This week on the Niche Cast we begin, as we often do, with a chat about the Blackcaps following the limited overs tour of Sri Lanka... leading into some stat crunching about the young players taking international cricket by storm. From there we delve into some of the top performers in the Plunket Shield and Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and then football takes over, with a few takeaways from the latest All Whites games and the Wellington Phoenix Women's poor start. The Breakers keep winning and they also keep doing weird things so the Freddie Gillespie/Tacko Fall situation gets a few words. Then finally a few key NRL/NRLW offseason moves for you to stay attuned to, including a sneaky trend of NZ Sevens reps flocking to rugby league.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/elnichecacheNewsletter twice a week: https://thenichecache.substack.comHook us up with a brew: https://buymeacoffee.com/thenichecacheSay kia ora: thenichecache@gmail.comwww.theniche-cache.com(00:00) Intro(03:51) Test Cricket priorities(07:53) Mindfulness(10:36) Blackcaps in Sri Lanka(35:05) Emerging Blackcaps Stat Game(52:30) Plunket Shield/Hallyburton Johnstone Shield(01:04:37) All Whites in World Cup quals(01:14:22) Wellington Phoenix women(01:30:58) Breakers winning/weirdness(01:40:13) Kiwi-NRL Corner

Three new assistant coaches have been named for the Black Ferns, all of whom are men. Tony Christie, Steve Jackson and Mike Delany will join head coach Allan Bunting in the coaching set up, while former NZ Sevens team manager Janelle Strickland will be the team's manager. The new trio replace departing assistants Wesley Clarke and Whitney Hansen. There hasn't been a great coaching pathway for women in rugby over the years, but some are starting to emerge, such as Crystal Kaua at the Chiefs, and Victoria Grant with the Hurricanes. Of course Hansen was an assistant with the Black Ferns under Wayne Smith, but she's now leading the Matatū in Super Rugby. Former Wellington player turned rugby commentator Alice Soper thinks more could be done to improve that coaching pathway for women. She spoke to Corin Dann.
