: Are you a rock, a hustler, a gladiator or a bridge? We warn you: they are horribly resonant. And next we have the lovely Cariad Lloyd. Sadly, her father died suddenly when she was 15 and, after years of floundering, she took her grief and turned it into a beautiful living thing: her award-winning podcast Griefcast and her wonderful book You Are Not Alone, which is out in paperback. We talk grief myths, why the process doesn't happen in a straight line, how to support people who have lost someone and why all that really matters is showing up…Anyway, this is not a self-help podcast but we hope it helps. Let us know how you are doing. And we'll see you in September…PS: It's our 200th episode…thank you so much for listening. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sara Pascoe has a magic ability to take life's absurdities and turn them into comedy gold, but how does she approach change? Sara's quick, intelligent wit has seen her competing on many of the UK's most popular comedy panel shows such as QI and Taskmaster and she also hosts ‘The Great British Sewing Bee'. Not only is she one of the country's foremost comedians, Sara is a bestselling author too, having written three books - ‘Animal', ‘Sex Money Power' and her debut novel ‘Weirdo', which is out on paperback now. She's also a book fan and co-hosts the podcast ‘Sara and Cariad's Weirdos Book Club' with her friend, and previous guest on Changes, Cariad Lloyd. In this refreshing and light hearted conversation, Sara opens about her untraditional upbringing, her transition to vegetarianism at a young age and her changing relationship with her parents after her Dad left when she was seven. Reflecting on her latest novel, "Weirdo,", Sara also discusses her evolving relationship with her own confidence, detachment from show business as a new mum and her self-worth as a comedian.Buy 'Weirdo' here:https://www.whsmith.co.uk/products/weirdo-unlike-many-debut-novels-this-one-will-stick-with-you-for-a-long-time-guardian-main/sara-pascoe/paperback/9780571374540.htmlListen to Cariad Lloyd's Changes episode here:https://podfollow.com/changeswithanniemacmanus/episode/59c1bc1991700462b988d47248a3ce8831095b5b/viewGET IN TOUCHContact us at changespod@gmail.com with your emails and voice notes.Changes is a deaf friendly podcast, transcripts can be accessed here: https://www.anniemacmanus.com/changes Hosted on Acast. Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware

We've wanted comedian, podcaster and presenter of the 'Great British Sewing Bee' Sara Pascoe on the pod for so long, and this week she joined us for lunch and a natter! As a mum of 2 very young kids, Sara took a break from feeding and popped round for a quick catch up, and treated us to some hilarious stories. She shared her love of frozen pizzas when she was younger, working at the Millennium Dome in London, her tips on how to deal with hecklers in the crowd at a gig, currently living on caffeine, and she confesses that her husband's roast potatoes are the reason she married him! Sara's brand new book ‘Weirdo' is released on the 25th April, and her ongoing book podcast ‘Weirdo's Book Club' with friend of pod Cariad Lloyd is fab! Hosted on Acast. After years of floundering, she took her grief and turned it into a beautiful living thing – by talking about it on her award-winning podcast Griefcast and writing about it in her wonderful book You Are Not Alone, out in paperback on the 1st February. She talks to people about their experience of grief and death and in doing so, has become a friend to hundreds of thousands, creating a gentle grief guide on how to navigate this most personal and painful of experiences. We talk grief myths, why the process doesn't happen in a straight line, how to support people who have lost someone, and why all that really matters is showing up… Learn more about your ad choices. This week's episode will cause hysteria for listeners who hail from the Emerald Isle, while those from other parts of the globe will have an education like NO OTHER, as we hear all about the ultimately doomed 'romance' between Ireland's biggest star and her philandering, oboist husband.  It's not often you hear about a cheating oboist, but thanks to this week's guest, comedian, writer Tara Flynn, we get schooled in the messy, messy saga of Adele King - aka Twink and her on – off fella, David Agnew.  Grainne was obviously DELIGHTED at being able to do a deep dive into what is one of Ireland's biggest showbiz couples, while Chantal (and most of the rest of us) can only listen agape at the goings on between this pair, not least an infamous voice mail, which coined the phrase 'zip up yer Mickey' and remains part of Irish folk law forever more.  Buckle-up for this bumpy, but glorious ride!  Come and see Grainne and Chatal LIVE when they record two episodes of ‘The Way They Were' at the Museum of Comedy in London, on Wednesday 25th October 2023.
