This weeks episode focuses on Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) or H5N1, more commonly referred to as bird flu. The impact of the H5N1 has been particularly pronounced in the last two years, impacting seabird colonies on a pretty much global scale. At the outset of the episode Niall explains that while bird flu is a pre-existing virus, the virulence of the H5N1 strain is due to intensive and unsanitary farming practices in many poultry farms in south-east Asia. To provide more context around this topic, Niall Hatch interviewed Dr. Steve Newton and Brian Burke, both of BirdWatch Ireland. Steve and Brian work on some of Ireland's largest tern colonies on behalf of BirdWatch Ireland and have been at the coal face of this problem.Steve details how H5N1 has impacted Lady's Island Lake and Rockabill Island, the two colonies with the largest Roseate Tern populations in Ireland, with Rockabill being the most important Roseate Tern colony in north-western Europe. This species is one of the most endangered seabirds world-wide. Brian talks about the Dublin Port tern colony, a large principally Common Tern colony in Ireland's largest port, and the impact of the virus at this site, and the measures taken here as at the other two colonies to mitigate the spread of this disease.Brian also goes on to talk about the Kilcoole Little Tern colony, Ireland's largest colony of this seabird, which despite a slightly rocky beginning with two positive cases of avian flu, has escaped the virus this season, and went on to have a successful breeding season. Steve and Brian discuss the implications of H5N1 for the wider avian community particularly as we come into the winter season, and the need for greater government and departmental support. This weeks Bird of the Week is the Gannet, Ireland's largest breeding seabird with a wingspan of over 6 feet. It was unfortunately heavily impacted by avian flu in 2022. When diving for prey, Gannets will dive at a speed of ~60km/hour and are specially adapted for this behaviour. This species, pre avian flu, were increasing in population and are, despite the set-back from avian flu, a good news story in the world of conservation. In Your Nature features Ricky Whelan, Biodiversity Officer with Offaly County Council and Niall Hatch of BirdWatch Ireland and is edited by Ann-Marie Kelly. The series is supported by Laois, Offaly, and Westmeath County Councils and the Heritage Council.

Debt limit deal passed in the Senate now awaits Biden's signature. Another DC drama fest comes to a close. Losers in the deal are the poor, student debt holders, the IRS, and our planet. Winners include the uber-rich, Big Oil, and business-as-usual. Part of the debt limit deal ensures students will start paying their loans again at the end of the summer. And, Manchin will get his pipeline. In a separate attack on student debt holders, the U.S. Senate voted to block Biden's student loan relief package. Biden says he'll veto. The U.S. economy adds 339,000 jobs in May, way beyond economists' expectations. Avian flu and a warmer ocean were contributing factors in low breeding success for gannets in NL + BP drilling for oil in the Northeast Newfoundland Slope, a marine refuge.
Early indications are that last year's avian flu outbreak has hit the gannet population in NL hard + A Nova Scotia company is proposing to use purified mine tailings to help the ocean absorb carbon.

