It's time to head back to the synth-soaked sounds of the 1980s as Dangerous Dave celebrates one of Britain's greatest and most enduring pop duos...PET SHOP BOYS!This week on The Insanely Dangerous Retropodshow, Dave takes a huge deep dive into the career of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, exploring how a chance meeting in a London electronics shop eventually led to one of the most successful partnerships in British pop history. From "West End Girls" to "It's a Sin," "Always on My Mind," "Heart," "Being Boring" and "Go West," we're celebrating the songs, albums and unmistakable electronic sound that made Pet Shop Boys legends.WHAT HAPPENED WAY BACK WHEN? – 1986First, we're travelling back to 1986, the year Pet Shop Boys released their debut album Please.Dave revisits five songs, five movies and five television shows from an incredible year of entertainment, including Top Gun, Aliens, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Real Ghostbusters and some of the biggest records of the year. Then Retro Headlines turns back the clock to remember some of the major stories making news in Britain and America.DANGEROUS DEEP DIVE – THE HISTORY OF PET SHOP BOYSHow did Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe become Pet Shop Boys?Dave goes right back to the beginning, exploring Neil's career in publishing and at Smash Hits, Chris's background and their chance meeting in London in 1981.We follow their early demos, their work with Bobby Orlando and the original version of "West End Girls", before the re-recorded song transformed them into international stars.Dave also looks at the brilliantly understated Pet Shop Boys image: Neil delivering intelligent and observational lyrics while Chris stands almost motionless behind the keyboards. No rock-star posing required.THE ALBUMSThen it's time to raid the Pet Shop Boys record collection.Dave discusses and rates the albums that defined their first two decades, including:Please – ⭐⭐⭐⭐½The debut that established the classic Pet Shop Boys sound.Actually – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Dave's number-one Pet Shop Boys album, featuring an incredible collection of songs including "It's a Sin," "Rent" and "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"Introspective – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Six enormous tracks blending electronic pop with extended club arrangements.Behaviour – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐A more reflective and emotional record featuring the magnificent "Being Boring."Very – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Colourful, confident and packed with some of the duo's greatest 90s material.Plus, Dave revisits Bilingual and Nightlife as Pet Shop Boys continued evolving through the later 1990s.THE GREATEST HITS – RATED!Then comes the big one.Dave works through some of the greatest songs in the Pet Shop Boys catalogue and gives them the Danger Rating treatment. We revisit:West End Girls ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Opportunities ⭐⭐⭐⭐½Love Comes Quickly ⭐⭐⭐⭐½Suburbia ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐It's a Sin ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐What Have I Done to Deserve This? ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Rent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Always on My Mind ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Heart ⭐⭐⭐⭐½Domino Dancing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Left to My Own Devices ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐So Hard ⭐⭐⭐⭐½Being Boring ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Can You Forgive Her? ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Go West ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐And plenty more. But only one can be Dangerous Dave's favourite...And "Being Boring" takes the number-one position, narrowly beating "West End Girls" and "It's a Sin."DANGEROUS DETOUR – THE SYNTH-POP REVOLUTIONDave takes a detour into the electronic revolution that transformed the 1980s.From synthesizers and drum machines to sequencers and changing recording technology, we explore how electronic music went from experimental to mainstream and produced artists including The Human League, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Eurythmics, Erasure and Pet Shop Boys.BACK IN THE ADSWe also rewind British television for another edition of Back in the Ads, remembering the telephone advertising campaigns that sold us something surprisingly simple...The joy of actually talking to somebody!A reminder of a world before WhatsApp, social media and endless notifications.RETRO RUMBLE – PET SHOP BOYS VS ERASURETwo synth-pop giants enter the ring.Only one leaves victorious.Pet Shop Boys vs Erasure!Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe take on Andy Bell and Vince Clarke across greatest hits, vocals, lyrics, albums and dancefloor anthems.Erasure put up one hell of a fight...But Pet Shop Boys eventually take the Retro Rumble crown 3–2.DANGEROUSLY UNDERRATEDDave also shines a spotlight on "King's Cross", the brilliant Actually album track that proves some of the finest Pet Shop Boys songs never needed to become massive singles.GAZ'S RETRO RECORDS – SYNTH-POP SPECIALThen Gaz opens his record collection for a special edition of Gaz's Retro Records. This week he's celebrating four acts that helped make electronic music such an important part of the 1980s.OMDGaz celebrates the brilliant Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, from the atmospheric "Enola Gay" and "Souvenir" to "Maid of Orleans" and their later pop success. For Gaz, OMD proved that electronic music could be experimental, emotional and incredibly catchy at the same time.SOFT CELLNext comes Soft Cell.Marc Almond and Dave Ball created a much darker version of synth-pop, mixing electronic music with the atmosphere of nightclubs and the seedier side of city life. And, of course, there's the enormous "Tainted Love" – one of the defining electronic records of the entire decade.NEW ORDERGaz then turns to New Order, the band that emerged from the end of Joy Division and helped blur the lines between alternative rock and electronic dance music. From "Blue Monday" and "Bizarre Love Triangle" to "True Faith," their influence can still be heard across electronic and dance music today.ERASUREFinally, Gaz celebrates Erasure.Vince Clarke's electronic brilliance combined with Andy Bell's incredible voice produced classics including "Sometimes," "A Little Respect," "Stop!," "Blue Savannah" and "Love to Hate You."They might have lost today's Retro Rumble...But Gaz argues that no discussion about great British synth-pop would be complete without them.Four artists.Four very different approaches to electronic pop.And four essential additions to your retro record collection.THE DANGER ZONEFinally, Dave asks the biggest question of the episode...Are Pet Shop Boys the greatest British pop duo of all time? When you consider the songs...The albums...The lyrics...The production...The innovation...And more than four decades of longevity...Dave's answer is...YES!Pet Shop Boys receive a massive 58 out of 60 Danger Rating.HALL OF DANGERAnd there could only be one way to finish.Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe officially enter the...

What happens when electronic music chooses restraint over excess, when it speaks softly, but still leaves a mark?Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, often shortened to OMD, formed in Merseyside in 1978 by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. Their sound sits in that space between pop clarity and experimental intent. Synthesizers, drum machines, fragments of melody, but arranged with a kind of careful distance.OMD's influence sits quietly but widely across electronic and pop music. Not through spectacle, but through reduction showing how little is needed for something to endure.Described as one of the most influential synth-pop acts in history, OMD have inspired many artists across diverse genres and disciplines. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.https://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. PRETTY IN PINK – 40 YEARS LATER In this episode of Turn The Beat Around we celebrate one of the most beloved teen films — and one of the most influential alt‑pop soundtracks — of the 1980s: Pretty in Pink (1986). John Hughes' suburban‑romance classic starred Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, Jon Cryer and James Spader, but it was the music that turned the film into a generational touchstone. We explored how the soundtrack became an even bigger success than the movie itself, climbing to No. 6 on the ARIA Albums Chart in 1986 and introducing Australian audiences to a wave of British new‑wave and post‑punk acts. From the Psychedelic Furs' title track to OMD's era‑defining “If You Leave,” this episode revisits the songs that shaped the emotional architecture of the film and helped define teen culture in the mid‑80s. A soundtrack that inspired a generation, and still stands as one of the decade's most enduring alt‑pop compilations.

Alireza Ashrafian – NTNU må vise moralsk ryggrad

Episode 200: Pet Shop Boys – Please (1986) (Featuring Andrew Dineley of "Art on Your Sleeve") – Part 1 and Colours of Ever announcement The 200th "regular" episode of Permanent Record Podcast is here! ("Regular" excludes special episodes and the PRP 007 Mini-Broadcasts, which don't follow the same numbering scheme.)   Brian and Sarah wanted to do something big and special for episode 200, so they chose to cover an album which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary: Please, the debut album from the Pet Shop Boys. And to make the episode even bigger and more special, they invited the charming and talented Andrew Dineley to join in on the conversation. Andrew, as you probably already know, is host of the excellent "Art on Your Sleeve" podcast, as well as proprietor of the fabulous Soft Octopus Design Studio and contributor to Classic Pop magazine. This first episode in the Please series sets the stage for what's to come. Brian and Sarah look back to the pre-Pet Shop Boys days of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe and recount the story Neil and Chris's first meeting. Our hosts then follow the journey of the Boys' musical collaboration, which takes us from Chelsea, to Camden Town, to New York City, and back to London, and introduces us to characters such as Ray Roberts, Bobby Orlando, Tom Watkins, and Stephen Hague.  Andrew Dineley joins the conversation to provide insight on the design aspects of Please such as the original album cover concept, the final cover design done by Mark Farrow, as well as a few of the single covers. He also shares stories about and from Pet Shop Boys' first manager, Tom Watkins, and Andrew recalls his first exposure to Pet Shop Boys music-- on a children's show with eerily-animated pound notes! And, we even get to hear about a chance encounter recently Andrew Dineley had with OMD's Andy McCluskey! As is usual with PRP album discussions, the release history, chart positions, and reviews of Please are covered in this episode, as well as Brian and Sarah's personal history with the album, which Brian feels slightly embarrassed to share.  