As the host of Oh My Dollar!, a weekly financial advice radio show and podcast, Lillian has built a reputation for talking money without being boring or stiff- covering the kinds of modern money issues that face millennials, such as retirement planning in the gig economy, choosing a budgeting app, parental leave in a feminist household, and how to pay back six figures of student loan debt. In her twenties she had 40 jobs, including dishwasher, stripper economist, social worker, tax preparer, organic farmer, bagel deliverer, zine librarian, database wizard, and bicycle valet. She has lived in a geodesic dome made of recycled political yard signs and ridden trains in 31 countries. She is pretty good at saving money. Her book, Get Your Money Together, is an illustrated workbook filled with cats explaining purrsonal finance- everything from budgeting to investing. And was 200% funded on Kickstarter. In this episode we talk about why she chose to use cats for explaining personal finance, how she has made giving and helping other's a foundation in her life, why private schools are sometimes more affordable than public schools, avoiding lifestyle inflation, how she has been able to save 50% of her income, why we all have budget constraints but don't always operate that way, advise for people leasing cars, and even saving money on groceries (especially if you are vegetarian). Pharma and insurance companies play devious, clever games, competing for dollars. They're sharks! It'd be fun to track, but they're eating us alive. If anyone could beat the sharks at this game, we'd pick Lillian Karabaic, who runs the personal finance show/community called Oh My Dollar! — and is SUPER on-top-of her stuff. But Lillian recently got socked with an unexpected $3,000 charge— and expects to lose her very-organized fight against it.Understanding how Lillian got here — how pretty much any of us could, and how we can start to fight back, together — means understanding the games these big sharks are playing.Which is exactly what we do in our latest episode, with Lillian's expert — and often very-funny — guidance. This episode goes deep on a shark game called a “copay accumulator” policy. In short, they're an invention by the insurance industry to make sure only YOUR money counts toward your yearly deductible — not any assistance you may receive from a drug company. One thing we learned: Finding out if your insurance plan even includes one of these policies can be extremely tough: Otherwise, Lillian — who did her extremely-good best to check for this very information — wouldn't have gotten taken by surprise. We've got a little bit of help to offer: Researchers from a nonprofit called The AIDS Institute also researched this question, looking at hundreds of plans across the country. And they developed a tip sheet a tip sheet to help guide their search: How to search online, what questions to ask if the information just isn't online (which happens). More resources:For tips on how to avoid overpaying for drugs — when that's possible — check out the latest edition of our First Aid Kit newsletter. There's a third bunch of sharks involved in this drug-pricing game: Middleman companies called Pharmacy Benefit Managers. If you want to understand the role they play, here's an Arm and a Leg episode about them.A dozen states have banned copay accumulators, and more are considering it. This short report includes a list of those dozen states. Here's a transcript of the episode. The number of people filing for unemployment benefits continues to rise with COVID's persistence. Many more are unsure if they should file and what exactly they should apply for under the CARES Act. Harlan Landes sits with Sandy Smith and Lillian Karabaic to discuss all your burning unemployment questions. They unravel some of the confusion about what to apply for, who is eligible, and the additional benefits due to COVID-19. - Who qualifies for unemployment assistance under the CARES Act - How the implementation of unemployment benefits offered by the CARES act differ by state - The availability of help for undocumented workers - A plea to apply for Social Services and overcome the mental hurdles to receiving aid About Sandy Smith: Sandy has been a personal finance blogger since January 1, 2009, when she resolved to get out of debt or die trying. No, no, that was 50 Cent. At age 29 she was frankly tired of paying living paycheck-to-paycheck and feeling as if she would never get ahead financially. Her blog, Yes I Am Cheap, was born out of sheer frustration with the hope of paying down a $120,000 debt much faster than the average debtor without filing for bankruptcy. Sandy is also a Senior Certified HR Professional and the founder of the Elevate Influencer conference, an event designed to reach financial influencers whose audience is primarily comprised of individuals of color. You "should" do this [unpleasant money thing.] Sound familiar? I know many of you admit to financial procrastination, but often perfectionism is a the root of procrastination. Sometimes it's things like overgeneralizing, all-or-nothing thinking, mental filter (harder on yourself than others), should statements. We're Crowdfunding a Book and Need Your Help You can find out about our campaign for the reprint of my cat-filled purrsonal finance book "A Cat's Guide to Money" at - ohmydollar.com/cats And if it doesn’t make sense for you, that is 100% fine. But if you're able to share it on social media, that goes a LONG way towards helping us out. Shares mean a lot in these campaigns! We have 10 days left to hit our stretch goal of $10,000, and we're less than $400 away! Notes Remember that money is a process, not just a thing you win once and put on your shelf. You can do things incrementally with money. It’s okay to not be perfect. It’s okay to have an off budget week or month or even year. It’s okay to backslide on your debt payoff or savings goals because you had a breakup, got sick, or just stopped focusing on it for a little bit. It’s more important to sit, reassess, and come up with a new plan. Inspired by this episode about Perfectionism on the Hannahlyze This podcast. Ask us a question! We love hearing from you!