In the January 2023 issue of Editor & Publisher Magazine, E&P featured an article about Dr. Peter Laufer's book, “Slow News: A Manifesto for the Critical News Consumer,” and the subsequent film documentary "Slow News" that speaks to how media companies chasing "clicks" in a digital age has led to the erosion of quality journalism and the public's trust. However, what this professor of journalism and James N. Wallace Chair of Journalism at the University of Oregon was chasing was a personal dream to save the local cities newspaper — The Eugene (OR) Register-Guard. In a recent article for the local weekly entitled "How to Save the 'Guarded-Register, ' Dr. Laufer writes, "We in Eugene are witnessing the slow murder of our daily newspaper. But maybe, just maybe, what's rapidly becoming too thin to wrap fish and line the bird cage, can still be saved." He goes on to state, "When what's now the Gannett Company — the corporate monster that owns more U.S. newspapers than any other — bought the R-G, butchery began: de facto pink slips to venerable reporters and editors and photographers in the form of buyouts, and local news coverage replaced with outdated reporting from elsewhere via Gannett's USA TODAY network.” Dr. Laufer also recently published an op-ed for Inside Higher Ed entitled "A Plan to Save the Daily Paper." He told the story of how he approached Gannett to explore the idea of having his students take over the newspaper writing. Within the piece, he reports that he began the process by calling CEO Mike Reed and was connected to Amalie Nash, the Gannett senior vice president of local news and audience development, who performed a “gracious” entrée to Gannett's senior vice president for corporate development, Jay Fogarty. Laufer states that Fogarty wrote a note to him saying that “the Register-Guard is a paper we plan to own and operate long-term." However, in a subsequent phone conversation about the idea of offering the paper to the University, Laufer writes that Fogarty said, "I'm all for it when the paper stops making money. Glad we're talking. But at this point, it does make some money." In this 173rd episode of “E&P Reports,” we go one-on-one with Peter Laufer, Ph.D., an award-winning journalist, professor of journalism, James N. Wallace Chair of Journalism at the University of Oregon and author of "Slow News: A Manifesto for the Critical News Consumer." We ask Laufer about his recent campaign to get Gannett to donate the city's paper of record, The Eugene Register-Guard, to the school and his views on the media industry today.

For every journalist in America, there are six public relations professionals. That's according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Think about that for a second. Why do I bring this up? Well, it's because fewer journalists means less coverage of the important news. And why does that matter? When we don't have journalists reporting stories, we have public relations professionals creating “narratives” for the government agencies, corporations and politicians. And why is that bad? When you are getting paid to create a narrative, you aren't always telling the entire truth. And there's a difference between journalism and content. So there was a viral tweet this week by reporter Bethany Bruner, where she says “I was the ONLY reporter in the courtroom this morning as the man accused of raping a 10-year-old girl, impregnating her, leading to an abortion in Indiana, was arraigned.” She's a reporter for the Columbus Dispatch, a Gannet-owned newspaper. Why is she the only reporter in a courtroom reporting on news of this magnitude? It's because newspapers have been downsizing for two decades now and the number of reporters at local newspapers has plummeted. You see, journalism doesn't pay well. In case you haven't heard. Certainly, the reporters at the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times and other large newspapers are doing OK, although they are probably still underpaid for the amount of quality work they do. Most reporters in America are paid pennies on the dollar for what they are worth. I am your host, Melissa Oliveri. In our previous episode, Magpie read a letter from her departed father. In today's episode we read Chapter 14 – Swan Dive – where Lucas explores the land surrounding Carnifex House with Cormorant, and is shocked to find a familiar item in a small antique shop. Now, it's time to settle in… grab a blanket, and a warm drink… and let's get started.