From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above.Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Alight-a-WhirlIt's Art-a-Whirl weekend! The Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA) puts on the annual celebration of all things local art, with three days of open studios, live events, music and food vendors. Hours are Friday 5-8 p.m., Saturday 12–8 p.m. and Sunday 12–5 p.m.It's a favorite event for Molly Reopelle, a muralist who works under the name “Made by Molly Jo.” One space she's particularly looking forward to seeing is Alight-a-Whirl, an annual art sale fundraiser for Alight. The nonprofit supports displaced people and refugees in the U.S. and across the world.Alight-a-Whirl features a 500-piece art sale with work by local, international and refugee artists, as well as pop-up events, including a Friday happy hour and portrait painting. All profits from the art sale support Alight.Molly says: One of the people I'll be looking at [at Alight-a-Whirl] is Lora Hlavsa. She might be recognizable because she developed the artwork with NEMAA for the Art-a-Whirl branding this year, and she's got a really cool new series called The People's Pantry, which is using really familiar objects like foods and pantry staples to explore some of her lived experience and then reflect on migration and cultural access.— Molly ReopelleGender Joy Art ShowJenn Watters in Duluth recommends seeing the annual Gender Joy Art Show, whose creative works are expressions of joy made by female and gender expansive people of all ages. The exhibit is put on this year by the YWCA of Duluth and the Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault (PAVSA), and the show will include work created by PAVSA's weekly art group. New this year is an interactive art exhibit entitled “The Elephant in the Room,” hosted by Rachel Gilbertson of Art of Presence. Visitors to the exhibit are encouraged to write words or phrases they've received that were harmful to their gender identity, which Gilbertson will transform into a brightly colored work with an elephant's face emerging from the chaos. The exhibition runs until June 27 in the Atrium of Zeitgeist in Duluth.Watters who particularly enjoys seeing the work created by children.Jenn says: This is one of my favorite art shows each year.— Jenn WattersOne Subject PressDeborah Keenan, a Twin Cities poet and former longtime teacher at Hamline's MFA program, is trumpeting the work of former student Zach Czaia, who runs One Subject Press. A year ago, Czaia bought a Chicago-based press and moved it to Minneapolis, through which he publishes a wide range of work from poetry to fiction to theology. On Friday, May 15, the press will celebrate its one-year anniversary with an evening of literary readings and food. Czaia will read, along with poets Greg Watson and Suzanne Swanson, and attendees are invited to bring a poem to share. The event runs from 6-8 p.m. at Inkwell Booksellers in northeast Minneapolis. It is open to the public, though registration is requested through the press.Deborah says: It's called One Subject Press after a Richard Rodriguez quote: “There is only one subject: what it feels like to be alive. Nothing is irrelevant. Nothing is typical.” That's the flag Zach carries into battle, and it's a great flag.I think lots of people who love poetry and essays should absolutely show up [to this event.]— Deborah Keenan

In this intergalactic episode, Graham and Jonas bring back an AGHP favorite: Skinner!Captain Skinner takes us to space with Art Show! If you've ever wondered what Bob Ross would be like if he took acid, this twisted watercolor Hellworld is your answer. Skinner brings us along for the ride, talks about the grand vision of Art Show and let's us know if we may just see a live version.Welcome Back, Skinner!
Today we are joined with visual artist Captain Skinner and director Allen Cordell to get a behind the scenes look into their absolutely unhinged and hilarious series titled Art Show with Captain Skinner. The best way I can describe it is it's kind of like Bob Ross, but if Bob Ross was in outer space and forced to do the show for an audience of kids who don't like him. This series fells like a fever dream acid trip and you can check out all this fun right now over on Etch Film's YouTube channel!

