Sport inspires, builds communities, promotes healthy lifestyles, and brings joy to millions around the world. But while sport is a powerful force for good, it is both a contributor to – and a victim of – climate change. In this episode, James and Daisy explore the intersection of sport and climate change. How does sport contribute to climate change? In what ways is climate change already affecting sport? How can sport drive meaningful climate action?SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: Forest Green Rovers – Officially recognised in 2017 as the world's first vegan football club and widely considered the greenest football club globally.  World Economic Forum (2024) – An overview of how climate change is affecting sports, including how the Paris 2024 Olympics balanced athlete performance with safety. OTHER ADVOCATES AND RESOURCES:Forbes (2025) – Examines how the Women's Euro 2025 is balancing growth, sustainability and climate risk. Switzerland has secured second-class travel for all ticketholders on match days and added 400 extra trains to ensure reliability.Cricket for Climate – Founded by Australian cricket captain, Pat Cummins, to use cricket as a platform to fight climate change. The Next Test – A hub for climate concerned cricket players, clubs, and fans. Sport England (2025) – Chairman Chris Boardman has called for a ‘mindset shift' on climate change and announced a new multi-million-pound fund to create the ‘world's greenest sports industry'. Arsenal (2018) – Installed a large-scale battery storage system capable of powering the Emirates Stadium for an entire match. Formula E – An all-electric, single-seater motorsport series. Healthy Waters Alliance – A joint initiative between World Rowing and WWF to protect freshwater ecosystems.  SOME FACTS: “Sportswashing” – The practice of an organization, a government, etc. supporting sport or organizing sports events as a way to improve its reputation.European Climate Pact (2024) – The 2016 Rio Olympics released 3.6 million tons of CO2, while the 2018 Russia World Cup released 2.16 million tons – equivalent to the emissions of 465,000+ cars on the road for a year. BBC (2025) – Next year's World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico is set to be "the most climate-damaging" in the tournament's history, driven by air travel and a significant increase in the number of matches. European Climate Pact (2024) – Half of the former Winter Olympic host cities could be unable to sponsor winter games by 2050, due to a lack of snow and ice.BBC (2023) – The Alps in northwest Switzerland experienced temperatures of 20.9C over Christmas and New Year.New Scientist (2024) – By 2100, one in eight ski resorts worldwide could have no snow.Green Football – 100,000 tonnes of sportswear ends up in UK landfills annually – enough for 2,500 pieces per person in a packed Wembley stadium. The Guardian (2025) – Tennis fans faced the hottest start to Wimbledon on record this year as temperatures soared to 32C.US Open (2018) – The US Tennis Association implemented an ‘extreme heat policy' to allow players periodic breaks during high temperatures.ScienceNews (2023) – Climate change has caused more than 500 home runs since 2010. World Athletics (2022) – 75% of athletes have experienced a direct negative impact from climate change on their health and performance.Rapid Transition Alliance (2020) – One in three British Open golf courses will be damaged by rising sea levels.Politico (2016) – Trump tried to build a sea wall to protect one of his golf courses from “global warming and its effects.”Olympics (2024) – The Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 achieved a 54.6% reduction in carbon emissions compared to previous editions. Thank you for listening! It's been nearly a year since we said, "Bonjour!" to the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, so what's been happening in Paris since the cauldron went out? Let's take a look at the initial legacy of these Games! We look at the money, initial economic impact, audience figures, building legacies, and elements of the Games that are still impacting Paris. If you're interested in training in the sport climbing warm-up gym, check out Le B.O.S.E.. If you want to swim like an Olympian, the newly-built (and very gorgeous) Centre Aquatique Olympique is now open for swimming and so much more. Le Prisme has opened in Bobigny to provide another workout facility that includes accessible training--and para sport research. Paris also leveraged the Games to rejuvenate some areas of the city. If you're in Paris on July 20 and want to see how that process is coming along, check out the Olympic Heritage Grand Walk, which goes from Parc de la Villette to the Bassin de la Maltournee in Saint-Denis. It's a free day-long adventure with plenty of surprises planned. Register here. Cleaning up the Seine was another major project, and on July 26, the first anniversary of the Olympics, the city will host a big water festival along the Seine, including a free open-air karaoke session on the Place du Chatelet. Plus, we revisit moments that really stick out to us as the legacy of Paris 2024 starts to take shape in our memories. What moments from Paris 2024 stick out in your heads a year later? How do you think the legacy of these Games is shaping up? Will they be among the greatest Games of all time? Will they be an economic boon to the city and country? Let us know! Don't forget! Our 400th episode party is coming up on Monday, July 14 from 8 to 10pm Eastern. Hope to see you there! For a transcript of this episode, please visit http://flamealivepod.com. I think for us coming off a crazy Paris, having an idea of the direction we're going and the team that's going to help us get to that place is really exciting, so we're really looking forward to the next four years.”My guests for today's episode are two of the most electric and inspiring figures in track and field: Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall. They're not just standout athletes; they're also a powerhouse couple rewriting the playbook on how to achieve success in the sport and market themselves.Fresh off of double gold medal performances in Paris, Tara and Hunter have just signed with Nike. In this episode, we chat with them about why they chose to go with the swoosh, but also, more importantly for Hunter, why it signals the brand's deeper commitment to Paralympic athletes.Tara, a two-time Olympian and the reigning Olympic and world indoor champion in the long jump, is just as magnetic off the runway as she is on it. Hunter, a three-time Paralympian and five-time medalist, just captured his first gold in the 400m T62 in Paris and has been pushing the limits of what's possible in adaptive sport since day one.In this episode, we chat about what they're building beyond the medals and what's next for two of the sport's most compelling athletes to follow up an astounding 2024.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuests: Tara Davis-Woodhall | _tarraa_ on Instagram + Hunter Woodhall on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop is a prebiotic soda that tastes like a throwback to your favorite childhood drinks, but it's loaded with benefits that your body will thank you for.

Sometimes all of the training and preparation in the world doesn't get you to the Paralympic podium. Boccia player Alison Levine experienced that firsthand during the Paris 2024 Paralympics, when tournament bracket design forced her to face the other top player early on in the elimination rounds. Play didn't go her way, and she didn't get the results she wanted. It didn't get better in the mixed doubles tournament, when she and teammate Iulian Ciobanu lost to Thailand in the bronze medal match. Even with the disappointment, Alison's Paris experience was, on the whole, a good one. Along with talking about the tournament and how she regrouped after the Paralympics, Alison tells us about life in the Athletes' Village, how accessible design made life a lot easier for a couple of weeks, and the infamous Paris 2024 chocolate muffin.