“You look like you've been riding your whole life!” says Magpie, shielding her eyes from the sun to look up at Lucas, who is sitting proudly on Cormorant's back. Lucas has built a bond with Cormorant over the past few weeks, and they've been going for long rides exploring the area around Carnifex House and the small seaside town of Pòcaid. “Where will you be going today?” asks Magpie, smiling. She recalls how she and Lucas spent the entire summer exploring the year she moved to Pocket. It seems like a lifetime ago. They are both older now, but Lucas still has that same taste for adventure.“I think I'm going to head down to the beach, then take the main road up and check out the gardens at Goldcrest Manor,” he says, looking down at Magpie and admiring the way the sun falling on her hair turns it a fiery shade of orange. “I'll be back in time for dinner!” he says over his shoulder as he and Cormorant head out. Lucas and Magpie have decided to eat a fancy home-cooked dinner on their patio, and Lucas is secretly planning to propose with the small feather ring, which is still safely tucked away in his pocket. Magpie waves goodbye and watches Lucas and Cormorant until they are out of sight before turning and heading back toward the house.Lucas and Cormorant make their way down the winding path to the beach. The sun shines through a soft brushstroke of clouds and a gentle breeze makes the tall grasses on either side of the dirt path sway like they are dancing to music no one else can hear. At last Lucas and Cormorant reach the bottom of the hill and the ocean opens up before them, caressing the sandy beach with each rolling wave. Lucas guides Cormorant toward the left, away from town, and follows the shoreline. Up ahead he sees a massive bird dive into the ocean, promptly coming up with a silvery fish in its beak, then using its massive wingspan to lift back up into the sky. A Gannet, Lucas thinks, remembering the time Manon had pointed one out to him. They had been talking about local wildlife that day, and she had been teaching him French words for some of the animals. “Chevreuil,” she would say when they'd see a deer, then she'd giggle when he tried and failed to pronounce it as well as her. One time they saw a large crow on a fence post behind Carnifex House, “Un Corbeau!” said Manon, turning to Lucas with expectation. “I can say that one!” he had laughed before shouting “Un Corbeau!”, scaring the shiny black bird back into the sky.The sound of stones landing in the water brings Lucas' attention back to the beach. Up ahead, a small boy is trying his best to skip rocks into the oncoming waves. A tall slim man dressed entirely in black keeps watch from a distance. As Lucas approaches the boy looks up at him with unusually large blue eyes. “Hullo,” he says with a perfect English accent.“Hi there!” says Lucas.“Daddy!” shouts the boy, “I think he's from America!” At this point the boy's father is only a few steps away. He smiles kindly at Lucas but remains silent. “You have a big, weird horse” says the boy, very matter of fact.“Indeed, I do!” laughs Lucas.“You shouldn't go into the forest,” says the boy, his voice taking on a very serious tone. Lucas furrows his brow, he has no intention of riding through the woods today, but why would this little boy say that to him?“Alright Ash, time to head home,” says the man, giving Lucas a sharp nod before tapping the boy on the shoulder.“Goodbye, man from America with the big, weird horse!” shouts the boy, laughing as he skips away down the shore. Lucas shakes his head, watching as the boy and his father disappear up a grassy path away from the beach.“All right Cormorant, how about we head toward town?” he asks the horse. Cormorant's ears wave back and forth, catching Lucas' words off the wind. Lucas pivots the horse, and they follow the shoreline back toward town. Lucas breathes in the cool, salty air, marveling at the beauty of the island. He comes around the bend and sees the bright colours of downtown Pòcaid up ahead. Squinting in the distance he notices a small structure tucked away behind the Skye Blue Bakery. He's never noticed the small wooden house before, having never come into town from this direction. He pulls up to the house and reads the sign above the door “Swan Dive Antiques. Let's go check it out!” he says, excited to have discovered something new. He guides Cormorant toward the back of the shop and ties him to a fence post. “I'll be right back, okay?” he says, patting the horse's neck gently. He walks around to the front of the building and lets himself in. Inside, the low-lit shop is chock-full of antiques; everything from large pieces of furniture to stacks of chairs, vintage blankets, trinkets, and jewelry. “You're looking for a gift,” says a voice from the back of the store. Lucas squints into the darkness before taking a few tentative steps further into the shop. A woman steps forward into the light, a delicate smile on her face.