Three artists. One exhibition. A decade of friendship that turned into fuel for making braver work. Ty sits down with Vy Ngo and Eric Breish to explore how creative community shapes everything—from the courage to apply, to the way we process rejection, to the rituals that help us recover after the lights go down.We start with origin stories and the rush of seeing our pieces hang together at Art Center Waco's Amplified show. Then we dig into the practical spine of a thriving art practice: how to pick the right opportunities, why research beats volume, and how strong documentation (clear, well-lit photos and short videos) becomes your first studio visit. We talk about building a cohesive submission that tells a story instead of tossing in disconnected “greatest hits,” and we unpack the difference between galleries that simply move product and those that invest in your evolution. The conversation gets honest around critique and growth. Safe feedback from trusted artist friends can be uncomfortable and necessary—pushing you to clarify intent, separate your voice from influence, and keep evolving. When no arrives, confidence returns to the work itself. One pivotal story turns a painful rejection into a better fit with a smaller gallery that encouraged risk and led to the most personal show of a career. The lesson: alignment and patience create momentum. We also name the quiet crash after big openings—what we call post‑artum depression—and offer tools to navigate it: nature days, spiritual or wellness practices, journaling, and time with people who truly understand. Finally, we celebrate DIY paths and authentic networking. Show up for spaces you love without treating every hello like an angle. Be interested before trying to be interesting; your people will find you.If this resonates, follow, share with an artist who needs it, and leave a review so more creatives can find the show. Your support helps us keep bringing real conversations—and practical tools—to the studio.Vy Ngo: @vjngo_artEric Breish: @eric_breish_artSend us a message - we would love to hear from you! In this episode of Slowmade, I'm joined by Janine DeCresenzo, a studio jeweler who has spent more than twenty years supporting herself through her craft — largely on the art show circuit.Janine shares what it's really been like to build a life around travel, art festivals, and face-to-face connection with customers, and what that path has taught her about community, stamina, safety, and the long game of being a working artist. We talk honestly about the physical and emotional toll of show life, how priorities shift over time, and what it looks like to step back without walking away from the work you've built. Our conversation also explores Janine's recent business shifts — leaning more into custom work, home trunk shows, and creating a model that feels more balanced and sustainable in this season of her life. We spend time talking about learning as an artist, staying curious, and even how Janine is thoughtfully exploring AI as a tool to support the business side of her work, freeing up more time for the studio. This is a grounded, generous conversation about evolving without erasing your past, listening to what your life is asking for now, and trusting that a creative career doesn't have to stay fixed to remain meaningful. In this episode, we talk about:Building a full-time jewelry career through art shows and travelWhat 20+ years on the art show circuit really looks likeSafety, stamina, and self-care on the roadChoosing a slower, more balanced business modelCustom work and building deeper client relationshipsStaying curious and continuing to learn as an artistUsing AI as a supportive business tool (not a creative replacement)Playing the long game as a working artistConnect with Janine:Website: janinedecresenzojewelry.comInstagram: @decresenzojwlryLove the Podcast?Support an episode: Click here to learn more!Without your support I couldn't continue the Slowmade Podcast. She recalls recognizing her calling as an artist as early as age four or five, and later feeling that oil paint was her true medium after experimenting with watercolor and acrylics in college. She also tells us about how throughout her life she held a series of unconventional jobs, but always returned to nostalgic rural landscapes, eventually realizing she could not keep a “normal” job and had to make art her livelihood. Romona explains that her paintings are driven by intuition, memory, and emotion rather than strict realism: she chases a very specific feeling in the light and design of a scene, mixing plein air sketches, photos, and childhood memories of Oklahoma's skies and trees. She also talks about the tension between nostalgia and change, seeing herself partly as a visual historian preserving vanishing farmsteads, gardens, and rural spaces, and notes how her work has evolved toward more layering and a desire for greater simplification and abstraction. Romona offers advice to aspiring artists; she stresses building a large, solid body of work, considering financial stability, and accepting that painting is an ongoing, often difficult process where doubt never fully disappears, but commitment to one's vision is essential. Finally, Romona tells us about her upcoming shows!Romona's FASO site:romonayoungquist.comRomona's Instagram:instagram.com/rlyoungquist/

Before the idea of feminism took shape, there was what writers once called “the woman question.” The phrase comes from the querelle des femmes—a centuries-long debate in Europe about women's rights, intellect, and place in society. One of the first to take it up was Christine de Pizan, the Italian-French court writer who, in 1405, published The Book of the City of Ladies. At a time when most women were excluded from education and public life, de Pizan challenged misogyny head-on, laying some of the earliest groundwork for what we now understand as feminist thought. That question—what is a woman's place in culture and history?—has echoed ever since. In 1971, the art historian Linda Nochlin famously reframed it by asking: “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” We have a clear answer: there had been great women artists all along, but their stories were often overlooked, dismissed, or erased. A new exhibition at the recently opened Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw hones in on that conversation. "The Woman Question: 1550–2025," curated by Alison M. Gingeras, gathers nearly five hundred years of women's creative production—from Renaissance pioneers like Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana, to Baroque heroines such as Elisabetta Sirani and Artemisia Gentileschi, and contemporary artists including Betty Tompkins and Lisa Brice. With more than 200 artworks, the exhibition focuses on how women saw and depicted themselves and the world, and how the represented power, resistance, desire, and violence. Through portraits, allegories, and bold depictions of female experience, these artists reveal how women have long claimed creative agency despite the structures built to contain them. On this episode of The Art Angle, Gingeras joins senior editor Kate Brown from Warsaw, Poland, to talk about early women art stars, recent rediscoveries, and why, after all this time, we still need all-women exhibitions.

Today's podcast is a little different because it's a panel that was done at the Coors Western Art Show Collectors Roundup in September 2025. They have a show that's in January 2026 and this is kind of a preview get together with collectors, artists, and other key figures in the Western art world. This particular event was a panel that was part of the programming for this preview event. The panel featured Kevin Doyle, the Director of the Jackson Hole Art Auction, Josh Warren, who's the Associate Publisher of Western Art & Architecture Magazine and myself. Joshua Rose was the moderator and asked us questions about Western Art and what to expect in the future of the genre. I think it's a fun and interesting discussion and there were some things that came out and you go "yeah, I agree with that," and other stuff where you're saying "maybe I don't agree with that." Regardless, it was a fun and unique conversation and I thought you might enjoy it as an episode of the podcast.
Have you ever wondered how some fine artists make real money selling originals at art shows while others struggle to get traction? In this week's episode of the Artist Academy Podcast, I'm chatting with Mark McKenna, a Western and wildlife artist who went from teaching high school art to earning up to $50K at a single show. Mark breaks down exactly how he did it—without fancy connections or a massive following. He shares the pivotal lessons he learned from his mentor, Greg Beecham, about pricing your art higher (and why collectors actually prefer it that way), connecting with buyers authentically, and how being likable and generous can open more doors than any marketing tactic. We also talk about his leap from teaching to full-time art, how he balances family life while painting 30 hours a week, and why art shows are still one of the best ways to build genuine relationships with collectors today. If you've ever thought, “Could I really make a living selling my paintings?” — Mark's story is proof that you absolutely can, with the right mix of strategy, confidence, and heart.