And because it's the big 200th episode, several listeners sent in voicemails to mark the occasion, and our hosts happily share those messages as well.  Finally, as if that's not enough, Brian has exciting musical news of his own to share, about yet another synthpop duo. This duo, called Colours of Ever, consists of Brian and his longtime friend Jason, and they've released their first single on Bandcamp! Check them out at https://coloursofever.bandcamp.com/ . There's so much good stuff in this episode, so don't delay-- Please download and listen to it today!  In this episode of the OMD TV & Podcast Show, Huyen explores why patients often choose a competitor over your practice—even when your services are comparable. You'll discover practical ways to stop blending into the crowd and start becoming the obvious choice by defining your unique value and enhancing the patient experience. What You'll Learn The Danger of Commoditisation: How identical websites and messaging make practices indistinguishable—and why patients default to price or convenience when they can't see a difference. The Power of Patient Feedback: Why surveying current, past and even lost patients uncovers the real reasons people choose (or don't choose) you. Riches in the Niches: How defining a specific target market allows you to tailor amenities, scheduling and communication to meet their exact needs. Positioning the Physician: A simple one‑page graphic that highlights your credentials, experience and expertise to build instant trust with prospective patients. Differentiating Through Experience: Specific examples of unique amenities, loyalty programs, personal touches and cutting‑edge technology that set you apart from your competitors. Learning from the Best: The value of modelling successful clinics' strategies instead of reinventing the wheel. Action Steps: How to bring all these elements together and why ongoing differentiation keeps patients loyal and referring their friends. Key Takeaways If you don't define what makes your practice special, patients will assume you're just like everyone else. Small touches—like friendly staff, shorter wait times or flexible financing—can be major differentiators. Specialising in a niche and clearly displaying your credentials instils confidence and reduces price shopping. Consistent efforts to refine your service and communicate your strengths are what keep patients coming back. Resources & Next Steps Ready to define your practice's unique value? The bicarbonate buffer system plays a critical role in the body's ability to maintain pH, manage inflammation, and support cellular healing—and in this episode, Dr. Greg Jones sits down with Dr. Mark Sircus to explore how restoring this natural bicarbonate buffering system may help slow aging and support the body's capacity to heal chronic disease. Drawing from decades of clinical experience, Dr. Sircus explains how Natural Allopathic Medicine integrates bicarbonate therapy with essential nutrients like magnesium and iodine to strengthen resilience and improve physiological function.A pioneer in natural medicine, Dr. Sircus outlines why bicarbonate is far more than a household compound. He shares its potential applications in kidney health, metabolic regulation, athletic performance, and even as a supportive therapy in cancer care. Throughout the conversation, he challenges conventional medical assumptions while emphasizing safe, evidence-supported approaches people can explore with proper guidance.Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of how the bicarbonate buffer works, why pH balance matters, and how simple, accessible interventions may influence long-term wellness. For this episode we're joined by Sonic Youth legend Thurston Moore to discuss his new book Now Jazz Now: 100 Essential Free Jazz and Improvisation Recordings, 1960-80. We start by recapping on the story our guest told in his acclaimed 2023 memoir Sonic Life. In the course of the conversation about his early musical life in Florida and Connecticut we hear a clip from Steve Roeser's 1994 audio interview with him. Discussion of early influences such as the Stooges takes us back to Thurston's stint in the late J.D. King's New York band the Coachmen – and then on to Sonic Youth itself. Our guest's friendship with neo-gonzoid scribe Byron Coley – a brilliant guest on our podcast last summer – takes us up to the present and the publication of Now Jazz Now. A general conversation on the subjects of "free jazz" and "improv" ensues, taking in clips from Thurston's pal David Toop's 1995 audio interview with the late Derek Bailey. After Mark has quoted from newly-added library pieces about Bill Evans (1972) and OMD (1984), Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on James Brown's 1994 loaded encounter with the Beastie Boys. Many thanks to special guest Thurston Moore. Now Jazz Now is published by Ecstatic Peace Library and available from ecstaticpeace.net/now-jazz-now. Pieces discussed: Sonic Youth, Sonic Youth And the Blast First Axis, Derek Bailey audio, Cecil Taylor: Ladies and gentlemen, please adjust your re-entry goggles, David Toop: Gorilla Noises & Mains Hum, Bill Evans: Living Time With Evans, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark: OMD and The Beastie Boys: Still Ill.
