Hundreds of children were caught up in riots with well over 100 arrested and a number charged last summer after the murder of three children in Southport. Since then far right extremism and racism in schools has intensified - an everyday experience in primary and secondary schools, according to the teachers union, the NASUWT. The top priority at their annual conference next week is a motion on behaviour and school safety with the agenda citing problems caused by the Southport riots. Patrick Roach, General Secretary of the NASUWT joins Nuala McGovern.Frances Mayli McCann stars as Daisy Buchanan in a new musical of The Great Gatsby. The show comes to London following a hit run on Broadway. We speak to Frances and the show's writer Kait Kerrigan about placing women at the centre of this classic story, celebrating its centenary year.Julie Bindel's new book, Lesbians: Where are we now? is described as part-memoir, part frontline reportage and part cultural commentary. In it she examines what defines lesbian culture, love, friendship and happiness today and asks why - in her view - lesbians so often seem to face particular hostility? The journalist, feminist campaigner and author is in the Woman's Hour studio.Today marks 11 years since over 270 girls were abducted from their school in the town of Chibok, Nigeria by Boko Haram. The tragedy sparked international outrage - you might remember the campaign hashtag #bringbackourgirls - and today, global leaders and advocates including UN representatives are gathering in London to mark the anniversary with a photo exhibition and panel discussions. We hear from Dr Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode - lawyer and activist from the Murtala Muhammed Foundation. The Herring Girls were the predominantly Scottish, working-class women who laboured in the UK's once thriving fishing industry. An itinerant workforce, they went from port to port, following the fishing fleet and working gruelling hours, gutting and packing fish for export in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Artist and farm labourer Joanne Coates has spent six months researching the life and work of this community on the east coast of Scotland. Using art, photography and performance she wants to reclaim their history and reconnect local people with their Herring Girl heritage.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey

Inspired by Lee's original "Dirt Pile" story, we decided to ask the crew about their toughest personal moments since leaving Southwestern. This will be a Part 1. Enjoy the stories from Pat, Andres, and Alecia. Lee's original story - https://youtu.be/sTQNQ7x5gIU?si=S4HjfdWmEjpoo6Zy About our panel: Alecia Huck is the founder of MAVERICK & Company, a management consultant, sought-after speaker, and author. She specializes in helping leadership teams of fast-growing companies build the critical skills, tools, systems and processes they need. She is known for working closely with leaders to customize solutions, protect existing culture, and fix what is broken without “going corporate.” Experienced in industries from construction to criminal justice, Alecia is proud to work with entrepreneurs so they can spend less time fighting fires and more time building what matters. Though he studied astronomy & meteorology as an undergrad, Lee received a Master's degree in English from the University of Kansas. While he was there, Lee was a mild-mannered lecturer in the English department by day, and a member of a touring glam rock band by night. Complete with pyrotechnics and makeup. His band just finished their Final Reunion after playing 45 years together—see Facebook. As an undergrad, he traveled a thousand miles away from home and ran his own business selling books with Southwestern Advantage—which is a direct sales program. Lee was a top salesperson that summer, and over the next seven years, was a top experienced salesperson, recruiter, and manager every year. Southwestern promoted Lee to Director of Marketing & Sales Development, in charge of Southwestern's training, and finally became the Director of Leadership Development worldwide. He helped train more than 100,000 college students there over the course of 36 years. In addition, Lee has taught at Vanderbilt's Owen School of Management and is currently a professor at two universities in Nashville, teaching business, literature, & communication courses. He also is a certified John Maxwell trainer and life coach. In his non-work life, Lee trains and competes with the U.S. Masters swim team. He is a deacon at his church, is a certified storm spotter, and also a face reader…. His wife is a physician at Vanderbilt, and they have three grown children who enjoy rock music and correcting people's grammar. Patrick Roach started Southwestern Real Estate in 2007 at the request of the CEO of Southwestern/Great American Inc., Henry Bedford. When I started SWRE, I was brand new to the industry. I decided to learn the business by interviewing other Managing Brokers in my market to learn what it takes to be successful as a Realtor. Office to office, I found myself hearing some of the same principles, but as I looked around those offices I saw A LOT of unsuccessful Realtors hanging around the office. I knew then that if I was going to succeed, I would need to insulate myself from that type of mediocrity. I created a set of principles that would chart my course so that I would become excellent at the work of a Realtor, keep my clients' interests first and foremost, and earn my future business by the referrals of happy clients. Today I am one of the top producing agents in the Chicagoland market and I've surrounded myself with others that are focused on becoming truly great at this career – I find that inspiring. Patrick has a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College in History/Social Science. He paid his way through college by selling educational products door-to-door in the Southwestern Company's summer internship, which led to a 10-year career as a District Sales Manager helping to lead that program. He lives in Glen Ellyn with his wife Jenny and their three children. He is an avid music enthusiast and is happy to pass along his newest find. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pony-tales/support

Nearly one in five teachers working in England has been hit by a pupil, according to a new BBC commissioned survey of 9,000 teachers. The survey, gathered between February and March this year, also found that 15% of secondary school teachers say they have experienced sexual harassment from a pupil when working at a school. The teacher workforce is predominantly female, 76% of teachers are women. Nuala McGovern is joined by Dr Patrick Roach, General Secretary of teacher's union NASUWT. It's 60 years since the first Biba shop opened and the Fashion and Textile Museum in London have just opened a new exhibition: The Biba Story - 1964-1975. On until the 8 September, it explores how the fashion phenomenon blossomed to become the world's first lifestyle label. Nuala speaks to its founder - Barbara Hulanicki - and the curator of the exhibition - Martin Pel. Australian politician Georgie Purcell is the youngest woman in the parliament of the state of Victoria. She's also a former stripper who holds degrees in law, and communications and politics. From posting TikToks about animal rights, politics, and beer, to archiving her life achievements with tattoos and sharing photos of herself pole dancing – she is definitely not your average politician. She's also been a target of almost constant sexist attacks and abuse, which on occasions made her fear for her life. Georgie talks to Nuala about why she's still determined to get more women into politics. In the fourth part of our series, Breaking The Cycle, a boy who was groomed and trafficked by a gang tells his story. He was kicking a football with a mate when a man in a flash car pulled up and befriended them. Soon that 14-year-old was going missing from home and selling drugs from a 'trap' house in a seaside town far away. He describes how isolated and frightened he felt and the sheer relief when it was all over. His 'guide' from a new practice called SHiFT has helped him to understand what happened and how to stay out of trouble. Our reporter Jo Morris met them. Today marks 30 years since the beginning of BBC Radio 5 Live. Once having a reputation for being ‘bloke radio', many well loved and respected female broadcasters including Naga Munchetty and Rachel Burden have taken over the airways. Nuala hears from presenter and broadcaster Eleanor Oldroyd, who has been at the station from the very beginning, to discuss what has changed for female broadcasters and women's sport. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Claire Fox