“Actually, I'm not really looking for anything in particular, I was just out for a horse ride and noticed your shop. I've never seen it before, you're kind of hidden from the main road,” he says. The woman's smile stretches a little more. “Those who need me know where to find me,” she says. “My name is Shelta, it's lovely to meet you…” she lets her voice trail, giving Lucas a chance to introduce himself.“Lucas,” he replies. “My… girlfriend… and I live up at Carnifex House” he says, fumbling with the world girlfriend all while bracing for the woman's reaction at the mention of Carnifex House. Unlike the other villagers, she doesn't even flinch, and instead motions for him to follow her to a display case at the back of the store, her leather lace-up boots echoing on the wood floor.“Perhaps your girlfriend would appreciate one of these,” she says, turning on the small built-in lights so he can see the contents of the glass case. An eclectic array of belongings is displayed on velvet mats, ranging from vintage costume jewelry to silver spoons, old engagement rings, antique writing quills with ink wells, and a variety of stones and crystals which, according to the small handwritten sign next to them, have various healing and magical properties. A small figurine shaped like a bird whittled out of wood catches his eye, and he's about to ask the shopkeeper to look at it when a sound above his head makes him look up. Hanging from the rafters in the ceiling are several windchimes and bells, and one in particular causes Lucas to gasp. He would recognize it anywhere, even in a low-lit hidden antique shop an ocean away from Meadow Lane… There, hanging from the end of a long cobalt blue velvet ribbon, is The Skyark Bell.“What on earth?!” he whispers to himself. “Ah, yes, this item is very old indeed, some say it dates back to the time of the druids!” says the shopkeeper, her smile never leaving her face. Lucas is too shocked to respond. “Perhaps this would make a nice addition to your home, it has a beautiful sound,” she adds. Lucas nods, as if in a dream state. The woman unties the end of the ribbon, setting the bell free. She gently wraps it with some pale blue tissue paper before stretching her arm across the counter to hand it to Lucas. “Consider this a welcome gift,” she says in a tone that leaves no room for discussion, her eyes fixated on Lucas' face like she can see right through him.“Thank you,” he stutters, still stunned, before placing the bell in his coat pocket.“I'm afraid it's time for me to close now,” she says, her smile never faltering. Lucas nods and heads back out the door. He has barely come down the front steps when he hears the loud click of the deadbolt in the door as the remaining lights in the shop go dark. Lucas looks up at the darkening sky. What time is it? He wonders, he didn't think he'd been in the store all that long. He scurries to the back and is relieved to see Cormorant standing patiently next to the fencepost. “Time to head home, old friend” he says, lifting himself gently into the saddle.Lucas and Cormorant walk briskly toward the main road that climbs the cliff above the town, Lucas making note of how rapidly daylight is fading from the sky above.Thank you so much for listening. Join me next week for Wingspan chapter 15, Gateway, where Lucas and Cormorant take a turn that will change the course of their lives, and Magpie's, forever. Before I go, I'd like to thank Phaeton Starling Publishing for this fantastically eerie story, as well as Cannelle for composing eerie, mood-setting music for this podcast. Orcadian Energy was established in early 2014 by petroleum engineers and geologists. The company has four licences, three of which lie 150km due East of Aberdeen and just West of the Gannet field and the Anasuria and Triton FPSOs, in an area known as the Western Platform. These licences are rich in resources and highly prospective, sixteen of seventeen wells (and sidetracks) drilled on our blocks have encountered oil. Take a look through the history page to see when (and with which rig) all those wells were drilled.Orcadian has focussed on viscous oil development opportunities in the Central North Sea. We know the UKCS well and the OGA is a consistent and reliable regulator. Water depths in our core acreage are relatively shallow at c. 80-90 metres and the reservoirs are also not very deep at only c. 800 metres, so wells can be drilled on wellhead platforms, with dry trees, from a typical North Sea jack-up rig. These conditions combine to minimise well cost thus enabling tight development well spacings, which are the key to a successful and profitable polymer flood approach.

