Send us a textRobbie O'Davis is a name etched into Newcastle Knights folklore. To the red-and-blue faithful, he's better known as “Robbie O'Save-Us,” the fearless fullback whose blistering speed, courage under pressure, and game-changing brilliance helped define an era. Across more than 200 appearances for Newcastle, Robbie became one of the club's most trusted match-winners, the kind of player teammates relied on and opponents feared. His impact stretched far beyond club footy. Robbie represented Queensland in State of Origin and proudly wore the green and gold for Australia, placing him among rugby league's elite. His list of achievements tells the story: two NRL Premierships, a Clive Churchill Medal, a Rugby League World Cup winner's medal, the State of Origin Shield, and the Wally Lewis Medal—previously known as the Ron McAuliffe Medal—for player of the Origin series. Few players reach those heights, and even fewer do so with Robbie's blend of flair, toughness, and heart.Recognition followed throughout his career and beyond. He was named in the Newcastle Knights' “Team of the Era” (1988–2007) and, in 2022, was inducted into the Newcastle National Rugby League Hall of Fame, cementing his place as one of the club's all-time greats. But like many athletes whose professional careers end long before the passion fades, life after football brought challenges that required just as much determination as his playing days. Retirement didn't come with a roadmap, and navigating the transition demanded every bit of the resilience that made him a standout on the field. His story is not only about sporting success—it's about identity, perseverance, and finding purpose 01:35 - Robbie's Journey into Rugby League08:20 - Robbie'O Grand Final Dance 12:00 - Athlete Mentality 16:10 – Robbie's Broken Nose and Palate Injury19:05 – Concussion Experience and Dad's Influence22:10 – Pressure of Playing for a Town Like Newcastle26:00 – Repetitive Head Impacts, Concussions and Effects Post Career32:25 – NRL Study and Independent Results39:00 – Public Perception and Risk of Sport46:00 – Thought on Family Playing Rugby50:40 – Advice Through Lived Experience with Repetitive Head Impacts58:00 – Favourite Moments/ Memories of Robbie's Career Robbie O Instagram: @robbieosaveus1 Subscribe, review and share for new episodes which will drop weekly Social media:Twitter: @first concussionFacebook: Headfirst: A concussion podcastInstagram: Headfirst_ Concussion Email: headfirstconcussion@gmail.com

Send Me a Message! What happens when the things we love most become casualties of our mental health? Today, I'm facing that question head-on as social anxiety keeps me from the final Newcastle Knights home game of the season. For me, the Knights aren't just a hobby, they're part of my identity! With my Pride of the Hunter banner and strong, powerful voice in the stands, I've become a bit of a fixture at McDonald Jones Stadium. Yet instead of joining 30,000 fans today, I'm at home recording this episode. This tug-of-war happens a lot, between wanting to go and feeling capable of going and not having the capacity. This internal conflict captures the cruel nature of social anxiety and autism-related sensory challenges. Even when we and I desperately want and need something to cheer about, sometimes the mental barriers win. And my social battery just doesn't stretch enough. But there's still meaning in sharing the struggle. Living with mental illness often means redefining expectations. It's not always about being perfect in my record of appearances at games, but in trying my best and balancing self-care with pushing my limits.Support the showYou can follow me on Instagram: @elliot.t.waters, and the show on Facebook!
Send Me a Message! Have you ever had to fight your own mind just to do something you love? In this follow-up episode to "When Social Anxiety Hits Back", I share my win of making it to the Newcastle Knights game—despite social anxiety trying it's hardest to keep me trapped at home.It came down to a last-minute call, but walking into McDonald Jones Stadium with 30,000 fans reminded me that showing up matters more than the scoreboard. Even though the Knights went down to the Brisbane Broncos, pushing past my mental health barriers felt like the real victory. And it was! Sometimes building a life worth living means leaning into discomfort and fronting up anyway, especially for the things that make us feel alive! Go Knights!Support the showYou can follow me on Instagram: @elliot.t.waters, and the show on Facebook!
These are the guys who used to play on 'the edge'. In the days when almost everything was considered 'legal', some were employed as enforcers, whilst others never ever took a backward step. Many were just simply fearless, but you'd definitely try and avoid running towards all of them. They are rugby league's hard men. Rugby league was a little bit different in the 1990s. A mainly part-time sport where the attributes of some players could have easily secured themselves alternative employment as bouncers! Such as the charging rhino himself, Barrie McDermott, who used a not so subtle trick to further intimidate his opponents. Or Kelvin Skerrett, who won six Championships and four Challenge Cups with Wigan. The Wales and Great Britain international is the man described as a "dirty get" on Mick Morgan's famous viral commentary. Castleford legend Mal Reilly was just as tough as a coach as he was as a player. When he moved to Manly he used to ask his team-mates who the toughest players on the opposition were so he could target them to gain respect. Later, he coached at Newcastle Knights, where he found out which of his players had the best records on the rowing machine before smashing them all with his own stamina and fitness. He's even got a an intense training drill named after him... the Malcolm! And then there's the likes of Adrian Morley. Known as 'The Enforcer' in Australia, 'Moz' kept his own little black book to keep tabs on opponents who were due a little retribution. He once received a seven-match ban for kneeing an opponent in the chest. However, the ban was expected to be more than double that before a character reference from long-time foe 'Big' Willie Mason described him as "one of the toughest players in the toughest competition in the world" helped his case. There's a fine line between legal and illegal violence in rugby league and often some of these fellas crossed it. Nowadays it would lead to an instant red card, but that doesn't mean hard men don't exist in the sport today. They just go about showing it slightly differently!
