As another massive storm disrupts the Eastern United States, there can be no doubt that winter is upon us with all its power. A gray-white tempest of snow, sleet, ice and freezing rain, punctuated by periods of intense cold — winter slows us down and challenges us to maintain our lives in its wake. Music of the northern countries provides a respite, with melodies and harmonies that wrap us in a feeling of warmth and space. On this transmission of Hearts of Space we focus on the piano and strings, on a program called WINTER HARMONIES 2. Featured artists include LUDOVICO EINAUDI, KATHRYN KAYE, KEVIN KELLER, DAVID LANZ, BLOW UP HOLLYWOOD, CHAD LAWSON, DARSHAN AMBIENT, and KETIL BJORNSTAD & SVANTE HENRYSON. Consider, dear listeners, the unresolved interval between Christmas and the New Year. Some of us work, some don't. Some socialize with friends and family, some enjoy a good book. A fortunate minority take vacations in warm places; the rest of us return unwanted gifts, make resolutions for the new year, clean out closets, take in a movie, and keep busy to disguise the lack of normal purpose. In general, it's an ill-defined and unsettled week in our national calendar until New Year's eve parties and a massive day of football bring some all-American clarity back to the picture. In the week to come, we start the new year and whatever the 'new normal' is. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE we wish you a stellar new year, and bring you a soundtrack for this phantom period on a program called INTERLUDE. Music is by JEFF OSTER, MARK ISHAM, KATHRYN KAYE, TIM STORY, LUDOVICO EINAUDI, BOB HOLROYD, DARSHAN AMBIENT, and introducing cellist JONATHAN HUGH. Consider the guitar, spacefans. it's arguably our most ubiquitous instrument. These days, it comes in many varieties: acoustic and electric, folk and classical, nylon and steel string, slide and electronic—to name a few. And when it comes to creating ambient music, the kind of guitar matters quite a bit. Acoustic guitar tends toward classic tunings and slow tempos, with conservative use of effects; electric guitar is almost the opposite, with aggressive use of effects, feedback, and modifiers. And though the results vary widely, it's still recognizable as a guitar. But with the electronic guitar, you might never know the sound came from a guitar at all—the instrument has been redefined, dematerialized, and effectively disappeared. The guitar becomes a playable "user interface"—a familiar way to control synthesizers and other electronics. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the evolving world of the ambient guitar, on a program called TRANSLUCENT GUITARS. Music is by TOM CAUFIELD, COLIN EDWIN & JON DURANT, CRAIG PADILLA & MARVIN ALLEN, JOHN GREGORIUS, DARSHAN AMBIENT, ROBIN GUTHRIE, HAMMOCK, CARL WEINGARTEN, JUHA-MATTI RAUTIAINEN, JEFF PEARCE, and DELAY TACTICS. Awakening in the Cave of Dreams to the sounds of Matthew Stewart, Desenstized, Darshan Ambient and Jeff Greinke.
Of all the artists that have been featured on Hearts of Space, due to his wide influence, theoretical brilliance, and tireless innovation — no one has earned a celebratory retrospective more than JON HASSELL. An avant-garde composer and inventor of "Fourth World" music, he described it as "a unified primitive/futuristic sound combining features of world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques." Jon Hassell died this week at the age of 84. We'll work on that retrospective, but for now we'll use one of his classics to introduce a program of the kind of globe-trotting, culture-hopping, creative ambient he inspired. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a program called PARALLEL WORLDS. Music is by JON HASSELL, TRANCE MISSION, GREEN ISAC ORCHESTRA, RICHARD BONE, DARSHAN AMBIENT, DANIEL LANOIS & ROCCO DELUCA, ALEX HAAS, and FORREST FANG. FOR DECADES, globalization has been a fact of life. And even before Covid-19, it was becoming controversial. Now, with critical supply chains being disrupted by the pandemic, we're having a bit of a rethink. Whatever happens with global trade, one thing is certain: the global exchange of music, film, art and media is a cultural fact of life that will remain as vibrant and creative as ever. San Francisco is the home of Six Degrees Records, a company that's been dedicated to crossing musical borders since 1996, with the provocative slogan "everything is closer than you think." They live the idea, releasing a wide range of traditional and progressive music from around the planet. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an Anglo-American ambient journey, on a program called SIX DEGREES OF AMBIENT. Music is by ANOTHER FINE DAY, TOM MIDDLETON, BOB HOLROYD, TOM GREEN, HALFTRIBE, ANDREW HEATH, DARSHAN AMBIENT, JEFF PEARCE, RICHARD NORRIS, and MARK ISHAM. G’day listeners, we are here to take you on another journey into oceans of atmospheric textures, expressive rhythmical dynamics and the unexplained dark tones, cast by our selection of talented musicians who take you on their journey into the sounds of this New Year. As always, featuring the female side of this genre, Danish synthesist Sofie Birch cosmic caresses & jazz dusting of reality departures, an exploration into the energies by An On Bast, second single from Stephanie Sante from her forth-coming album Dark Matter Evolution, hypnotic & mesmerizing organic ambiance by Panic Girl, & Jennifer Grais spirit-driven voice, teaming up with Byron Metcalf’s rich layering of indigenous instruments, percussive textures & ethereal voices, Exploring sonic improvisations using a range of portable modular synthesizers as well as a selection of analog keyboards, Nigel Mullaney on the Din label, the music of tomorrow created in a retro manner from Cyberwalker & Walter Christian Rothe chords and melodies straight from the heart, are just some of the talented musicians appearing in this issue. On a sad note, we lost Michael Allison of Darshan Ambient after a brave fight with cancer, as a fitting tribute, we give you music from his latest album A Day Like Any Other, released just before his passing. Blast from the past features the track Dune, from Jade Warrior’s 1984 album Horizon, core members of the band were Jon Field still performing & Tony Duhig who passed away in 1990. August 29th 2013 - show 8.14 is an intense mix of ambient and electronica from this planet and beyond. Sometimes our blue planet is getting too small and too scary. As a reaction, this show is a ticket to a place where you can feel safe and relaxed. Enjoy! Let’s start slowly... with Shane Morris and Mystified; the track is called ‘a struggling new form of life’. Not only do we like this title so much, it sets the theme for this mix like no other track could do. Superb! Arriving september 10th but already on our show.... the brand new album by Darshan Ambient! First you hear ‘Fields’, later in this mix the title track of the album called ‘Little Things’. The album? Not little at all ;-) Back from the silence.... it’s Planet Boelex! As soon as you hear the sounds you will recognize the typical Boelex approach; two tracks back to back, a collaboration between Boelex/Mosaik and a track by Boelex himself. Also check the 8.14 LOG file for more info about this brand new EP release. It really seems like yesterday we played the first track by PB on our show.... remember Swamp Gas back in 2005?.... Syngate releases presents: KIKAI. Ready for music inspired by machines and sounds from the early days of synthesizer music? It’s beautiful and gives us a chance to grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the view.... See that crazy blue planet through the window? That’s where we started this journey... Music from Berlin then; incredible melodies and sounds by two amazing guys: Modeselektor and Apparat. Just listen. Don’t think. Don’t ask why. Say hello to Schiller! From the ultrasuperdeluxe edition of ‘Sonne’ we took the third album ‘Sonnenwelten’ for a magical bridge between the two Moderat pieces in this mix. Sonnenwelten is 100% instrumental and space proof. Damage Done by Moderat ... till the tears roll down your face. So, let’s start this show now. (Kidding!) The band with a name I can’t write down without triple checking; Oneohtrix Point Never. File this under: psychedelic ambient or cinematica if you will. Original thinking and beautifully done. Must hearthis one multiple times! Around the corner we sense Dust in the air; Solar Fields at his best. We’re now past a certain point in this mix where you probably feel what this episode tries to express.... The ‘Little Things’ track by Darshan Ambient starts playing; slowly moving, grooving, subtle sounds and spectres, flowing into the music by Janneh from Finland. Your body is floating now.... don’t fight it, just let it all happen! Experimental / Dark Ambient comes from the 2007 release by Joe Frawley, a piece that popped-up here fon the computer all of sudden ... The Tangerine album; it’s like good wine: tracks getting better every year, we still love the album! And it goes so very well with our next transition... That’s the final ambient piece for this mix: a T.S.R. production... when Carbon Based Lifeforms meets Solar Fields. Literally. Hello...? Anyone...? Aha..... everybody’s asleep now. Perfect! When you wake up, there’s a beautiful world waiting for you. At least, we hope so. Love and Light! TRACKLIST: [00:00] Welcome to Spacemusic 8.14 Chemical Reactions! February 10th 2013 - ‘Under the Stars’ takes you out for a magnificent in-space cinematic experience... music that came to us via e-mail, via postal, fresh new releases, items never to be forgotten anymore. First of all David Leckenby plays this dreamy and groovy track called ‘Home’; this one really kicks off the starry night you can expect this episode. The Kahvi label dropped a song in the box that we can’t stop playing here in Rotterdam... ‘When the Sun meets the Moon’ by 4T Thieves is not only a fantastic space track, it’s a song that should be on your iPod forever! Feel the groove, hear the unique chords, enjoy the magical sounds that Nik included in this track and follow the link in the shownotes to download it for free. The new Syngate release ‘Sparkling’ is a fact! TM Solver delivers a very modern piece of work, typical sequencial moods combined with super smooth synth leads... high production level, a personal and unique style of music that makes your day. Very cool! What can we say about the next