Just Jimmy and Tyler kicking off June with something that’s been on Jimmy’s mind since the Rubicon trip — and since the Barrett Lake outhouse project started spreading to other forests. The short version: the National Forest Service is being restructured in a way that removes local regional offices. The closest regional office for El Dorado National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and Stanislaus National Forest is now in Salt Lake City. That means people who have never set foot on our trails are making decisions about them. Jimmy draws the parallel to what happened at Gemini Bridges and Labyrinth Rims — 2,200 miles of trails evaluated and closed by people working off a map. No boots on the ground. And those were local BLM offices. Now imagine Salt Lake City. The call to action is clear: the off-road community needs to show up at the table before the restructuring finishes and the table gets moved somewhere else. Jimmy runs through what that looks like in practice. The Mad Hatters just completed their adopted section of the Rubicon Trail. Friends of Fordyce and Friends of Rubicon had a big work weekend. Spree to Four (or the Granite Bandits — Jimmy goes back and forth) does Corral Hollow every year and opens more roads than the county can staff. There’s a work party at Moon Rocks coming up to install 32 named obstacle signs, with BLM permission. And the Barrett Lake blob bathroom project — the one the off-road community funded and built — is now being copied onto Fordyce at Committee Crossing and Wind Chill 3, and at Observation Point on the Rubicon. Tahoe National Forest, which historically does not collaborate with El Dorado National Forest, asked to copy the project. That’s what showing up looks like. How to get involved: contact your local ranger district, come with questions not demands, keep digging until you find the person who can actually answer them. Search Facebook groups for your specific riding area. If nothing exists, start the conversation. For funding, Onyx has their Trail Revival Program live right now — $5,000 grants, Jimmy applied and got one last year, the main ask is media showing the work was done. Tread Lightly and BFG also have trail grant programs. The window for making a real impact is right now, during the restructure, not after it’s done. Also in this episode: today (June 1) is the last day to use the Devos LightRanger 500 group buy discount code. The Russo May giveaway has closed — winner announcement coming Thursday. The June giveaway is not announced yet but Jimmy teases it’s a company they’ve worked with before and it’s a good one. Apple Podcast reviews are approaching 800 (Onyx Elite giveaway waiting at that mark), and Jimmy drops another hint on the big SnailArmor Black Friday launch — “we’ve already changed how inflation and deflation is done globally, and we’re about to do it again.” We have a massive discount this month with Rusoh Fire Extinguishers. Welcome to episode 32 of Inside The Line the Catskills! On this episode, John and I go over my recent adventure in southern Utah. This was such a fascinating, beautiful place that I cannot explain, but I will definitely try on this episode. I go over what my wife and I did everyday and try to explain what the areas looked like, but it's tough to describe some of these places because of how stunning they were. We also do a quick talk about bushwhacking tips, the new Catskills Trail Crew (a group of volunteers that make improvements on the trails in the Catskills) and of course mountain lions! Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states. We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode forty-four is Utah. The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America. Here's our list for Utah: 1. Hit up Capitol Reef National Park for some secluded hiking and make sure to stop for a famous cinnamon rolls or pie from the Gifford Homestead. There’s options for both day hiking, or backcountry hiking. Capitol Reef offers many hiking options for serious backpackers and those who enjoy exploring remote areas. Marked hiking routes lead into narrow, twisting gorges, slot canyons, and to spectacular viewpoints high atop the Waterpocket Fold. Popular backcountry hikes in the southern section of the park include Upper and Lower Muley Twist Canyons and Halls Creek. 2. Take a 4x4 trip through 50 miles of challenging backcountry roads lead to campsites, trailheads, and many natural and cultural features in Canyonlands National Park. Alternatively, there are tons of roads around Moab that you can go driving on through BLM lands. Some of the top trails include Hell’s Revenge, Shafer Trail, Klondike Bluffs, Chicken Corners and More. Bears Ears National Monument...or whatever it is becoming now. 3. Choose one of the 3 at Zion...they have 3 of my top 10 day hikes in the country. Observation Point, Angels Landing, The Narrows. 4. Goblin Valley State Park. 5. Dinosaur National Monument. Thanks for listening to Season 3 of our podcast featuring all 50 US States and some of each state's unique and hopefully lesser known to you Outdoor Adventures. This episode featured the state of Utah. Subscribe to our podcast if you enjoy what you hear and if you feel so inclined to leave a review we would be grateful. Gary and Gary are livin' the dream and discuss their trip to NorCal to run the Rubicon and Fordyce Creek trails. They bring Shawn and Roberto for a three day and two night camping trip on the Rubicon. This trip, they run the original Rubicon Trail entering through Wentworth Springs Road. Most people enter the Rubicon from Loon Lake which bypasses the Devil's Postpile - a difficult boulder field. After the postpile, they continue on and do the optional Soup Bowl obstacle. Next, they do Little Sluice and finish the Indian Trail as it gets dark. They pull into Buck Island Lake campground after dark and set up camp. In the morning, they backtrack to run the Old Sluice uphill - extremely challenging! Then after breaking down camp, they proceed through Big Sluice and a bunch of boulder crawling. They arrive at Rubicon Springs early enough to play in the pools and waterfalls of the Rubicon River, then camp at the Dirty Dozen campground. Cadillac Hill and Observation Point marks the end of day three. After a day off, Gary and Gary next run Fordyce Creek Trail. This is their second time running Fordyce so they invite the High Sierra 4x4 guys, Jeff and Forest to join along and show them the trail. They find all the hardest lines in the 6 winch hills and do some crazy climbs at the Committee playground. A great day with some good buds gave this trip a perfect finale.