Aline Da Silva Cerqueira is a PhD candidate, in the Department of Geography of King's College, London jointly with the ZSL Institute of Zoology. The full title of the research project is; "Acoustic Tracking of Ocean Wanderers: Revealing Behavioural Context on the Wing", but from now on, we are going to just say Seabird Soundscapes! Her research investigates seabird soundscapes in the context of foraging at sea, using a combination of miniature bird-borne audio recorders and GPS tracking devices. She is the creator of Seabird Soundscapes, a citizen-science-powered project that engages people with the marine soundscapes of seabirds at different locations around the world, helping to unveil their foraging behaviour in the high seas and identifying potential threats to their existence and Aline tells Grant all about the project today. Aline's research interests lie mainly with marine ecology and conservation using biologging technology and non-invasive monitoring methods, and marine policy. She is engaged in activities that support fairer, collaborative and inclusive practices and equal representation in conservation. Aline is the co-founder of AQUASIS, a conservation NGO dedicated to the protection of endangered species and important habitats in northeastern Brazil, and a research partner with AQUASIS' Marine Mammals Program, focused on the conservation of the manatee (Trichechus manatus), and the Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis), two endangered species that have the highest mortality rate in the region. Aline is part of Liga das Mulheres pelo Oceano (Women's League for the Ocean), a network of women from a range of backgrounds working collectively to boost the impact of actions and ideas for ocean conservation. She is also a collaborator in the Decade of Ocean Scientists Network. Since we recorded our discussion, Aline has sent me this update; "There have been over 19,000 classifications on Zooniverse so far! Soon I will upload more Gannet sounds (from new individuals) to the project site and am starting to prepare my albatross data to upload to the site too! All these should be done by the end of the next month, which is very exciting! Seabird Sounds will be online until 2023, at least." Please check out the Seabird Soundscapes project, and get involved! This week’s entrepreneur is a Technical Producer, Creative Producer, and Filmmaker. He is the Founder of SFG Productions, and they focus on live events, broadcasts, virtual conferences, and so much more. Let’s dive into Sean’s entrepreneurial story! Sean was forced to become an entrepreneur. This was definitely not on his radar when he was a kid. Sean was slowly freelancing here and there, and eventually, his clients said that they needed him to be a company. As a freelancer, he had a hard time saying no, and the number of clients coming through his door made him realize he had to hire and scale or else he’d be losing some great opportunities. Sean’s lucky break happened when he got a production gig for TED Talks. At the time, it was not nearly as big as it was before, but he took on the challenge and it led to fantastic press for his company. The video production on the TED Talk stages was much better quality than any “standard” conference at the time. When Sean joined EO, it was like a curtain being pulled back and he saw how much knowledge he was missing out on to successfully grow his business. It took him roughly two years to be in the program before he hit his first million in sales, and it’s just been a blessing of a resource. Thanks to Lorenzo for suggesting the northern gannet this week! We'll also learn about an extinct ancestor of the gannet, called plotopterids! Don't forget to enter our book giveaway! Details here. The northern gannet is the assassin of the bird world, probably: DIVING! It's what they do: Northern gannets hanging out on their nesting grounds: An artist's rendition of a plotopterid, with the silhouette of a modern emperor penguin for comparison. Picture from March of the Fossil Penguins. Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. This week let’s learn about two interesting birds! Thanks to Lorenzo for the suggestion! But first, an announcement! I’m doing a giveaway of my books Skytown and Skyway! The giveaway runs through October 31, 2020 and is open to anyone in the world. To enter, just let me know you’d like to enter. You can email me at strangeanimalspodcast@gmail.com, leave me a message on Twitter or Facebook, or anything else. All I ask is that you make it clear that you want to enter and let me know how to contact you if you win. On Halloween night at midnight I’ll choose one name at random from everyone who enters and that person will win one paperback copy of each book, and I’ll also throw in some stickers, bookmarks, a pencil that says “I bite mean people,” and probably some other stuff. I’ll also sign the books if you like. If you want to take a look at the books to see if they sound interesting, I made a new page on the strangenanimalspodcast.blubrry.net website with links. Please enter. It will be embarrassing if no one does. Anyway, Lorenzo wants to hear about the northern gannet, a sea bird that sort of looks like a gull who mastered the blade and is probably an assassin. Its bill is large, silvery-blue, and dagger-like, outlined with black at the base that makes a dramatic mask. This mask is actually bare of feathers, showing the bird’s black skin. Otherwise it’s mostly white, with a wash of pale golden on the head and neck, black-tipped wings, and gray legs