move... from Paris to Tokyo, this is probably the best electronic/downtempo record made in 2012. Meet the guys from Connect.Ohm and their release ‘9980’. Indeed they come from France and Japan. They succeeded to create an album via the web. ‘9980’ makes you silent, this one goes deep, is it a dream or is it reality? It is an Ultimae./com release for sure: should be heard on the biggest PA/HiFi speaker set you can imagine. Let it all happen from there... Winter time in Rotterdam, good reason for some coolin’ down now with Darshan Ambient, his record ‘Falling Light’ is a true blessing; peaceful tunes during today’s show under the stars... Time for the next chapter as Michael Brückner demonstrates the art of composing with the album ‘100 Million Miles Under The Stars’. Escape from the world... yes, take a few moments to absorb everything shown to you. Michael has it all under control, his synths, his thoughts, your thoughts, your moods, let this track surprise you! The Ouddorp takes continue.... we just love the album! Erren, Fleissig, Schottler and Steffen back on Spacemusic again. Especially the fact that this record was recorded in one take: Amazing! Impressive! Good food! Thanks to a tweet last week by Robert from Brisbane in Australia, we conclude this starry night with a special piece you might already know. We introduced our fleet to this song 7 years ago. Robert found this one really his favorite as the closing track of show #54 back in Spacemusic Season 1. Do you have any idea which track we play?... First of all David Leckenby plays this dreamy and groovy track called ‘Home’; this one really kicks off the starry night you can expect this episode. The Kahvi label dropped a song in the box that we can’t stop playing here in Rotterdam... ‘When the Sun meets the Moon’ by 4T Thieves is not only a fantastic space track, it’s a song that should be on your iPod forever! Feel the groove, hear the unique chords, enjoy the magical sounds that Nik included in this track and follow the link in the shownotes to download it for free. The new Syngate release ‘Sparkling’ is a fact! TM Solver delivers a very modern piece of work, typical sequencial moods combined with super smooth synth leads... high production level, a personal and unique style of music that makes your day. Very cool! What can we say about the next move... from Paris to Tokyo, this is probably the best electronic/downtempo record made in 2012. Meet the guys from Connect.Ohm and their release ‘9980’. Indeed they come from France and Japan. They succeeded to create an album via the web. ‘9980’ makes you silent, this one goes deep, is it a dream or is it reality? It is an Ultimae./com release for sure: should be heard on the biggest PA/HiFi speaker set you can imagine. Let it all happen from there... Winter time in Rotterdam, good reason for some coolin’ down now with Darshan Ambient, his record ‘Falling Light’ is a true blessing; peaceful tunes during today’s show under the stars... Time for the next chapter as Michael Brückner demonstrates the art of composing with the album ‘100 Million Miles Under The Stars’. Escape from the world... yes, take a few moments to absorb everything shown to you. Michael has it all under control, his synths, his thoughts, your thoughts, your moods, let this track surprise you! The Ouddorp takes continue.... we just love the album! Erren, Fleissig, Schottler and Steffen back on Spacemusic again. Especially the fact that this record was recorded in one take: Amazing! Impressive! Good food! Thanks to a tweet last week by Robert from Brisbane in Australia, we conclude this starry night with a special piece you might already know. We introduced our fleet to this song 7 years ago. Robert found this one really his favorite as the closing track of show #54 back in Spacemusic Season 1. Do you have any idea which track we play?... Send us your answer via e-mail and win a free cd! Hia! How RU doing? June 10th 2009: LIVE from the Russell Square park it's time for an overview of the London Walkabout we did today. Tube strike so the best option was to go walking. Man! I need a new pair of shoes....! Because of this tube strike there's an enormous amount of traffic in the streets of London. Taking the bus was therefore not any good as walking was much faster. Now that I'm relaxing @ Russell Square I really appreciate the green areas in a big city like London.... There are a lot of green parks, some of them really big like Hide Park and the Kensington Gardens, some of them smaller like Russell Square and Gray's Inn Garden. They all have one thing in common: get away from the daily stress for a few minutes, having your lunch, feeding your baby, lying down and take a nap, anything you'd like basically. After that you just carry on with what you were doing before feeling a bit refreshed now. Ah.... and one tip if you're allergic to heavy traffic sounds: please do wear around-the-ear fit headphones with some great tunes!!! Once you wear these you'll be amazed how many people are wearing them too, it's cool as! ~TC [caption id="attachment_835" align="aligncenter" width="576" caption="Russell Square Garden Chillout"][/caption] nbsp; Music in this episode is performed by Nova Nova and Darshan Ambient. nbsp;