with webbed toes. But it’s also really big, almost the size of a pelican. Its wingspan can be over six feet, or 184 cm. It can weigh almost 8 lbs, or 3.6 kg, too. Like many sea birds, the northern gannet breeds in colonies that can number in the thousands, and it only breeds on oceanside cliffs, mostly on islands off the coast of eastern Canada, Iceland, and western Europe. It’s especially common around the British Isles. So many birds may be nesting at once that the cliffs appear white from a distance, like snow fell on the clifftops, but instead of snowflakes, it’s gannets! While the northern gannet will sit on the water after diving, the only time it actually sets foot on land is when it breeds. It doesn’t walk very well, which is why it nests on cliffs. It’s easier for it to get airborne from a cliff. It can only take off from the water by facing into the wind and flapping hard, but if it’s not windy enough it can’t get airborne and it just has to float there until the wind picks up, probably feeling pretty foolish. But it swims well so if it is stuck on the water, it can swim along with its head under water, looking for fish it can grab. But most of the time the northern gannet is in the air, and it is built for speed and efficiency. Its long, narrow wings allow it to reach high speeds, up to 40 mph, or 65 km/h. It’s not very maneuverable, though, except for one specific move. The northern gannet is a diver. It’s a diver extraordinaire! It can reach incredible speeds while diving, up to 62 mph, or 100 km/h. When it dives, it holds its body rigid and angles its wings back, then folds the wings tight against its body just before it hits the water. It can dive up to 36 feet deep, or 11 m, and then it will swim farther down, sometimes over 80 feet deep, or 25 m. Its eyes are sharp and adapted to seeing both underwater and above water,

This book is about how’d you actually nurture creativity, how’d you actually get better in it. Creativity is the result of hard thoughtful work. To create something that recognizes creativity, you have to create something that’s the right idea at the right time. It’s not about creating a good idea, but creating the right idea. Allen extracts 2 points about what drives people to like certain things and dislike other things. Our brain is constantly assessing the thing for the level of familiarity. because we’re fearful of unfamiliar. Familiarity issues a very important tool of the creative process. you have to create ideas that are familiar enough to feel safe. Another urge also wired to seek out things that are novel. We also creating something new e.g. new restaurants or from a more evolutionary perspective, you’re creating new sources of food, water, pleasure. As humans we have the urge to the familiar, but also the urge to the novel. They seemingly have no sense until you realize that our brain is a really elegant way of balancing between risk and reward. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

What we want to do is reinvigorate that.” Menlo Park: Proposal for city drone program raises civil liberty questions In California at a Menlo Park City Council study session, police, public works, and community development leaders described how drones could help them. The council was open to the idea of using drones, but they did have significant concerns about privacy and civil rights. Mayor Ray Mueller said, "For me, the use cases are great. I just want to have discussion about what the guard rails are." City staff was asked to come back with a drone program expert and clearer policies on acceptable uses of the drones and relevant software applications, as well as more information about how many human-hours of work that drone use could save. FAA to Improve Airmen Certificate Testing The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Jan. 13, 2020, will launch improvements to the way it tests all applicants for an FAA airman certificate. This applies to all certified pilots of manned and unmanned aircraft. One of the most important changes is the requirement that applicants obtain an FAA Tracking Number (FTN) by creating an Integrated Airman Cer...

Gannet and GateHouse announced a merger this week. On this episode of Intersection, we dive into the fine print of the merger and what it means for the news business with Rick Brunson, associate instructor of journalism at UCF; Sara Fischer, media reporter for Axios, and Rick Edmonds, media business analyst with Poynter. Josh Gannet is a man of many talents. He is a producer, engineer, manager, just to name a few. Josh is Redman’s engineer and the engineer of “Wu-Tang the Saga Continues.” Therefore, I had a chance to chop it up with him about the project’s background and Josh’s part in the general warmth and tightness the album embodies. I speak with Josh about his background being in a rock band to his humble beginnings in the music production engineering business. And Redman’s work ethic and production background. We then shift to a wide-ranging discussion about Josh’s approach to production/mixing and what it took to complete this project being on the road and working remotely. Finally, we wrap up with a discussion on the album’s reception and how “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin”’s influence on the latter. Enjoy! And have a happy Thanksgiving! Gannets are using fishing boats as fast-food outlets, chasing them for miles over the ocean. Thomas Bodey explains to Chris Smith how GPS tracking on both the birds and ships shows that the gannets can tell trawlers from yachts.
